Hello everyone! Let me take this time to introduce myself. I am Christian, and travelling with me is my DW Elaine, DD9, and DS7. We are from Eastern Connecticut. We are getting totally psyched for our upcoming cruise with a great group of people that we have been talking to for exactly a year now.

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g111/captchris74/Cruise%202006/CruiseVacation2006085.jpg

This is going to be our 3rd cruise overall and our 2nd time with DCL. Both of our previous cruises have been to the Western Caribbean, so we are very excited to be going to the Eastern Caribbean this time around.

Our previous cruises were...

7 Day Western Caribbean from Tampa and RCCL Nordic Empress aka Empress of the Seas. Intinerary was, Tampa, Grand Cayman, Belize, and Cozumel. We never made it to Belize due to a medical evacuation on our sea day between Grand Cayman and Belize. It was a great first cruise and the price was right! :thumbsup2 3/20/04-3/27/2004
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g111/captchris74/Cruise%20Pics%202004/NordicEmpressatNight-1.jpg

7 Day Western Caribbean from Port Canaveral on DCL Magic. Itinerary was Port Canaveral, Key West, Grand Cayman, Cozumel, and Castaway Cay. This cruise was the first with Disney and the first with our extended family. My parents and sister joined us. I became hooked on DCL! 9/9/2006-9/16/2006
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g111/captchris74/Cruise%202006/CruiseVacation2006128-1.jpg

We had kicked around the idea about taking another cruise in 2009, but money was a little tight. Last June (2008), my parents and sister gave us an offer we pretty much couldn't refuse. We decided to join them on their upcoming falll 2009 cruise. There had been a few dates kicked around, but nothing was booked, but we were convinced and comitted to doing the cruise. At first we were looking at a September date, I honestly can't remember which one. :confused3 Then we settled on the 10/10 sailing. My dad checked his calendar further, and realized that the 10/24 sailing would work better, and if I remember right, it was slightly cheaper. Hey that works right!?!?! :cool1:
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g111/captchris74/Cruise%202006/CruiseVacation2006192.jpg

Well my sister, who lurks on the board tells me after the decision was made that the cruise meet thread for the 10/24 cruise was among the most active cruise meet threads she had ever seen. I said to her, "should I jump on and say we are going?" She encouraged me and I immediately joined i believe it was Thread #9 and say that we were going. I was immediately welcomed by some of the regulars and added to the first page "cast of characters" list. This was a year ago this week. I was officially a BOBer, a member of the Bash on the Boat!

After a quick week of vacation to the Delmarva, we returned back and booked our cruise through DU, and was able to get a Category 11 on Deck 7 midship. I was satisfied with this location as it is very convenient to all of the excitement on Deck 9, and the lower mid decks.

For the next few months, I spent a lot of time on the DIS getting to know the other BOBers. We talked about the cruise and life in general, it was a great time. Here is an example of me getting to know the fellow BOBers while being...ahem at work!
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g111/captchris74/utf-8BYXR3b3JrMS5qcGc.jpg

Before we knew it flights were opening up, and people were sharing their various successes and failures at scoring ideal flight times.

Another thing we were looking to do is Mickey's Not so Scary Halloween Party. We will be disembarking the Magic on Halloween night so we thought it might be nice to swing over to WDW and get our MK fix in. My parents haven't been to WDW since 1996, so they are excited to ride all of their favorite rides and spend that time with their only grandchildren.

More planning to come...

It's funny Mike. Last night she was trying on dresses and I was thinking of you. She isn't too sure on the red dress, but my guess is it will be coming. In fact, she said, "i don't think I will wear the red dress." I said, "Aww, Mike will be disappointed!" :lmao:

We are looking forward to meeting you as well. :thumbsup2

Living in New England we have a luxury when it comes to airports. Within 90 miles of our house we have 3 decent airports.

Bradley International (suburban Hartford) 45 minutes away
TF Green Airport (suburban Providence) 45 minutes away
Boston Logan (In Boston) 90 miles--travel time depends on time of day

We are also a reasonable distance from the following...

Westchester County, NY 120 miles
New York LaGuardia 135 miles
New York Kennedy 145 miles or so
Newark Liberty 145 miles or so

When I look for airfare I beome an OCD poster child. I literally check everyday. I look for the deals, I look at flight times and yes, I even look for aircraft types!

