I sooo wish I could do it, I could get the Coast to Coast medal. But I somehow don't think DH is going to let me go to Cali alone since we have never been to DL before. Plus the cost, as this years trip is costing quite a bit already. But hey, maybe if I win the lottery................:rotfl:

The other thing about the 2010 Half is that it is the 5th year! So, you get a special commemorative medal! :cool1: I am running this to finish the Coast to Coast Challenge.

After this year, I am pretty excited about next year. After talking with my wife, she has decided that she will run in the 5k, while both of our kids will do their respective kids races and I will run the half again. We had a great time and can't wait to do it again.

Thanks

My family stayed at the Ramada Maingate right across the street. I booked the Queen suite back in April when hotels.com had a special for $100/night. It is very convenient to walk to the parks and the start line. While you can tell its an older hotel, they take very good care of the property. I know that Howard Johnson (HoJo) is very popular on the Disboards, too.

Not sure of which airport is the best.

Kimmer, keep an eye out for Jeff's recommendations. He has been to quite a few of those hotels right around DL. RIght now though he picked one with no free internet, so I think that would be a no go for next year. I stayed at the Candy Cane in with Pat and Susie last year and it was a good place.

It is on for sure. If you go to the endurance website and click on the Disneyland Half Marathon, they bring you to the 2010 one and the same with the Princess! :) You just have to complete the two races in the same year that they have listed. http://disneyworldsports.disney.go.com/dwws/en_US/amateurSports/sportDetail/detail2?name=coast2coast2DetailPage

For the 2009 DL 1/2 there were quite a few discount codes for registration. Does that happen every year for the DL 1/2 or was 2009 the exception? I plan on running the 2010 version to complete the coast to coast challenge.

Kimmer - we stay on property - and this year we stayed at Paradise Pier which is the cheapest of the 3 on property. We really enjoyed the location. We walked down to Howard Johnsons, it is a fair walk, but the lobby was really nice. We flew into John Wayne Airport (also called Santa Ana or Orange County), and had no problems there. I would go for whichever one was cheapest. We have used both airports - sorry but I am blanking on the name of the other one.

WE just stayed at HoJo's for 3 nights. Rooms were nice(nothing compared to DVC rooms we usually stay at) but for the price($85 night inc tax) which was great. We stayed 3 nights for lesss than one night at DL Hotel. It was about a mile walk to parks and was just like the walk from Family reunion area to the actual start of Half in Jan.

We plan on staying there again next year!

Kim - That is the Howard Johnson's John & I stayed at. It was just over a half mile to the park entrances & a little over a mile from the half finish. We were able to get the Entertainment Book Rate. Paid $59 a night. We didn't have an Entertainment Book, so bought just the Entertainment Card on Ebay for $3 (including postage). We have no complaints at all. The room was clean & great for what we needed. I would have no problem staying there again.

This will be my first time running the Surf City. In fact, the DL Half was my first long distance race (over 10k). I have heard good and bad things about the race, but the medals are just too cool to pass up. What better way to justify all of the drinking and eating that will occur during the Super Bowl than to burn 1,800 calories (my DL 1/2 calorie burn) first thing in the morning?

Now that I am done with the Disney Princess Half, I am ready to focus on this one after my two week break. Anyone registered for this one? It looks like it should be fun. I am interested in any lessons learned from previous years with the Disneyland Half. The Disney Princess was my first half marathon and so I learned a few things from that like that porta potties are in high demand. Maybe with the temperatures being warmer in September, I will be able to sweat out the water and sports drinks! ;)

How quickly does the DL Half fill up? Does it fill as quickly as the WDW Half does?

Rupert B Puppenstein
03-11-2010, 05:38 PM
Thanks Maura for the link. I have joined that discussion. :) As far as how fast the Disneyland Half fills up, I have heard it is one of the more popular races and being that it falls over Labor Day Weekend, a lot of people participate in it because they have the time off already. Just sign up for it. :cool1: Hal Higdon has 12 week training plans for either walkers or runners. So, there is no excuse!! ANYONE can do this!! :yay: I looked at doing this before the Disney Princess this year - I think it was around April or May and it was already full. So, I wouldn't wait.

