I really want to rent a car for our September/October trip to WDW. We have rented one for our last two trips and I admit now I am spoiled! We are splurging a bit and staying at the AKL for the first time and because of it's distance from the parks, Downtown Disney etc..we would love to have a car. But the rates are so high! We paid $134 (intermediate, National Emerald Aisle) in May 2002 and $90 (compact, National Counter) in December 2001. This includes all taxes and fees. The current prices at National and Dollar, including all discounts codes, range from $154 (compact at Dollar) to $197 (intermediate at National) for September 27-Oct. 2nd.

I would make a reservation, you can always cancel it, and keep watching the prices. I've found they usually go down at the end of summer, I'm not sure if it will be soon enough for your trip. I made a reservation in October last year for December, I paid $115 with National, full size EA with DC discounts.

Last year the prices started dropping in later august and we had a really good deal, for last september. We used national, I hope to get a better deal for this october presently 190 / wk. Just keep trying and watch the boards, they will change