For our last cruise we were initally planning on driving to save money, but checking the airfares daily paid off and I was able to get roundtrip non-stop flights from Bradley on Southwest Airlines for $122 per person round trip. This was my first time ever flying Southwest and I thought it was a nice experience. Considering the price of gasoline, it was cheaper to fly than drive our Toyota Sienna Minivan to Florida! This was a steal to say the least!

A couple of pictures...if you like planes

First our ride to Florida.. N418WN

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g111/captchris74/Cruise%202006/CruiseVacation2006006.jpg

I started doing preliminary checks for airfare shortly after booking our cruise last August. I was using 2008 numbers to get an overall feel for what the market would look like. I was very concerned with the price of oil and what effect that would have on airline tickets. I didn't like what I was seeing early on.

In February, while doing my occasional around the horn airport price checks on expedia, I came across direct flights from Bradley on Delta for $188 each. I was tempted to buy them then and there, but was nervous about possibly having a job transfer in June. My career moves me on average of every 5 years, and I was currently at 4, so it was possible that I could move out of state or even out of the region. I didn't think I would be, but was hesitant to take a chance of $800 of non refundable airfare! A few days later, that same flight was priced at $390/per person. To say that I was kicking myself would be an understatement...oh and by the way, I didn't get transferred!

One evening in March my sister called and told me they had booked their airfare from Portland, Maine. They booked one way on JetBlue to Florida, and then return flights on AirTran back home, both Direct flights for $220 per person.

I started my around the horn searching. I saw that nothing from Hartford was cheaper than $390, direct, connecting, all of it was pricey. From Providence, the price was $235 per person with a connection in Cincinnati, Ohio, but the departure time was 5:30 am!!:scared1: Boston was showing airfare at $218, for direct flights, but with a 6:50 am deparature. I checked Westchester, NY, and there was very reasonable airfare from there, $160 roundtrip, but due to that catering primarily to corporate aviation, there is virtually no parking. That scared me.

My frustration primarily was flight times. If I flew from either Providence or Boston, I would have to leave at an ungodly hour, sleep in a hotel, or both. That would add significant additional cost. I also had concerns about the return flights to those airports. We are planning to go to MNSSHP on 10/31, so we will be at the MK until midnight or so. I didn't want an early morning flight! The return flights to Boston or Providence were either early morning or late at night. I didn't want to do early morning due to being at the parks so late and as much as I would like a later flight to enjoy another day in the parks, we just couldn't swing it this trip. I came close to purchasing the Providence airfare with its early departures on both ends, but my sister chimed in and said, "Chris, why don't you fly with us?"

As I thought of it, it made a lot of sense.

The flight times are perfect! 1:55PM departure 5:07 arrival--Direct flight!
10:30 departure from MCO, 1:30 arrival at Portland, Maine

That is so much less stress then those earlier flights, and get this, they are cheaper!!!

My parents live 5 minutes from the airport in Portland so we will have free parking at their house, and free lodging the night before we fly out. It will only cost us a tank of gas which is a lot less than a night at an airport hotel and 10 days of parking!

I remember the night like it was last night. Elaine was next door getting her hair highlighted. I ran to our neighbors house and laid it out for her. She was happy with her hair, so I could have asked her to fly to the moon and she probably would have agreed!

I went home and booked the airfare. One less thing to worry about! :thumbsup2 I always feel like the cruise or vacation is always happening for sure when I buy the airfare. I always buy non refundable so its vacation or bust!

So yes, we are driving north 190 miles, to fly south, but it all works out.

We will be flying direct to Florida on a JetBlue Embraer E-190 and returning home on an AirTran Boeing 717. I have never flown on either airline or aircraft so I am excited. We will sleep in, have a lunch at the house then head to the airport.

The vacation is shaping up like this...

10/22--Pick Kids up at school at 3:15 and drive to Maine. Arrive around 6:00 PM
10/23--Fly to Florida--1:55 Depart PWM 5:07 Arrive MCO

I joined the DIS in February 2005 just after our last WDW vacation. At that time we were considering joining my family on their 9/2006 7 day cruise. We weren't committed, but I joined nonetheless and read on a very rare occasion. I have always been a Disney nut and have enjoyed all of my trips to the World. For several years I read other Disney boards such as wdwmagic, and I think the other was the disneyecho. Once I joined the DIS though, I was hooked as it seemed so much larger and more comprehensive than the others.

