Michelle.....when you get the DCL page, before coming to the "meets" page. It was one of those posts, today, on the first page. I think it was called "cabo pool break"!!!
Lisa.... LOL. I was wondering why no one asked me that yesterday! I wanted to scream it, but was waiting for an invitaion to do so!!! Booked 10-A (inside stateroom) and got 7-A (Navigators Verandah)!!! I was sort of kind of (but not majorly) feeling bad about cruising alone with the kids, not being able to go out at night, not being able to check out the dessert buffet, etc. But now I have a Verandah to read and enjoy a drink on!!!
I am excited and I want it to be here now!!!
~Jennifer
Very awesome upgrade! :dance3:I loved the verandah in the early mornings when the family was still asleep...got to read and enjoy my coffee in quiet watching the sun rise...yup, I can't sleep in on vacations! :upsidedow

We're also doing the dolphin swim at 9:45 on Monday and would love to share the CD. How many people can share a CD? Can we get a whole bunch of us and get the price down to a couple bucks each???
When we did the zip tour in PV three of us shared the disc, the only trick was that they charged more for each disc. So, we just had one sent to us and that person (I think it was me) made copies for the other 2 in the group. But, we can work out the details when we get there I am sure! Yeah....more chances for pics for less $$!

To all you readers, this cruise might be a good excuse/justification to buy yourself a color Nook from Barnes n Noble and then you can share the books amongst your Nooks on the cruise. My mom just got one and is in love with it.:flower3:
I have the Kobo from Borders and LOVE IT:love: I went on the maiden dream and was able to bring (and read (remember I don't sleep on vacations!:lmao:)) 5 books! Would have never lugged that many on a cruise before, but it was perfect. Have some on there for the girls too, incase they finish their books early.

Thanks for the positive thoughts re. our upgrade! We are not selfish, and are willing to share with anyone and everyone! We didn't get KSF, so that might be why we were so lucky. Anyway....
Stop with the Kindle talk! It's not in my budget and now you're all making me want one!!!
So excited, so excited, so excited!!!

iPad 2 will be on sale March 11! Just in time for the cruise! :happytv:
Kel, I have an iPad and I love it, especially for the books and magazines (I'm a magazine junkie!)
I've got the iBooks as well as the Kindle apps and they're great. Saves lugging around tons of reading material. I still love the real deal, but this is brilliant for travelling.

Our 12 year old bought an iPad (and he lets us use it if we're good :rotfl: ). You can download the Kindle app on it too so you're not limited to just the Apple e-reader on the iPad.

Ummm, clearly you were not entertained enough on that voyage because I don't recall you reading much on the PC and I know for a fact we'll keep you way too busy to read on this one either (you know...martini tastings, wine tastings...) need I say more.

Congratulations to all with upgrades so far.
Jennifer: When I read what your upgrade was, I visualized a slot machine going crazy in Vegas. Cha Ching Ching Ching.... Kudos to you! Everyone knows I love to Gamble :cool2: Maybe you can spread some magic to Ann and I on the other side of the Caldecott Tunnel
For the rest of us who have not gotten upgrades, have no fear. I believe the possibility of upgrades still exists. There are still many verandah rooms available. With 45 days left to go, I doubt DCL will sell them all. I think (well...honestly I have no clue so I am guessing ) what happens next is that DCL waits for brief period of time to see if GTYs that have been assigned will look to upgrade. These will be standard upgrades so the cost to upgrade would be high but if they can get a few to bite, they would make better financial numbers.
At some point, they will probably call it a loss and attempt to fill the ship. They will probably begin to selectively upgrade folks. The goal at this point is to open/free up inside and oceanview staterooms because they have a better chance at selling these rooms as last minute deals. So hopefully with whatever selection process they use, some of us will get upgrades.
As of 10pm tonight, below is the list of verandah staterooms I can see still available. Lets hope there is still more pixie dust to come. :wizard:

Lisa, you are probably right, when will there be time to read? :drive: I know that fourmcds has a late-rising family so she has early a.m. time, but we usually can't stop ourselves from hitting every activity on the ship. We like to yank the kids from school to have family pool time, too.
Then back to the room before dinner for roll call, ha ha. Main seating.
Trivia is our fave, but I WONDER if it will vary from Disney trivia. I hope so. Dance classes, wine tasting like you said...all the fun!!
Hoppingmad and LiserAnn, iPads are so great...I learned all about the iPad 2 today...don't know if I can resist one now. The temptation is too great!:headache:
So...I am crossing my fingers that those of us that want to dance in the late night clubs can help each other stay up late enough to make it happen. :cool1: I have no option to sleep in (Jaz wakes up between 5-7am), but I can nap by the pool. :beach:

With 45 days left to go, I doubt DCL will sell them all.
And they only have room for adults, so you're probably 100% correct. I just tried doing a search as a new cruiser, 2 A - 2K and also tried 2A -1K and there was nothing available. Once I removed the kids all together there was availability. So I guess we have a full ship of kids but still have some room for adults. I have a feeling they're going to hold the upgrades for the port. From what I read they offer them at 50% from what you can get them now...so if it costs $1200 to go from a oceanview to a verandah today, then if you're lucky to snag it sailing day, they'll offer it for about $600. It'll be interesting to see how that goes.

Did I read these correctly? There will be opportunities to sign up to attend beer/tequila tastings. When and where are these happening? As a newbie to DCL this completely blows my image of sailing on a Disney boat. I know that getting beer and anything harder is virtually impossible at Disneyland (club 33 the exception). Virdis and I haven't done any social drinking out together since the kiddos were born. The idea of sharing a drink with Virdis and other adults sounds wonderful. :flower1:I can't wait.

Okay, I just got home from the gym and really need to hop in the shower before picking up Isabelle and friend from school (early release day) but I am so excited I needed to stop and share.
The wrist bands arrived today and they are so cute :cool1::cool1::cool1:
Here are the pictures. Please excuse my paperclips. I could not get a good photo of the wording, so I had to squish them down. Paperclips were the only idea I could come up with in a hurry.

