What is the best time to go on an Alaskan Cruise?
What are good side trips/land excursions for various ports?
What is the temperature on an Alaska cruise? Is it quite cold, given the glaciers and icebergs?
What will I need to wear on an Alaska cruise? Will I need to pack my winter clothes and a cold weather jacket?
What is the best pre or post cruise tour out of Vancouver?
Where is the best place to view bald eagles in Alaska?
Where is the best place to view bears on other wildlife in Alaska?
I don’t have much extra in my budget for shore excursions (and some run over $300 per person!) What are some fun yet inexpensive things to do while in port?
Is it true that not all cruise ships stop in Glacier Bay National Park? I heard that this was one of the most beautiful spots in Alaska and want to see it.
My favorite cruise line does not stop in glacier Bay. What is a good alternative destination?
What about icebergs? Aren’t they dangerous? Will we see any?
Can never get to much info.....so
1. Spend time reading the Alaska board at Cruise Critic - http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=55
2. Read books. My top two recommendations are:
- Frommer's Alaska by Charles Wohlforth: http://www.amazon.com/Frommers-Alask...4226021&sr=8-1 This is the 2010 edition coming out in December. I prefer this to the Frommer's or Fodor's "ports of call" books.

SIDE NOTES AND TIPS:
1). When checking out hotels be sure to ask them to give you the US rate because when they give you a price it will be in Canadian prices. Also be sure to ask how much in taxes...in other words be sure to ask for the full price in American $$$$$
2) If you have a Disney rewards Visa use it for everything so you can get the reward $$$$. You can use the earned reward dollars for your ship excursions, merchandise, and at guest services to pay anything Disney on the ship. We use ours for everything that we would use the cash that we have for than I go online in a couple days and transfer the funds from my checking account to the card. No CC balance. But lots of reward $$$$. You will be surprised how fast it all adds up.

My DH and I have booked a Navigators Veranda room on deck 7. We will be in late seating for dining. We had decided we would take a year off from Disney and go elsewhere in 2011. Then Alaska was announced, and that was one of the cruises we were looking for. It was perfect.
DH birthday is on 5/15, mine is the 5/18, so we will be celebrating both during the cruise (mine a few days early, but that's ok.)

My DH and I are booked on this cruise. We have a Cat. 9, midship, 2068. We just got back from our first cruise on the 27th of Sept, and rebooked a dummy date on that cruise so that we could change it one day (plus a two hour hold, LOL!!) later to the Alaska cruise!!

My husband and I are REALLY looking forward to this! I see you are in Calgary... We are in Northern AB, GP to be exact and this is the perfect opportunity to cruise without $5500 in airfare. We do Disneyland every year... thought we'd change it up a bit. Looking forward to maybe meeting some dis-ers that we could join as table mates. I sure hope more families book soon. Though... my kids would be fine if they were nearly alone in the kids clubs!

I have a feeling that our kids will have the run of the clubs! :goodvibes Which is good because then they will probably get more attention from the counselors. :thumbsup2
Hopefully they still have all the character meets that they have on the Caribbean sailings. Last cruise we had to skip the princess meet because the line was an hour long! :scared1::sad2:

I agree! :thumbsup2
As long as they don't cut down on activities, then this is fabulous!! No lines for food, great seats in the WDT right before the show, no waiting for an hour for princesses
They better have those yummy chicken strips on board! ;) ::yes::
I looked at the DCL website the other day and the price for our cabin went up $300 :scared1: This is the first increase I have seen since we booked on board last October!
moomy-san
06-25-2010, 12:47 PM
Do they sometimes cut back on activities if the ship isn't really booked up? That would suck!!! I am sure looking forward to those chicken strips... every 2nd trip report mentions them!
Our stateroom $$$ dropped quite a bit the day we booked so we were lucky, were able to move up to a cat 6 verandah. YAY! I'm not brave enough to go and check and see the price now. If it's dropped I'd be bummed. Since we've never cruised before we didn't want to start with REALLY awesome rooms, because it'd be hard to settle for less if we ever had to. So start middle and work our way up if need be.