The DL 1/2 didn't fill until 7/13/09 last year. That was only 1 1/2 months before the race. The first year it filled fast but doesn't fill fast at all now. It is less than 6 months away and still not even 50% full. I would expect it to take until August this year.

Yes, you get it at the finish line. When you go to the expo, you'll get a wrist band indicating you are going for the C2C. If you don't get the wrist band, then you can talk to runner relations at the expo or whatever they call it. This is how it was done two years ago. I'm assuming this is how it was done last year as well.

I start training officially on 5/17. Working on speed right now. And weight loss, which helps the speed.

A friend of mine is making me up a new training plan-we are thinking I can PR at DL. I am not opposed to that (who would?) but since I have never been to DL, and don't necessarily see me running there again, I want to really enjoy this race. Take photos, character meets etc.

I finally got around to registering. I was planning on racing for a charity, but their communication has been so poor and I was afraid of getting locked out.

The code "DLTS951" is still functional so total cost was $107. I have already registered my kids for their races and I will be registering my wife for the 5k in just a few minutes.

RENThead09

OK, I am officially in. I sent out a challenge to all the managers who work for our SoCal area store, so we will see if any of them step up and join in the fun.

The code still works today, so YAY! :yay: I figured it was a great reason to pre-purchase the pin.

I was at our local Disney Warehouse and found the 2009 DL Half "I did it" pin for like $4, so I got me one of those. They had some from 2008 there as well.

And if anyone is in SoCal and wants to get in a 10K warm-up run on July 24th, let me know. I am thinking about doing one is Cypress that day. It is my Birthday Weekend and I will be at Disneyland, so it seems close enough and good motivation.

Padstack...great call on the Plaza. I usually stay at the Super 8 because it is cheap, but am lookin at the Plaza for Half weekend because the cost is the same and they have adjoining rooms in case my family comes out from Minnesota for it.

Happy running everyone.

The past 2 years, weather's been great. Coastal fog for about 8:30 or so. Then the sun came out, but it wasn't hot. Saturday 5K last year was humid, but okay. But 3 years ago, there was a heat wave and it was hot, even at the start. It's So Cal, so it's kind of hard to predict. If there is no heat wave, then the weather is great. But there are water stops almost every mile and some shade along the way. I would just check the weather before you leave. Hope this helps!

As far as the food at the end of the race, just basic foods, like bagels, bananas, mini-Clif Builder bars and water. There might have been other stuff, but this is what I grabbed.

We did the brunch at Goofy's last year about 11 am and it was fantastic. What better way to end a weekend centering on health than indulging in horrendously unhealthy grub. In fact, I made reservations for us for 11:30 this year.

BTW, the Kids Race is now at 93% for anyone looking to get the little ones running.

As far as the bagels and bananas, perfect! I'll grab a banana or something similar to tide me over until our PS.

I'm not certain if we'll head into the parks this day, so that's another reason I'm thinking of doing a character meal with the kids. We might just hang out by the pool and then hit DTD later in the afternoon/evening.

What was your lesson learned? Very curious since we are planning to skip the parks for the pool, too. Partly because I figure we will be tired, but also because we have Deluxe APs and we would need to buy a block out ticket. We are using our GAD vouchers for entry on Saturday.

Does anyone know if they sweep the 5k with the same 16 min/mile requirement? DH and DD are a bit on the slow side, just wondering how much I have to crack the whip on them to get them moving faster!

kim3339

I don't know about how strict the sweeping is, but I think time doesn't start until the last person has passed the start line. For example if it takes the last person 20 minutes to pass the start line, they have 45 minutes to run the course. And even if they did sweep and you are close to the finish, I would think that they would let you go across.

Yes, they still sweep - I would crack the whip! ;) Not that they will need it. I honestly think the best thing about the races is the motivation it gives you just to have others in front of you...I don't know one person who hasn't done better than usual on race day due to that aspect. So, they should be fine. I know people have been swept but hopefully they won't be in that group.

Do people ever give away their bib at the last minute before race day? My Fiance and I would love to run the Disneyland Half Marathon but we didn't know we would be able to make it until now. The weeks leading up to the Seattle Rock n' Roll half marathon people were dropping out and giving away their spot to other people because the race was full. Is it possible to get in that way? Does anyone know of someone who has a bib or two they can't use? We would love to run at Disneyland together! Thanks!