I have 200 bands, so there are plenty of extras for those who did not order initially. They come in Adult & youth.
Payment
They are $1 a band. You can pay me via paypal kh at kristihoward.com (no spaces and the @ sign of course--make sure you put that it is a personal transaction for payment owed, so I do not get charged a fee)
Or you can mail me money, just PM me for my address, or you can give me cash on the ship. Any way I am fine.
I calculated the shipping with my postal scale if you would like me to mail them to you. .85 cents for shipping. If you want them shipped, add the .85cents to your total and get me your address.
Or I can get you your bands at the port or on the ship.
Super excited. These came so fast. Now I have to make a short video to get $10 reimbursed.

The bands are great, I'll get onto PayPal and get it moving. My husband kinda ruined it for me, though. I showed him our site and graphics and now the wristbands and his response was, "shouldn't it be 9 hot nights in Mexico? We cruise for 9 nights and 10 days." Ugh. He's right, but it still wasn't the reaction I was hoping for. :guilty:

Virdis, can't believe you took the time to find all those rooms... I would do the exact same thing but am superstitious and felt I'd be jinxing myself. I'm better off hoping for nothing/expecting the absolute, rock bottom WORST then being eternally grateful to God and those that made things actually BETTER!!! This cruise is high up there on the grateful list... lemme tell ya!! And so are you DISers!!!:worship:
Yeah...I thought about what if they check the logs but, I don't think they check to see who is checking. As a systems engineer, I know only look at log files when something goes wrong. Fortunately, I am not tooo superstitious (salt over my shoulder).
We too are very grateful for this cruise. I was very much against it at first but Ann-Marie eventually wore me down to book it. Thanks honey.
Virdis, you got my heart racing after reading your posts about all the available Veranda rooms. So there's a chance they'll let me out of the dungeon? Although I have some great neighbors down there. We might just have to have our own party on deck 2.
Its not so bad on deck 2. We had room their as well as on deck 1 before we moved up to deck 7. Actually, I wanted our room on deck 1 (with the two portholes) because deck 1 is supposedly quiet most of the time. I also heard on the disboards that it is the deck you board returning from excursions. While the rest of us are waiting for elevators, you are already in your room. :)
The reason for our final move to the 7th deck was do to a mistake I made. I am sure Ann-Marie is going to love telling that story ;)

Kel, you almost gave me a heart attack. I was totally stressing that I was going to spell something wrong, I kept rereading it over and over before I submitted the order. I did not want to screw up 200 wrist bands. Now that I see it, I probably should have had a comma after Disney Wonder and before the date. Oh well. At least I spelled everything correctly. I has also wanted a mickey head with a sombrero, but I could not find a good one and time was ticking away.

Got it. If I have an extra adult, I will switch that out for Lachlan. The youths are smaller than I thought. I can wear it, but I need to stretch it to get around my hand. Once on it is fine.

The bands are perfect! No corrections needed. I'm the same way with things like that, like I felt when I ordered my FE, "did I spell it wrong???" U ROCK :woohoo:

Yeah...I thought about what if they check the logs but, I don't think they check to see who is checking. As a systems engineer, I know only look at log files when something goes wrong. Fortunately, I am not tooo superstitious (salt over my shoulder).
We too are very grateful for this cruise. I was very much against it at first but Ann-Marie eventually wore me down to book it. Thanks honey.
Krisit....this look GREAT!!!! Ann-Marie will sync up on payment. Thank you soooooo much.
Actually, he is wrong. You can have the joy in telling him (oh...I just love it when Ann-Marie points out things when I am wrong).

They are usually a mixed "foo foo" drink and yes they are sold all day at a lower price. I usually have at least 1 of those a day just to try them.

On Connie's super website for our cruise, http://april-17-2011-mexicanriviera.weebly.com/navigators.html she has a tab for Navigators from past cruises. The Navigator is the daily activity calendar you get in your cabin each night for the next day and it lists the drink of the day. On past cruises they cost $5-6 instead of $8-9 and are pretty yummy. Sometimes in souvi cups, but not sure for DCL. pirate:

whew - I don't read for 24 hours and had 2 pages to catch up on....
I have a few suggestions for everyone (assuming that folks are new to DCL here...if not, please don't be offended at my suggestions!)
Take a highlighter or two. One color for each person.
The navigator is delivered to your cabin at around 10pm each night, I usually read it over cover to cover at that point and hightlight everything I want to do - then in the morning over b'fast I make my final decisions about what I want to do when...extra copies can be obtained at guest relations after 11pm.
In regards to the tastings....I have attended: martini, margarita, wine, champagne, port, taquila (spelling?), and others...they cost between 10 and 40 dollars each (depending on what the tasting is for..I did a reserva tasting that was the 40 dollar one). I also didn't see any on the Dream Maiden - seemed like a lot of things were missing. I also seem to recall reading about a coffee tasting one cruise - but I don't like the taste so I skipped over it completely!
Some family fun to consider is Bingo - always a blast!
There are always tours also - if you have the opprotunity to take the galley tour, stage tour, or the art of the ship tour...do it! They are all amazing and really interesting!
I also recommend doing dinner up in Beach Blanket (I think that is the name of the restaurant on the Wonder...I get them mixed up!) one night - where the b'fast and lunch buffets are served does a sit down dinner - no appointment or assigned time...post excursion - a nice change!
Remember to pack....pirate clothing, jammies for character b'fast, a real blow dryer - the one on the ship doesn't allow for styling at all, some type of outlet extender (I use a heavy duty three 'fer from Home Depot) there are outlets behind the TV that are not used...so a power block provides power for all the camera/phone/e-reader chargers! Oh - and an alarm clock of some type...there isn't one in the cabin at all.
And last but never least - pack a corkscrew if you are bringing bottled wine on with you...you can't buy one onboard, and they charge a 25 or 30 dollar corkage fee...you CAN NOT bring your bottle to dinner...so you can ask your steward for wine glasses in the room each day - or you can buy a big "glass" of some sort and take it to dinner with you. I usually ask the steward and take two "very heavy" pours of wine to dinner with me...most of a bottle.
Ok - enough babble from me...I am looking forward to meeting lots of new friends on this cruise!

