Hi Kristen!
You guys are in for a REAL treat! I remember my first Disney cruise..:yay: :worship:  LOL
Yes, we are from NY. Saratoga Springs area, just north of Albany.

09-28-2009, 05:13 PM
Saratoga Springs is VERY NICE!!!!!!!
It is our first Disney Cruise and for some of us, our first ever cruise. Stand by for sea-sickness wrist-band applications!
We are the largest group (so far) here....I'll break down by staterooms:
ME: Poppy to some but Bill to all others
DW: Wendy....it's like being married to Mary Poppins. She's practically perfect in every way
DD: Adult Melanie (37)...Mommy to DGD
DGD: Julianna to most but she's my little ZuZu (6 at time of cruise)
DS: Jason..33 when we cruise..boyfriend (so far) to DSGF
DSGF: Alison...36
DSGFDD: Amanda...17
DSDGFDS: Jason (also, just to be confusing)..14
we are all on deck 5 ...they are across from each other and we're at the other end of the ship
By the way, Suffolk County is a nice little spot on the map, too:thumbsup2

We are on deck 7 in a cat 9A. Didn't dare do a verandah with DS coming along. He's a bit "active" shall I say, and I don't want to have to worry about him hanging over the railing all week long:rotfl:

does anybody else think its annoying that you have to sign in again when you get to the meets section? or am I just getting old and crabby?;)
We have a nephew named brendon...he is almost five right now and he is quite a handful..always was rough and tumble, all boy, bumps and bruises kind of kid....
Our group is in a large porthole window, DS in a navigator verandah, and the other room in inside......
has anyone here done the FE thing? I'm not too interested in getting adult stuff but I think it must be fun for the kids.....In that case, do you just make a pocket for each of the kids (in MY case, just 1) or make multiple pockets anyhow with everyone from the cabin's name anyhow?

Bill - maybe it's the name that makes them so "active"!:rotfl:
I would like to do the FE thing too. More so for my kids than DH and I. I would make a FE with pockets just for the people you want to receive goodies. I have seen pictures of other FE's and some of them had names on the pockets so you knew who you were giving items to. Some people get really creative and crafty with their gifts... I don't know what I'm going to do... I'm not very crafty lol:goodvibes

We have only cruised once before in Feb 2005 on Disney and are looking forward to returning.

Right now we are booked for a cat. 11, deck 7 aft. Our first cruise we had a balcony, but when I saw the rates compared to what we paid a few years ago I was a little shocked at the increase
We did not spend a lot of time in our room, so I think cat. 11 will work out. And hey, if we get an upgrade- that sounds good to us! :thumbsup2
I read about the new expansions at Castaway Cay over the weekend. WOW! I am glad they will be completed when we arrive in a year and a half.

so far....
we are a small group of NY DISers. I wonder (Or, more correctly, I Magic how many more will join us......
the Mt Rushmore idea is, as we used to say looooong ago, groovy!
is there someone among us who actually knows how to do all those great graphics things?
anyone going to a DCL House Party? There is one in the next town over from me but I don't believe any of the people (some of who I know in passing) on the guest list are DISers....
Any initial ideas regarding FEs?
Hope all u Presidents of the Caribbean sailors are well!

Hi all!
Just booked in 5c. First time cruise for our family me (Dana-39), DH (42), DD (10 at time of sailing).
We're from Massachusetts and hate to bust up the NY thing that is going on, but we are very excited for the trip! Any tips anyone has is greatly appreciated!
wcw57
11-03-2009, 08:16 AM
Massachusetts, huh? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
I guess we'll let you on our NY cruise!
Seriously, welcome aboard!!!!
I/We have never cruised before but some of my group has...never on DCL, though.
It is my opinion that you should be well-read with the details which interest you (excursions, boarding, kids clubs, etc) and kind ofjust experience the rest of the journey.....
unless you're one of those make a detailed list (do this, then this, then THIS) kind of person. Have you been to WDW? I go in with a battle plan then just let it slip away.....the kid in me takes me away from the plan and lets me enjoy the spontanaiety.. which is spelled incorrectly.
anyhow, we all have a LOOOOOOOOONG time to cram info and plan ahead.
I hope we will see you on board!
by the way...we are THE PRESIDENTS OF THE CARIBBEAN
great name, no?

welcome gardengirl!! While I am a NY'er now, my DH & I grew up in NH and are big Boston sports fans (sshhh... don't tell the others on this thread or they may disown me!! :rotfl2:). It is difficult living here in the Evil Empire w/ the Yankees doing so well in the World Series right now..patiently waiting for next year!:thumbsup2
Anyhoo..welcome aboard & we are glad to have ya! I haven't been thinking about this cruise too much lately b/c we are leaving for WDW in 30 days and I'm focused on that trip right now...:), but I'm looking forward to all that planning a cruise entails!

Hey Nick!!
How was your trip?? Looks like you had beautiful weather!! Can't wait to hear about it:) Happy belated birthday, the cake looks yummy! I can't wait for our trip on the Magic...I want to go now!!
Gardengirl...FE stands for Fish Extenders. If you look on the DCL forum you will find lots of threads about these. Basically if you decide to do this (we may all decide to do this as a cruise group as time goes on), you make a homemade pocket holder for your family. It hangs on the fish that is in the hallway outside your stateroom door. Then people will place little gifts in each pocket during your cruise. These are usually small little trinket type things, although some people are really crafty and creative and make picture frames, magnets etc... just do a search and you will see some pretty amazing things! You would decide what to make/buy and during your cruise you would go to all of the people who also signed up for FE's and place your gifts in their pockets. It's almost like a secret santa:) Hope I explained that well enough.