Geez, where is everyone??? It must be nice to have a life :rolleyes1 :lmao:
So, I just checked our cruise again on dcl.com and guess what? The price has dropped again!
I find this all very weird because I had checked it not too long ago and it jumped over $400 more and now it is actually the same price as we paid with our 10% OBC!! :scared1:
So I sent Dreams an email to see if we are eligible for that price drop, which after the OBC should save us another $200 or so. :thumbsup2

Yes, the chicken strips are amazing!!! It's been a staple for us on all 4 cruises
I'm pretty sure that if the price of your cruise drops, you can contact whomever you booked it through and get that price decrease. I believe you can do this right up until your final payment is due :thumbsup2
And I totally wouldn't say that a category 6 is a "middle" room  :rotfl::rotfl2:

I checked the price for my stateroom, and the price increased $500 .
I've been on cruises where they weren't booked to capacity, and they do not cut things back.
I can't wait. I'm curious if they are going to switch the menus, and what shows are going to be on the Wonder when we go.
I'm excited to be on the Wonder, I haven't been on it since our first cruise, because we decided 4 days wasn't long enough.
Only 311 more days.:cool1:

But I am really hoping that someone from the Alaska Maiden Voyage will post live and fill us in on some of the details :goodvibes There's tons of DISers on that sailing so we might luck out :thumbsup2
I am also excited to cruise on the Wonder, it will be our first time since all our previous cruises have been on the Magic.
So where's James with some pics from his double dip? :rolleyes1

I checked yesterday and there is still tons of staterooms left on this cruise! Unless they drop the prices dramatically, I think our sailing will be empty! :thumbsup2

Sorry folks for the lack of commitment on here. Now that I am caught up on the posts. Timon, surprisingly I didn't get any pics up online from my recent double-dip, but it was tons of fun of course!
My wife and I just returned from Disneyland and a friends wedding in Los Angeles, both were awesome! We renewed our season pass (one of them) and drove back home to the San Francisco Bay Area.
We are really considering driving to Vancouver for the cruise! There will be lots to see on the way there and we don't have to worry about how much to pack and get charged for it! We never have been up to Oregon and Washington, much less Vancouver, so we're looking forward to it!
I'm going to have to check to see if our room has been priced dropped, we booked through DVC. Can't wait for February, when the excursions are open for booking.
Talk to you all soon. I updated the 1st post to reflect the families and the information that was posted earlier.

For those who are driving, I found this at http://www.daysinnvancouver.com/downtown-hotel-packages.html
They have a cruise option, it says it is only available for 2010, but I booked it for the night before the cruise in 2011. :cool1:
One night stay in a Queen guestroom
Chocolates Upon Hotel Arrival
Breakfast in the morning (value up to $10.00/person)
Valet Parking for night(s) in hotel
Extended parking for car during cruise available for $10/night (7 nights +)
Shuttle drop-off with luggage to Canada Place Cruise Ship Terminal or Ballantyne Cruise Ship Terminal**
For the above package it was $169.99 Canadian before taxes.
$10 a day for parking while on the cruse, which is awesome, over half off of the pier rate. It is about 3 blocks from Canada Place. Just wanted to share.

I live in Calgary AB which is a 11 hour drive from Vancouver but we are still thinking of flying just because the parking can be very pricey :scared1:
But I did look into alot of different hotels in the area (type in Hotels near Vancouver port) that will offer a cruise deal and if you schedual one a free shuttle service to the port :thumbsup2 There are better prices than the $186 out there but not many.. "apparently" being right by the port is the creme de la creme..lol :snooty:
We were thinking of going a few days before the cruise and seeing the sites of Vancouver (been there many times before and just love the sights) Always love Stanley Park and want to explore Granville Island (College trendy shops/cafe's etc) I do have family on Vancouver Island but it is too far away to stay with them.. plus the ferry isn't always on time ;)
I have been looking into the ports to see what we can do there and seeing as we are on kinda a budget there are some very cool choices I have found. The most expensive thing we will be doing is the White pass trail with the railroad (Skagway) the only other one we might fork over the cash for is a whale sightseeing/ Mendehall glacier (Juneau) I want to see the towns and eat some of the local caught fish ( I know meals are free on the ship.. but but but FRESH!!!!! fish how can I say no??) I am hoping to have a new camera and take some very fantastic pictures to show friends and family our adventure :goodvibes
Our saddest news is our Table mates have chosen to cancel their trip with us so we will be a table for 2 but thats ok My husband and I can talk ourselves deaf ;) :lmao: I find it kinda weird with our lives, all of our friends are entering the family stage and we are just exiting that phase (early starter ;) ) we are entering our "Golden years" before 40 lol and we can finally afford trips and the like.. so we have determined.. ok I have determined that every 2 years we go somewhere spiffy :goodvibes
I hope we all have a blast and the ship is truely not that empty when we go... If the cruise doesn't do well this year do you think they will cancel anymore to Alaska?? if so this might be the one and only year to see it with Disney?? So many questions.. oh and what is pirate night gonna be replaced with???
LOL anyways lets get this thread really rolling!! :cool1:

We are driving too... from Northern Alberta. We'll split it into 2 days, and arrive in Vancouver on Sunday, so we'll have a bit of time to explore (read: shop) We usually fly to CA to DLR, so we decided if we chose a more $$$ holiday we'd need to drive.
I am worried about the ship being too empty. So far it really looks like the kids clubs could be almost empty. My kids would actually probably prefer it that way, but having SOME kids in the clubs would be fun! But with school still being in session, and this not really being a 'kids' destination, you never know.
I can't wait to hear about Pirate night and some other more specialized Alaska themed activities. And I haven't even dared look into many excursions, because I know the train (which would be so lovely) is out of the question for my kids. They'd have their i-pods out in 5 seconds flat and miss the whole adventure.

Well Alaska is a sightseeing kinda place.. no real rides except the train/boat and one tramway. I hope your kids will see Alaska for the real raw beauty it is.. so few places untouched as this one left in the world. They will have fun in the clubs no matter what and if it is as empty as we are seeing so far they might even get "extra" neat things to do! I am still looking forward to this cruise no matter what! :goodvibes Hey maybe all the people on this thread should link tables?..lol I still think we are only gonna take up one section..lol everyone will get their own waiter at this point.. hey maybe we will all get breakfast in bed every morning?..LOL

I kind of agree with you. My wife and I are not exactly socialites, but enjoy a good conversation. I wouldn't mind eating a Palo's every night, although I would be a blimp.
I'm not 100% if we are driving at this point, but it is definitely looking that way. We plan to stop in Seattle and check it out overnight before heading over the border to Vancouver. We're leaving from the San Francisco area, so it will be a good 17 hour drive if we went non-stop.
Less than a year to go and even less then that when the excursions can be booked!
Hopefully more people will join this thread, or you're right, we will each have a waiter or we will be the only table. It will be kind of like a VIP experience on the DW.

Driving the coastline down to San Fran was actually going to be our honeymoon trip but we fell short of funds and time..lol We have been to San Fran tho but only a day trip from Sacramento.. it was AWESOME! we want to go back again and really get a chance to explore the city... a day is NOT enough ;)
I guess what I am really looking forward to on this trip is sitting with a nice cup of hot coffee and watching the coastline slide by... mmmm paradise.. Both my husband and I are not hot place lovers so when this trip came up we were all over it like syrup on a pancake :thumbsup2 but it seems all the trips other than this one are in the heat (I love the air conditioning inventor!!) Well I can vouch for supper! :cloud9: but my husband and I love seafood and the brunch looks like it serves a lot of that :cool1:
So I would suggest booking the one you really want and when you get on the ship go to the courtesy desk and see if they have openings for the other.. if the ship is as empty as it seems they will have room me thinks ;)
The other regular meals that we are served at supper were very good and I don't think I wanna miss any this time so thats why we are going with brunch as well. Also this time I think we might partake of the breakfast served in the dinning rooms this time.. nothing wrong with the buffet but I like the pampered feeling I get by being served.. LOL and after all we are paying enough to deserve it as well..LOL And this time I really want to try the room service!! Our last trip we had 4 of us in the room (two adults one 20 year old and one 17 year old) so no one ever wanted to stay in the room for too long.. LOL waaaaaay too crowded :scared1: and the mess!! :scared1::scared1:

Hi everyone,
I met my kids' dad on an Inside Passage ferry almost 20 years ago, and I'm looking forward to showing my daughters (ages 8 and 10) how beautiful it is up there. My husband is no longer with us, but he loved Disney (he named his first dog Mickey, after the mouse), and he loved Alaska, so he will be with us in his fun-loving spirit.
We'll be early diners, and we'll take as many excursions as we can. I'm more excited about this cruise than my kids are!
Can anyone tell me what the door magnets are all about?

I’m just visiting your thread. Our family is Cruising in Alaska on the July 5th sailing. You noted that the Exclusive Lumberjack Show is sold out by Disney. Have you considered booking it on your own? We did. You can go directly to their website and buy tickets for the 4:45 show (you can walk back to the ship just like the Disney tour). We are skipping the Disney tours and hiring a private driver.
The driver plus the show (4 adult tickets) is costing us about $385. He is going to take us to Totem Bight State Park, try to show us some bears, salmon spawning, an active eagle’s nest, some nice photo spots and a tour of Ketchikan.

