We'll get a better thread name soon I promise, send in your ideas!.
I have a request in with DU for a cat 11. Sailing with old Friends, can't wait. To pass the time, I have been playing, need to have something in my signature, lol.
I have cancelled this cruise, but will keep up this post until someone who is sailing volunteers to edit a different post on this page to include all this information, but will keep adding to the roll call as long as it is needed. I will also keep the website up until told it is no longer needed and will continue to add to it, as I have many friends sailing and it will be fun to plan along side them, and vicarious sail with you all.

I have always wanted to go to Alaska. DH is meh but that's not unusual. My daughter wanted to know why I would be discussing something that is SO far away. I said because I need the motivation early to save my money towards the cruise. So thanks for the thread to keep me motivated.

Saving is good, looking at HAL, RCC and Princess cruise excursions, we will need too. I've already found several offered by multiple cruise lines that look very cool.

wow a GTY already for a cat 11C .......that was fast.
We are planning to book by monday for the same date. WE are going back and forth between this cruise and the Dream. Sure widh they had also put out the Dreams itenerary.
We have wanted to do Alaska with Disney for a long time now. But we want to be on the new ship also. But Alaska on DCL...how much more fun could that be:cool1:
We are looking at booking either 1 cat 5B and 1 11c across the hall or 2 adjoining cabins Cat 5C. Our boys at the time we sail will be 14 and 17. DH will be 56 and I will be 53.
WE may be bringing one of their friends who will be 18. He is like our 3rd child.
So who here has children and what are their ages????

They may wind up like us and never grow up! :lmao: We are thinking, just thinking at this point about bringing one of our grandsons with us. Aaron knows several of the kids sailing and would LOVE it. We have not mentioned it to him yet and won't for probably a year until we get back from the TA cruise and see how the $$ settles out. :rolleyes1

Checking in PJ with my Geek buddies!
We are on. Cat 7a, 7122 in the aft of the ship.
There will be no shortage of 11 year old girls - my daughter Sophia and and least two others that I know of who have not checked in yet. Also some slightly younger ones.
Our party-
John (OMG will be 51 at this time)
Amy (I'm not telling)
Sophia (will be 11 on 2/17/11) a millennial baby
Our son will be starting his medical residency on 7/1/11, he will be 24 at the time but will not be able to join us, and we do not even know where he will be doing said residency at that time.
This should be a GREAT cruise, with WONDERFUL friends for us!

Half of ours is paid now since we had to pay the full $600 pp. I still had an OBB from the 2006 cruise when there was no 50% & if it wasn't in effect when you originally booked the OBB it can't be added later. Oh well. The final balance won't be so bad.

We ended up in that same catch 22. I asked if we could do a "fresh" booking and only pay the 1/2 deposit and then cancel the other one . . . yeah, but then we lose the 10% OBB discount, and also the $200 OBC. Not worth it. Just pulled it out of savings to book.
Like you said, the final balance won't be so bad, but DCL has my money for almost 2 years instead of me.

If it would have made a difference in the long run we could have just booked a new ressie to get the 50% deposits and had PJ reshop it on her cruise but not worth it IMO either.

We went in 2007 on the RCCL Radiance. Excellent trip. Perfect weather (no rain). I am expecting this trip to have a lot of rain to balance things out. Same ports - Skagway (White Pass and Yukon Railroad), Juneau (Mendenhall Glacier and Whale Watching) and Ketchikan (Explorer by Land and Sea). We also stopped at Icy Strait Point and saw Hubbard Glacier. We did a pre-night at the Sheraton. No red-eye and no same day flights for us (to many horror stories).

Lisa I re-read and it is FROM $99, I am guessing a room in July would be around $149, which isn't so bad from what I am seeing at other close by hotels.
Lollipop mom, who is doing a Vancouver FAQ, said that many of the hotels come up on hotwire, but in the middle of summer, I don't know if I would chance it.

We will probably stay at least one night prior to the cruise in Vancouver.
I asked about pre-cruise hotels through DCL Here is what I was told for 3 people
Fairmont Vancouver Airport - $249
Fairmont Waterfront Vancouver - $274
Fairmont Pacific Rim Vancouver - $294
I check Fairmont's website and this is agood deal. Their cheapest rooms run around $320 - $370 per night for similar night in 2010.
Although "Starting at $99" is more suited for my pocketbook
Less on hotel more for DCL excursions.:)

Hi everyone hope your all well. About 2 weeks ago I sent an e-mail to a friend that is in Iraq to see if she wanted to go on the Alaska cruise with us. She is a Colonel/major and her DH is up in the ranks also, so she has a better idea on where and when her times end and when they will have off or be.
Anyway, she sent me back an e-mail saying YES they do want to join us. She gave me some dates but will e-mail me back Sunday Night to change those dates to one. However the dates she has picked are not the same as the one I already booked with all of you.
She is trying to see if this date will work for her since I have this one already booked. But if not than I will have to change it. Bummer. Either way I will be up at 5am booking them a cabin. So I may be leaving all of you before we get to know each other.
I will stop in to let you know Monday what has become of me......pirate:

For anyone concerned because we are going so late in the summer and the weather is warmer, I just read this post from someone who went on Princess to Alaska in July.
One important thing I learned when we were most recently up and listening to the naturalist on board is that the salmon run in July and August. That means that the wildlife is SUPER active during those months. We saw TONS of whales and even a wild orca on our last trip. It was amazing!

