View Full Version : Ever Feel Alone in your passion for Disney?
Disney Since 73

Hello, I'm real new to the boards and posting. I must say it is a bit overwhelming with all of this stuff!
I'm a married 45 year old man with a passion for Disney!
Sometimes I feel alone in my passion for all things Disney. My friends, coworkers and Even my wife sometimes thinks I'm strange listening to podcast and looking at things on the web about Disney. They just don't have a passion for it like I do! They don't ever say anything mean I just get some off the cuff comments and stuff.
Do any of you have that experience? I'm hoping that by trying to get involved with the Boards might be helpful in making some friends that also share my passion.
How did you get started on the boards? There is so much to choose from. Just booked my next trip to WDW for this November!!! Can't wait!
Thanks so much for any response.
Sincerely,
Scott S

Hi Scott, Welcome to the boards! You are not alone in feeling alone. I to am surrounded by people who dont quite "get" my love of Disney. I actually was picked on the most by my sister intil I took her on a trip with me last year and now she is madly in love with Disney as well. ( Not as much as me though. I am a bit of a fanatic.)
I grew up a hour outside of WDW and some of the most wonderful memories of my life were formed there at a very early age. Even now Disney fills me with such wonderful emotions and gives me inspiration to keep moving foward. ( I know that sounds corny but its true) I spend hours here on the Disboards reading posts and reading peoples trip reports. My trips are always planned out to the fullest months in advance. I drive over a 1000 miles to visit at least 2 times a year. And since I joined the Disboards a couple years ago I cant get up in the morning with my tea and not check in.
Just ignore all those people that snicker or roll their eyes. We all have our thing. My husband loves his old shows, my mom loves camping in Montauk, my friend spends hours working on costumes. I could spend hours watching youtube videos of WDW or just Dis'ing .
You will meet some great people on here. Sometimes Dis'ers even wear cut outs of lime green mickey heads to spot each other in the park. ( You can find some in the paint chip section of Home Depot) Everyone here is a lot of fun and its really awesome to not have to explain yourself to anyone here. Everyone here "gets it". Welcome home!

Oh boy, you are SO not alone! I LOVE anything about Disney! So much so that it is driving me NUTS that no one else in my family wants to book reservations yet for our trip next Oct.! I have been nagging my brother and his wife to join us, because I want their DD to experience what my two kids do! They just don't "get it."

I only just recently found another Disney lover at work, but no one in my family gets it, nor do my friends or my fiance'. I've accepted this and just enjoy my Disney self. Welcome to the boards!

Welcome to the Dis!
You aren't alone and you picked the right place to share your passion! :thumbsup2
Everyone here gets it and we've all had those questions and looks etc etc from family, co-workers and friends that just don't get it.

The most common answer I get from people is...
"you're going to Disney.... Again????"
I proudly say "YES!!!!"
You are certainly not alone... as a matter of fact you are in GREAT company here!!
Enjoy your time on the boards!

I, too am new to the boards. Luckily, I know quite a few people who are also CRAZY Disney freaks...my 10 year old daughter to name one.....
We first started going to Disney World in 2006. Next month will be our fourth trip. Each time we say we are taking this year off, we somehow end up back in Disney.
Anyone else having a hard time getting into Le Cellier? I really wanted to try it this time, but there are no open ressies.

Welcome Scott, you've definitely come to the right place. This place will feed your obsession. And yes I feel just like you. Being in Australia its difficult to find someone that has been to Disneyland let alone WDW. Nobody i know 'gets it'. DH has learnt to live with it and I'm working really hard on my kids so that they become just as obsessed as I am. :)

Oh yeah .. we just spontaneously planned this next trip (was supposed to go in February for our daughter's 5th birthday, but I lost my job and we had the money, so we moved it to October) I've been talking about it non-stop since we put the deposit down. I went out and bought the guide (even though we've been there three times before) and was being made fun of (nicely!) by family because they saw I was highlighting things.
My husband's cousin and her husband and son are also going at the time time (coincidence!) and they think I'm crazy for making reservations for dinners now. HA! The joke will be on them when we're going to CRT and Chef Mickey's and they're stuck eating at their hotel. (I warned them!)
If I had the guts to move to Florida (I'm a New Englander, going back generations :) ) I'd love to work at Disney World. I'm a former art student and have been trying to get to the Animation tour for years, something always interferes. This time I determined!