Wow, you guys get to Disney MUCH more than us....I'm soooooo looking forward to the cruise.
I wonder if the rest of our cruise will be filled up with Dream overflow...
Does anyone have a feel for how full the ship is already? It IS a premium-priced cruise due to demand.
Anyone ever been in WDW for NY Eve? We did it 5 years ago....what fun!
By the way......the Yankees won. maybe they'll buy another ring next year, too.

Bad news folks. Just had visit with orthodontist and was given price for DS's braces. :scared1: After discussion with DW, we either needed to cancel August Dream all together or cut the February trip in half. We decided to cut the Feb trip and will be going on the 4 day Dream instead of The Magic.
Hope you all have a Magical cruise! :thumbsup2

GOOD NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our cruise is back on!
BUT
there are some changes...right now we are reduced to a party of 5 (me, DW, DD, DS, DGD....) all the non-family members (girlfriend and her children) are GONE! There MAY be more people to add before Feb 2011 so we are holding all the rooms for now, but who knows? I mean, besides The Shadow..........
anyhow, our little group is shifting and changing.....we are shedding people like trees are dropping leaves.
Hope all of you are well.....

Hey Gang!
Any of you New Yawkers ever use Air Tran....I never have but have read very mixed reviews.......
Is everyone arriving 1 day early? We plan on it. That way, if there is BAD weather, we have a bit of a cushion to re-book, leaqve early, drive to another (warmer) airport, or just plain drive!
Where will everyone be staying? The free shuttles sound like a good idea to me....lots of opinions on the DIS boards about where 2 stay.
Anyone using Dis Shuttle to cruise? We plan on town car from airport to hotel.
Airfares should be posted in another 5 or six months, I think....
how many of us, besides me, are cruise newbies?
the 2010 Pres week cruise is sold out.....I imagine we will be, too.
hope all are well.

EVERYONE seems interested in amenities upon arriving at Port Canaveral. I/We plan on being tired and would like to eat and sleep. We are leaving after school on Fri (or, at least, that's the plan) so it will be later in the day by the time we get there. I would like a burger and a bed. Don't care about the view and the pool. I booked a CRUISE! THAT should have a nice enough view, Ah figger.:)
But that puts me in the minority.....

Its my way of keeping her interest peaked and venting some of my enthusiasm....
You don't want to spend too much enthusiasm too early so you're worn out or bored with too much information by actual crusie time, I think.
Westchester is nice. Been there a few times. My DGD wil be six and 3 months when we cruise......maybe Denisees' DD and my DGD will chill together...:thumbsup2

We are in the Hamlet of Brookhaven which nobody has ever heard of....we are next to (east) Bellport which NY Times readers know....near Patchogue.
South Shore of Long Island....almost dead center between Manhattan and Montauk
THAT is why, on a much earlier post, I was wondering if people were in love with Castaway Cay because they don't get to see beaches ever/often or if it is really THAT special. I've seen Caribbean beaches and was duly impressed with the water but sand and waves don't impress me so much.:confused3
Still, I'm looking forward to goin"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course I know where that is!-- I grew up in Selden and have family/friends in Mt. Sinai, Holtsville, Baldwin....too many to name! I hear what you are saying about the ocean-- never realized how much I missed the beaches on LI till I moved up here---yes there are beaches here but not like LI- in fact everyone in Westchester seems to drive to LI for the beaches!
- BTW Kris i am in New Rochelle- so not too far from you and my mom (former LI-der) just moved to Tarrytown....
Hopefully we can cont to chat and the next year will fly by!!-- i love all the tips and tricks i keep reading!!
Quick ?- since i am new here-- how do i get those cute timelines on the bottom of my posts? i went to that magik kingdom site and set it up- but how do i get it on the actual post?
thanks guys! :lovestruc

Ever notice how people ask the same questions over and over again? I think it's GREAT because you get so many diverse answers over a period of a year or so...Thank goodness the search engine on the DIS boards are so lousy.
What about AIRTRAN, you guys? Any personal experience?
Kris10luvsDisney
01-29-2010, 08:47 AM
WCW, having been a travel agent in a previous life I would never fly Airtran. They are notorious for canceled flights, horrible customer service etc...to me it's not worth the few extra dollars you save vs. a bigger airline..
Denisees- if you want a ticker on your signature, go to one of the sites, pick out a ticker and enter your info. Then you have to copy the codes (it's usually the top one on the list they give you). Come back to the boards and click on "UserCP" (it's on the red bar at the top of this page). Then click on "edit signature" a blank white box will appear, and you can paste the link you just copied here. Click preview signature to see if it works and if it looks okay hit save signature and you should be all set to go!
It took forever for me to figure it out too! lol
We are almost at the 1 year mark! I can't believe it - I have been watching a disney cruise special we taped on travel channel a few weeks ago, and my kids are so excited to go already!!