Angie, the PC repo didn't go up until after 9 am though. That thing was going up in price every 30 minutes 2 1/2 years ago while we sat on hold. That is the one that amazed me. It did go up tonight for 4 people...but not 3. :confused3

I'm looking at Amtrak from Whitefish, MT. But....it looks like the link from Seattle to Vancouver is by Amtrak bus, not train. That would be okay though. We can get a sleeper car for the two of us for around $325 total. We may think about this. That sounds fun to me!

I did and it was only around $50 a piece less if that...I checked out of LA, and other Airports in the area and all the same. I tryed flying to all different areas in Ca. Seattle, and other and the price had no real change.
We can afford it. It's just the principle of the thing. The airlines cry no one will fly them but they keep giving us less and charging us more and gas is not going up. These airlines cry bankruptcy and want the GOV to bail them out yet they continue to do what they do.
Maybe they will have an airline war when it gets close to going and we can fly out for $99 each way :thumbsup2 okay okay...I'm dreaming but it has been known to happen:lmao:

Hello, everyone! We will be joining you on the July 26th sailing! We are cruising this November and swore we wouldn't book anymore because we are considering building a new house. Well, once the time came around and the itinerary was Alaska, I no longer cared about building a new house. :confused3 We just had to do this cruise!
We are:
Brian (my husband)
Susan (me)
Brianna (16 at time of cruise)
Brandon (13 at time of cruise)
We booked a cat. 11B. We've never sailed in an inside stateroom, but I was trying to keep the cost down, so we'll see how we end up liking it. I really didn't care as long as we were in though! I was in complete sticker shock with the deposit though, but atleast it feels like a big chunk of our trip is already paid for.
What will everyone do as far as pre-cruise? I went ahead and had Disney add air to our package, but I will probably change it once it gets closer. I did a comparison on travelocity for the same time next summer, and air is expensive! I also found that flying in to Seattle was a lot cheaper!
I'm anxious to get to know everyone and cannot wait for this cruise to arrive!:goodvibes

Angie, there is also an option for the train at the same price. We took Amtrak from NC to Orlando one time in regular coach and we were 6 hours late. Not a fun trip but we slept in our seats. This is only a 4 hour trip that shows leaving at 7:40 am and arriving at 11:40 am on the 510 Cascades train
. Of course this is for a February Thursday run. It sounded like it will be easier to just rent a car when we get to Vancouver. I want to explore the area before the cruise.

It is an overnighter from Whitefish though, then change in Seattle and the route shows a bus for us from there. I could do the seat, but I'm married to an old guy who can't sleep without his fighter pilot mask. (CPAP) :sad2:;)

Angie, there is one train to VAN and one train back to SEA each day. Then there are several Amtrak buses each day. There is a Amtrak station closer to SEA TEC, but if you chose to get on the train there, they kick you off on to a bus, even though the train is going on to VAN, :confused3. But if you take a cab to the SEA Amtrak station you can take the train all the way to VAN.

My plan is looking like I will cross the boarder to BUF and then take a plane to SEA Tec and either the bus or train to VAN. I wonder what kind of looks I will get at the boarder, lol.
Toronto to VAN $800
Buf to VAN $600
Buf to Sea $340 plus $70(train trip along the coast = extra adventure)
All the flights from BUF to SEA seem to land in the afternoon/evening, so it will mean a night in Seattle, then the early train to VAN and one night there before the cruise. Would love to do Grousse Mountain and the Aquarium one before the cruise and one after.

PJ the train to/from Seattle & Vancouver runs twice a day. :) Check out February for availability. There is the 7 am run and a 6:30 pm run that gets in Vancouver around 10:45 pm.
Did I read somewhere that it is a hassle to rent a car in Seattle and take it across the border? We did this once...flew from VA to Boston and rented a car, took the fairy at Bar Harbor to Yarmouth, NS then traveled up to Cape Brenton and then down through NB to St. Johns and back to Boston. That was in 1994 though and different crossings. I think the problem might be what to do with the car once in Vancouver.

The WBPC Repo was our very first cruise, so we were not involved in many of the Dis events since we didn't really know what to expect of cruising. We did go to the pyjama breakfast though!
We did not attend most of the big "group" events. So we were not there.
I am thinking we should do a flannel pj breakfast on this cruise. I am over Palo brunch and I am thinking a group breakfast in Tritons would be fun.
PJ
That sounds like fun PJ, but you will have to talk Amy into it. I am over the brunch as an experience, but I am not over the food.

We have three ashore days, one day viewing the glacier and two sea days. One of the port days is a late start DCL has it listed as either 10:30am or 1:30pm ashore time, if it is a 1:30pm ashore I bet they do a Palo brunch like they do in Key West.

