View Full Version : The shock of my life at 50s Prime Time Cafe

Each time my family goes to DHS, we usually eat lunch at either Sci-Fi Dine-In, the Hollywood Brown Derby, or 50s Prime Time Cafe. When we went in January of this year, we chose the third. I'd eaten there before, and I liked the home-cooked meals and cheerful atmosphere; I'd even been scolded by our waitress for having my elbows on the table. I thought I knew what to expect. So imagine my surprise when, at 18 years old, I was not only scolded, but sentenced to a Time-Out.
I'm a self-professed BlackBerry addict (in my defense, I'm a teenager, and I work at AT&T) and mealtime is no exception. I hadn't seen my friends in days, so of course they were keeping me updated on news back home. The first time our waiter caught me texting, he chastised me and threatened me with a harsher punishment next time. I thought I'd be sneaky and keep my phone in my lap (I know some of you have done this at school!). Halfway through my meatloaf, I furiously texted back in response to a friend when I heard our waiter exclaim loudly, "Girl, I told you to get off that phone!" Taken aback, I glanced up to see him holding out his hand. "Give it to me," he said sternly. Meekly, I handed it over, thinking he'd give it back after he received the check.
"Everyone," he said, turning to face the rest of the dining room, "cousin Susie has been caught texting with her phone at the table! After I told her not to! Everyone, tell her, 'Bad cousin Susie!'"
"Bad cousin Susie!" chanted the room as my face turned red.
"Come on," he continued, motioning for me to get up. "Wha-?" I said in confusion.
"Into the corner for you!"
Mortified, I followed his pointed finger and stood with my nose against the wall while my parents shrieked with laughter and the rest of the room watched, amused.
Afterward, the waiter gave me my phone back with good grace; he determined by the shade of my face that I learned my lesson. I resumed eating my delicious meatloaf and milkshake, red-faced but laughing. To this day my parents laugh over it, and my dad laments that he didn't grab the video camera in time. And I don't text at the table anymore.
Parents: feel free to bring in your unsuspecting teenagers.
Kids: mind your manners if your family decides to eat at Prime Time!

Would have loved to see that. Especially since I'm a High School teacher!
Kudos to you for being such a good sport!
What would be even funnier is the CM punishing your parents for allowing you to text at the table!

What a good sport you were. I just read this to by DS12 who is also a texting maniac who seems alarmed by this story. I don't know if he can abstain from texting for the whole meal time.

tell you stories that would have you rolling on the floor...but I won't. I have been called out many times at Prime Time and spent a good deal of time in a Time Out.
When you get a good interactive server......it really MAKES the experience what is it supposed to be!
Have fun and take it in stride!

3 years ago we went to 50Pt for dinner and Uncle Tim put my SIL in the corner after she was caught 3 times with her elbows on the table. :rotfl2: Our kids were 5 and 8 years old at the time and almost fell on the floor laughing.

I love 50s PT even though I always get scolded by all my neighbors & the CMs.
I love 50s Prime Time Cafe :thumbsup2
When I was there a man across from us had his elbows on the table and was scolded several times for it before he was told to stand up. He was instructed to sing 'I'm a little teapot" to the rest of the diners. His kids were dying laughing. After he finished the first time, he thought he was done, but he was then told he needed to do it again with the hand/body motions. It was so funny. I'm going to plan this as one of our meals when I go back with my unsuspecting family. I will not share the secret with them though and the camera will be ready ;)

I was on my cell phone during dinner, (I know, but I was by myself at an isolated table so there was no way I was bothering anyone) when a server from another section saw me, took my phone, chatted with my friend before hanging up on her, and then made me sing I'm a Little Teapot. I was taken aback, but took my punishment like a good sport.

My husband and I went there while on our honeymoon (in 2003) and our waiter "Uncle Patrick" told me I had to finish my meal (also the meatloaf - pretty good!). He then noticed my husband's "Groom" pin and made a big deal out of us being newlyweds. We thought that was it, but then he stood on a chair in the middle of the place and sang "Love and Marriage" (from Married With Children). He had half the place singing along. I thought it was really cute, even though I was pretty shy and usually hated attention like that :)

We had something like this happen but unfortunately my daughter, 17, got a call and was on her phone speaking to a friend who just had a tragic circumstance happen to her. The waitress took her phone away and told her friend she shouldn't be talking to my daughter blah, blah....to say the least my daughter was furious and the whole situation was terrible. I'm sure the waitress had no idea but should have stopped when she saw my daughters reaction. So our experience wasn't too funny...instead hurtful to my daughter and her friend who was already upset.

I bet he could... if you hold on to his phone during meals ;)

I am :rotfl: here! We are headed to WDW in Nov and my 10yo will have a brand new cell phone with full texting capability! Her 11th b-day is in early Dec, but we are moving across the country (WDW is a stop during the move!), so she is having her birthday party before we leave complete with cell phone to keep in touch with her friends!
50sPT is on my list of desired ADRs. I can't wait (for the food or entertainment)!!!

HA! HA! Your story brings back fond memories of our visit to the 50's Prime-Time Cafe last year. We had very late-night reservations at around 10:00PM. We had a few tired young children on our hands as well. You can imagine our surprise when the waitress sat down next to us to take our orders, chided us about not to dare ask for ketchup, and even nick-named my young son, Sparky! The food is the type of food that you find in your local hometown diner. I had the meatloaf and mashed potatoes. The servings are absolutely huge here. I liked the food certainly, but it is not as good as some of the other WDW restaurants. What I loved about the restaurant was the theme - it is almost as if you are walking into a retro kitchenette or even someone's vintage kitchen. Really comfy and cozy atmosphere. My poor son - we called him Sparky for easily 2 months after our trip to Disney.

We were there last week. Any chance your waiter's name was Mike? He was ours and VERY funny. He picked on my sis-in-law. He made her set the table, he paraded her thru the restaurant to return the menus. Wouldn't let her have dessert because she didn't finish her lunch. He brought all ours out and didn't bring her anything--only to return 5 minutes later and say, "I decided you can have dessert after all," and slammed a plate in front of her that was her left-over sandwich that he had put ice cream, whipped cream and sprinkles on top of. VERY FUNNY! My 8-year-old son thought this was hilarious!