Over Labor Day weekend 2005, my family came to visit and my sister encouraged Elaine and I to join them for their cruise a year later. Elaine and I did some number crunching and although it would be tight, we were able to do it. We booked a Category 10 on Deck 7 a week later and were set to sail.

My sister encouraged me to read up on all things DCL on the DCL section of the DIS. Shortly after I became a regular reader/lurker, I came across Timon's (Cass and Rob's) 2005 WDW, Universal, Sea World and DCL live Trip Report. This was amazing and they even had the Captain on the Magic see them in the hall and asked how many views they were up to!

After a while, I posted on the DIS, ocassionally asking a few questions. As the cruise got closer, I believe I was up to 500 or so posts. While I posted on our cruise meet thread, there wasn't too many activities, or pictures exchanged. I didn't do any DIS meets or make any effort to meet and DISers on our 2006 cruise. I remember people saying, "look for the group by the Mickey Pool on sailaway day." Well I did, and there were a few groups! I am not the type to just walk up and say, "eh, so are you guys DISers?"

When we fiinally settled on the 10/24 cruise, I was home for lunch and my sister called me and said, "Chris you got to check out our cruise meet thread. There is a lot of activity and so and so (names witheld) are on this cruise. You should join the thread!"

I posted a friendly greeting and explained that we would be joining the 10/24/09 Bash on the Boat B.O.B for short. I was immediately welcomed, added to the first page cast of characters, and given information on DIS meets, door magnets and other cool things. Over the next few months, I got to know these fine people and have felt welcome to share a vacation all together.

In the fall, we made arrangements to stay at the Radisson at the Port, official hotel of the Bash on the Boat. There will be a DIS meet on 10/23 by the pool on the eve of our cruise. It should be a good time and I pity anyone with a poolside room that night!! There are literally dozens (well maybe a couple dozen) families staying there that night...all of them BOBers.

In late spring, I attended my first official DISmeet! This was initially way out of my comfort zone, but Walt put me in charge of finding a place to organize the meet. Coerscion at its best!! 2 other couples and myself (Elaine couldn't join us) met in suburban Boston for a DISmeet at TGIFriday's. It was a great time to get to know people that we already sort of knew. It was a surrealistic feeling to introduce oneself in person to people you have been talking to for several months, but Walt, Di, Dan and Nancy made it easy to chit chat about the cruise and life in general. As I drove back home to Connecticut, I got the feeling that this would be an amazing cruise if everyone was as cool and friendly as they were. It made me yearn for the cruise even more.

So in a nutshell...

I am a BOBer, an official member of the Bash on the Boat, or KK2. While I may not be screeching like KarenMouse, as I walk through the courtyard at the Radisson, a smiling man I will be as I greet these friends I have come to know over the last 12 months. The next morning, I may be a little more animated, but alas, still no screeches. I will be grinning ear to ear as I walk through those ears and onto the Ship of Dreams. Will I have a t shirt? I'm still undecided on that one as I am not artistic at all, but make no mistake, I will enjoy hanging out with family and friends on the Bash on the Boat.

I will close each chapter with an update summary of our vacation plans. So here goes...

As I shared in the last chapter on my DCL cruise I didn't do anything DIS despite being a regular on the general forum and a rare poster on the cruise meet thread.

I decided on this cruise to dive right in and enjoy all that being a DISer, BOBer has to offer. Here is where I stand on various things...

DIS Meets
As I stated in my previous chapter, I have been a regular poster on our cruise meet thread. Since joining the thread, I have averaged about 300 posts per month, so as a result, I couldn't very well be a behind the scenes, hidden member of this cruise. I plan to be at a lot if not all of the DIS meets. I will be at the Radission on Friday night, Pool on Saturday (mingling in between watching the kids), and various spots throughout the week. We don't drink, so we will be missing the wine tasting, etc, but we are linking ressies with fellow BOBer's for dining so we will be in the same vicinity of the dining rooms and have the same rotation. It will be great seeing friendly faces across the way. We will also be at Palo Brunch pretty much the same time as several fellow BOBers, and many of us are taking the same excursion in St. John. I pity anyone on that ferry and bus who aren't with us! :lmao:

I decided that I am jumping into the deep end of the pool on this cruise and am going to enjoy it as much as possible.