Now I have to make a short video to get $10 reimbursed.Thank you so much for doing this...they look awesome! I will definitely do paypal in the am.

It seems like this group is really getting fired up, so I thought this would be a good time to unveil my new avatar (and my cruise "alter ego")...I've been jealous of Virdis' for a while now. :cool2:
I was starting to "WONDER" if anyone was ever going to bring up the tastings! :drinking1 If you've never been (or you have, but your memory got a little "foggy" perhaps), they really are a lot of fun. Basically 4 drinks in about 45 minutes for about $15, with a little "education" thrown in if you're feeling guilty about drinking for drinking's sake (like that's ever a problem).
party:
And Kristi, I think we had Apple and Chocolate martinis on one of our tastings so there is a little "fruity foo foo" and "dessert" for you. They are typically held in the afternoon on most sea days and you do need tickets (buy them early at Guest Services...sounds like many of you already know this and will be racing me to the counter). I think I saw in the recent Navigators they even had two in one day (wine and martinis)...talk about your "Double Trouble"!
I"d like to "second" Cayla's comments about ship tours, etc. We did the stage tour (adults only) on the Magic and it was very interesting (and free, by the way). We've never done the galley tour, but hope to this time. Does anyone have any more info on this one? Also, Cayla is also "spot-on" regarding the wine for dinner as well. We've done the same thing and the only problem I see is how to get enough on board for a 10-night cruise! I guess the kids' carry-ons are going to get a little heavy (lol). Cayla...what's your secret on this?
Can't wait to meet everyone!
P.S. Awesome wristbands!

Virdis,
How do you find what rooms are still available on the DCL website for our cruise? I'd like to take a look for "future" prospective cruises.
Thank you,
Deserie
Hi Deserie,
I am afraid that information is TOP SECRET....:rotfl:
Just kidding......we booked this cruise through DCL on their website. If you do this, you are given login information that allows you to change almost anything with your reservation through the DCL website.
To get the list I logged in and retrieved our reservation. Then I modified my reservation to change rooms. You can change categories and see the cabins that are available within each category. Its time consuming but you can "window shop" the rooms that are available. I usually have another tab in my browser to look at stateroom reports as I am browsing.
To get a more complete list, I deleted one of my kids off the reservation temporarily. Since we are a family of 4, I would only see cabins that can fit 4 but I wanted to see all cabins and some cabins only can only fit 3.
I can do this as much as I want. All you have to do is remember not to commit the change of cabin before you log off. They give you all kinds of warnings before you commit so making a mistake is kind of hard to do.
The inventory for cabins constantly changes. So if I did the same search now, I am sure the list will be slightly different (some cabins gone and some others appear).
I REALLY like this ability. I know most people love booking through a TA to get a large on board credit but, I like having this type of control. Our on board credit is only $25 but, I can change everything at will. We have moved rooms several times. To me, that is worth the loss in on board credit. Anyway, that is how I got the list. :thumbsup2

03-04-2011, 12:16 AM
Susiesark, I did get that email. I'm packin bunny goods on my own, with collapsible baskets.
Penny, Some of my fave things to bring are: extra clothes line w/suction cups(because moving the bathing suits in and out of the shower gets old, plus we need more room), soft binder to keep Navigators or keepsakes so they don't get lost in the drawers, hanging shoe organizer which we actually use for shoes so I don't have to shoe-dive before leaving the cabin, and a pop up hamper or two for dirty clothes or toys/blankies, super suction cup hooks to hang my toiletry bag from wherever I want, or use as a purse hook, 2 bathing suits so you don't have to put on a wet one, all the meds you might think you need +thermometer for kids, and I might bring along a clear organizer to hang from one of my suction hooks to avoid a bunch of "stuff" on the desk top. We bring a laptop to load our photos onto pretty frequently to have a backup of them, + extra memory cards.
That's all I can think of right now, except I need to remember workout clothes and shoes along with dress up and beach, etc. Hats, and all that Jaz.

This might be a silly question, but where do the kids eat on the night we go to Palo?
mommafox
03-04-2011, 12:55 AM
Penny, Ah Palo, I can't wait!!! We have a late night res. for 8:30 the last night so we'll probably take the girls to early dinner and then eat ours later in Palo. You can take your kids to any of the 24/7 places or to the buffet before or after your reservation. Or room service is handy for times like that, too.
Our 9-year anniversary is on 4/30 so this is the closest to an anniversary date as we can get!! :charac2:
We do a lot of breakfast room service because sometimes the stress of going "public" isn't as relaxing as being handed breakfast in your jammies and having the kids eat while watching morning cartoons. That is usually my time to organize things.
HoppingMad
03-04-2011, 01:02 AM
Kel - I love the sound of room service! I have a feeling the kids will love doing that while we get all spiffy for our 'night out'! I could only get night 2 for our res, which happens to be formal night, but oh well.
Lovely to be able to have an early anniversary dinner alone on a cruise I'm sure it will be very special.

