We are going on the South Africa Signature trip 9/13 to celebrate my 40th birthday! It will be me, my husband and our 9 year old daughter. Anybody else going? I have enjoyed reading the posts about past trips. I am a little stressed about the weight limit - but VERY excited!!

Thanks - we are excited! I think my little one is going to be the only child - so that will be interesting. She should be fine - she is used to being around adults - her older siblings are 17 & 19. I hope they still do the Jr Adventurer activities for her. We went on the Austria trip in 2007 with her and our son. It was great!! There is actually a pic of her in the ABD brochure:)

Jonl,

I think half the folks here have already seen more of your family than you know. I've posted the link to our Austria trip pics many times! :)

There was only 1 "true" jr adventurer on our trip - although there were also several teens. It seems like they did all of the jr adventurer activities - the teens and even the parents participated some of the time.

You will have an amazing time. It was such a great trip. The pictures we have are awesome!! Do you know who your guides are? If it is Tina and/or Craig - say hi from the Peterson family!

The only time that the weight limits were super strict was going from George to Hoedspruitt and then from Hoedspruitt to Johannesburg. But, you can also have carryon luggage for these 2 flights. The guides have luggage scales that you can use too.

Have a great trip!!

Tina is in Italy now. So the guide won't be Tina.

Thank you so much for your help! Being so far from home I want to be prepared and make the best of our trip!

Any ideas on what type of clothes to pack? More casual - or how many "nice" clothes do we need.

It also looked like ya'll were able to do your trip reports on your trip - so internet access is available? The office is a little stressed I am going to be gone for 2 weeks - I'm pretty excited - but know none of my work will be done while I'm gone:)

Thanks, again - I have loved looking at everyone's pics and reading their reports!!

Dottie - I need to see those pics - I have plenty of pics of your family, too:)

I was hoping she would've been there. I think she was our guide in Austria. But I am sure everyone will be great!!

Enjoy! It was a fun trip with your family!

It's funny... this was two years ago and the three girls (the two sisters and their cousin?) just emailed my son, Pete, today!

All casual clothes are fine. I brought one nice pair of slacks and wore them, but they were not necessary. It was pretty cold in late June, but the next trip had better weather than we did. Pack a mix of short and long sleeves with a bunch of layers. You don't need too much. Have a great time.

One more question - sorry if I am being a pest. A little stressed go so far from home:)

Did you get any special shots or take any health precautions with you?

My husband and I got the HepA/HepB shots. Our kids already had already had them. About half of the people on our trip took typhoid and malaria medicine and about half didn't. You can check with a travel physician in your town to see what they recommend. Our county health department has a travel clinic.

Not a pest at all! Ask away . . .

We did pretty much the same as kidcoos. Hep A and B. We did take the typhoid meds before we went too. We brought the malaria meds, but ended up not taking them since it was winter and it was a very low malarial area.
You need to talk to a travel med specialist.