Yeah, we considered booking it on our own, we were hoping the exclusive would have characters LOL Like we won't see enough on the ship, but I'm a disney geek. We aren't sure what will fit in with the schedule, so we are just going to play it by ear, It isn't one that is a must for us, it's one we'd like to see, but not a deal killer.

I will be celebrating my birthday on the sail away day as well. This will be our 4th Disney Cruise and the second time we will be sailing away on my birthday. The first was on the 2008 Panama Canal westbound repo.
MysticDDA I'll be celebrating my birthday on the sail away too! Good to know someone else also celebrates around mothers day.

We were given Alaska 2011 scarves when DCL announced they were going to Alaska at the D23 Expo in September, 2009. I almost can't believe we are getting close to actually using them over a year and a half later! Can hardly wait!:yay:

Well with the new Kids sail free promotion they just announced for the Alaska cruise, we have switched from the West Coast REPO cruise in April to this one.
This thread is a lot lighter than that one but I am excited to be on this cruise and get to know some of you before we sail.
We are just down the road from Vancouver a little north of Seattle so this is really going to help for logistics.
It will be me, my wife, son (10), and daughter (4).

Hi all, and sorry to crash your thread. But I am stressing about one excursion and I am hoping there is someone here who might be willing to provide some information for me. The excursion is Glacier View Sea Kayaking in Juneau, and I would be ever so grateful to know two things:
1. Is this excursion sold out on your cruise yet?
2. Are there multiple times offered? (And if so, what are those times?) (Oops, I guess that might be three things.)
Thank you and happy planning!

Hi,
I just took a quick look and the excursion not offered on this cruise.
Thank you very much for checking. It is puzzling that this excursion would not be available on your cruise--when I read about it on the DCL website it didn't say "seasonal" so I can't imagine why it wouldn't be offered on your cruise. Unless they are not offering it at all?

I am lucky enought to be going to a conference the beginning of May. An Alaska Cruise is on my bucket list. Just booked my very first cruise. It's perfect timing as my conference ends of the 5th so it will give us some time to take in Vancouver. We have an Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah. Since this is our first we can't book anything until Feb. 24th. I hope they are not full.
Any help is appreciated. This is such a reverse. Usually friends come to me when they are planning their first WDW trips since I go there so often.

Hi,
You can book Palo high tea, as long as it is offered, and that there's still seats available. If u are a 1st time DCL cruiser, u can book 75 days before the trip, i.e. at the same time when u are allow to book the excursions. You can also check availability again when you are onboard.
I didn't see high tea when I booked, but I managed to book brunch.

Jumping on board and introducing ourselves. I'm more of a lurker than a poster. Our cruising party includes myself, my DH, my DD11 and my DD7.
We booked the 5/10 cruise about a month ago. We're seasoned cruisers on other lines, but this will be our 2nd DCL cruise. Our 1st one was a not-so-Eastern/Tortola itinerary that ended up as a Western with a double dip to CC, thanks to a hurricane. Hopefully we won't have that problem with this cruise!
Is anyone else getting the feeling that this boat might be half empty? When we booked (about 100 days out), we were still able to get main seating for dining, and when I booked our excursions and Palo, everything was available that I wanted (a first) and I had my pick of the litter for Palo brunch/dinner/tea, although tea went fast. It looks like there are still plenty of cabins available. The staff to kid ratio in the kids club might be 1:1 at this rate, LOL!
Happy planning everyone!

Someone on the 5/3 inaugural Alaska cruise posted that DCL confirmed there is a pirate night (subject to change of course ;)). I guess we won't know for sure until we get on the boat!
I called DCL today to ask about themed nights for this cruise:
Day 2 - formal night
Day 5 - pirate night
Day 6 - semi formal

I didn't book a tea, just a brunch, but it was available at the 90 day booking window for a brief moment (at midnight).
The excursions are very expensive. :headache: We booked dog sledding in Skagway and whale watching in Juneau and I choked at the cost! I think we're going to sit back and relax in Ketchikan. Walk around town a little, shop, and enjoy the near empty boat. None of the Ketchikan excursions interest us.