I don't think it is possible because you have to pick up your bib in person and get your tag. They are very strict about matching you. I guess people could do it, but it may be more worth your while to go to the Race Expo on the last day to see if any spots have opened up. Some people will cancel and are moved to the following race. It can't hurt to call Disney Endurance. I wouldn't anticipate anyone giving their bib away after they take the effort to pick it up in the first place. This is an Anniversary Half so many are here for the special medal. Good Luck!

Hello MrsPinup
Yes, I dressing up. I working on a minnie outfit. My DH won some fabric on ebay and I'm working on a skirt and having a hard time getting how I want it. I have made my gloves and need to work on a bow for my hair. I may buy a minnie ears headband when I get to DL, but I'm really don't like headbands as they pinch behind my ears and give me a headache. So, are you dressing up?

I probably won't dress up much - maybe the ears but I will keep it simple. I can't wait to see what everyone will be wearing because there is so much creativity. I just don't think I could figure out an outfit that would be comfortable to run in.

Is anyone going to run the WDW Marathon after this? I am contemplating it but am trying to figure out if that goal would be a bit too ambitious. Disneyland is going to be my second half this year and I am not sure if the transition to a full would be too much of a shock. Any ideas?

I'm going to run WDW Marathon after this. It'll be my 2nd marathon, 1st being this October. I don't think it's that ambigious. Think of it this way - you've trained for 13.1 so you have a great base to start with. And you know what it takes to run longer distances. There are tons of training programs on the internet so you can find one that works for you.

I am looking at the training programs for Hal Higdon (I do the half marathon one for now). I think I will go for it. My concern will be doing the Princess not too long after that, but it would be cool to have five medals in a year of running! :) I think I will deserve a trip to Fiji after that!

I work in Atlanta and live about 30 miles north so Rome isn't much further north for me - it is a beautiful area. I hope your DD loves it! The traffic is crazy!! Speaking of anniversaries.....

2012 is the 15th anniversary of the Donald (half)

2013 is the 20th anniversary of the Mickey (full)

2015 is the 10th anniversary of the Goofy (both)

My first half was in 2007, the 10th anniversary of the Donald. There was no special medal for that race. That was probably before they (Disney) realized that they could offer a special medal to attract more people (and jack up the prices at the same time).

Shelby, I did my first full in 2008 - a year after my first half. You can do it, you have time to train. Marathon weekend is really a lot of fun. There will be a lot of us in green supporting you around the course - your own fan club. :teeth:

The full would be a little less than a year after my first half. The Hal Higdon plan seems pretty doable. It was a bit daunting to write those mileage amounts in my planner for the specific days. So, I am going to go for it and hopefully can move afterwards. ;) I will try to take it easy (kind of like I did at the Princess) during this race so that I can pick up with my training when I return to Georgia.

I can't wait to see the differences between the Princess, Disneyland Half and the WDW Marathon! Thanks for the encouragement everyone. :goodvibes

Yikes! We are a month out now!! :cool1: I have been focusing on hill training on the treadmill (I know there aren't many hills or inclines with Disney races) because I really love the challenge of it. I can't find anything regarding if this is good to do or not, but if anyone has any tips, please let me know.

I know that there are a lot of veterans with this race, so any last minute tips? Things you wish you focused on a month out? I just hope to be able to finish, be able to walk through the parks afterward, and get on the plane going back without being stiff and sore! ;)

Keep focused on the hils as it will increase speed on your midweek work. Keep your remaining long runs fairly flat. You want to make sure the stabilizer muscles are ready for a constnat pounding from a flat course. The only real incline I remember was coming out of the stretch along the river bed.

Hill training will strengthen your legs, but be carefull not to overdo it. Once a week should be enough. At this point, I only do it once every other week. Other than the hill coming out of the wash, there is a decent hill as you run over the freeway on Ball Road. Really nothing to be too concerned about as the rest of the course is nice and flat.