Cayla...what's your secret on this?
I have been lucky enough to have an engine room tour as well...that was AWESOME!!! Very loud...but amazing! The galley tour is usually only offered on longer cruises...so you should be in luck. Going "back stage" is very interesting, the ship really is a small city. At the end of the tour you get a fresh baked cookie (yumm). I have a photo somewhere of the soup pots...they each (there are 4 or 6 I don't recall) hold 2500 gal of soup :scared1::scared1:..big enough for a bath...I (of course) got the immeidate visual of Bugs Bunny being made into soup (remember that cartoon?) it was hard not to laugh at the poor officer giving the tour because of the visual image in my head (I whispered it to my traveling companion and she also was trying not to laugh!)
as far as carrying on wine...I do not need to use a large carryon bag to fly, so I pack a rolling one that is max size inside my checked bag if I have weight space, if not...I take a very empty carryon. Then I repack everything) using the expansion area of the checkd bag to put everything I can in that bag. Then I have a rolling bag to carry on...and I have a VERY heavy carryon bag! I have taken as many as 23 bottles onboard with me...always in Florida...I have some concerns about the TSA guys in Calif...not sure they will understand as well as the very kind folks in FL. Rule is - you HAVE to carry it on...DO NOT PUT IN CHECKED/PORTERED BAGS. They will confiscate it. DO put your wine key in the checked bags..the knife will trip the TSA alert thingys.
Also - you can buy wine or liquor in port as well...When I did the Baltic I was trying to buy a bottle in each port to drink that night at dinner...worked out pretty well! I carried on 14 bottles of hard cider in Dover that were in small cask shaped bottles...perfect for the Pirate party (which was VERY cold I might add!)
Great tips Kel - thanks :thumbsup2 I've noticed lots of recommendations for the shoe organizers - the line for the togs is a great one - better make a list of things to get at Walmart when we get to LA!
This might be a silly question, but where do the kids eat on the night we go to Palo?
Shoe organizers are great for all the small things that tend to collect in the cabin.
Kids can eat at the regular table (depending on the age of course) and the servers will help them out! I have seen (on one cruise a few years back) 2 teenage kids that ate alone every dinner...the parents showed up the first night to get them set...we never saw the parents again! The kids were at a table by themselves so the staff shifted them to another table that had other teenagers...worked out well. I finally couldn't stand it anymore and had to ask why they ate alone every night...some medical issue and the parents had to eat in the cabin. I have seen kids as young as 4 eating without parents in the dining rooms...so you will be able to get your kids fed!
Ditto to that!
Helen, I was going to ask the same question if this group wants to set up our own tasting. I'm not sure if someone with a concierge room has to initiate the request though. I know Rob who organized it on the med cruise has a Cat 3 room.
I don't think it has to be conceirge - I have been to private tastings hosted by folks on deck 2...but I have to second the person who said there is already a lot to do. I think someone would have to set it up through DCL - check with the champagne girls host - she is doing that type of thing.
For those who are looking for the "how to pack" answer...PM me...I can pack for 6 weeks in one checked bag and one carry on...all within weight limits (very very close to 50 & 23 pounds ) I am willing to share my secrets and packing lists to those who are interested.

Helen, I was going to ask the same question if this group wants to set up our own tasting. I'm not sure if someone with a concierge room has to initiate the request though. I know Rob who organized it on the med cruise has a Cat 3 roomOHHHH we would be all over that too

Hi Michelle, I have plenty of extra youths. More youth than adult actually. I guess I have an "average" size wrist, it fits me fine but I have to stretch it around my hand. I got your payment, thanks. PM me your mailing address when you get a chance and I will get yours mailed out tomorrow.Ah, I forgot to give you my address. I will pm you now, thanks!

Something that I just learned: not all rooms can accommodate 4 people. Well, I already knew this but had forgotten. Apparently dh did not remember the room category I booked and had me change it to a verandah room last night. According to the DCL site there were several rooms available however, only ONE would accommodate four people, the others only sleep 3. So maybe this is the reason who DCL did not upgrade more families with 4 to verandah rooms?:confused3

Me too! (meaning some kind of liquor tasting)
Why don't we all just call DCL, tell them we're together, ask for the Walt Disney Suite, and camp out together? I saw a tour of the Roy Disney suite (well done, I might add) on Youtube... looks spacious. I bet the Walt Disney one is even bigger! We'd be whooping it up all night... would need another cabin for the kids to sleep in though... adjoining cat 2?!?! could you imagine?
DH would be booking the "rasul" every day!!! (if you know what I mean)
party:
LOL sounds like LOTS of us are on deck 2 we could all just bring our own and take over the deck and have our own tastingsssssssssss heehee :rotfl::rockband:party:

Hey Michelle,
Yes...that is a big reason. That is why when I "window shopped" to get the list the other night, I temporarily deleted my son off the reservation to get a more complete list. It is also the reason I don't believe we (Ann-Marie and I) will not be upgraded because when you take in account that the number of rooms can only support 3 people, our upgrade possibilities diminish somewhat.
I while back, I did find a site that lists the room capacities. Unfortunately, it looks like DisBoards forum is blocking me from listing the URL. I will PM you the URLs. Hopefully it will help you. -Virdis

Michelle....I think there may be truth to your hypothesis...The room we got upgraged to is a room for three. Hate to say it, but I'm happy my 19 year old decided not to join us this time!!!
The Walt suite and Roy Suites are the same size. They are huge!!! Plenty of room for campers, stowaways, what-have-you!!!

we used this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBtNwx1bhCE
if it doesn't work go to youtube, and look for tye dyed mickey its the one with the 5 year old in it.
we used a washable marker to trace, don't used coloured dental floss and it has to be waxed, we used zip ties instead of elastics and we used the snake one we tried the twisted one like a cookie but they sucked we also wrapped the ends of the detal floss around the puffed mickey head, we used tulip dye in the squeeze bottles that is the only squeeze bottle type we could get here, we soaked in soda ash after we had them all wrapped in the eleastics/zipties, and let them sit in colour for 48 hours
DS did one with a light green t-shirt to start and dark green dye but it didn't show up well at all so we put the mickey head back on the shirt and misted it with bleach and left it for about 30 seconds and rinsed it out right away, it looked really cool

WHAT! Are you leaving the dungeon? Who am I gonna party with?
(Between us, what was the cost to upgrade?)Well, we did upgrade to a 5C but I'm not thrilled with the room location so we are working on that. You and Lisa can come up and share the verandah.
These are the prices that my TA gave us to choose from yesterday:
DCL is advising that currently they have the following staterooms avaiable to upgrade to
category 6A - in guarantee and the total price would be 4,837.72
category 5C - the total price would be 5,075.32
category 5B - the total price would be 5,183.32
category 5A - the total price would be 5,399.32
category 4E - in guarantee and the total price would be 5,874.52
category 4B - the total price would be 6,004.12
category 4A - the total price would be 6,241.72
All of the above prices are just quotes and pricing would be based on availability upon upgrading
All we did was take the new price, subtract what we already paid (for the 9C) and the difference was the amount due. So not too bad. We paid just a little over $1200 for a 5C, just trying to get a good room location that sleeps 4.