We have had both dinner and brunch at Palo and we much prefer brunch. Brunch is kinda buffet style with an ordered entree but the buffet selections on Bahamian cruises include shrimp, crab legs, salmon, scallops, a YUMMY table of desserts, danishes and breakfast breads, exoctic cheeses, and.... There are both breakfast and lunch offerings as the entree. At dinner, the food was good but we didn't get to try as many things since it was a traditional soup, salad, entree, dessert.

There is High Tea. It was available for me to book at 12:01am at my 90 day booking window. I didn't book it (wasn't interested), but noticed it was gone by the time I completed my brunch Palo reservation.
Brunch booking options have been available (for me) on sea days, including the Tracy Arm day. Days 2, 3 & 7. I can't confirm for sure because I didn't inquire on tea, but I imagine reservations would fall on the same days. Hope that helps.

We booked the Yukon excursion in Skagway, and it is 8:15-4:15.
Alaska excursions are expensive, but you can also book most of the options in port. For example, when we were there in September, we went to the glacier in Juneau for under $20 for 4. We took a shuttle, spent an hour or so there, then came back to town. We also could have booked a whale watching excursion--same as the ship's excursion--for about half the price.
Ketchikan is a great town to tool around in--lots to see on foot or via trolley.
Now, if I can just get a Palo brunch reservation, I will be thrilled!!!

We'll spend some time in Seattle and then take the QuickShuttle to Vancouver on the 9th and take it back to SeaTac when the cruise is over on the 17th. The QuickShuttle was the easiest option for our family.
We considered renting a car, but a one way rental was far too expensive and a weekly rental combined with a week of parking was also more than we wanted to spend. We also considered Amtrak, but its schedule would only work if we spent another night in Vancouver - not an option for us.
Good luck with your decision!

Hi I am on the cruise after you and also taking the quick shuttle. If you join entertainment.com I think it is $30 for a year you can print out coupons for quick shuttle up to a week before your trip. Write your confermation number on the coupon and give it to the driver and they will give you 50% off two peoples trips (they refund your CC), hey thats more than enough for a meal at Palos.

I am trying to do the online check in and it's only the 2nd time we've had to fly in for a cruise (the 1st was the Med and DCL did our flights for us). For the flight arrival, it asks for all legs of your trip, but I notice on the departure that there is room for only 1 leg of the trip and we are changing planes on the way back. I'm assuming they just need to know your 1st flight's information for debarkation, but I wasn't sure. Does anyone know?

Booked ours through Dreams Unlimited. We called to verify that we could get extra luggage tags at the port. It's amazing how much extra stuff you need for Alaska vs the Bahamas.
27 more days till we start driving.

Has clothing been discussed? I'm at a loss as to what to wear. My first thought was just to layer and start with a long sleeve shirt then a sweatshirt and top of it with a jacket. But then I think they changed the ship to make us warmer... so is it going to be that cold? I live in Florida, we don't have winter clothing!!! Maybe some mittens!

Yes, it will most likely be cold in May. I would bring lots of layers and winter clothing. Also keep in kind that Alaska is a rain forest and we may see a lot of rain so bring your waterproof gear. I have been to northern Canada in the summer and it never got warmer then about 45 degrees F!

Hi All
We cruised on the Magic 3 years ago and we did fishextenders (look for more info on front page). My son is begging to do this again and I need to find some fellow cruisers that would like to do this!!! I hate to disappoint DS 9.
Basically you hang mail pockets on the fish outside your door and each family takes a day and delivers little goodies to each room. My kids always looked forward to coming back to the room and seeing what little gift was left. They had just as much fun when it was our turn to deliver our treats.
If you are interested send me a private message with your cabin number and who will be traveling with you and before the cruise and will make sure everyone gets the information privately as well.:cool1:

My main plan is long sleeve shirts under t shirts with either a fleece vest or fleece jacket (based on how cold it is) plus I bought a rain jacket. We live in florida as well (actually moved here from PA almost two years ago) so we gave up alot of our winter clothes. I am not that worried. I am more worried about being wet!!!

Hello everyone,
DH and I are joining you all and we can't wait. We are in our mid 20's and will be celebrating our 3rd anniversary the day we get off the ship. We will be in Vancouver for 3 nights before and at Disneyland for 4 nights after the cruise.