We are so excited too!!!! Anyone have any ideas for any of the shore excursions?
Kris10luvsDisney
02-01-2010, 12:40 PM
My DH & I have done this itinerary (before kids on Princess Cruise line) and at Grand Cayman we loved the Stingray city excursion and the turtle farm. We also went to Hell, which wasn't all that exciting, but fun to say we had been to Hell & back!:lmao:
In Cozumel, we did a snorkeling excursion on a catamaran which was a lot of fun. I have never been to Key West, so if anyone has any suggestions about things to do there (with our kids) I would love to hear them!

Is it too early to ask if anyone wants to partake in the whole FE gifts? I have been reading the posts and it sounds like so much fun! Almost less than a year guys!!! so exciting!!!
BTW- can you tell I still cannot fix my ticker? the tech supp had not helped at all.... so sad...at the bottom it says can allow images on signature = NO--- why does it say that??
wcw57
02-04-2010, 09:15 AM
As far as the ticker thing: keep trying. It took me a few times before I figured out that I was copy/paste-ing too much (or too little? I forget) into the code box.....I was tutored by "she who must be obeyed" and it was nice of her to bother....
as far as FE gifts: I am torn. I really want my DGD to do this...it sounds like fun. On the other hand, I don't feel like running around the ship to distribute gifts (I am soooooo old sometimes!).....HOWEVER: Since it IS a 7 day voyage I should be able to get this done and tour the ship at the same time....so long as everyone doesn't want their gifts right away:lmao:
I also don't want to give trinkets to the adults. For a child, it is special...a birthday every day.....for an adult, it's still fun but who needs disney soap and playing cards?
SO: count me in for a kids FE. Not that I don't like you adults....just that kids are special.
Who will be in charge of this stuff? We need to keep a list of participants and maybe a map of room locations.
FURTHER: There was some talk, a while ago, about the Presidents of the Caribbean graphics.....anyone have any talent? I'm about maxed out with my computer savvy by logging into these boards and typing cogent sentences.;)
Anyhow.......be well, shipmates!
Kris10luvsDisney
02-08-2010, 01:26 PM
I would like to do the FE's too, but I am not crafty at all!:rotfl:
I also don't know how to do graphics for door magnets etc...I know there are some threads on the main DCL pages where if you provide the guest names, sailing date and what you are looking for, there are people who will put together a graphic for you. All you have to do is print them out and attach them to a magnet!:thumbsup2
We are supposed to be heading out to CA for vacation on Thursday, and this impending snow storm is not making that look good...enough of winter already!! (we will be hitting Disneyland for the first time and I can't wait!)

Been just monitoring this post for the last few months, not much of a poster myself, but with 1 year to go and the whole family wishing we were there now decided to join the crowd. I also think my sis and family who live on LI will be joining us as well so keep adding to the list of NYers and LIers!!! I will add them to my list when it is def. for the FE exchange which I still really want to do!!! (should I admit I am so crazy that I already picked up some little gifts I found here and there? :goodvibes) So here's to the countdown for less than a year to fellow "Presidents of the Caribbean"!!! I can't believe it's still a year away:confused:
We got together with our friends that we will be sailing with twice this week and the fact that it's a year away dominated the conversation both nights.
But you hit the nail on the head, next year at this time we'll all be alittle more relaxed. And it will be here before we know it. I can't believe we booked it 6 months ago already.

Hello all! We made it to CA and back in 1 piece! We ended up changing our flight to Friday morning just so we wouldn't have to worry about the weather or be stuck all day in an airport with 5 kids under the age of 10:scared1:
We had great weather did lots of sightseeing...whale watching, San Diego Zoo, Legoland, and of course Disneyland! We had beautiful weather all week, and it was a real bummer to come home and see snow on the ground:sad2:
First of all, welcome Maronvin! More NY'ers!!:cool1:

and she's changed her mind about karaoke night....we'll see about next month, but for now, she's not singing!
we gave her 361 pennies in a bag today....each day she moves one into her cruise bank....she'll visualize how many 361 days are (time is a hard concept) AND be able to countdown to the cruise......

At Disneyland I was excited to finally be able to ride Toy story mania, that was a lot of fun. Disneyland had a different feel to it vs. WDW, I enjoyed it, but nothing, to me, is the same as WDW. However, we did walk past GCV and it looks amazing, talk about rooms overlooking the theme park! I would love to stay there someday!
That is a great idea with the pennies..361 pennies doesn't sound like that far away!

HEY NYers!!!!!!!!!
here's an idea my tiny little brain just came up with....
jetblue offers group rates for groups of 8 or more.....IF we could agree to a travel time (preferably after school on FRI the 18th) we could MAYBE get a good rate......:cool1:
or, for those Long Islanders, maybe group rates on Southwest out of Macarthur? I haven't looked into it yet but MAYBEEEEEEEEE:confused3
anyone else interested?

I think we are going to try to fly out Thursday the 17th after school. So, I think we need to be more organized so that, when the REAL distractions kick in (close to sail time) we are set to go....
our TO DO LIST (as I see it) so far:
*work on graphics (or ignore)
*organize FE participants....start and keep a list....makes it easier to add last-minute details like room #'s.......also, need to set cut-off date
what else?

Hi all...another New Yorker going on this cruise!! I was on the Magic the week after it got stuck in Castaway Cay for the night, so we got on a day late. Disney treated us all very well, day in the parks, meal voucher, room for the night, stateroom credits, and 20% off as well! We could book a future cruise while on board for 20% off, so that's when I booked this one. I'll be there with DH, DD, DGD, DS and DDIL.
My only regret at this point is that I didn't book 2 future cruises! That lady on the ship had a long line all week. I think just about everyone booked again.
We live on Long Island, in Island Park, which is right next to Long Beach, which is well known. Looking forward to getting to know all of you.

