We go in through Niagara Falls - find the bridge there much quicker going in and back.
We usually stay at the Hotel Indigo - it's new and clean, spacious rooms and the staff there are wonderful.
For shopping we go to the Prime Outlets and either the Galleria Mall (which is huge) or if we want something smaller we go to the Boulevard Mall.

We stayed at this Comfort Inn last week.

Newly renovated last year, indoor pool, free light breakfast. Reasonable rates.
5 minutes to the Galleria. While we didn't drive downtown, suspect it would be 5-10 minutes on 190.

I wouldn't stay in Downtown Buffalo but it's easy enough to drive in and park. There are several lots right at the rink and parking is cheap (compared to TO). If you plan to do some shopping you could stay around the Galleria Mall and it is only about 7 miles to the rink. We have stayed at the Hampton Inn which is very nice and has a free breakfast and the Millenium which you can walk to the mall from it (on their website there are specials for Canadians). Other than the mall there are plenty of restaurants (Olive Garden!) and shopping (Target, Marshalls) in the area. Have fun..Buffal is a great rink to see a game!