Yeah, this is definitely a quiet group. If it's any indication of our boat, it'll be the least populated cruise I've ever been on. No complaints from me! Looks like almost every category is still available to book.
We haven't started packing but we did meet with the gentleman who will be staying at our house while we're gone. Our big dog loves him, as does our elderly kitty so he'll be in good company.
We'll be cruising in four short weeks!

i thought the cruise would be empty too judging by these boards, but it seems like the cabins on this one are booking faster than the other May cruises. I can't be sure, but it just looks like there are fewer categories available. Maybe there are just a lot of non-dis people on it? :confused3

I have been skimming over this thread and while there appears to be a few kids going I don't see a "large" group. Wondering if this will be a quiet cruise as well. Would be nice if the kids could have some company as well in the clubs. Just hoping for a good time the whole family can enjoy.

I agree - I'm guessing the kids clubs won't be sailing at capacity. My DD11 will love it if the Edge is nice and quiet but my DD7 is very outgoing and enjoys making crowds of new friends. At least one of them will be happy, LOL, just not sure who!

On the DCL website it looks like the categories for the inside and oceanview rooms are no longer available right now, but they are offering discounts on verandahs. So I don't think it will be full, but some categories are filling. On our Med cruise last May our cruise meet was quiet, and the ship wasn't full, but there were still a lot of people... Just not very many from the DIS. Regardless, it should be an amazing time :goodvibes

I keep checking the DCL website and one day I'll see inside cabins available, the next day they're not, so keep checking and as an above poster said try early in the morning. The other thing I noticed (because we were watching the rates for a friend who thought about coming too) was that the inside rooms were always gone when I checked on weekends, but I would see them on weekdays. Granted this was about a month ago, so things may have changed.
Another option is that the restricted rates are now available on the verandah rooms, but that could be pricey if it's for just 1 person.
Keep checking and fingers crossed it opens up! :goodvibes

I am not so hopeful for an answer since this thread is so quiet - but no harm checking - anyone interested in whale watching boat trip in Juneau? This operator is rated #1 in Tripadvisor:

Cost is $149 per person, plus 5% sales tax.
$140.00 per person, plus 5% sales tax, for group of 6
They also make a courtesy stop at Mendehall Glacier, which is the #1 place to visit in Juneau.

We are booked for a whale watching and mendehall glacier excursion through DCL and can't wait! I feel safer going through Disney just in case the boat doesn't get back in time or something like that at least the cruise ship won't leave without us. I guess I am just a little paranoid because we went whale watching in Canada a few years ago and our boat got lost.

Thanks! That's good to know. 1 tour operator claimed they never had their guests missed their cruise. But yes when I was on the med cruise last year our (independent) bus to Mt Versuvius broke down as the driver was reckless and overheat the vehicle on the way up, driving too fast uphill. It took us a longer time to get back to town to visit Pompeii... And I haven't learnt my lesson!
Anyway, the tours on Disney seems marked up, but not as much as the ones compared to the European port adventures. And after calling a few operators they keep directly me back to Disney cruise for booking. Am running out of time now, so I'll just stick with Disney's port adventures then.

Making my first post. My friends and I will be traveling from Hawaii, and were wondering if a rain jacket was needed. Good to know we'd better pack that as well. We probably will be one of the most bundle bunch you will ever see, as we are used to 75+ weather. Most of us think we're freezing to death when the temperature drops in low 60's.
Looking forward to a new adventure. Can't wait to go on vacation.

Being from Florida, we're the same way! Usually we pick something tropical for vacation, but we've always wanted to see Alaska. It should be an amazing cruise! :goodvibes
I saw on the May 3rd cruise board that someone will be doing a live blog during their cruise and she was kind enough to share the link with me: http://www.carol-anne.ca/disney%20room.htm
A few people blogged live on the Med cruise before ours last May and it was really helpful, so I'm sure it will be a great read!
The past few cruises where I've been to a meet, it was pretty simple. Everyone just met in the promenade lounge at a certain time on the 1st or 2nd day. It was kind of fun running into eachother the rest of the cruise.

I have no experience too, but from what i gathered from other threads, there'll be a list of the rooms participating and the number / age of pple staying in the rooms. I am not sure what else is required from the host/hostess so better not commit myself to something I can't handle - will be on the road already next Friday - long long way to go for us to go from Asia...
If someone wants to host it, I'd like to participate. If this is any encouragement at all, I'll get something from Hong Kong Disneyland for the FE gifts.