We're DVC'ers too, greatest thing we ever bought. We started at SSR and just bought more points at Bay Lake Towers this summer. If you ever need to get rid of some points or need a few extra this website is great to do so. DW is a teacher so although we'd love to go a few days early we can't leave until Friday afternoon. But we're already talking about using our points to head down in June 2011. We just stopped by the DVC store at Roosevelt Field a few weeks ago and we have the itch to go, don't know if we can wait until next year.

Hi...my DGD Lauren will be 6 years and 1 month when we cruise, so she will age perfectly with ZuZu.
I should also mention that I work at the Disney Store in Roosevelt Field, so if any of you are at the mall, stop by and say hi. My next shift is this Saturday from 2 - 6 pm. We moved temporarily last week. We are in the old Apple store on the 2nd floor near Nordstorms. Our original location is getting a "magical makeover". We are also adding the store next to us, so it will be double the size. We are slated to reopen there in July. The store is going to be interactive (not really sure what they are doing), but it sounds good to me. It's supposed to be a DisneyWorld experience at home.

As far as needing passports, technically all you need is a certified copy of your birth certificate along with a valid government ID, but god forbid you need to come back to the US immediately from another port of call, you would not be allowed to do that without a passport. We are all going to have passports with us just to be safe.

I just booked this cruise! We were supposed to be doing the EB Trans, but as you may have noticed...the economy here in the D (Detroit) is not so great. Besides, the more I think about it, I don't want DD8 to miss 2+ weeks of school. This one will be during winter break here.
This will be our 4th DCL......so far only 3 and 4 nighters, so really looking forward to the longer time. (that was the draw of the Trans.)
All of our previous cruises have been last minute, so we haven't done the meet of FE's or anything.....but would LOVE to this time.
I'm from the Detroit area as well!! Being that it was winter break also made the decision to pull the kids outta school a bit eaiser LOL.

Hi, thanks for the welcome.
There will be 3 of us on this sailing.
Me Jewel (39)
DP Kellie (40)
DD Kylie (8)
Right now we have an inside cabin deck 7 aft.....at least close to the secret aft deck. Have always had a veranda, but with $$ tight it's either an inside or not go.....We all voted to go (of course.)
We cruised 2 Febs ago during Pres week.....it was pretty packed. I think this meet thread will really get busy as the cruise comes closer. I would do the FE's but never did before....other thing we may like to consider....

I really enjoy working there. It's fun to be able to make magic for other people, Disney music playing in the background, helping people to plan their trips to WDW. I started in 2002 and left at the end of 2004 to take care of DGD, who was born in Jan. 2005. When she was 3-1/2, I went back and intend to stay on now indefinitely. All the older people there, like me, are Disney geeks too, and I've actually made some good friends there. We have a lot in common, and have traveled together too, Disney of course. The perks at WDW help out a lot too, since we go a lot.

Even though I have a few trips coming up to other places this year --I find myself still so excited about this cruise next year!!!! Plus my DH- who doesn't seem to believe all the hype about Disney Cruises- has been hearing from friends and Co-workers, how great it is etc- so I think he is finally getting excited! Again- this is our first cruise EVER- so we are nervous and excited!! We def. want to do FE- just kids is fine w/ me too...as i have stated on previous posts- I have even picked up a few things already here and there that are cute for FEs. I think the FE director just has to keep track of participant and cabin number.....also decide if it will be kids only or adults too.
Tshirts..........design a logo photoshop
Bracelets are the rubber ones (with a title and date)......can order online about $2 each.
FE's fish extenders.....small token gifts (kinda like secret santa)
Meets.....get together of DISers at beginning of cruise
Tour.....volunteer from each cabin cat. to visit and see what they look like.

Thanks for the warm welcome! It really is shaping up to be a Northeast Cruise!
We are in for the meet and door graphics. Not coordinated enough to be the FE director - barely keeping my head above water with the kids, work and house. I really need to sit down and do some research on excursions, Palo reservations, where to stay the night before, etc. I think I have plenty of time but the next 10 months will probably fly by and we will be packing for the cruise before we know it!

You do one FE per participant....
so far, we are discussing a kids-only FE so each of your offsprings would get a pocket on the FE.....
I hope you join us.
If you do, don't forget to let us know names and ages of cruisers and your location, please.
How would you like to be IN CHARGE of the FE? We would gladly pay you off in free hot dogs for the length of the cruise...:lmao:

we would definatley like to be part of the FE ....
being that I have never done it before, I dont think I would be the right person to take charge of it... we are very close to to booking. I recieved a quote last night from a travel agent in Texas that is over $1000 cheaper then Disney gave me directly
the 4 of us (wife and 2 daughters 3&6) would be coming from NY to join all of you
wcw57
04-09-2010, 08:24 AM
be wary of weird price quotes....chances are, one you add the taxes and fees the prices will be the same....Disney does not discount cruise prices (except for special deals...kids sail free, etc) and the travel agent bargains are usually in OBC's.....
However, it IS possible that your agent has "group rate" blocks and may have lightly better rates than normally posted.......DO check them out carefully.
AND let us know how you made out! always looking for bargains:thumbsup2
Where in NY are you guys?
There seems to be a good group of playmates for my little ZuZu coming along on this cruise.
GOOD LUCK AND HOPE TO ADD YOU TO OUR LIST SOON!!!!!
by the way, being a FE director only means you have to keep a running list of participants, ages, and room #'s.....this is the last time I am going to prod the group about this. Eventually a FE director will arrive or we won't have any FE's. Either way, I've done my part.