I am alone in my passion as well, and my friends at work think I am crazy when I start talking to a customer about Disney. They just dont get it!! It would be awesome to have someone to go with when we go, that loves it as much as we do but so far no luck!!

You might think you want that, but be careful what you wish for! Ha ha .. My DH and I went with his brother and bro's wife, their two kids, and his cousin and her fiance, and while it started out as all fun and excitement, it got old quickly! We went again on our honeymoon (alone, obviously!) and it was the best trip we ever had.
When we just booked this trip, we found out that that same cousin and her now DH, with their son, who is our daughter's age (they're 4 months apart and very close) happened to book the SAME exact week as we did without even knowing that the other was considering going. The good thing is that we agreed to do our own thing and coordinate when we all WANTED to. No obligations, so that's good. We'll see how it works out THIS time!
But yeah, even just having someone to talk to is nice. I'm glad that they're going for that part - I can yap to her for hours about it and she doens't roll her eyes after 4 minutes.

You are NOT alone ... it's frustrating to try to explain your love of Disney ... but to paraphrase St. Thomas Aquinas,
"for those who 'get it,' no explanation is necessary, for those who don't 'get it," no explanation is possible.
we get it. welcome!!:wizard::wizard:

The magic of Disney has always captured me... I only went to the park one day, I was very young and don't remember it, so it's not so much the resorts but the movies, music, etc...
I go around singing songs from Disney movies, I can recite many of them.
I've always love Disney specials and watching the parades on TV and stuff during the holidays.
Going there this week with my family is like a dream come true and I'm looking forward to some truly magical experiences this year.

I too feel alone in my enthusiasm for Disney. I am coordinating our 25 person Grand Gathering this Halloween (self-appointed by the way, wouldn't want anyone else in charge) and have found it difficult to motivate people. DH thinks I am crazy but at least appreciates that he will benefit from my dedication. DS7 and DD5 have been my partners in crime for most of the planning. Now that we are below the 90 day mark I have one sister who has jumped on the bandwagon with me...and she too gets frustrated by the eye rolling of those who don't "get it." I have loved every aspect of the planning! We have not vacationed at all this year, and for me planning and reading has been a get-a-way from the daily stresses of life.
Anyway, welcome to the boards I hope you find them as helpful and entertaining as I have!!

I am 46, Scott. I went to Disney World for the first time last year and, like you, I now harbor what even I feel is a bizarre affinity for the place. I don't know what it is about Disney World that does it for me. I love the way I feel walking into any of the parks, but mostly the Magic Kingdom. It's like all my responsibilites are stripped away and I am virtually compelled to simply be a kid again and just have fun. I mean, what else is a middle-aged man supposed to do with an eight-year-old daughter at Disney World but get down to her level of commitment to all-out fun.
And I remember when it all came in on me too. It was my second ride on Buzz Lightyear. A parade was going on so the ride was empty. I was with my wife's best friend and her son (he was 11). We all three were in separate cars and just nailing the points. It was just an awesome moment for me to just let go and be stupid. And right after the that ride ended I got out and walked away.
About 30 minutes later I realized I had lost my wallet and began tracing my steps. We ended up back at Buzz. I looked at a CM I had been speaking with earlier and she smiled a happy smile at me as whe waved my wallet. I smiled too because I just knew a CM would have it. She asked if I had been worried. I said certainly, bit I had faith in Disney. The girl chuckled, winked and said something like "and we try to live up to it everyday."
That was a magical moment for me. It wasn't a revelation or a cure for a disease. It wasn't even something that most people would remember. But for me, at that time, at that exact moment, I was hooked on what Disney does for so many people.
What a great feeling that is. And I get that feeling just being in the park. Heck, I get that feeling just writing this. We'll be heading back in two months for our second Halloween, and I am P-S-Y-C-H-E-D.:cool1:
We told our daughter before dinner last night that we were going. Man, is she feeling the magic now!:woohoo:
As for sharing you passion for Disney, you need look no further than these boards, my friend. We ALL feel like you do. We ALL love Disney World and Disney Land. We ALL understand how you feel and no, you are not alone.
But you are addicted, and there is absolutely no cure. Might as well feed the addiction. You are powerless to fight it.;)

