christmas elves anyone?

anyone doing the christmas elf thing this year? it's time to start figuring out what kind of trouble they are going to cause. :) at least this year I was smart and didn't pack them up with the rest of christmas... I know where they are, where their passports are and where their reindeer pals are. They usually pop in at halloween for a quick check up on dd and then "arrive" for their extended stay after thanksgiving...

hmmm how to explain the christmas elf. in our house it's kind of like a christmas countdown. the elves show up dec 1st and each day until christmas morning. they bring little presents, cause all kinds of trouble and leave notes about what is going on in the house for santa so he has a better idea on the whole naughty/nice thing. :)

there is something called "elf on a shelf" which is an elf and a book kind of explaining this a bit more.

elves are not the easiest things to find so some people use stuffed animals instead.

look at khols or tuesday morning or homegoods. Or if you have "cute" stores...I found some of mine in williamsburg for example. took some pictures today of the elves at "inner quest" (team building) so they were climbing over railings, going down zip lines.... Also a reindeer race or two... :)

Nope, the little boy I watch was being a pain in the well, you know! He was being a terror... not acting out, just "look at this", "look", "oooh, look".. So I told DH I was going out this weekend....

I need to start my list "activities"...
I've got one for sure... we don't keep the lid of the toliet seat up.. that's a big no-no.. so the lid will be up, green water and tp'd just in time for my kids to see it! LOL
Another day, will be the elf in my DD's vehicle as she will get her license on Dec. 1st... LOL

if anyone is still looking for elves, I just bought a super cute one over at home goods (not the kind of creepy analise ones) this one was 9.99 and was pushing a little cart with presents on it. you could easily separate the elf from the cart and he/she is bendable. :) also bought a moose... it was cute. :) and cheap. :)

also updated the elf blog with halloween pics that the goblins sent jangle and an update on swine flu. :) cause of COURSE the elves and santa have to get vaccinated... :)

Not crazy at all!!! :) DH knows we are doing it for the kids....but I'm actually doing it for my DH too.. I have actually contacted his boss and a co-worker to help me out! So, what happens will happen at the office.. he will call and throw a hissy and I can laugh knowing all along I had it done!!

I went to Home Goods and most of the elves were these really ugly Annalee ones. They were scary looking. Lots to pick from though. Little ones for $5 and larger ones for $20 and a bunch in between. But I just couldn't bring myself to buy it.

Then I saw this little elf all by himself sitting on a sleigh with a tree. He had a face with 3-D features instead of the scary painted face. He's glued on the seat really well, but I think with some really sharp scissors, I can set him free.

How do we name our elves? Do they leave a letter of introduction?

there is a super long list over on magical holidays/organised christmas?? (or something to that effect) on all the different things the elves did last year, some were rather elaborate... my elves and reindeer have passports and shot records that come with them to our house, someone over on 2peas posted them and I copied them. :) I may have pictures someplace... ok maggie you convinced me to get one. so last week i ordered him and had it shipped to bubba! i told him that someone told me that their kids had a personal elf that chats back and forth with santa. he asked if i bought him and i said no. someone gave me a website to request santa to send an elf out to him. i then took it further and said that i went back to the website to see if santa had gotten the request and the website is not good anymore. i told him that's how it works. you put your request in and it only works that one time!
he came with the book and he LOVES it! we named him Campbell. which was my mother's last name. and he said he wanted to name him that because if this elf can go and chat with santa and be back before morning then he must be able to go and check on her in heaven!:angel:

and he gets so excited to see where he is in the morning!

i have an update......
our elf Campbell came back with a friend!

i went to home goods and bought an anna lee elf and came home at lunch and moved them both to be hanging off the oven door. when bubba got off the bus i told him how busy my day was and that i never even got a lunch break. We opened the door and there they were!!!!! He was so super excited!!!! So we now have 2 elves. And they have been so funny. Where they end up in the morning.
He did not want to go to bed last night and DH used it to his advantage and started calling out to the them. Up and right to bed he went!

I bought the elf swing set basically. has a girl elf swinging on a swing suspended from a candycane and then the little elf was attached to the pole. very easy to take off though. :) the pair was 9.99. there were a bunch of different ones.