Thanks Charles! I did a 10 mile run today with no incline and it is amazing how much easier that was after sticking with the hill programs. So, for now on I will do the long runs without the incline and the short runs with it. Still following your fluid intake guidelines and its working like a charm!! Hey Lauren, it depends on the airport but Disney has a shuttle that runs from (at a minimum SNA- Orange County and LAX- Los Angeles) to the resort area hotels. I'm not sure of the cost. There are also local independent shuttles you can pick up SuperShuttle and PrimeTime. Here are some discount coupons for the area if you decide to do a taxi (which I wouldn't necessarily recommend because you'll probably find other cheaper alternatives). And if you're coming with a big group you can probably hire a van for a pretty reasonable rate.

I was looking at the program on the website and it listed Angels Stadium as spectator viewing from 6:45 - 9:20. (Spectator viewing is on page 17 of the program). Don't know if that is along the outside of teh stadium or in. I remember last year there were a ton of people inside the right field entrance. More than there had ever been. So they might have opened it up to spectators in addition to girl/boy scouts.

Has anyone looked at their waivers? I looked at mine and it doesn't have the corral letter this year. Just my bib #. Did anyone get a corral letter on theirs?

They don't give you your corral until you register at the Expo.

As far as transportation from SNA, we are also renting a car. That way, we can see other things outside of the area while there.

Due to the exigencies of parenthood, DH and I have been doing all our training seperately for the last few months. Then we went on vacation over the last couple of weeks with parents and we were able to run together. He was slowing way down, but I was definitely still being pushed to the point of not being able to hold a conversation. We'll have to see how it works the day of the actual race.

You've already gotten several good suggestions, but check out the very first post in theAirport Proximity to DLR and Ground Transportation Information Super Thread (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2318297). It's chock full of information!

They don't give you your corral until you register at the Expo.

I'm a little nervous that my DH and I are going to end up in the very last corral because of the anticipated finish time I gave way back in February when we signed up. I'm still not real speedy, but whereas I was anticipating running over fifteen minute miles when I started, I'm now somewhere between thirteen and fourteen minute mile on my long runs. DH is pretty much under ten minute/mile, but says he's going to run with me. Not a big deal, except that if they start the pacing requirement off the last person to cross the finish line and anything happens along the way to hinder my progress, I still worry about keeping that overall pace.

The other part that still makes me a little nervous is the Hal Higdon Novice Plan I'm following and the fact that I only do a ten mile long run prior to the Half. I just did the seven mile on Sunday with no problem, but I have to almost double that just four more weeks! I know Higdon says inspiration will carry me the last three miles, I'm just hoping the inspiration doesn't get squashed by a nervous stomach.

Stephanie, don't worry about the long runs. If you can do 10, you can do the 13.1. With my previous training plan, my longest run was 11 and I don't remember even doing the 10 or 11 before the WDW half in January (I did them for the half I did last Sept though).

4 weeks from now I will be in California!!!:cool1:

I did the Hal Higdon Half Program for the Princess and am also doing it this time around. Believe me, those extra 3 miles aren't a big deal and you will keep your pacing. The only thing most of us never account for is the competition. Regardless of what corral you are in (and for what it is worth, I would always prefer to be in the last two because there is less pressure and more inspirational people surrounding you - first timers, etc.), people thin out and I had really expected to run shoulder to shoulder with people like I was waiting with in the corral. Didn't happen that way - not even close. So many people gun it in the beginning which every running program tells you not to, so those people are ahead for a while, wear themselves out possibly and somehow you make it past them. The only concern I ever had and mentioned in previous posts was with groups. Everyone felt the need to walk together and take up the entire road rather than moving to the side to let others pass. So, sometimes you have to gun it past the slower runners. If you and your husband are at different paces, and are okay running separately, then I would go for it. That is the one reason I don't run in a team - because I don't want to worry about the other people in group. Maybe it makes me selfish, but I want to accomplish finishing a race by myself.

The thing I learned from the Princess was to not sweat everything. I am a big planner so I wanted to make sure I was in the right corral, at the right pace, etc. But, I found that I wasn't enjoying the race as much as I should have - I was at Disney after all?!? :cool1: Once, I just let that go and just pushed myself, focused on the surroundings and staying away from the 16 minute threshold, I truly enjoyed the experience. But, it took about five miles to get to that point...