Definitely interested in being part of FE for the kids. I realized I only gave my name at my first post . My DH is Joe-43 at time of cruise. My DD is Tatum-10 at time of cruise.
We are definitely early risers, plan on doing excursions (unsure of what at this time-any suggestions?), and I think we we are planning to spend Thursday and Friday night at WDW. We are new DVC owners, and it would be our first experience staying on points.:thumbsup2

We are heading down a couple of nights early. I put a hold on a room at the Country Inn & Suites but am hoping to score a deal either there or someplace else nearby. We are hoping to fly from Hartford to Orlando but may switch to another airport if we can get cheaper fares. Our other thought is to get a rental car and return it Friday night, take a shuttle from the hotel to the port. More than likely we will get some sort of shuttle or service from the port to the airport but I really don't want to think about returning home after the cruise. ;)

Hello everyone!
I have been MIA for a little bit...my kids sports schedules have started again and I seem to have no time for my DIS fix!:rotfl2:
Our kids don't tend to sleep late EVER, so I imagine we will be early risers. We have done this itinerary before on Princess, but this is the first time with the kiddos so we are planning on taking advantage of the shore excursions.
We are flying down on the Thursday before the cruise and staying 2 nts at WDW, then we will take their bus to the port.
Our cabin is on deck 7, we are booked in a Cat. 9A :goodvibes
p.s. we are almost under 300 days until our cruise!!!

We are early risers and are looking forward to shore excursions. We have heard from others that the Dolphin excursion is a lot of fun. OK thanks to Denise for volunteering for the FE director! I'll give you my info as soon as you get set and let us know.
Our stateroom is 7545. We've NEVER cruised before despite DH begging me to do so. I've always been leery but then we had kids, fell in love with Disney all over again and thought this was a perfect opportunity to "do" Disney again without the parks. I've never heard one person tell me that they didn't have an amazing vacation on a Disney Cruise. We're so excited!
As far as excursions go....other than biking around CC, I don't have anything planned at this time. I seriously wanna lay my butt on the beach and soak up the sun and the beautiful scenery. I'm open to amazing suggestions but again, cant see myself venturing out too far into the country as far as Mexico goes.

mexico is OK so long as you're not near the U.S. boarder BUT it still is a big poop hole which does nothing (little) to discourage the boarder-war problems.....not political, just fact:worship:

Bill,
You hit the nail on the head...that was the DW. You can tell by the font, I can't do anything fancy like that and your right I have to work during the summer.
Our friends are Keith and Dawn and they have a DS, Nick who will be 9 and DD, Brianna who will also be 9. And yes they are another group of Long Islanders.
So when is the pre-cruise party?:dance3:

vin: work at the yaphank yard...we know a few people there......
wow! pre-cruise party?
that will be tough because of the proximity to the holidays, i think.....HOWEVER, january is a looooooong month.....
if i remember correctly, there are a LOT of LI'ers, some upstaters, and out-of-towners. NYC seems to be the logistical answer IF someone were to try to arrange such a thing....seems to me, vin, that your DW was ready to volunteer for the FE director position and now has nothing to do....:confused3;)
thanx for the info regarding your friends

we will most likely be taking a direct flight from Albany NY to Orlando...does anyone suggest spending the extra money to fly in the night before and staying at a hotel? also, has anyone used a limo for transfers instead of the Disney bus? would be intrested to hear from mroe experienced cruisers on both subjects!!! Thanks
and I already started picking things up for the FE..so lets keep the intrest alive!!
wcw57---we decided to book directly through DCL for now..if we find a better deal, we can always transfer the reservation. the folks in Texas just seemed a little sketchy and I didt want to risk it
Before I had kids I worked as a travel agent and I would def. recommend going a day early if you can. With the crazy NY winter weather, there is nothing worse than being stranded in an airport and not making it to port in time to meet the ship. I can't tell you how many times I had clients who missed getting to the ship and had to meet up with it later in the itinerary. Not a fun way to start your trip!
As far as shore excursions I would like to take my kids to see the turtle farm in Grand Cayman. I'd also like to do Stingray city, but with them being only 8 & 5 at time of sailing it might be a little overwhelming for them. We may just try to see the stingrays at CC. Anyone have any suggestions for kid friendly Key West sights?
wcw57
04-20-2010, 11:23 AM
kid friendly in Key West? a lot depends on what your kids like....a LOT of Key West is shops and BARS....
I personally liked the tour train/trolley....pay, get on and off as you wish, buy kitschy touristy souvenirs, get back off at starting point.....do a google search and see where the trolley goes.
avoid hemingway museum with the kids....
there was a shack-type restaurant made from corrugated steel where you write your names on the wall....burgers and fries and fried conch...very cool.
not sure if we'll be there for sundown but there is the big festival (crazy) at Duvall Street (I think) and that's a LOT of fun
other than that, at Key West there are a LOT of BARS!