Fish Extenders
First of all, let me say how much I have fallen from the Artsy tree. I can take decent photographs, but that is about the limit of my artisitic ability. I was always the kid that tried so hard in school in art class only to fail, well not literally!

Therefore, I am not even going to attempt to make my own fish extender! I did look at Ebay, and none of the ones I saw really appealed to me. What I will probably do is go to Walmart or Target and get some nice fabric/cloth pumpkin or other seasonal item to hang from the fish outside of my stateroom.

The last thing art related that I had to make was a banner in my Old Testament Class in Seminary. It was a simple single color with a square house on it with the following passage, "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" I somehow got a B on it, but it was hideous. My letters did not look good, despite using stencils, my house looked cheesy. This was 13 years ago, and I have no intentions of being artisically creative for a vacation! :lmao:

In another class, I had to make a childrens Bible story and I bought a big coloring book, colored the pages, cut them out and pasted them onto a flip chart. That one I didn't get so lucky as I got a D on it. I did get an A for story presentation as that is more of a gift, my oratory skills. I was very vocal on the course evaluation form and I said something like, "we people who are not artisitic are penalized in this class for not handing in material worthy of Michaelangelo, or Leonardo. This must be corrected!" :lmao:

Ok, enough stories and on with the report! :rotfl:

You can see why I am not even attempting a "no sew" fish extender. :rolleyes1

Door Signs
This is one thing that I think I will actually have fun with. 15 years ago, I would never have attempted this, but I am fairly savy on computers and can navigate my way around MS Office, MS Publisher, so I should have door signs to hang up on our door. I did start one and have a rough draft. I am ordering a new color laser printer for work, so that should work well for me. :thumbsup2

Here again, no door signs last time...:rolleyes1

One thing that was missing from my title was t shirts. I have never made t shirts and I dread that I would have a similar fate with t shirts that I did with my Old Testament Banner...crooked letters, etc. :scared1:

At this point, I do not think our family will have Bash on the Boat T shirts. That could change if I research it enough and attempt to make some and they actually turn out okay. We will see. :rolleyes1

One of the cool things about the timing of our cruise is that we will disembark (not that that is a cool thing), on 10/31, Halloween Night.

My parents haven't been to WDW since 1996 and my dad always has said that a trip to WDW for a few days before or after a cruise would be great. I would tend to agree!

Well, my sister and I put our heads together and thought, "why don't we try going to Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party on Halloween Night?" We sold the idea to my parents and then to Elaine. Everyone was in agreement, so we booked our airfare home a day later than our cruise, and waited on May 1st to buy our tickets. While I didn't buy them at the stroke of midnight, I did buy them later that morning while at work. For some reason, the internet wasn't working so I had to call, 1-407-W-Disney and talk to a friendly voice and buy our tickets. $200 and change later, we had tickets to the Party. It was cool as I was on an Instant Message with my mom who was on hold the same time I was. It was great to share in that excitement over the internet.

A week or so later, our tickets arrived and are safely stored with our other legal documentation.

It should be a fun night as many of the other BOBers are doing the same thing we are, so once again, we will see some familiar faces as we walk the Magic Kingdom.

Yet another thing I am totally stoked about is our lodging for the Party. We have only stayed in the value resorts on Property and while those are nice and it is great to simply stay on Property, I have always wanted to try the Port Orleans Riverside Resort. My wife is always skeptical as she doesn't think they are worth the extra cost and would rather spend the money in the parks and other incidental expenses.

Well I sent a room reservation request into DU for a value, the All Star Movies specifically using the fall value code. I got the quote back and it was for higher then I expected due to there being no availability for standard rooms. We were given a Preferred room for $100/night. I thought to myself, "I bet I can get a standard room at a moderate for slightly more." I called 1-407 W-Disney and once again talked to a lovely, friendly voice who helped me out. I thought to myself if I could get a room at a moderate for $120, I would do it. Well, the friendly CM came on and said that the cost for the room would be $122. I thought, ha, what's $2! and booked a room for both our family and my parents and sister. I once again, had my mom on Instant Messenger and was able to ask her on the spot if they were fine with that.

The funny thing is, I really wanted to stay at the Riverside, but my sister has a travel agent co-worker who suggested we stay at French Quarter due to its small size. I in fact, told the CM that I wanted French Quarter but for some reason she booked Riverside. When I questioned it, she offered to change it, but I said, "nah, I really wanted to stay at Riverside anyway!"