This could easily be me, so this is very good advice. I'm going to let it go, start off nice and slow (which is how I always do best), let DH run with me if he wants, but not feel pushed to keep up with him if he's running faster than I want, and just enjoy my surroundings!

Not to worry, we did that plan for our first race, the Princess 1/2, and it worked great. There's so much energy out on the course and people on the sidelines cheering you on, the last three miles flew by. DH and I run together and he's faster than I am. He loses interest on his long runs though so likes to stick with me as apparently I entertain him by my looping of imaginary rubber bands around people and then catching up to them and then the pretending to be the Tour de France sports commentators and commenting on how we're doing, then I start going crazy and trying to bribe him to leave the course and buy me a Coke, which never seems to work! Whatever it takes to pass the miles though, right! :rotfl: We are around about a 14 minute mile or so depending on how we're doing with potty breaks and photo breaks, etc. If your DH wants to go on, you can certainly hang back with us. I'll give you a million dollars to go buy me a Coke! ;)

For those of you worried about the pacing. Dont forget about the pace groups. Last year I went with one for the 2:15 time and actually felt good enough that I kicked it the last 2 miles a little and finished at 2:11. Definitely something to consider. They encourage walking through the water stops and keeping a nice consistent pace.

Most importantly, Have fun!!!! Cant wait for it to get here. Wooo Hooo!

I'll give you a million dollars to go buy me a Coke! ;)

:lmao::rotfl2::lmao: I so want to run near you! We'll send both DHs off to get the Diet Cokes!!!

didn't want to start a new thread so ...

Do you bring your WDW medal with you to the the DL 1/2?

What do you do with your WDW medal while racing? Should I put it in my check bag? And then how would I get it to take a photo at the little back drop thing that ASI does?

kim3339
08-14-2010, 05:11 PM
Are you talking about for getting the Coast to Coast Medal? If yes, then you don't need to bring your WDW Medal. When you check in to get your bib for the 1/2, there is a booth to the right, if it's the same as last year, to check in for the CTC. They have a list of people who qualify and they give you a wrist band to wear. After you cross the DL finish line, you get you 1/2 medal and then you get your CTC medal and race people will cut off your wrist band. If you want to take a finsh line picture with all 3 medals you can bring your other medal (If you put it in your gear check bag it should be fine), but you don't need to bring it.

Thanks Kim3339, I knew about the wrist band, but I wondered about the photo op and you helped.

I got some green mickey heads at Home depot and was going to attach (glue?) them to my bib number-maybe in the corner to ID myself as a wisher. I'm wearing a "minnie" outfit. I finished the skirt today and have a couple of things to do to finish the outfit.

My bolding. I have a question about this....

I can't remember how Disneyland is set up but at the Rock n Roll races, you go out of the finishers area to get your checked bag. Once out of the area, you cannot go back in. It's inside the finishers area that you get your picture made. Can you get to your checked bag at DL and then have your picture made? I just can't remember. I had thought about bringing my Goofy medal but I'll probably just leave it at home.

I was planning on bringing my WDW medal for the photo op. At WDW, the bag check was right near the area where the backdrops were for the photos. I am sure someone will know the answer!

My coach also suggested that I print out my finishers certificate from WDW just in case.

Is anyone making shirts to wear around the park on Saturday? My friend and I wanted to make them for her and I, and then some for our supporters. We were trying to come up with something cute to say, but everything we think of is so long. We had, "Disneyland Half 1st Timers" (sounds so blah!) and for our supporters: "I'm supporting _____". Normally I am so creative, but I cannot think of anything. Can anyone help :) We are first time half marathon runners and both huge Disney fans. TIA!

Are reading the posts, I think the bag check is after the picture taking. But, it is right next to it. Maybe you might be able to get your bag and go out the front, the way you came in, to go take your photo. I'm sure if someone questioned you and you explained it, they wouldn't give you a hard time. Plus, the front half of the bag check is still technically in the runner area, so if you just go back out the front you aren't breaking any rules.:goodvibes Good luck with the photos!

"13.1 magical miles" in a slightly smaller font.

Try adding Tink or some other character that you like :)

Hello everyone, I posted this in another Disneyland Half Marathon thread a few days ago, but wanted to ask here too just in case...if anyone registered, or knows someone who registered, for the 5k on saturday 9/4 and will not be running, I'm willing to help you recoup your registration expenses! I'd love to run it, but will not be getting into the airport (SNA) until around 7:30 on Friday so would not make it to the Expo in time. If you are interested in selling your bib, d-tag, t-shirt, etc. and can pick up everything on Friday at the Expo, I'd be happy to meet you Friday night to purchase just as soon as I can get off the plane and get my bags...I'd even meet you in your Anaheim-area hotel lobby if that's the most convenient for you! If this happens to fit anyone's needs, please let me know! Thanks! :flower3:

Good question. :thumbsup2

I would also like to know if there are photopass people along the race route or are there CM's with the characters that I can hand my camera to to take my pic with a character. Will there be lots of people waiting for pics that maybe I should just keep running by?

jbucci
08-25-2010, 04:38 PM
From what I can remember the characters are mainly in the parks. There are "handlers" with the characters willing to take you picture but no photopass people. The "boring" stretches have some bands, cheerleaders and dance groups for entertainment but not too many photo ops

mkymsehi
08-25-2010, 04:39 PM
Characters will only be at the start of the race, in the parks, and the finish line.

No photopass photographers film the race, only ASI photography. Hand your personal camera to a cast member for taking your picture with any characters.

Running from DL to the Duck Pond, there will be cheerleaders, marching bands, Mariachi bands and dancers, hula dancers, etc. Every few blocks or so.

Girls, Cubs, and Boy Scouts inside Angels stadium in the stands. Then more high school organizations heading back to CA Adventure.

I like the spibelt. They could be at the expo selling them. I have run ahalf with one and love it.

I make a minnie skirt with side pockets and velco to keep stuff in...hope it works. I won't have a problem wearing it for the race, but I just can't bring myself to do a practice run with it on in my neighborhood.

I actually have a SPIbelt. I use it to hold my iPhone while I run. I'm not sure if much else would fit in there with my iPhone. But then again I'm not sure what else I would need to carry. I may just use it for my camera and leave my phone in the hotel room.

I have the Nike Running shirt with the pockets in the back. I carry my iPhone, my headset goes through the loop in the back, and I carry two Gu Roctane Gels. Nothing else. My family won't forget me so they can worry about the hotel room key, tickets, etc. After all, the majority of them will be sleeping in and meeting me after the race so they owe me big! ;) I looked at those Spi Belts at the Princess Expo - they were selling like hotcakes but ultimately decided against them. I got a fanny pack at WDW but then didn't use that either. It ended being fine not carrying a lot of stuff. I didn't even check anything. I had my hat at the Princess Half but am debating whether or not to wear one this time around. I am not going to wear sunglasses so maybe the hat would be a good idea.

I can't believe it is almost time!!

I wear my Race Ready shorts with the multiple mesh pockets along the back AND my spi belt. I will keep my 5 oz bottles of Cytomax in the shorts and my camera in the spi belt (I usually have my phone in it when I am training). No need for the phone, since we are staying at DL Hotel and I can get back there pretty easily.

Leave one week from tomorrow!!!

I have a belt with small pouches to carry my cell phone, small camera, so shot blocks and jelly beans, it has a water bottle pocket, I always carry my own water bottle, cannot chug water, I need to sip it, I have it filled up at water stops when I get low, and that seems to work fine.

I am going to try running with my camera in my SPIbelt tonight and practice taking it in and out and taking pictures while I'm running. I know, I'm such a dork but I don't want to try it for the first time during the race. :rotfl:

I've been checking accuweather and it looks good to me, but then I've been getting up at 5am to do long run and it has be 75 and 95% humidity.

At the Princess I had my camera in my spibelt for the first 3 miles and then took it out and held it for the next 10 miles. A wrist strap is useful too.

He and Minnie will be at the start up on the stage (left side).

At the finish line, they'll be there, but getting a picture with them is tough. Runners and walkers are told to keep moving through to the medal pick up.

Last year I was able to get pictures with mickey and minnie in both DCA and Disneyland. It was easier here than at WDW in my opinion. Disneyland also had a number of other lesser seen characters out the day of the half. All the characters also played and interacted with the medal and really made a big deal about it. Which was really cool.
