View Full Version : Saving $$ on WC rental

The Captain uses a WC at WDW and for the last couple trips has rented an ECV from an offsite company. Although the resorts do have complimentary WCs available, it's first-come/first-serve and the last time, when we only needed one for 24 hours we ended up with a WC that was way too big for Captain, ergo, not suitable for our needs.

DD, who also needs a WC or ECV to navigate the World is going next week. She was figuring out her budget and debating between renting an ECV or WC offsite ($150+ week) vs. at the park ($20+ a day), or taking her chances with what was available at the resort upon arrival.

On a whim, she called the local home health place here - last fall she spent four months using a WC and ended up having to rent from them for two months. She asked what it would cost to rent for the week.

$22. For the week.

It's a lighter chair, the arms come off, much more suitable for her and she'll have it door-to-door. So if you don't typically use a WC at home but know you'll need one in The World, consider checking out your local rental options at home health care places. As long as it folds, they can be gate-checked if you're flying for no charge.

I don't know why we never thought of it before, but now we know!

Great idea - just for the record - Even if the chair does NOT fold, airlines will STILL check it at no charge! They do not charge for any checked medical equipment.

I wonder if you could also rent an ECV cheaper then down there.

::yes::
there is no charge to gate check or bag check mobility equipment.
It also does not count toward your baggage allowance.
There is more information in the disABILITIES FAQs thread.

You may be able to. It would be a good idea to check with the rental place though because some local ones may not allow you to travel by air with it.