For the next day, I mulled over our ADR arrangements for lunch the day we disembark/arrive at WDW. I had a day before the 90 day window opened for reservations, so I scoured the internet and DIS to find information. Being up River from DTD, I thought we should go there for a decent lunch. We will be eating counter service at MK that evening, so a good lunch would be in order. I was looking at the new T-Rex Restaurant thinking my kids would love it, but then I saw that they have a Build a Dino shop that my kids would want a build a dino. I also noticed that it is very popular being new and even with ressies, it can take a while to check in. I have always wanted to eat at the Rainforest Cafe, but for some reason it never worked for me. I checked the menu and it looked good, and prices seemed reasonable for a resort sit down establishment.

The next day I booked our ADR for 11:30 at the Rainforest Cafe. We will get to the POR, check in, hop on the boat to DTD and enjoy a great lunch before relaxing prior to heading to the MK for 4:00.

The next day, 11/1, our flight for home leaves at 11:00 so we will check out around 8:30 and head to MCO for home.

I didn't mind your pre-trip on my boards.
I love reading about cruises.
If you are doing a dual report, you can put both reports on.
OhMari
Have a safe trip.
Our captain, took us through Tropical Depression Ana.
I didn't notice it, till my dd woke me up and told me we were really rockin.:rotfl:
Anyways, my daughter was really angry and wanted to know what was going on. Within and hour it was over and the Captain announced early in the morning that we sailed through the Tropical Depression just fine. Sure buddy, try telling my 25 year old dd that one, she was ready to come up on deck and throttle ya. The crew in Haiti all told us they were shocked to see us, it was reported to them, that we weren't docking at the private island.

I am usually pretty good at estimating times. Before GPS, I used to like predicting ETA's while travelling. On one trip when I was in college i used to always be within a minute or two. That was on a two hour trip.

If we are "off" it won't be my fault, but JetBlue Airways fault!!!!:thumbsup2

Informing Teachers
Last night was open house night at my kids school. We are in the Northeast, so school hasn't yet started. It always starts the week before Labor Day here and they start tomorrow September 2nd.

While meeting both of my kids teachers, we shared with them that the kids will be missing 6 days due to our cruise in late October. Without hesitation, both teachers responded, "oh can I come?" We thought that was a definitely a good sign. They both asked that we would give them a heads up in the form of a note as the time gets closer so that they could get some work together for the kids. Since we have a 3 hour drive to Maine on 10/22, that might be a good time for the kids to get their work done or at least put a major dent in it.

Sand Toys
There has been a debate in our house for the last month or so regarding the need or lack therof (my position) of sand toys on the cruise. In all three ports we are planning times at a beach. My DW thinks the kids need sand toys, and I tend to think not. If we were driving to Florida, I would not hesitate, but sand toys are not something that pack easily in luggage. My DW is a notorious overpacker, and I am the one lugging it all around and negotiating the airport with a cart that weighs a few hundred pounds!

My mom, who is ever the voice of reason, gotta love moms, suggested that after dinner at Grills, DW, parents, and sister go to a store in Cocoa Beach, or Merritt Island to secure some sand toys...small ones at that! Wow that is a sentence that would leave my English 15 professor at Penn State scratching his head! My mom has said that no matter what time we get in, she is not missing dinner at Grills. She said something about the Scallops there being the best she ever had or something like that. I just like eating on the water.

I will then bring the kids back to the Radisson to swim and meet the rest of the BOBers at the pool. This is where having 2 cars will work out great!

Computer
I had toyed with taking my computer on the cruise. I thought it would be convenient for a number of reasons. They are as follows.

Charging of iPods
All of us have iPods and plan on using them while travelling in the car to Maine, flying to Florida if there is nothing on the JetBlue TV...it will be afternoon afterall and no soaps for me! With 4 USB ports, I can charge all of the iPods at the same time from my laptop.

Picture Dumping
Currently I only have a 128MB memory stick for my camera. On my last cruise I was able to take approx. 200 pictures at a low but decent setting. All of the pictures I have posted on the DIS threads were taken at 1.2 MP setting. Well, I thought it would be nice to take pictures and video and have my computer to dump them on.

Remembering that my wife is a notorious overpacker, I thought to myself, "why take more junk?" Not that my computer is junk, but it is something that is unnecessary to take on a vacation.