I have not been on the boards for awhile and I can see you took on the FE project. If you are overwhemled by it let me know. We have done these in the past and it is now old hat. The only tough part was keeping track of cruisers changing cabins on embarkation day. For you NY'ers we went into the city on Good Friday to visit the MOMA. Ended up walking throughout the city as it was a beautiful day. We went to Rockefeller center, times square, Gramercy park and walked up Park Ave. I still do not know how anyone deals with the driving there.
For the ports. Not much to do in Key West. Walk around the shops and wait for the sunset at Mallory square. We did the trolley last time and we all thought it was quite expensive and boring. For Grand Cayman we went to Stingray City by jetski's. We had a great time. You spend about half an hour at the site and then head over to Run Point beach. Lot's of jetski time and some great sites. For Cozumel I am thinking on heading over to Chakabaub state park. You can swim with the dolphins there and some tablemates raved about doing this the last time.

I know Key West & kids shouldn't be in the same sentence...lol I know what I would like to do if they weren't with me!! (parked at a bar on Duval St. people watching);) I thought I had read that you could rent bikes and toot around town for a few hours. My kids love to bike ride, but the thought of my DS biking in Key West is a little scary! :scared1: We may just take a few hours to walk around get some souvenirs, take a picture at the buoy thingy and hopefully we will get to take in one of those famous sunsets I keep hearing so much about!
Thanks for the heads-up on the museum Bill. I think we will skip that for this visit:thumbsup2

Good Morning,
We are about 45 minutes from Boston. We took the kids into the city to see their first game at Fenway Tuesday night. ( Please do not hate us New Yorkers we have friends that like the Yankees).
We actually live much closer to Providence- Right down the road (rt 44) from Taunton.
We are really excited about coming. We have taken the kids to Disney several times but DH needs a break from the parks. He said when you know where every bathroom is without a map it is time for a break. lol
We are booked in room 5013. I did a search and it said that some people request that room so I hope it is a good one. Not that I have anything to compare it to. I like that it is right down the hall from the oceaneer's lab. That should be convenient. My kids are all excited to have some kid fun without us....should I feel upset?
I have questions about FE's. If our kids participate- do we distribute things to everyone everyday....or only 1 day?? What kinds of stuff is involved. Would I need another bag to get this stuff home??? TIA Monique:goodvibes

I have been away from the thread for some time. Seems like a lot of planning going on. We (DH and I) just returned from a week in central Florida- half the time with family, the other half at WDW! We had a great time!! :)
So now that we are back I took out the Feb 19th cruise folder. So far, there is not much in it- just my reservation and two car rentals- one to port, one from port.
Flights seem to be outrageous:scared1: , so we will wait and see what happens.
I know this will sound crazy- but we are upstate new yorkers and boston fans. My family loves the yankees so it always makes baseball season difficult.
Lastly, I am glad to see we are past the 300 day mark! :dance3:

I am excited too! We don't have any other trips from now until then, so nothing else to distract me!;)
We do not either, so I guess that is why I have jumped back on board this thread since this is our next trip.
A few posts back there was some discussion about Key West- I would like to add a suggestion-
Last cruise on the Magic (we have only been on that one), we made sure to get some bottled water and gatorade on board. It was a pain to carry around. You could put it with your luggage, but this time, we will just buy some in port at Key West and bring it back on board. And/or if you do forget anything you can pick it up in Key West! :)
Also, last time we went to some place south of Playa Del Carmen, I cannot remember the name. It was a very newly developed port with a giant shopping mall. We ventured out of the area and found a cute beach town and spent the day at a beach club. So we will be excited to go to Cozumel for the first time.
Lastly, the day we were schedule to go to sting ray city on Grand Cayman, it was too windy. The trip was cancelled. This time we will consider staying closer to port since we spent so much time travelling and not much time doing anything.
In a few hundred days we will be on board! :woohoo:

I agree, Summer Doldrums is a laugh in MA. Frost warnings, starting the woodstove again, dressing like an eskimo for baseball and softballs games, I've had it!!!! It is May for goodness sakes!
But speaking of the weather, does anyone have an idea of what the air/water temps will be like on the cruise? We had to choose Feb vacation because of school and my husband's business but I am hoping that it will be warm. Granted it has got to be warmer than MA in February.
A's Princess
05-11-2010, 09:15 AM
I too am feeling the chill in W Mass. For once my procrastination paid off - no frost on my plants that weren't planted yet! But my hallway looks like a green house with all the hanging baskets, flats and pots!
It will be nice to have a warm week in February! Here's what I found out about the water temperature:
Caribbean (in general)
Temperatures between summer and winter don't normally vary much more than five degrees in the Caribbean. The average temperature is about 80° year-round. Naturally, southern islands tend to be a little warmer than the northern ones. For example, Curaçao's southern location keeps its summer average at 83° and winter at 80°, while the northern Bahamas (Nassau) vary from a summer average of 81° down to a cool 69° average in the winter. There is a wet and dry season, with most rain falling between May/June and October/November. However, location and topography, such as rain shadows created by mountains, can play an important role in local weather conditions. Keep in mind that those cold fronts in the U.S. that dip down from the north can keep right on dipping to most of the northern islands, bringing cool temperatures and rough water in their wake.
http://www.diveglobal.com/explore_destinations/calendar/seasonal.asp
And air temps:
During February the temperatures in the Caribbean typically vary between a daily high of about 82.4 degrees and a daily low of approximately 72.1 degrees. During the month of February, it rains an average of 8.7 days. Total precipitation during the month averages 1.9 inches. Bear in mind, however, that all precipitation, no matter how slight, is considered in the tables on this page.