Thank you for taking care of this for all of us!!! Paypal is in the works.
I sent PM. :)

Hi Deserie,
I am afraid that information is TOP SECRET....:rotfl:
:thumbsup2
Thank you Cayla....great suggestions!!! Please share with us if you think of more things. This is our first DCL cruise so we are very interested in preparing for everything.
Thank you Virdis for the information. Darn!! I booked through a TA, so I guess there is "no window" shopping for me!

East Coast family here too. Give me pointers if you've done xcountry travel with your kids before!
The last time we took the girls to CA was when they were 2 and 3 years old. We flew Jet Blue, and between the snacks and TV onboard they were pretty happy. We also brought their carseats and strapped them in onboard, which made them feel more like it was a car ride. We're flying Jet Blue again--we use them whenever possible.

All FE Participants,
The lists are complete and by now you should have received a PM from me with the link to the lists. If you did not receive it or have corrections, please let me know.
Remember to hold onto that link and print before you head to the ship. If there are port upgrades, I will give out my cell number so you can text or call me. I will then announce the changes at the first DIS Meet. If you are not there, I will call or text your Wave phone the changes.
I did assign delivery days, with the total understanding that it is okay if you cannot make your day. This is going to be a fun and relaxing cruise. Please don't stress out if you cannot make your day. Just deliver when you can.
Anyone who is joining the meet now, I can add you to a new FE list if you are interested. All new participants will go on that list.

Hope everyone has a great weekend. Is it 6 weeks to go now??? Thanks for all the work you put in for the FE list. I'm starting to compile my goodies now, although there is a bit of a challenge when ages range from babies and toddlers to teens and young adults. Found this great link, with step by step instructions, for anyone crazy enough (I'm talking about myself) to try to sew their own FE. http://www.scrappingthemagic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2739

Yes, thanks True Romance for the work on the FE list too. I looked at this website, Susiesark, and it made me laugh. I bought a sewing machine with full intention of making my FE. HA! It's never been plugged in. I don't even know how to thread it. So this is what I'll tell everyone who comes to our door.... don't be surprised if there's a bag hanging there!!! I'll try to find one more attractive than a Target or Walmart type bag, but it may just be the bag from the last minute trip to the liquor store, on the way to the port! Real classy huh?!?! I'll think of something! Here's an idea that is a notch above the plastic shopping bag: I was at Michael's this week and saw a set of 3 small fabric bags, about 4x5 or 5x6, for just a few dollars. You can easily hand stitch or even glue them onto something to create pockets. You can use fabric markers or paint, shoot even Sharpies, to personalize them. They come in a variety of colors. I'm sure you can make a really cute, and inexpensive, FE. Another idea is to use those shoe organizers that have big pockets. I got my 24 pocket shoe organizer at Walmart yesterday for under $6.

I can be such extremes... shopping for the ultimate Manolo Blahnik shoes for a photo shoot, yet I walk around the house with a tee shirt on that I wipe DD's boogers with... she even walks up to me and wipes her nose on my shirt now!! Don't quote this text... I plan on erasing it!!! We've all been there. I even get it from work.
Lots of picking and eating boogers in my class. :headache:

On our 08 PC cruise thread...there would be 20-30 pages per day:scared1: If you didn't log in every few hours you were days behind!
[QUOTE=loving _life;40196882]thanks, great ideas... looks like a trip to Michael's is in the works... or I could cut off a few levels of my "over-the door-shoe-organizer" and hang that out there... again, may be too cheesy! Can you just picture it?... this delapidated, hacked up shoe organizer sticking out into the hall for all to view?!?!
[QUOTE]
On the last cruise...some people just put out decorated shopping bags (the cloth kinds)....so anything that will hold stuff will work! The other thing Dh and I noticed on the dream....one side of the ship had fish on the doors and the other had seahorses....(we had a seahorse)...is that the case with the magic and the wonder too (and I have been oblivious for years?)...or is this something new?

You're welcome everyone. I enjoy doing spreadsheets and organizing. Try to keep my brain active since I stay home with my kids.
I bought my FE from Etsy from a fellow DIS member. I got 4 pockets and I think I paid $35 and that was including shipping. I got to pick all the characters and embroidery. She had a ton to choose from. StitchesnBows is the seller. Here is a photo of ours, I let the kids pick their own character.

I found mine on ebay...just got it actually here is a link to the closed auction - but they have more from this seller and others:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140462099138&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
If you have an AC Moore near you - they sell the cloth bags as well - and in the iron on section they have all kinds of Disney images. But, if you want to involve the kids - have each kid do a bag (this includes the BIG kids of course!) by drawing on them, using the foam cut out stuff, stickers etc...and then use zip ties to tie one handle to the next - and make them hang in a column - I saw this on the Dream...worked well!
On the Dream the fish are on one side of the ship, sea horses on the other and the star fish are concierge. The Magic and Wonder have fish on both sides. I think the fish are port, but I am not sure...

iPad 2 will be on sale March 11! Just in time for the cruise! I usually enjoy the ability to close my eyes if given the chance on vacation, and limit my screen time since I am probably 75 % of my day in front of some sort of screen.:happytv:
I'm really considering an e reader so I don't have to carry several books on board. Does anyone know if the ipad 2 addressed the sun glare problem?:confused3
We love our apple lap top but have hesitated to purchase an ipad because I would use it outside and sun glare would be a problem.