I found them kind of shoved onto the bottom shelf not quite right in the middle of all the christmas stuff. the baby elf is attached to either a swing set or maybe a snowman? there is another elf with the baby one. you might have to dig around...

as for the reindeer issue, my cvs had 6 of them in the display boxes on an endcap facing towards the pharmacy (again, not actually in the xmas aisle) but then they had a case with the other 3 up high where they tend to store the stuff so that you wouldn't actually notice it...)

so, thanks to the tent post, I now own the gingerbread tent... here is a list of other things in the $ spot that would make really cute elf supplies to go with the tent...

felt gift bags (they could be sleeping bags)
small stocking (next to the felt gift bags) would be perfect sleeping bags for little elves)
game night candy (4 boxes of candy in game boxes (life, monopoly, operation and clue) no idea what the candy is but the boxes are perfect size for the elves..

not in the dollar spot just random thoughts (to go with the tent theme)

bag of mini marshmallows for roasting
toothpicks to roast the marshmallows on

well you could start it like a flat stanley.. pretend to mail a box from the north pole to your class and the elf could be inside it with whatever other things you might find (tents, stocking sleeping bags, etc) you could also have a note saying that he/she is a foreign exchange student from elf school and wants to learn all about real children and their school...

the elf could share his/her favourite things about the north pole, fav bedtime stories, games, etc and then the kids could share with the elf their favourite things.

you could get a picture of the class with the elf and journal stuff...

if you have a home goods, start there. michael's had a whole end cap of elves as well, but they weren't nearly as cute as the home good ones. :) if you can't find an elf, you could use a reindeer (from cvs :) ) oh the trick with home goods is to keep going in because they seem to change their stuff practically on a daily basis. :)

the tents are in the 2.50 part of the dollar spot, they are kind of big because apparently they are really for your pet... they are new, part of the christmas stuff.

there are also elf outfits for your dog... (no I didn't see these cause I didn't know about it until AFTER I was safely out of target :rotfl2:)

don't forget the felt gift bags (also in the $ spot) which as buffy pointed out, are perfect for sleeping bags...

I am getting the biggest kick out of reading this!
When my neices were little and my brother was getting a divorce we had the girls stay with us alot. I am 10 years older than the older one and I sat alot.
They were acting up one day and I basically said "See that light in the tree, the one blinking? Do you know what that is? Santa sent an elf to watch you!" I have no idea how I came up with that but did they ever believe! And for years and the when they had their kids they did the same thing!:love:
With my own kids the elves are still in the tree but we have small stockings that are hung from the ceiling fan and they get a little goodie each day except occassionally weekends, the elves days off, kids have to act up sometimes!

hallmark has both the elf on a shelf book with elf and a separate activity book to go along with it. they also have a book with a mouse attached to it called something like, "clues to tell if the elves/reindeer/santa/mrs claus have been watching you", it was cute but kind of pricey.. oh they also had the tiny rodney and rhonda reindeer which are perfect for baby reindeer. :) I did buy a baby rodney... couldn't help myself. :) (and then I called buffy and told her and she said that she was NEVER going to answer the phone again when my name comes up on caller ID. :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:) clearly I need to call other people, but I only have her number. :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

hahahahahahaha, we saran wrapped a brand new resident into his call room once... (he was being an idiot, it was july and he was literally a brand new doc) then we called him "stat"... long story short, he bounced off his door. :) it was pretty funny.

We were at the Disney Store last night, and they had two elves for the new movie? I'm not sure what it is, but they were cute!! One was a boy and one was a girl!

I also got the cutest Recollections elf and reindeer stamps at M's last night for $1 each! Just in case you needed to do "elf mail" or something!!

OMG! this is one of the cutest and funniest threads I have found and read in a long time!!!

I bought an elf for my neice about a month ago and found out on Thanksgiving that both grammies did the same. Couldn't send Calvin back to the North Pole, so DH and I have a new decoration. Now I have all these ideas to bring him to life! Thanks all.

Anyone who is looking for an elf I got mine from northpole magic.

Calvin will travel to WDW with us in a few weeks. Need to find some florida wear for Calvin.

did anyone ever post a comprehensive list of elf pranks? ours are coming tomorrow (tonight)...

at some point they are going to wrap all of kate's school books and put them back in her backpack (gotta get that done either for tomorrow or early next week because then it's exams and she's done)

they will be having a snowball fight (have cotton balls just for this)

playing the wii

toilet papering the living room again

I think this year they will hang dh's boxers from the ceiling fan (after they attempt to do laundry of course)

teaching the reindeer how to fly... (hanging them from the ceiling fan and having the elves hanging onto some kind of harness thingie

playing board games or card games

posing for elf xmas cards with the nutcrackers that are out

"helping" to decorate the tree... getting tangled in the lights or something

they are coming to dallas with us for the weekend and since it is st nicholas day on the 6th, kate will be leaving one of her hardshoes out on the 5th and the elves will put something in it, no idea what but... (we are there for an irish dance comp, might as well get some extra use out of the hard shoe right? :) )