What is the best time to go on an Alaskan Cruise?
What are good side trips/land excursions for various ports?
What is the temperature on an Alaska cruise? Is it quite cold, given the glaciers and icebergs?
What will I need to wear on an Alaska cruise? Will I need to pack my winter clothes and a cold weather jacket?
What is the best pre or post cruise tour out of Vancouver?
Where is the best place to view bald eagles in Alaska?
Where is the best place to view bears on other wildlife in Alaska?
I don’t have much extra in my budget for shore excursions (and some run over $300 per person!) What are some fun yet inexpensive things to do while in port?
Is it true that not all cruise ships stop in Glacier Bay National Park? I heard that this was one of the most beautiful spots in Alaska and want to see it.
My favorite cruise line does not stop in glacier Bay. What is a good alternative destination?
What about icebergs? Aren’t they dangerous? Will we see any?

Hi Everyone!
Just thought I'd introduce myself (DH - BigAWL will be along here at some point too). We just transferred our ressie from the transatlantic to this cruise!!!!! DH and I cruised to Alaska before the kiddies, and they are so into nature right now that we thought they'd love the experience too!
So, I hope to get to know all of you very well. We had a fantastic Disgroup on our last cruise and I've definitely become a huge DIS Fan!
A little about us: We are in the Foreign Service and work for the U.S. Embassy in Kampala, Uganda. We have spent the last three years overseas in Africa, first in Burkina Faso (West Africa) and now in Uganda (East Africa). Both I and DH work for the Embassy. DH is originally from Virginia, and I'm a military brat.
We have three little girls: Caitie will be 9, Alex will be 7, and Grace will be 4 on the cruise.
We also have two kitties: Sasha is 13 and Patches is 3. Because we are in Africa, we are taking advantage of the unusual environment to try our hands at raising our own eggs, so I expect our 5 hens to arrive any day now. If anyone has any advice, I'm all ears!
I need to update my ticker because we have transferred our transatlantic cruise to this cruise and we are booked on the Christmas 2010 Magic cruise. Alaska will be our 4th Disney cruise, but DH and I cruised other lines before the girls were born.
Well, that's the main stuff about us.
Hope to hear from you all very soon!

I know that it is too early to book a flight yet but I did glance at the Southwest web site (my favorite airline) last night. :surfweb: Even their fares were right at $500! :scared1: I'm hoping that as we get closer this will change. :headache:

Hi everyone....not sure if you remember me but I stop in and read from time to time to see since you are all heading out the week after if you have anything interesting you have found.
anyway as for the flights....they seem to be that price even when you are as close as I am in San Diego....also same amount of time...anywhere from 5-8.5 hrs. Most are around 6.5....for a flight that should be about 2.5 hrs.
Also over 5 hrs if ya want a flight with one stop that is not 7 hrs long. I have a friend that goes all the time and she said that the price stays the same and for us to expect to pay around $450-$550 each wheter one is traveling from the East or the West....
Wonder if DCL will get a better rate????

Thanks for the info :thumbsup2 although it isn't very comforting! :headache: I had hoped that SWA would have fares a little cheaper even if I had to lock in the date & time early. :confused3 If this is the normal pricing then it will not hurt to wait for awhile. :surfweb:

Well, we've been silent here for a while because we have two cruises planned before this one. Had the Christmas cruise planned for a while. But the Northern Europe cruise was a last minute addition to our plans. We fly for London tonight, and sail on Saturday. Wish us dry weather!

The total number of days between Friday, June 25th, 2010 and Tuesday, July 26th, 2011 is 396 days.
This is equal to exactly 1 year, 1 month, and 1 day.
This does not include the end date, so it's accurate if you're measuring your age in days, or the total days between the start and end date. But if you want the duration of an event that includes both the starting date and the ending date, then it would actually be 397 days.
The total time span from 2010-06-25 to 2011-07-26 is 9,504 hours.
This is equivalent to 570,240 minutes.
You can also convert 396 days to 34,214,400 seconds.

I really want to go back to DL, and also visit some of the off site DVC sites. I think that the TA and Alaska will be a great break from WDW. I know that come 2012 when I want to bring close friends down and do a 2br villa, I will be ready again.
I love the resorts at WDW and would love to do a resort only trip no parks.

PJ, we did enjoy both HH and VB resorts. The VGC are really, really nice also. We are going to stay at WDW for 9 days and only plan 4 or 5 at the parks. We want to enjoy the resorts this trip also. Maybe even get over to GF and see it this time. :thumbsup2

I like this idea also. :thumbsup2 We almost did that this past week when we spent one night at the Boardwalk Villas. Thursday we checked in and walked around the resort, sat at the pool, had dinner at Cape May in the Beach Club Resort and then went swimming at BWV. :cloud9: We didn't go to the MK until the next day.
I think we might do a resort only trip someday but it will be hard to not go once to a park. :confused3

My only experience with a GTY booking, we got our assignment about 3 weeks before the cruise (but we had booked really late). I think I've heard 1 month before is normal.

That sounds about right, they need time to assign, print documents and mail them out around the world. 1 month out is just about the right timing. I have seen 1 off assignments early, but not overall GTY assignments.

Ports of call charge a fee for each passenger. Most Caribbean ports charge like $3 or so ....
Alaska on the other hand charges $50 :sick:
