My son (9) is a bit leary-ok alot leary about stingray city- he is afraid he will get stung. This kids loves to snorkle so I am a bit surprised. I want to assure him no one gets stung but don't want to lie. So has anyone heard of people getting stung? Is it serious if you are? Ann

AnnMorin,
We just got back on Saturday from the western and did stingray city with Capt. Marvins. The only way you will get stung is if you step directly on a little barb that is halfway up the tail. Our captain just told us keep our feet at one spot which was difficult with the movement of the waves. I just kept an eye on the bottom as I was moving around. This is a wonderful excursion...both of our kids, 16 and 12, loved it! They even got a stingray hug...you'll have to ask your captain to help out with this!

We did the Disney excursion, and the stingrays were as tame as puppies!! We were told that the chances of getting stung were almost zero, and I believe it. Our guide picked them up for photos and even held them on our heads, and they never tried to sting. I think they would only do it if they were really startled or hurt. If it happens, it would require medical attention to clean out the wound, much as cutting yourself on coral would. They don't emit poison at all.
