Today, weirdly, was the day I had been looking forward to the most - driving from Chicago to Louisville. We were up at 6:40 and after checking out we were on the road by 8:30. We made our way out of Chicago and by 8:55 we were in our second State of this trip - Indiana.

As we turned South onto Interstate 65 the industrial areas gave way to green fields and trees with just the odd town to break the scenery up. As it was Saturday there was little traffic and no delays and at 10:20 we made a short comfort stop before continuing on our way.

At 11:20 we reached roughly half-way and pulled off the Interstate and stopped off at Subway for lunch where I had a Subway melt on flatbread and Dad had an Italian BMT on flatbread. After eating we stopped off across the road to top up the petrol tank and I was surprised that the petrol pump accepted my credit card without asking for a zip code as I know some people have had problems with that in Orlando.

We were back on the road at 1:30 (we had crossed into the Eastern time zone at some point, Chicago being on Central time) and continued on down the I65 towards Louisville. The skies had been alternating between heavy clouds and sunshine all the way but we had been lucky until about 30 miles out of Louisville when our luck ran out and the Heavens opened. Visibility was terrible, lightning was flashing all around us, there were leaves and twigs/small branches all over the carriageway and we were down to 30mph in a 70mph limit, with some people even pulling over onto the hard shoulder to wait the storm out. I soldiered on and by the time we reached Louisville things had got a lot better. Somewhere along the way we had passed into another new State - Kentucky - but with the weather the way it was I missed the State line.

We arrived at the Hyatt Regency at 3:30 where we valet parked, got checked in and were assigned room 1121 on the 11th floor.

This is the main atrium

We had a short rest before going out for a quick walk and then back to the hotel bar where we had a pint of Miller Lite each. We then went out to Fourth Street, which is a pedestrianised area near the hotel with restaurants and clubs, where we went into J. Gumbo and had a bowl of red beans and rice with a root beer each. Once we had eaten we went back to the room where we relaxed for a while before going down to the bar just after 8:00 where Dad had a Margarita and I had a Kentucky Heaven (Maker’s Mark Bourbon, Southern Comfort and peach schnapps).

We were back in the room at 9:15 and in bed by 10:00 ready for another long drive tomorrow.

Today’s Disney reference (it’s a bit tenuous but see what ‘Springs’ to mind).

Well done on driving through the storm.

It was pretty nerve-wracking but the only place to stop was under trees on the hard shoulder so I was worried we would either have a branch fall on us, or get hit from behind so I thought carrying on was the best of two bad options.

Racking up the States David, well done for battling through the storm, must have been a bit intimidating especially with the obstacles being thrown in for extra 'excitement'!

:rotfl: He was awake, just, but he was watching TV. He did offer to move but I told him not to bother.

No, the valet there was only $20.

David,
I stayed at the Hyatt fifteen years ago when I was in Louisville for a literacy conference. My question is, are they still smoking everywhere in Louisville? My strongest memory of the hotel and the restaurants where we ate was the smoking. Oklahoma and most of America had by that time already banned smoking in public places or at least confined smokers to a closed off designated area. But boy, not defiant Louisville. In the heart of tobacco country people everywhere we went--even elevators--smoked like it was their patriotic duty. Other than that, I remember it seeming like a charming old (by American history count) city.

No, they seem to have cleaned up their act now Susan. I can't say that I noticed anybody smoking anywhere around the hotel now you come to mention it.

Road trips are always exciting and you must definitely be ticking off all the states you have visited by now.

I definitely liked what 'sprung' to mind :lmao:

Glad you made it OK through the storm, I always think they're much bigger and scarier in the US than over here