It sounds like many people will be on their first disney cruise May 10 to Alaska. This will be my fifth Disney cruise but I have never done the fish exchange before. From what I have gathered we just need a list of people who are participating and state room #s. Everyone participating needs to make or buy a fish extender to hang outside your room and then everyone passes out their goodies throughout the cruise by leaving them in the pockets of the fish extender. Since my husband, James started this thread I would be more than happy to organize the fish exchange, just let me know if you want to participate, how many people, names, adult or child, and state room #.

My suggestion for those who want to do an FE thing is to do a secret pal exchange instead. Only because there just aren't that many people doing it. I usually participate in them but from the beginning this has been a small group and to really have fun with the FE's I think you need a few more people to do it. It's that running to your FE every time you go to your cabin that makes it exciting and you need people to sign up for that! Plus this was only just mentioned and it takes time planning for gifts.
So you could decide to do the exchange and maybe have a theme, I've done Christmas ornaments from your home town, candy from your home town, gifts from ports, there are tons of ideas! Not to rain on anyone's parade at all, so please don't take it that way, just a suggestion for those of you who want to add some fun to your cruise.

I've been trying to figure that out myself. While it's true that there are only veranda rooms left, there seem to be a *lot* of them left (and I think these are the most plentiful room type on the ship). We got bumped from an Ocean View to a veranda... I would have figured that because of all the veranda rooms left, that they'd upgrade more people to free up the lower cost rooms, but this doesn't seem to be the case...

Yeah we had booked on our last cruise almost 2 years ago for a ocean view and when I saw that the ship was pretty empty I was excited at the thought of a free upgrade but alas we were not that lucky :sad2: perhaps we can upgrade when we get there...still would have been very nice to get a free one. Ohwell vacation time is coming soon... and it is needed :thumbsup2

Today is your last chance to sign up for the fish exchange. The list of who is participating is on page one of this thread. Since it is a small group I am not setting a price limit or gifts per room limit but don't go crazy! Here is a link to some ideas on how to make your fish extender: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1219607&page=

Wife just went into fabric store and made a feeble attempt at describing the physical design of an FE...but she hadn't said what it was for at all.
The woman behind the counter said "are you making something to hang on a fish for an Alaska Cruise with Disney? I just had someone in here a little while ago building one of these."
We're in Illinois - was that any of you folks?

Not us, we are in California but that is pretty cool! I just made our fish extender last night. I think it came out pretty good for my first one. The Wonder is going to dock in San Francisco tomorrow which is 45 min from our house, so exciting. I might go over to say hi!

Just got home from SF, took the dogs to see The Wonder. It was a beautiful day and we had fun. Now I can't wait to get on board. If I can figure out how to post pics from my iPad I will put some up from today.

Hi!
This is our first Disney cruise and our first FE and I'm am trying to get our FE gifts organized. I was wondering how our FE is going to work... is each cabin going to be assigned a night to deliver gifts? Are we going to deliver one or two things an evening?
Thank you for the guidance!

I think for FEs most people just deliver them at your leisure at a time that works for you :goodvibes

Hi,
I was just going to keep it causual and have people deliver gifts whenever they want. Hopefully this works out and everyone doesn't deliver all at once!

So I'm (electronically) watching the Wonder pull out of SF this evening, then I come back later to find this...

The Wonder has left SF again and is on its way to Victoria, they had to drop someone off for a medical emergency. I hope they are OK. I enjoyed seeing The Wonder here in my home port but did not want to see it come back so soon for an emergency.

I haven't packed anything yet either. Mostly because our kids don't know about it so I have to be sneaky. Tonight I will iron and pack our hanging clothes. Tomorrow our carry on bags. The rest I will do the day before we leave and the morning of. We only live an hour from the port so we have more time than those who have to travel from a distance.
It's getting so close now!!!! :woohoo:

I have a special request from my DD for anyone cruising to Alaska soon. if you happen to meet an early 20ish blonde and bubbly member of the Cruise Staff named Katie from FL, will you please tell her Aspen from Alabama says hello? We were worried about her during everything that happened in LA and haven't been able to find a mailing address for the Vancouver Port yet to send her a note.
Thanks so much!

My only worry is the waves that they are reporting...that would suck if the kids get motion sickness.

I certainly have my bromine or whatever it's called for sea sickness. It looks like it's only on the way up to Alaska, but once in the bay it's fine. Knock on wood it's calmer for our cruise.
I'm sitting at the Airport in San Francisco waiting to head to Vancouver. Vacation for us has officially begun. Looking forward to distributing gifts for the FE!:woohoo:
