View Full Version : New clause in rumored 4/7 deal stinks for AP holders

If the rumor as posted on 'Touring Plans' turns out to be true then it really is an insult to AP holders!! I realize that these passes can be purchased and saved towards next year, but in reality my family just forked out thousands for 6 AP's and I really don't want to have to pay for a 7 day pass on top of that right now in order to take advantage of this offer. I wish they would include alternative deals for passholders since we are some of their most loyal customers. I know this is all in the rumor stage right now but I just hope the # of nights exception is left out.
Details are still being worked out, but we’ve heard from multiple, usually-reliable sources that Disney’s Buy-4-Get-7 deal will return next week. The announcement may be made as early as Monday, but could be as late as Thursday. Value resorts will have a slightly different “Buy-5-Get-2″ deal. Travel dates, we hear, could be October 1, 2009 through March 31, 2010. Book by December 20, 2009 (we think that’ll be extended). And you must purchase Magic Your Way tickets to match the number of nights of your stay.

We are not AP holders ( one day , I hope) but I hope that an option is offered for those that are. I agree, seems pretty unfair and frustrating.

That is frustrating that you just bought APs and it may not work out for this deal (but hopefully it will :goodvibes ).
I wish they would include alternative deals for passholders since we are some of their most loyal customers.
But on the positive side, I know they release room discounts just for AP holders. I don't know all the ins and outs of how often they're released/how much the discount is since I've never had an AP, but maybe that could work for you.

AP holders get discount that Non-AP holders don't.
I can't afford AP because we can only travel once a year--
I don't think that makes me less loyal to Disney. :sad2:

But the AP discount on the room is not generally as good as the 4/3 deal which is a 43% discount if you stay for exactly 7 nights.
I agree with OP that it is frustrating not to get at least as good a deal as the general public if you buy an annual pass. Plus I buy an AP so that I can go more than once a year. How am I going to use all these extra tickets if I have to keep buying them?
I wish Disney would allow AP holders to at least exchange the extra tickets for gift cards.....
If the AP discount is the same $96 on deluxe as it was last year then the room I have booked now-club level at AKL would be $20 more under 4/3 deal with the purchase of tickets for me & my DD but we'd have about $450 worth of tickets for future use. I will book that if I can and AP discount isn't any better but I wish I had an alternative to the ticket purchase.

That is why I wrote "some" of Disney's most loyal customers. Not saying that others are not loyal, just that if you are spending all of that money on an AP you are probably spending a lot of time at Disney and not as much time at competing parks in the area. At least that's how it is for us.
Anyway, I don't think it's a good strategy on Disney's part because people like me who barely go enough to make it worth it...maybe 2 or 2 1/2 weeks if we're lucky per year will just sit back and wait for general public deals to come along and book when or if they do. By purchasing the AP I'm pretty much committing my family to spending most or all of our vacation time (food, hotel, souvenirs) at Disney ...which I would think is what Disney wants.

Did anyone do the math?
Current AP rate for moderate resort in October $99/tax.
If you did a 7-night stay at a moderate resort for October using the Buy 4 Get 3 free, its 43% off of room rate. Standard room rate is $170/night. 43% off gives $97/night plus tax.
Let's try AKL:
- AP rate $169/night in October
- 4/3 deal for 7 night stay is 43% off - standard rate is $290/night - 43% is $165/night.
The B4G3 deal maxes out at 43% only for 7 night stays - its less than that if you go over or under 7 nights. The AP rate is consistent.
Seems fair to me.
We are an AP family and the key for us is if this offer is extended into the busy April season like last year. I would be shocked if an AP discount came close to matching the 4/3 during spring break.

Exactly right. I posted something similar on another thread. Last year the only thing that made the 4/3 deal a better value than the AP rate was the $200 gift card. I did not buy an AP pass last year and booked the 4/3 instead because of this. If the gift card is offered again this year I'll do the same.

Maybe I'm missing something, but this seems to pretty much negate any good reason to get an AP in the first place, which is what I thought the OP was getting at.

Last year I saved $442 more than AP on my 7 night stay in a garden view room at the Poly. I had to pay about $150 for two one day tickets to book the deal but the $200 gift card more than covered that. This year that savings would be wiped out by having to buy 4 day tickets.

Well its all speculation so let's see what actually happens. Maybe Disney will come up with something targeted directly for AP holders. I'm sure they want keep the parks and the coiffers filled - here's hoping that everyone gets a good deal!!!