Random Complimentary or Reasonable Internet Access
While waiting in Portland Jetport for our flight, it would be nice to jump on and update my trip report, or flying home on AirTran it would be great to do a live report from 35,000 ft, but I just can't justify it.

I do have a smartphone that has an unlimited data plan through Verizon Wireless. I can take 3.2 MP pictures on it, and upload directly to photobucket or FaceBook. My BlackBerry Storm should be sufficient to feed my geek appetitte for the times when I have a "non roaming" signal.

Therefore, my computer will be staying home...or at least at my parents house. I will be taking it to Maine so I can jump on the DIS on 10/22 & 10/23 and read all of the updates on the BOB thread. It will be so exciting to read about people boarding their flights, going to MNHSSP, etc. :surfweb:

I plan to buy myself a nice stylish backpack to use as a carryon to store all of our sensitive items, passports, chargers, cameras, cruise documents, car rental and hotel confirmations, etc. We always buy a few magazines when we fly so they will find their way into that backpack as well. I'll be hitting Kohl's or LL Bean to find a sweet one. Maybe an orange one from LL Bean with the initials, BOB mongramed into it??? :lmao::thumbsup2 Who knows, but then I don't know if I want the BOB for the life of the backpack, but it would be funny!

It's September 1st and for the first time I can say,

We are cruising next month!

I already have sand toys for Kira packed in my suitcase :thumbsup2 She can use some of them at the pool at the resort and then she will use them at 3 ports. We will leave them at CC. They tend to round up all the toys that are left for use in the kids area on CC :thumbsup2 They are bulky but are very light and then we will have room on the way back for souvenirs :goodvibes

We will be taking two computers, Rob's laptop and my netbook :scared1:

I forgot to mention that I am going to buy a 4GB (at least) memory stick for my camera. I'll probably get that sometime next month, or later this month.

My mom should have some banging pictures. She just bought a Cannon EOS Rebel. I think she wants to get a new lense for it for the cruise as well. When we get back to Maine, I will be putting the memory stick from her camera into my computer to upload those pictures!

I think buying some sand toys once you're in Cocoa Beach is a great idea. YOu can also have Shirley from The Perfect Gift put together a beach gift basket for you. It'll be in your stateroom waiting for you when you get there.

I have the BB Storm, too. :)

Well as I already stated, I am far from artistic. After seeing fellow BOBer Cass' buttons that she designed, I decided to use her graphic and add my name to ours. In doing so, it also saves an outfit as I will just wear a polo on sailaway day and wear my pin. I can wear that same polo to dinner that night. :thumbsup2 If we drove, I would not care about luggage allowances, but I do not wish to spend an excessive amount on luggage fees to the airlines.

Yesterday prior to church I told Elaine that I was making pins and I encouraged her to wear them. She laughed and said something along the lines, "I am not wearing a dorky pin with you." I said, "awww come on, get festive and join the fun." She said that if my sister agreed to wear one, she would too. I immediately without hesitation, removed my BlackBerry from its holster and tapped out a text message to Tracy. Within minutes I heard the Magic horn echo from my phone (that's my text alert from Tracy), and Tracy said that she would wear one. I think Elaine honestly thought that Tracy would share her initial sentiment and she would be free of wearing a pin.

Last evening, since our cruise meet thread was so dead, I decided to plug away and play around with making the pins. I tried using the Waltograph Disney font, but it really didn't work too well with the rough edges of the letters. After about 20 tries, I couldn't make it work.

Just this morning I thought, "why don't I just use a normal font?" Well I did that and this is the result.

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g111/captchris74/ChrisDISPin.jpg

Cass designed the graphic, so I only added my text. I will be making 7 for our entire travel party. Cass mentioned that Walmart put them together for her, so I will be giving that a try as well.

Now I should get busy on door signs!!!

I brought my Canon Rebel XT with me in 2005 (most of my 2005 photos on my website were taken with it) and it was awesome but not easy to lug around. This time I am leaving it at home and just using my small Digital Elph. Quality and speed will be sacrificed for compact and lightweight :goodvibes

For the last year or so, I have been kicking around upgrading my tiny little Sony Cybershot 3.1 MP point and shoot camera. It is ok, but I have never quite got used to the delay, and must confess to always wanting a little more camera. When I bought the Sony 5 years ago, it was a middle of the road point and shoot. Far from being the cheapest, but not the most expensive either. It has a Lithium Ion battery so charging is great as opposed to changing batteries constantly.