RE: Fish Extenders
We were on the cruise that started the whole Fish Extender craze... thank you Debbie! :thumbsup2
I know I still have my original Fish Extender somewhere. It's just like the one Cayla posted, except it's a Mickey Mouse design instead of Pooh Bear. I guess I better start searching for it.
RE: e-readers
I'm having a bit of a hard time adjusting to the idea of electronic books. I love to go to the book store and pick up every edition of a book I'm looking for, and I'm such a doofus I will actually pay more for the one that feels best in my hands. :rolleyes1
But I can see how e-readers make a lot of sense too. DH & I have an anniversary coming up this month. So should I start dropping Kindle hints, or should I just get one for DH... and then load it up with my books so I can try it out on the cruise? ;)
FWIW, I've read that while the resolution on the IPad2 will remain the same, it will have a brighter screen with anti-reflection properties. I don't know if that's been officially verified, or if it's just speculation though. But it will definitely still be an LCD screen, so I would think you would still have some daytime glossiness and nighttime glow issues if you use it to do a lot of reading.

I have an ipad and a Nook (the original, e-ink kind). I use the Nook for reading, and I bought it specifically to take on trips so I didn't have to carry so many separate books. I have to say, I am always forgetting to charge it, and then get frustrated that my book is out of power. That's definitely not something you need to worry about with regular books! I don't use my ipad for reading, I use it for internet browsing and email, and I bought the 3G version and use it instead of a laptop on vacations. I used it last time we went to DW--I was able to dump the photos from my camera to the ipad and upload to Facebook with the camera add-on kit, as well as keep up on my emails. It probably won't work on the cruise, as I don't imagine there is AT&T coverage at sea or even in Mexico. So I guess my advice would be to go with an e-reader if you just want it for reading, as they are much cheaper and you won't be able to use most of the other capabilities on the cruise anyway.

I've seen a pic of the beverages that are carbonated (Coca cola products, including Hi-C) and read too that milk and juices are available, but not in that same grouping where the carbonated drinks are supplied. I don't know what kind of juices but the milk was said to be whole milk. I'm sure they go through a lot of it with a kid-friendly theme onboard. There's also a youtube video on how to use it to make a milkshake (blenderless)... so all the ingredients for a chocolate milkshake are there too. I just know I'm gaining weight this trip!
Hey, Minicoops, I sent you a PM!
Soda, milk, coffee, and hot water/tea are all in the same area on deck 9. You can get juices in Beach Blanket Buffet.

Yes, it would be a private tasting just for our Disboard group. Someone organized a wine tasting for the Disboard members on Connie's and I's Med cruise last May and it was great. It was a large group I think around 30 people. It was a lot of fun!

Yes, it would be a private tasting just for our Disboard group. Someone organized a wine tasting for the Disboard members on Connie's and I's Med cruise last May and it was great. It was a large group I think around 30 people. It was a lot of fun!
Oh my gosh, that sounds like fun. I like wine, and I'm new to martinis, but I do like. DH likes wine and beer (possibly martinis). We'll all be staggering back to our staterooms.
And I must say, as much as I am TOTALLY looking forward to this cruise, I will be said when it comes to an end, as I will miss all the lovely friends here, and our daily 'chats' . :grouphug:

Sheila, I would love to hear the story of the FE. How long ago was this?
Hey Kristi,
It was on the Westbound Panama Canal cruise back in 2005. The cruise sold out within a few days of booking opening, so we had a long time to get to know each other on the meet thread.
The FE didn't come about until just before the cruise though. A Dis-er found stacks of Mickey Mouse hanging organizers at her local dollar store. She offered to pick one up for anyone who was interested. Umm, pretty much everyone who had been posting, in fact I think that even enticed a couple of lurkers out into the open. ;)
IIRC I don't think we even had an official FE sign-up, but we did have a special Dis board navigator for our cruise with everyone's cabin number listed and a lot of folks were planning on doing little gifts, or they were involved with groups that were doing gifts. So we came back with tons of goodies anyway and the Mickey organizers worked perfectly.
There was quite a bit of discussion between the Westbound and Eastbound PC cruises, and since they had more time, I'm pretty sure they took the FE idea and did a more organized exchange. Then I think it all just took off from there. :thumbsup2
I'm really slacking this cruise. I have no idea what I'm doing for the FE exchange yet. I guess I better come up with something soon though... it's coming quickly!

Yes we celebrate Easter.
As for the e-readers or the ipad. I am an optometrist so have some experience with patient complaints of fatigued eyes :confused3. I would say the e-reader is much better for reading. It is not back lit, it is made with technology called e-ink, which therefore doesn't cause the eyes to overaccomodate. The ipad as with other computer screens screens are typically higher-contrast, brighter, flicker and reflect glare more - all of which are potential sources of eyestrain, headaches, and fatigue. That being said. The ipad is pretty awesome! I'm trying not to play with one- since I love gadgets, bad for the pocketbook :lmao:

Forgot to ask....
This is my first cruise ever. I get motion sick in the car all the time, so I figure I will be prone to sea sickness.
I have gotten the patch from the M.D. I have also bought the bonine. What is your guys experience. Should I take the bonine 24 hrs before and hope that works well... if not add the patch? Or should I go full throttle and use the patch? I am scared to use the patch, because of the side effects- dry mouth, dilated eyes, I CANT drink!
Also, what about the kiddos? Do they get sea sick at all? My pedi told us to give them benadryl if needed. Did anyone have to do this?
Thanks!

Sorry we don't get sea sick...but for JoJo's first cruise I took children's bonine and candied ginger just incase. Ginger ale is suppose to help some people too. On that same cruise our friend (her first cruise) gets motion sickness use the wristband and never had to use anything else. She was able to drink with the wrist bands. :thumbsup2 HTH

I tend to get motion sick but I only felt sick on a DCL cruise once...12-15 foot swells, in the jacuzzi...took one sip of an adult libation. I looked at my friends (fourmcds) and hubby and said, uh oh, I'm outta here. I ended up in the cabin for 4 hours. I really think it was because the ship was going one way and I was in a different body of water that was going the opposite direction of the ship.
I've used the patch and hated it. I prefer bonine but again I've never had to take it on a Disney cruise. My kids have each used bonine and it works great for them.