Maybe I'm missing something, but this seems to pretty much negate any good reason to get an AP in the first place, which is what I thought the OP was getting at.
I think the OP was objecting to being forced to purchase a MYW ticket that matches the length of stay when they already had an AP in hand, rather than being able to opt for a single day base ticket.
But yes, overall AP room-only discounts are roughly the same most of the time as a 4/3 deal. The difference is the 4/3 deal includes discounts on MYW tickets (admittedly, that's just $9 savings), and wasn't dining included in the 4/3 deal as well?
I'd be interested in learning if there is a clause regarding non-expire tickets (which are a much better bargain if you can use them or upgrade them)...

Dining wasn't included in the "3 free" -- we had to pay for the ddp for each night of our trip, even the free nights.

For deluxe resorts that is only true for the least expensive rooms like standard view at AKL or WL but if you want a more expensive room or deluxe resort the savings for 4/3 over AP are significant.

That's what I'm wondering about too. If it works like last year, we were planning on 10 day NE tickets, to save the unused days for a future trip. Now I'm wondering if so many people did that last year (or applied them to AP purchases, remember the threads about that mess?) that they're going to limit the discounted tickets to length of stay.
I think the OP was objecting to being forced to purchase a MYW ticket that matches the length of stay when they already had an AP in hand, rather than being able to opt for a single day base ticket.

Yes, I believe that was the complaint. However, the reason for that complaint seems to be that a clause like this would make having an AP meaningless. That said, although all companies sometimes do dumb things, I would be surprised if something like this actually happens, as it is so obviously stupid and would seem to be specifically targeted at "punishing" AP holders.

Right now I have AKL for $938.00 a week (11/29-12/5) with AP room-only. With the 4/3 deal, the same room w/a 1 day ticket would cost me $1535.35 so I'm not sure why anyone would believe that the 4/3 deal is better than an AP rate.
Comparing my current AP rate for ASMo for same dates above, I'm paying $333.60 or $49.20 per night. With the 4/3 deal, the same room would come out to $704.87.
Am I missing something?:confused3
If tickets do turn out to be length of stay, then the prices above would be much higher with the savings being less attractive to make me want to even glance at a 4/3 deal vs. my AP rates.
BTW, AKL is room for my family and ASMo is room for in-laws.;)

OP here. Here are the numbers I am looking at...
November 13-20 7 nights at the Yacht Club Resort water view
AP rates are $344 per night or $2709 for the 7 nights
Rack rate for that time frame is $465 per night... so if I multiply that by 4 the total is $1860...a savings of close to a thousand dollars. Plus under the old plan I will have to add 1 day passes but it's still a great savings. I don't mind investing in the one day passes but don't want to pay hundreds more right now for 7 day passes I really don't need. Our renewal is not until late July.

I agree with you-we are not pass holders but travel to Disney sometimes twice a year-we stay at deluxes & spend alot of $$$-we never get a pin/code-NOTHING-I think that Disney should give out deals to returning guests-both pass holders or just regular guests!!! This 4/3 deal won't work for us-so we probably won't go again this upcoming year....

disney already knows the AP crowd will either stay for a longer trip or come back, they don't need to entice u with another trip.:headache:
im sure most peeps are glad disney offers APs, along with frequent AP rates & other benefits.
The current ability to hold onto a tix associated with a reservation for future usage or the ability upgrade even a single day tix toward longer than length of stay or annual pass (in DVCer's case along with their current AP discount) is great; i'd hate to see this eliminated:eek:. Not long ago u could use several different tix to upgrade to 1 MYW tix & that didn't last long:rolleyes:.

As someone that just bought AP's I will be very disappointed if the 'you have to buy 7 day MYW rules' applies. BUT since we won't be staying at a special deluxe view room the AP rate if it is as good as it is now for Jan will work for us, as we want to stay at WL. I just hope Disney announces a great deal for both AP and non AP holders for the spring.

And my family loves Disney but honestly really tired of hearing how there are so many pins/codes that people who visit only one or twice receive. I don't think that it's a problem-they know we will return I just wish they would do something for returning guests. And I have also read about discounts up to 55% off deluxe club level-so if these travel agencies can afford to to "sell" these trips why can't Disney offer great discounts to those of us who continue to go there?
Will someone explain, please. I thought you got free park tickets, too. You buy a 4 day park ticket and you receive a 3 day park ticket added on for free which nets you a 7 day park ticket for the cost of 4. The OP is implying that you pay for the length of your stay on park tics.

Not quite. You could get any length ticket you wanted - you simply paid for three days less for the ticket (I forget if there was a minimum number of days in order to get the 3 free). So you got a single ticket of the appropriate length.
Those with APs opted to pay for a single day ticket to minimize the cost, and use that at a later time for credit to a new ticket/AP/renewal.
Now the rumor is that you will be required to purchase a ticket that matches the length of stay, regardless. This requires paying more up front.