2. Set the cars... The elf's will set Dad's car and DD's car (her first day to drive) w/ blaring Christmas music and notes for each of them... For the little boys, they elves will be racing cars in the hallway!
3. TP bathroom and they will be a empty rolls in the living room that they will be draped over
4. Movie Night popcorn party/soda cans strewn around living room
5. Christmas shopping on the computer
6. Brownie night
7. snowball fight in hallway w/ 5 packages of cotton balls everywhere!
8. Boxer/panty raid all hanging from the ceiling fan
9. Decorate the front porch all new items..they will do this while they are in school and the elves will have a mishap and be hanging from the new ornaments or garland! LOL
10. Campfire on teh coffee table roasting mini-marshmallows
11. ????
12. Midnight fast food run w/ cars parked unusally (think I'm gonna line them up east-west instead of north south! LOL
13. tripod out... photo session!!!
14. snowflake the hallway
15. new ornaments for each of the kids, the elves will be hanging w/ them in the tree
16. canned good sock fight, after doing laundry, the elves will set up canned goodes into forts and be flinging socks at one another
17. pizza night???
18. sleigh and reindeer test run.. will get a new big sleigh from FIL and have the reindeer hitched and the elves inside the sleigh practicing take off
19. stack all the wrapped gifts in the center of the room from under the tree
20. goldfish fishing, yup the elves will be sitting around the sink fishing for the famous Goldfish!
21. game night, the elves will be playing a new card game (scrabble one)
22. make snow flour angels

24. The elves will be packed and ready to return to the North Pole

I finally had a chance to gather up everything {I was going to do it Tuesday, but the parents arrived early} and took the boy elf off this sled that is carrying a tree.

Only to find out 1-it's a GIRL elf and 2-she has no wires in her legs and 3-her posture is stuck in the sitting position.

I have no car this week. I am stuck homebound. I can't even go get a new one who arrives late to the training. :headache:

Now what??

Guess I better go make up a letter that says we didn't qualify for an elf this year. :sad:

I realized I am over thinking this whole thing.

Gamma Polaris or Ursa Merak be a girl elf's name.:thumbsup2 I figure out which one when I start tweaking the letter.

I remembered that one person uses a cute little figurine. Therefore my elf does not need to be completely movable. Part of the magic is she has to return to the same position each day.

Whew. I really need to be not so anal about things. :sad2:

well I have an elf notebook for me. I keep elf ideas, the elf passports, reindeer shot records, craft ideas, websites that might come in handy, etc in this book. I got the idea from holiday magic which is a christmas message board like this one. they have a whole thing just about elves. :)

you can do this however you want. :) my elves don't return to the same position everyday since they are usually caught in some sort of mischief. :) Mine are also "touchable" because they are soft and non breakable. When kate was litte, she would take them to bed with her. It's pretty much whatever works for you. Just have fun with it. :)

my elf agents are not looking very promising right now. They are being fitted with new clothes to coordinate with their humans.

And frankly I'm not really in an elfin' mood right now. I caught the Bah humbugs, very nasty illness. I don't want the elves to catch it.

I made small file folders (6.5" x 4" rectangles) folded in half... they are decorated and used for the elves to report their findings to Santa. However, if the kids would stumble across them, they haven't been written in but have a note stating that they are written in "magic invisible" ink that must be sprinkled w/ magic dust that only Santa has access too!

I have a big file folder (regular one from the store) for the shot records for the reindeer trainees we have accompanying our elves. It's just in case there is an emergency and we have to seek treatment for illness! (My kids are gonna love this one as I carry their shot records w/ me at all times).

Passport, I have passports from the embellishment aisle (Jolees) from the scrapbook stores. I've included our elves names, date of birth, and places they have been in the past 2 months! All ficticious places and used stamps I have at home for this year!

Wow! Our elves were well received by all...especially DS9!! He is all into this.. He would NOT touch them... He said there is a one touch rule so I'm not getting busted! LOL
DH was amazed to see how excited he got. He kept asking me when I put that stuff out and I said, I didn't.. when would I have time to do that? I went to bed right after you last night and when I went to bed the only thing on that table was the house phone!

The older kids will be more excited when the mischief begins!!!