when will southwest post dates for Feb?...thru jan now
by the way, the people in charge of group travel at jetblue are complete...ummmm....fools. i had another word in mind but self-edited.
you can find the group rates once the regular rates are posted....of course, if there are very good deals on the web, you will have missed them once you wait to hear from the folks at jetblue (I actually had to email the company office to shake even this simple info out of the group travel office....they tell you they are very busy and will get back to you and, of course, they don't)......
southwest offers a 10% discount but NOT on any special web rates....not that they'll be any deals during Pres Week;)

ALL OTHERS: review your info
Denise: Yesterday I posted a lengthy reply but my computer hiccuped and it is not here.....so:
Post only the relevant info regarding participants as listed in the previous posts...this is tedious BUT it should save some confusion
you might need 2 lists....one for adults participating, one for the kids.
You will need to include room #'s eventually on the list so save a space for that info
here is mine....1 child ONLY participating in FE...age 6 when cruising....room # 5518
you probably won't need to update this list very often since there is VERY low volume of posts on this meet thread....not much enthusiasm here...I know its far away but once school starts then its the holidays then we leave....POOF! :wizard: time all gone
Further, you need to set a cut-off date so we don't have to run around last minute buying/making stuff for the FE stragglers....I suggest Jan14, 2011.....anybody else?????!!!!

We joined DVC in 2002 and have no regrets, it has already paid for itself. I have been told that the best deals are on the cruise so if you have the time I'd sit down with them in February. We actually sold last year's points on the WDWINFO website and used it to pay for a trip we're going on to Beaches in Turks at the end of the month, so getting rid of points you can't use isn't a problem.

We will be on this cruise! It's our 1st cruise ever & it was a no brainer that we would go w/DCL. We are from the Chicago area, something different from all the NY'er's & MA folks here.;) Our older DS has 2 days off of school that week so he won't miss a full week. It will be DH, me, & our 2 DS's (5 yrs & 2 yrs).
We choose not to participate in the FE exchange, if that's okay.
As far as excursions, this is what I am thinking at this point:
Key West - aquarium & butterfly conservatory (my boys love animals so this is a definite)
Cozumel - semi sub ride (we did this in Turks & Caicos & it was the highlight of our trip)
Grand Cayman - Boatswain's marine park (again animals)
CC - hang out on the beach
I would love to do the dolphin swim, but no one else in my family will join me. So maybe some other time.
If we enjoy the cruise (by this I mean if DH enjoys it)(fingers crossed!), then we will be rebooking on board to cruise again in 2012.

We will be on this cruise! It's our 1st cruise ever & it was a no brainer that we would go w/DCL. We are from the Chicago area, something different from all the NY'er's & MA folks here.;)

I don't expect to do any excursions.

NICE LIST!
not many names on there but 21 people are enough to buy for....if we double the amount between now and cut-off date (when is the cut-off date?) we might consider dividing into groups so we won't go broke buying/making gifts.
QUESTION:
we made a payment towards the balance yesterday. Today I received an email with a "reservation confirmation"....it had all the exact same info as before (names, room, number, etc) but we now have been given a $25 OBC. Anybody else get the OBC? Whats this all about:confused3
I'm thankful for the credit but don't know why I have been chosen.....:thumbsup2:lmao:

Hello Everyone,
Since we are DCL newbies I have been trying to do as much research as possible. The FE exchanges sound great, but I need more info please. I tried to search FE guidelines and I got about 75 pages of how to make one. I want to know about protocol for the exchanges.....Do we bring one set of ___________ and distribute it at a certain time? Are they anonymous or are we supposed to state who they are from? I need to know HOW to participate. Expectations??Hints?? I don't want to mess this stuff up. Oh and what happens if someone gets upgraded or something and they are not in the room number that we have??? Thanks in advance. We are looking forward to a great trip. :goodvibes

WELCOME!
as per FE:
you can make/buy anything at all you feel would be appropriate...that is, a box of crayons, a magnet, a Cadillac, even a hand-made replica of the Magic constructed from toothpicks and lint removed from your left sock:lmao:
you may make/get all one type of thing (bearing in mind that it should be "unisex") or get different things for everyone.
you can participate for children only or for adults only or for both
(DENISE: ANY ADULTS?)
in short, you can do anything you want in any fashion you want....there is a thread where people show off their FE gifts....if I find it, I'll post it for you:thumbsup2
I have an idea what I want to make but it may cost too much moohlah and my DGD is supposed to help me BUT that probably won't happen:thumbsup2
you can let people know that the gift was from you (name tag) or not....up to you
I personally plan to deliver a few FE gifts each day....we have a week to do it and that way I can explore more of the ship and won't have to carry around a large bag of goodies like some deranged Santa who is running 2 months late:rotfl2:
anyhow.....there will be more info flying on this meet board soon, I am sure....
please post any questions and we'll see who has answers...
of course, I've been posting a LOT of questions with very few responses over the past few months.
Thanks for the info regarding the OBC, by the way, Egg!

Denise,
Can you please add Nicholas (9) and Brianna (9) to the list, it's also their first cruise and they'll be staying right next to us, I believe in room 6060.
We just got off the plane from Turks and Caicos last night and couldn't believe how hot it was here, then went home to a broken AC. So we were locked in the basement too!
As for transportation to the hotel that someone asked about, there is a company that advertises on the WDWINFO site that is about half the price of the Disney shuttle. As for hotel shuttles to the port, my wife looked into it a few months back and many of them had shuttles for a $5 fee, just check with whatever hotel you plan on booking in first.