Last year you bought a 4 day ticket and they gave you a 7 day ticket. The difference in cost between a 4 day ticket and a 7 day ticket is about $10.
I like many AP holders chose to only buy a 1 day ticket at a cost of about $150 for myself & my DD. This year it sounds like I would have to buy the 4 day ticket (but be given 7 day tickets) at a cost of about $445 with a value of about $465.
Those tickets do not expire if you don't use them so they can be saved for future use. I have already used the 1 day tickets I purchased last year to buy new AP's in July. I would much rather not be out the $445 now to save only $20 on the tickets I'm purchasing.
Plus I have a trip booked in early Dec for free dining which will require the purchase of tickets. I am staying at Pop on a pin code with my friends with the regular DDP so that is a much better deal than 4/3.
I am taking my DD for her 7th birthday in Jan and want to stay CL at AKL so this 4/3 will likely be a much better discount on the room than AP discount. I will likely book the 4/3 deal. My calculations say it will actually cost me about $20 more than an AP discount but I will have the $465 worth of tickets to use in the future. I'm hoping for the gift card again this year!

It looks like we'll be there at the same time LD. WOOHOO I wanted to know what you calculate AKL CL to come out to with this 4/3 deal?:teacher: I got a great rate at AKL and may want to upgrade to CL as we got a free upgrade last month at WL from SV to CL. It kinda spoiled us (which I'm sure that was what Disney intended to do) so now we want to try CL at our favorite resort. We're thinking a few extra dollars will be the price of the upgrade to CL if there are lots of CL rooms available, but at this point I can't really tell until I call AKL and find out where they are at capacity wise a little closer to our travel dates.

Let me start by saying I am a bit addicted to Disney. My DH doesn't share that problem.:rotfl: He would rather not go to Disney but we have been taking 1 family trip per year since 2004. One trip a year just isn't enough for me so I tend to also take 1 child at a time. I have DD(10), DS(8), DD(6).
When you are there in November I will be at Pop with my DD(10), a friend, and her DH. All 4 of us sharing one room at Pop. We've done that before so I know we'll have a great trip-I just have to bring my iPod so I don't have to listen to my friend's DH snoring. My friend got a pin so we are getting the regular DDP for free. So we are paying $103.50 per night ($82 + $10 extra adult fee + 12.5% tax) but are getting about $160 per night in free dining. No room discount can beat that!!!! We do have to buy tickets to get that deal. We have 4 one day base tickets in the package. The total is about $1,050 so my share is $525 and I'll have about $160 worth of tickets to use in the future.
I also have a trip planned Jan 20th to 27th with my youngest for her 7th birthday. My AKL calculations are based on 2010 rack rate of club level room of $350. You must be booked in a standard view room-2009 value season rack rate of $240. AP discount in December is $101 off so you're paying $139.
I don't think 4/3 deal will work for you because you are only going for 6 nights so you would be getting 2 free nights at rack or $480 + tax rather than 6 nights of AP discount or $606 + tax.
In my case I would get 3 free nights at $350 or $1050 + tax free instead of AP discount of about $700. So the 4/3 deals save me nearly $400 when you add in the tax. That would almost cover the cost of 1 adult and 1 child 4 day ticket if I have to buy those. I know I'll be back so it seem worth the $40 or so investment now for $445 worth of tickets in the future.
I will probably book 4/3 for January trip if I can get AKL CL but I'll still keep my eye out for room only and AP deals.
I enjoyed AKL CL last May when I tried it for the first time. All club level rooms are savanah view. I really LOVED the special sunrise safari that CL guests can take!
Have you considered upgrading to a pool view room at AKL? It would only be about $10 more per night.

Have you considered upgrading to a pool view room at AKL? It would only be about $10 more per night.
We always book standard view at AKL and then get the free upgrade. We have gotten it 100% of the time during the last 4 years as we only go during value season. Since DD4 is still not in school, we can pretty much go whenever we want, although this will be our final year with this.:sad1:
I know we shouldn't rely on the free upgrade, but if we don't get it it's not that big of a deal. We know exactly where to go to view the animals and AKL is our home resort so as long as we're there, we're "home."
I guess 4/3 works good for you, but definetly does not work for us. Free dining is a joke to us. Somewhere on here I have a breakdown on how much we would lose by going with FD which I believe is like staying a whole other week at 40% off at AKL.
EDIT: here is my post
my trip at AKL for 7 days:
With AP rate: $938.00 including tax
With FD: $1863.00 including tax - also includes 1 day base ticket for each of us (3) - It would be $2634.00 with 6 day base tickets
room #2 ASMo (for in-laws) LOL
With AP rate: $338.00 including tax
With FD: $786.27 including tax w/1 day base tickets - It would be $1241.02 w/tax with 6 day base tickets
Room #1 savings: $1696 w/6 day tickets or $925.00 w/1 day tickets (we haven't spent that much on food in 3 trips)
Room #2 savings: $903.02 w/6 day tickets or $448.27 w/1 day tickets (these are only QS meals; can't eat $450.00 in QS meals - unless I eat for 2 weeks at Flame Tree BBQ YUMMY)
Please note that all of these figures are for MY family and YMMV. DW and I always split our plates because we just can't eat that much food. That's why I can say FD isn't free, for me.
This is another post that shows how much we paid to eat during our trip last month:
My wife and I shared our meals as we cannot eat 1 entire portion without leaving alot of food left over on each plate. We hate wasting food so we share each plate, which leaves us feeling full for quite some time. DD4 eats from the childs menu so we pay less than $7.00 per meal for her each day plus a snack here & there. We did a split stay and only charged food on our room card. First bill from POFQ was $86.00 and the bill from WL was $111.00 (please note that we were WL Club Level so we had snacks and light meals to keep us filled up most of the time). I can tell you we ate at 9 dragons, cosmic rays, casey's, Le Cellier and a few other snacks in between.