The other day I was in meetings all day and my sister sent me a few text messages telling me about the video camera that she was looking to buy. I said to her, "i'd really love to have a new camera for the cruise." We got to talking about some high end point and shoots, and for the last hour of my meeting, my mind began to drift away from the topic of our fall programming schedule!

I got home and after a few minutes decided to jump on the internet and start looking at cameras. I found some really nice point and shoot models. One particularly from Sony I was ready to buy, but then I thought, let me check out a low end SLR. I found the Canon EOS Rebel XS for only reasonably more than the point and shoot I was gearing up to buy. I texted Elaine and said, "I think I want to buy a camera." Her response was, "LOL ok" I have always wanted a Rebel, and I thought, why not spend a little more for the camera I have always wanted.

In all of about 30 minutes, I purchased the camera, memory card and bag. It is a very high quality low end/beginner DSLR camera. All of the reviews I read were positive. My mom just bought the XSi, which is the next model up. It has some more bells and whistles but for what I need the XS should be just fine.

So, stay tuned...There will be plenty of pictures pre cruise and post cruise coming from my banging new camera!

Congrats on the new camera! I think we have/had nearly the same Sony camera. Ours is 4.1 megapixels and we bought ours about 4 years ago. While it wasn't the best you can get at teh time it wasn't the lowest model either. We've been shopping around for a new one now, too.

I did enjoy my Sony. DD is getting it now. She has been bugging me for a digital camera and I don't want to buy her a cheap one, but don't want to buy her a good one. I thought a decent hand me down would be the perfect for her way for her to get one.

I just had a slight accident with it too. It seems fine, but last week at a Yankee game, I forgot it was on my lap and when Jorge Posada hit the game winning home run I jumped up. The camera went flying and has some scrapes on the case!

This past Saturday, my wife was away being the leader at a Youth Retreat weekend, so I thought that I wanted to do something special for my kids. I had heard that there would be a car show in town and I thought that might be a good thing to take my new camera to. When I was talking to my office worker about it she told me that the show was Sunday not Saturday. I then asked her if she knew what the weather would be on Sunday. She replied that it would be beautiful.

My mind immediately began moving. I thought, "where could I take the kids?" I immediately thought of taking them to New York for the day on the train. The kids train fares with a paying adult are only $1.50 from New Haven to Grand Central Terminal in midtown. I then texted my sister and told her that I was thinking of taking the kids to New York and asked if she wanted to come down for the weekend to go along.

She responded with an affirmative. The plan was to go to the Statue of Liberty, Top of the Rock and Times Square. We woke up early and made the trip to New Haven to catch a train. We then transferred to the NY Subway and made a trip to Battery Park to catch a ferry to Liberty Island. It was a great day and I was able to get some great pictures with my new camera.

Now that we are approaching October, I expect that this thread will become more and more active with posts and pictures.

This past weekend, we travelled to Ohio for Elaine's brother's wedding. It was a long drive for such a short time away. In about 60 hours, we drove 1263 miles and managed to attending a wedding in between!

On the way home, we were invited to a DIS meet with Dyerneeds and Tart Anililator (Mike and Robin). We joined them at a Perkins Restaurant and had a wonderful, but short time with them.

I think they convinced Elaine to come on and DIS more, and Mike made sure to ask Elaine if she would be bringing her red dress. :rotfl::lmao:

Here is a pic that Robin took of our family.
http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g111/captchris74/DISmeet.jpg

This was my 2nd DIS meet, and Elaine's first. She was nervous about meeting people she never really met, but I think her nervousness was put quickly to rest. She really enjoyed her time and is looking forward to meeting more DISers on the cruise in just a few short weeks.

It's hard to believe, but three weeks from Thursday we will be picking the kid up from school and heading to my parents house.

Wow, its coming up fast! I better get going on my DIS tag gifts. The good thing is, I know what I am giving and where they are. Elaine is going to get some small little things for the kiddos on the cruise.

Well today was the big day, one of the few days on any cruiser's calendar that is memorable. It's Doc Day!

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g111/captchris74/utf-8BSU1HMDAxNTYtMjAwOTA5MjktMT-1.jpg

The time to cruise is coming up fast! I flipped through the docs real quick and noticed that there is no longer a Bahamas form to fill out. That is nice as Forrest Gump would say, "good, one less thang"

More things to come as the cruise approaches...