Lymommy, I'm hitting my 8th cruise this time around and I've been on some gnarly swells, one hurricane almost ruined our stop in Bermuda! Anyhoo, my cure? It's STAY OUT OF THE ROOM. Yup, I would suggest going dancing or keeping near some fresh air, but in the room it's like all you think about is the feeling of rocking and rolling. On the dance floor you just wobble the electric slide in the direction of the rolling, and it's pretty fun! The kids like to hit the "wave" pool when it's rocky like that. :yay:
Hopefully you are in a middle and/or lower cabin because that can help when you're ready for bed. I can get car sick, and boat sick (Catalina Ca. boats can really rock!) but rarely get ship sick. Sometimes I feel it when lying in bed (insomnia) and I picture myself being rocked to sleep by a giant mom (LOL).
I see people with patches and pressure wrist bands (I tried when I was deathly preggers...didn't help me), and they swear by them, but are never without so who knows if it is working. Ginger, granny smith apples, keep your eye on the horizon, Dramamine, Benadryl (both of which slow down your body to trick it into not caring about the motion, unless you are like me and my kids and it can hype you up with the antihistamines), and I actually have a prescription for something right now from a stint with strep throat, and it made me sleepy and worked.
Oh, my girls never get sick (knock on wood), this will be their 4th cruise, ages 4 and 7. Syd gets car sick, but not ship sick. A little boat sick on Alaska whale watching boat, but we took her out in the air to look at a stable horizon and she was good.

Here you go Susan found this today.... It was on the main threads
"DIVERSIONS!! We spent many evenings down there, until about 11:30 playing yahtzee and having a quiet drink. It is almost always nearly deserted in there... so a nice place to relax after a busy day.
During the day the kids can come with you and there are board games you can use. Our girls loved Jenga and yahtzee and Princess Chutes and Ladders. If you have late seating for dinner, this is a good place to come get snacks before your show. Around 5:00 they put out wings, tortilla chips with salsa, sour cream and some other toppings, fresh veggies and I think there were always hotdogs too.
If you are a sports fan they always have some kind of game on TV."

I can get motion sick just watching a movie. On our previous cruise, my son and I took Bonine each day - just in case. We were NEVER sick at all. I don't know whether we would have been without the Bonine, but I didn't want to take the chance.
I suggest trying out the patch BEFORE the cruise if you think you might use it. When I tried it I was so excited :woohoo:I was sure it would be the answer for me. Within an hour after sticking it on (while still on dry land) I started experiencing side effects. The dilated eyes and dry mouth would have been bearable if I still hadn't felt so nauseas!

Both my boys suffer from motion sickness - cars/planes/boats - you name it. I was really worried on our first cruise but they actually faired pretty well. I think all the distractions really helped. I think Mommafox has the right of it. Try and keep yourself busy - go dancing. None the less, I did give my boys dramamine the first night. It made them sleepy but much better alternative to having them sick.

So I don't know if this means anything but I can not change rooms to anything on our cruise right now. The DCL site is now showing no rooms available for the first time (at least that I've seen it). So I am wondering if they are about to start shuffling folks around. I am really surprise to see this because I usually can move to a bunch of choices on Decks 7 and 8. But now nothing shows open. I doubt all of those cabins got taken in the last 24 hours.
Researching this, I've heard that this usually happens when DCL is assigning GTY folks as they want to lock anyone from making changes or any new reservations, but it looks like they have already finished GTY assignments. So my only guess (and of course I can not base this on anything) is that they are locking all changes so that they can make changes themselves. But who knows. There seems to be no logic in what happens. Man, I am stressing out and this is only my first DCL cruise!!!!!! :rotfl:

Leeanna, I get motion sick too, car & sea. I did get horribly sick my first cruise when I was 12 and then several whale watching and Catalina type boats. I take 24 hour less drowsy formula Dramamine. I take it once a night, starting the night before the cruise. I have never had side effects or have gotten sick. I figure if I get drowsy, I am going to bed shortly anyway. for the kids I have given them Boninie for Kids. I am not sure if they even get sea sick, but I thought better be safe them sorry. I gave my 4 1/2 year old 1/2 tablet twice a day and my 6 year old I gave her a full tablet. Since I have never seen my kids get motion sick, I might start out giving them the Bonine for a day or so and then stop.

With the beginning of March we are swallowed up by activities. We have swim team practice or baseball every night of the week. Then a ton of Girl Scout activities thrown in for good measure. I really am going to need this trip in 5 1/2 weeks to get a break from it all.
Yeah BINGO!!! I have never played in town, it's a cruise vise. :rolleyes1
It's is always fun to see people changing right before sober eyes. :thumbsup2

Ahhh, yes, that was a classic day....you needing to go lay down and scott body surfing in the adult pool as Nan, Paul and I held on to our drinks!:goodvibes
but, for seasickness...there are the ear patches (scopolamine) that you can get ahead of time if you are worried....they don't seem to cause the fatigue that the bonine/dramamine etc causes. I think they can be worn for 3 days at a time. And, if i remember correctly, in front of the health clinic, they have a basket full of seasickness pills if you get in trouble and didn't bring anything (that was what we found on our cruise in 05, but have not checked it out since then....anyone else know?)
Yeah BINGO!!! I have never played in town, it's a cruise vise. :rolleyes1

:rotfl:
Anyway, I am hoping that something is about to happen. Oh please, please, please.....Pixie Dust for somebody here!!!!! pixiedust:Hm...I think you may be right, something is going on. But today I am seeing rooms available that have not been available. We upgraded last week but got the last room available in our category and it is one that I don't want. However, today there are rooms in the next category up that have not been available. Maybe DCL is on to me and want me to pay for the upgrade, lol. But you're right...something is going on.

Haha... I disappeared for a few days, and there is so much to catch up on! I am currently moving... Lots of packing and unpacking... I had to read 12 pages...
Can you add us to the list for the tastings as well...
For those of you doing the dolphin encounter on Monday in Cabo, is anyone doing it at 10:45? Want to share pictures?
Thanks for the interesting perspective on the e-readers. Maybe it's better to stick with an e-reader for books....very confusing...

Do you buy downloads of the books you want to read? What does that cost? Are they supplied via internet? What genres are available (kids books too)?
For the kindle, you purchase the books on Amazon & they automatically download to your device. I think the most expensive book that I've seen is $10. Many of them are less than that. They seem to have a wide variety of books available - we buy a lot of pre-teen/teen fiction for our daughter. I haven't purchased any kids books - but it looks like they do have them.

So I went in and put 2-A and 2-Y I left the youths at 17 (because I was to lazy to change them) and there were rooms in every Cat. except inside, but when I put the kids real ages it says there are no rooms at all. SO I would guess the kids clubs are going to be full

I did a little "Virdis Study" (hehehe) of my own and found there are a LOT of cabins (up to 40ish) available, and what's really interesting is a lot of them are in sequence. Like 7114, 7116, 7118 or 6588, 6590, 6592, 6594 and so on, just to point out a few. Interesting tidbit, not sure what it means other than they obviously did shuffle cabins around or held back cabins which they just released. I know they reserve cabins for special guests because on our PC cruise, Kaylee (fourmcds) had Ducky Williams in the cabin next to her and I think towards the end another notable was staying in the cabin. :confused3

Woohoo  I heard from DCL today re: our tasing. Here is the information they shared.
1- Request an item for tasting – for instance beer or tequila or martinis. Other choices may be mixology or champagne. The final decision will be affected by who is on the ship at the time to lead the tastings.
:woohoo: I reached out to ask for details on the mixology as that sounds very interesting. Once I hear back we can decide on which we would prefer.
2- Minimum number of guests 25 – maximum 50
:thumbsup2 I don't have my list with me at the moment but I think that we meet the 25 person minimum. Will provide an update later this evening.
3- $20 per person, non refundable. I will need a list of names before the sail date and if they choose not to attend they will still be charged if their name is on the list. All payments are charged on the ship.
:goodvibes It's great the DCL will take care of billing the fees. This is how they did on my first cruise. I think the price has gone up a bit but these days what hasn't. I still think it's a good deal to have our own little private function.
4- Cutoff date. I must have all names one week prior. New names cannot be added within the 7 days.
 I'll post the current list and will continue to take additional requests till we hit 50 or the cut-off date which I'll set as April 7th
5- You may request a time and date but the ship will have the final say depending on space available and their schedules. :)
:cool1: I think we should do this on a sea day and would suggest Tuesday, April 19 or Thursday April 21st. What say you guys and what time do you think would be good?

Thanks!
Be careful with the patch - I tried one many years ago - took 3 days for my sight to return!!! I agree with whoever suggested you try it first at home. Most of the medications for seasickness are antihystamines - sometimes benedryl will work. Meclizine (bonine) is over the counter...you can buy it and try it at home also. I personally have found they make me sleepy and do help. Ginger is the best solution, I have wrist bands as well. I have to use these things to fly, not watercraft...but the problem is the same. The wrist bands can not be the stretchy kind, they are not tight enough, and you have to wear both to get them to work - the directions say one will do - they lie.
Do you buy downloads of the books you want to read? What does that cost? Are they supplied via internet? What genres are available (kids books too)?
there are many websites for all kinds of books...some are unit dependent, kindle is pretty specific to Amazon, Nook is from Barnes & Nobel and supports the most types of e-reader format, there are other brands as well - but I am not familar with them. Baen.com has many free (thousands!) of science fiction books. Every Friday BN.com has a free book as well. One has to have the internet connection available to obtain the books. The Kindle is "hot" all the time (so using while inflight is tough) the Nook as the option of turning it off. Not sure if that is too much or not enough info...PM if you want more :)

I'm glad that you have finally decided to listen to my advice. For weeks Virdis had been on a quest to find the perfect room. A room in our price range in the middle or back of the ship. His logic was that most of the resteraunts were in the rear as well as the drink stations on deck 9, so being close to the back was good (at least in his mind). We were in room 1056 which was accross from the elevators on deck 1. The funny part about deck 1 is that you can not walk to the rear of the ship. The crew galley, break rooms, and cabins occupy the middle to back of deck 1 and this area is locked off to passengers. I know that it is in the bottom bowels of the ship, but I was content to have a room in a quiet part of the ship. The location annoyed Virdis but he liked the idea of not having much foot traffic so we were OK.
But night after night, he would log onto the DcL site to try to move our room. The room inventory kept changing but he could never find anything in our price range to the rear without going GTY which he did not want to do. Finally, one night after watching a movie, he grabbed his final beer for the night and logged into the DCL site as he usually does. All of a sudden I here him hollering and yelling for joy that not only he found a cabin but, it was the last cabin at the back of the ship. It was only a couple of hundred dollars more to upgrade so he went running to get the credit card and changed us.
Feeling very proud of himself, he came in and announced that our new room number is 7500. As he was showing me the deck plan to see where our new room was, he realized he made a grave mistake. He had been looking at the deck plans in the wrong direction!!! Instead of the rear of the ship, we were now at the first cabin on deck 7 at the front of the ship. The look on his face was priceless. He didn't even finish his beer. Obviously, he would do bad in the navy....hahahaha. I still love you and the room you got us baby. Even after this experience Virdis is still on the hunt for the perfect cabin. Now that we are less than 6 weeks away and now that we have our cruise docs, I think he finally is ready giving up his quest. That being said I'm still hoping/praying for alittle pixie dust to come our way. I would love to wake up to a verandah.

Speak to you all soon.
Helen, thank you so much for setting this up. Please put me down for 1, my DH does not drink at all and I think he would rather relax in the room for a while. I would totally be up for Margarita or Mixology, I like to fruity drinks.
Also, you can put me down for 5 lanyards.
Then how is Monday the 18th for everyone? Good chance to get acquainted.
I vote for the 18th as well. However, totally understand it is up to the ship.