My thoughts are unless you take advantage of the full 7 days-the 4/3 deal is not that great. If that is what it's going to be- we won't go & we were planning to try to go in January....Free dining is better for us but we can't stay the full 7 days...just not worth the money for us...

Hi, I just had this conversation about buyng tickets when I am a passholder. I said, "What do I do with all of the extra tickets?" She said you can take the value of the tickets and apply it to your next annual pass, save the tickets or use them in california.
What do you mean by use them in California? Can the MYW tickets be used at DL? I have never been out to the west coast but I have been thinking about it. So if we got a 4/3 deal and we are all APs and we don't need the 7 day tickets then we could use them at DL?
If so, how long would we have to use them? Forever? Or would they expire? Also if I didn't want to use them towards my AP upgrade this year but wanted to get another AP in say 2011, could I use the 7 day tickets toward that purchase or would they be expired? Would I get the current value for them or what I paid at the time?
Thanks!

hang in there, i know that this latest deal is no good for AP holders but maybe they will release some great ap room rates. This past year we were able to book the 4/3 deal but we didn't have to buy but a 1 day base ticket that we can deal with doing but we could never buy a 6 day hopper for each family member. No Way!!! like you said, we pay a lot of the AP. just over this past year, we had to purchase the 1 day base tickets but we were able to get the free dining, way worth it. we now have (4) 1 day base tickets built up to buy our tickets for next sept trip.
good luck!!

If this comes to be, it really not new, its just going back to the way it use to be a few years ago.
Until recently, when you bought a package you had to buy tickets for your entire length of stay, so those of with the APs were not able to enjoy the deals that were coming out e.g "Free Dining". Then they changed that rule and you only had to buy a 1 day ticket.
I suppose that Disney has decided this "loop hole" is not benefical for them. It would be nice though to go back to the discounts that we as AP holders would get, like the 45% off the room rate.

Can anyone confirm that if you have an AP, the minimum number of MYW day ticket you have to buy is 4day base ticket, regardless of your length of stay? What if I'm staying for 8 nights, or 9 nights. Can i still buy only a 4day ticket or do I now have to buy a 5 or 6 day base ticket to meet the requirements of 4/3?

Darn, it's true!!!
Buy a 4-night/4 day vacation package at a MODERATE, DELUXE or DELUXE VILLA resort, get a 7-night/7-day package. That's 3 FREE hotel nights and 3 extra days on your theme park admission tickets, equivalent to a 43% discount on your room and tickets! You must buy a package that includes at least 4 nights' accommodations at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel plus minimum 4-day Magic Your Way Base Tickets to qualify for the 3 FREE nights and the 3 extra days on your tickets.
Buy a 5-night/5 day vacation package at a VALUE resort, get a 7-night/7-day package. That's 2 FREE hotel nights and 2 extra days on your theme park admission tickets, equivalent to a 29% discount on your room and tickets! You must buy a package that includes at least 5 nights' accommodations at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel plus minimum 5-day Magic Your Way Base Tickets to qualify for the 2 FREE nights and the 2 extra days on your tickets.

Not only does it hurt AP holders it hurts those of us who do a longer stay. We do a two week stay in the summer. This year I booked two one weeks consecutive trips with the 7/4 offer (one day tickets). I was able to get 14 nights hotel for the price of 8. We already had APs so I just saved the two one day park tickets.
I think buying two 5 days passes is a lot higher than one 10 day MYW pass.

Just read about this -- i am very bummed. We are AP holders, and are going for 10 days in March -- (and 9 in November) this deal could have really worked for us, but i can't see how it would now with the clause thrown in.. :(
Really stinks.
