View Full Version : Kevin is home from surgery

Hey Gang
We are finally home from surgery - this was a long day indeed.
The doctor seems to think it went well and his retina will attach normally. We will know more when we see him tomorrow.
Now comes the worst part - recovery.
I'm not sure if Kevin mentioned this is in his post but this is the other eye - so that makes to detached retinas on two eyes. He doesn't see well out of the first one so he is not going to be able to do much for a long time.
Thanks for all your prayers and pixie dust. They are appreciated and I know affective. Keep 'em coming - we'll need more for the recovery period.
John

Hi Folks.....
I am just stopping by to tell you how much I appreciate the good wishes.
I dont know if it's because I'm experienced or not...but this surgery seemed easier. I'm not nauseous and sick this time. I still have to do the horrible recovery thing.....but we all face stuff we dont want to face from time to time.
I'm going to be ok. It will take time.....but I'll be better and back in no time.
I've said it before....but I am the luckiest guy in the whole world.
John has been an angel here on earth. I cant imagine anyone taking better care of me.
He seems to sense what I need and even understands the frustrations that come along with this.
I dont knw how else to say it but to repeat that I am the luckiest guy in the world.
I just wanted to let you all know that your prayers, pixie dust and good thoughts have worked again.
I've said this alot lately....but I am grateful beyond words. Thank you all for watching over me.

Wonderful. I always tell people having surgery that your eyes are like your kids. You do the same thing for each of them, but that doesn't mean they come out the same way. You probably just had a rough go last time, and this time things are going more smoothly. (Pressure low, etc.)
Yeah, you'll be fine. (Especially with John right there next to you.)
It's hard keeping your chin up with your face down, but you're a pro at this.

I've been working on a deadline and forbade myself to get on the boards the last few days, so I just found out! Kevin, I'm so sorry! And John the Angel Genius, I'm sure that you've been doing a fabulous job. Kevin sounds like he's holding up beautifully in your care. We, your loving fans, are very happy that things seem to be going so well. You must tell us what you need for recovery! Food? Chocolate? Kindle Gift Certificates? I worry that Pixie Dust might get in your eye. I'm an RN - I worry about such things. Please be very careful with the Pixie Dust!
We love you both!! Take good care,
Jenni

Oh that's a great point Jenni! Pixie Dust might be bad for this situation.
Kevin, I am so glad to see you post so quickly. I can't imagine what the recovery process is like, but I know the feel of eyelashes on contacts. So, I am multiplying that times 10 thinking that is probably close to your discomfort and frustration. And since you probably shouldn't have pixie dust, John should go outside for a moment so we can throw some his way.

Ummm... ok wait a minute... I just re-read what I posted and it is coming out wrong... Kevin, I didn't mean to say you didn't have good taste!! Hi folks...
Just stopping in to let y'all know I'm doing ok.
I'm supposed to be face down for 55 out every 60 minutes.
I'm sure my eye DR would be thrilled to know that like any good dieter, I have learned to work the system.
If I am allowed two cookies each day...and I didnt have two yesterday.....and I dont have two tomorrow....I can have 6 today. :rotfl2:
Bringing that analogy around to retina recovery....if I lay down for 6 hours that gives me 30 minutes of "saved" time to read the Dis.
I'm not sure it works that way....but I have counted the threads per square inch (we have good sheets apparently), I have studied the berber carpeting, the dogs are way over entertaining me, I have realized the baseboards need painting and I have come to the realization that nothing exciting hppens below knee level.
Only a couple more days and I can look up again.
"See" y'all soon.

DANG! Just surfing in to check up on the podcast and saw the news! :scared1: :sad2:
Do what the Doc says. My DW has Glaucoma which is an older person disease but she is young and she should not have the problem. The type of Glaucoma she has is even rarer regardless of age. :sad2: We have had many many procedures on her eyes. Not fun but she still has vision so we are thankful.
Take Care. SOMEHOW stay busy. Today's badness will pass for goodness tomorrow.

Hi Folks...
The hateful "lay face down" phase is over.
Hip Hip Hooray!!!!!!
Challer said something several pages ago....or in another thread, something about your eyes being like children. You can treat them both the same and they may still react differently.
He's a vey smart guy.
This is a very different experience than the last time. There are different circumstances with this eye. It has not had as much trauma, it has had longr to heal before this happened etc......but this is still very different.
The last time, it was like looking through the deepest, murkiest water you could imagine. It was weeks before I could even see movement out of my left eye.
This time, it's like I'm looking through crystal clear Caribbean water. It's still like looking through water....but it's entirely different.
I have quite a ways to go in my recovery....and it looks like there might be other surgeries down the road......but I am on my way.
I have to say THANK YOU yet again for the prayres, good thoughts, pixie dust and concern. I am a firm believer that y'all have helped yet again.
I also have to say THANK YOU again to John. I will spend the rest of my life trying to find ways to show my love and appreciation. I have no idea where I would be or what I might have done if it were not for him.
He has taken on not only my recovery but has taken on all responsibility for helping out my Mom.
He's done it with grace and good humor and made us both feel that it's ok to lean on him. And we have.
I have to say that I am blessed to have this kind of love and support and not an hour goes by that I am not reminded of how utterly lucky I am and how grateful I need to be.
Thank you all for thinking about me and worrying about me and wishing me well.
You have yet again shown me the power of this community.
It's staggering and I love y'all for it.

Kevin,
Never went to a meet but I feel I know you guys. I started listening to the podcast a few months before Bob passed away and what struck me then and now is that the podcast crew and this community are real. When someone hurts, feels pain or asks for help (unfortunately occurring a lot lately) others are there for them. Same goes for cheering celebrations (let’s hope for more of those). Glad you are on the mend and get well soon. Tell John he can add saint along with his genius moniker.
Oh, the new DIS conspiracy board believes you had the surgery to further postpone picking the co-restaurant reviewer. Sorry, since things are going better this time, I felt I could pull your leg. Hope you chuckled a bit. If not, you can tell Pete to hang up on me if I ever call in on a live show.

Kevin,
I am so happy to hear you are on your way to recovery. Continued thoughts are headed your way for a speedy recovery. Not that there was ever any doubt that you were in good hands, but hugs for John for taking such wonderful care of you and your mom.

Kevin--- We are happy to see that you are doing better now.
You have under 6 weeks to decide if you want to join us for T-Rex or another treat.

Great to hear you're making progress Kevin. We all knew John the "Genius" was also John the "compassionate caregiver".
Take care guys.

Sorry I've been out of the loop. I'm on vacation, disboarding from Seattle.
Kevin - wonderful news. Still praying for your successful healing.
I'm sure once the gas bubble is completely gone, the "looking through water" feeling will pass. I don't know if you had a macular detachment along with your retina, but that will also determine how quickly and smoothly your vision returns.
Keep the updates coming. I'll be checking the boards more regularly once I get home from the Pacific Northwest.
And I agree that a strong support system is the key to success, and you have it in John and in the community here.
Lucky guy.

Kevin,
I am so relieved your recovery is going well. Your post was very touching. In great times, it is easy to take for granted a relationship. When one is ill, a relationship is truly tested. We all knew John would once again rise to the occasion. He's a keeper! ;)
:tinker: Sending lots of pixie dust your way! With DISers on your side, anything is possible. :grouphug:
Warmest Regards,
Jennifer