Thanks WCW57.
That was very helpful. So we can drop off a few at a time. That is good to know. I also had an image of running around the ship- probably on an at sea day- trying to find everyone's rooms. It would have been a good bit of exercise though.

We did! Loved it! You are right, the ocean is beautiful! So clear. It will be hot, but you have plenty of pools & the ocean to keep you cool. My boys loved everything about Beaches. A stingray swam by DH & DS while they were standing in the ocean near the shore. DS was so excited.
Oh, there was this dessert at Barefoot By the Sea that was unbelievable. It was a passion fruit mousse w/homemade strawberry ice cream. WOW!
We also did a semi submarine ride that was amazing. The boys were able to see ocean life w/o having to know how to snorkel.
You'll have a great time!

NEMO-- I have to ask you more questions about T & C!!!!-- first thanks for the dessert tip!!! What did you think about the New Italian Village?? They were just building it when we were there 2 yrs ago.....Where did you do the semi- sub ride??-- off site I am assuming?- so can I book it through the conceirge at Beaches?-- my DDS & DS would love it!!-- very into "sea creatures" right now- for some reason.....- we are even having LIVE "Nemos- and some of the other live fish including a "Mr. Ray" touch pool- for my DDs
7th bday party when we get back.....should be saving more $$ for this cruise instead.....:guilty: but I think it is perfect for her Sea Creature Party!!!
thanks for the help!!!
And WCW- I will work on the adults FE--- dont you want a little something??-- perhaps with a little bit of pixie dust a fairy will surprise you!? ;)

We are going to opt out of the FE. Thanks for organizing it Denise! Have fun at Beaches - good friends of ours go every year and rave about it.
Bueller here. In terms of hotels at PC we have reservation at Country Inn & Suites but am shopping around for a better price. Hotwire has a 2 1/2 star hotel (assuming its CI&S) for $73 per night for 2/17 & 2/18. There is a 3 star for $101.15 per night and I am guessing it is the Radisson. We are applying for DH & the kids' passports this afternoon (rumor mill has the prices going up Monday) and we just got hit with a big bill to fix our AC so I am not booking the hotel this month. Next month (8/17 to be exact) Southwest opens up reservations for Feb 2011 so I'll hopefully get a good deal on our flights :goodvibes So we will probably do the rental car and hotel in Sept.

We stayed in the Italian Village & it was very nice. We used that pool the whole time. Yes, the sub ride was off site. You need to book it thru concierge. Actually, the owner of the sub told me they have an agreement thru Beaches that all bookings need to be done thru Beaches, not them directly. The shuttle picks you up at Beaches & takes you to the dock (about 10 min ride). We saw lots of different size fish, sea turtles, barracudas, puffer fish, & coral. A really nice husband & wife from New Zealand run the tour.
Sounds like a great party! Is it at a location?
Let me know if you have any other questions!

I have been very absent on these boards recently, but am getting excited about our upcoming cruise! :cool1:
We, DH and I, will opt out of the FE. It is a lot of fun for kids (even though we are kids at heart) and I will likely be overwhlemed and stuggle with getting all of our stuff to fit in the suit cases.
I see some chatter about the night before the cruise. We will likely stay at the Hyatt at MCO. I have a voucher that I have not used yet (we were booked for this past Feb, but transferred our ressie to 2011).
I wonder what people are doing for transportation? I have a budget rental car booked for each Saturday 56.03 for the 19th and 71.19 for the 26th. We like to have the freedom to stop, or should I say we like to have the freedom to go to a store on the way (on our first and only cruise, DH forgot his contacts at home- this was before we had a GPS and it was a struggle to find a lens crafters, and buy some contacts then make the boat!! :headache:)
Excited and can't wait! A great group and I can oin the teacher list, well, sort of, since I am a school counselor. We chose this week since I had the week off. :goodvibes

Beaches was great, the boys tried to get us to rebook for next year but we already have the cruise planned and we do Lake George every year. While you're standing on Beaches property looking out at the water about 500' to your right there is a reef you can walk to. Just grab your snorkeling gear from the office near the all the water activies. Don't miss it and don't waste your money on the Kitty Kat, the snorkeling was just as good right off the beach. Enjoy the trip!

Yea!:yay: I had a successful morning on the phone- we are now booked for the Hyatt @ MCO and United flights down on Friday the 18th and back on Sunday the 27th.
Over a year ago, we bought a Choice Voucher from Hyatt for the Feb 10 cruise we ended up postponing until Feb 11. I was able to use that for our overnight at the airport.
And this past April when we went to WDW, we chose to get bumped and arrive a few hours later for free vouchers. Those were accepted too!
Two major reservations done!
Now maybe I should do something productive around the house....:laundy:

Wow, you have taken care of alot. I booked DCL transfers, but that's it. We will fly SWA & those flights don't come out til the fall. I still need to book Hyatt MCO too.
I have been trying to find things to wear. I am struggling w/what to wear for formal night. I also need to buy a tie & slacks for my toddler.
After Halloween, I will get the pirate costumes for the boys & DH. I'm not sure I want to get into a full costume. I may get a few pieces to wear w/what I have.