Brother let me give you the skinny. I'm 39, I was a Teamster for 10 years, a father of two and a nursing student. I'm 6'3'' and almost 300 lbs, and I am the most fanatical Disney fan in my family. Embrace your passion for WDW and all things Disney. Too many people fixate on so many negative things and we are stereotyped into so many molds. Be proud to be a Disney FANATIC!!!

Hi Scott! (and everyone else on here!),
I totally understand how you are feeling. My husband and I just booked a spontaneous trip for my birthday in Oct. and I think the only reason i got him to agree to it was because it was my birthday, haha. Since I didn't have a lot of planning time, I jumped right in and got to it. I love planning everything! (I'm a planning engineer, makes sense huh?) and I especially love planning for a trip to disney. A couple of my family members are planning a trip of their own overlaping ours and they are just kind of 'whatever' about it and roll their eyes at me when I talk about where I have ADRs and what days we're planning to go to what parks, what attractions we are planning to see, etc. My husband has a nice time when we go but doesn't really get too into the planning and itsn't usually excited until we're there. He definitely doesn't get my board reading, book reading, podcast listening planning style :P
I'm glad I've found these boards. This is only my second trip as an adult and I'm pretty happy to have all these resources at my fingertips! I would definitely go to disney every year if i could talk my husband into it!

I know exactly what you mean. I start planning my next trip while I'm still in the World.
In 2007 I called my brother from DTD to ask if I could take his kids down the next time I went. In February of this year, when I was there with my niece and nephew, I asked my son if we should go winter or summer next time and thus my 2010 trip was started.
Unfortunately my husband thinks I'm nuts. He doesn't like travelling at all and planning a trip for over a year makes him laugh. He doesn't understand how I can spend that much time planning meals and parks more than a month in advance.
Although, I do have to say, he admits that on our first trip I was so organized that everything went remarkably well, and that is all thanks to you guys. I had my ADR's and park plans ready, but also had backup ideas in case something fell apart. Unfortunately that was the only trip that he joined us for, but that's ok with me. I prefer travelling with people that are into Disney as much as I am.

YES!!! My SIL and BIL think we are crazy for going with our young kids!!! They have a 5 yr old girl and a 7 yr old son that really want to go but they don't understand the hype. So in turn won't take their kids. Makes me so angry!!!
Her response is she doesn't like characters!! Well sweetie, Disney is a whole lot more then characters!!!

Hey Scott,
I think that is why "us" that enjoy the emotional attachment to Disney seek out sites like this one. I currently belong 3 Disney Forum sites. I just started getting more engaged with this one because I wanted to just meet more folks that enjoy what I do.
We are going to be there in Nov. too. Our dates are Nov. 21-30.
My DH is not as fanatical as I am, he will ask questions to humor me, but my DD-20 says I have a serious issue and then my DD-10, just gives me the eye roll when I purchase something Disney.
I even have my ring/ringback tones on my cell phone Disney.
Any way Welcome and I am sure you will meet great people here.

I get this. :) Our next trip is one month from today, and I couldn't be more excited. This will be my husband's second visit, and my...7th? 8th maybe? It'll be his first time for the Food & Wine Festival and MNSSHP though, which quadruples my excitement. There are few things in life he enjoys more than food, wine, and Halloween!
My parents are just as big of Disney fans as I am so I can pinpoint the source. :) We went for the first time when I was 10, after years of my dad being totally unenthused about the crowds, the cost, all of it. Now, just TRY to keep him away from Disney World for more than 2 years at a time!
My parents are actually leaving for Italy a week after we come home from our WDW trip, and they keep saying, "We wish we were coming with you instead."
(This is my first post on these boards, by the way, so hi everyone!)