Well we are less than 2 weeks before leaving for Florida and I am pleased to say that the first suitcase is finished. :thumbsup2

Yesterday, Elaine packed up Samantha for the cruise and her suitcase is ready to go. I imagine that the bulk of our packing will be done prior to the end of the week.

DIS Tag gifts will also be completed this week. More pictures and stuff to follow as we move further along.

I can't believe that we leave in a week and 4 days!!!!

DisneyMommaSteph
10-12-2009, 10:51 AM
November 28th-Dec. 5th. Western on the Magic. :cool1: We're flying out the day after Turkey Day...and we're staying at the Radisson by the Port. My sis (she lives in VT, but we both grew up in CT) is also cruizin' with her family too. We juuuuuuuuuust booked this past week, so we're new to our cruise meet, but we're getting so pumped up by reading all the DIS stuff. We're also going to Disney World, and staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge (plus the 'rents) Jan26-February 3rd...so we basically eat, sleep, and breath DISNEY as we plan both trips! Wooooot!

I see by your sig you've done the same cruise, right? Do you have a TR for that one?

I'm lovin' reading these reports...I get more and more excited with each one I read.

One of the great things about cruising are the wealth of activities that one can participate in. You can literally do as much or as little as you want to do. I like to just pretty much go with the flow and you will rarely see me sitting still on ship. That being said, I feel I pay enough for my cruise that I don't pay to do much on ship. We usually do one excursion per cruise and limit our onboard spending as well.

These are the things we did on previous cruises

2004 RCCL Cruise
Grand Cayman--7 Mile Beach Break at Beach Club Colony and Hard Rock Cafe
Cozumel--Dune Buggy Tour

2006 DCL
Key West--Just walked around
Grand Cayman--7 Mile Beach--Sea Grape/Courtyard by Marriott
Cozumel--Paradise Beach--Dad and Tracy rented a jetski
Castaway Cay--Parasailing for Elaine and I, Dad and Tracy

For this cruise our cruise plans have been evolving over the past few months. Our itinerary is an Eastern Caribbean itinerary and we are excited about going there. I have not yet cruised to the Eastern, so I am getting jazzed up about it.

These are our plans so far.

St Maarten--Beach time at Great Bay Beach--possible jetski rental
St. Thomas--We will be going on the DCL St. John/Trunk Bay Snorkel and Beach Break
Castaway Cay--We will be just hanging out on the family beach. I will probably do snorkeling though. I want to get out to the 20K Leagues Submarine!

I have gone back and forth on the St. John shore excursion as to whether or not to keep it or just cancel. It is rather pricey for the 4 of us, but I figure if we stayed in St. Thomas we would spend probably half of what we are spending to get a tour to what has been called one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

On previous cruises we never ate at any of the alternate restaurants either. Well our first cruise didn't have any, but on our last DCL cruise we didn't try Palo. I think we were nervous about the kids staying in the kids clubs at their young age. I must confess to always being curious about how "good" the food really is at Palo.

This time, my sister and I started our lobbying process. We thought that we should try for brunch to test it out. My dad didn't want to miss a night in the dining rotation so that works for us. All of the parties that would be attending were in agreement and we decided to try to book a sea day brunch.

The day/minute our booking window opened up for CC club members was a busy time. I had a brief hiccup with my connection and was able to get on a few minutes after midnight eastern time. Literally our entire cruise meet thread was on booking excursions, spa treatments, and Palo reservations.

I got on and was able to score a Monday (sea day) Palo bruch at 11 am. I was excited about that. I am not much of a foodie, but I am looking forward to some of those gourmet pizzas among other things.

Another thing...My sister joined the camera frenzy and just purchased a Canon D10. From the sounds of it, it is a hard shell, waterproof point and shoot camera. She is hoping to get some great underwater shots.

You live and learn my friend! On our last cruise it was very stressful lugging everything from the baggage claim to the car rental. When I was at the kiosk, they said to me, "why don't grab a cart? There are a bunch scattered through the garage." Well, that made the remainder of the trip a lot easier, and checking in then on our way home.

Fortunately, Portland Airport is small and it is a very short distance from the curb into the check in area. This time, I will spend the few dollars at MCO and pay to rent a cart! They are definitely worth it!
