THANK YOU ALL SOOOOOOO MUCH.
The surgery went ok it was over 5 hrs, was supposed to be 4. The Dr. said that the tumor had grown, since they did they MRI in April, he could only save 1/3 instead of 1/2 of the kidney. He got all the cancer, but the fact that it spread means he has a 50% chance of a offshoot someplace else and he has to be watched closly. He also removed a tumor from the bladder and that should be ok. The next few days will tell if the kidney will function. He said that if he didn't have damage he would have taken the whole one, but he worked very hard to same the amount he did.
Now all we can do is wait, and then make sure he is tested very often to make sure he is clean.
He was awake last night and seemed ok, but he is always good after surgery and then the next day not so. But he called me this am and seems to be good, they don't have him druged up as bad because they gave him a eppidural (I am sure that is not how it is spelled) and he is numb from the chest down, but he is not foggy which is good.
I will keep everyone posted, thanks for the prayers and good wishes/
I told him he has to be camping by Labor Day!!!!

I'm glad to hear he's feeling okay this morning. Bob had an epidural after his thorasic surgery for pain control. It was great..although it took a while before they realized his incision was in one area..but the suregeons were digging debris out of the other side of this chest from the previous laproscopic surgery that didn't hold up.:sad2: So they had to increase the area that the epidural was to cover. Once they got it right..it worked like a charm :thumbsup2and it does facilitate the recovery. Only will tell you he was in for a rude awakening when he came home, as they only took the epidural out the day before. It did get him through the worst of the pain though...giving his body some time to heal. Then they send him home with the DRUGS to help get him the rest of the way!(personally I think the wife should get a script as well..!:rolleyes1)
I'll be keeping you and Richie in my thoughts and prayers.

Good morning. The Dr. seemed happy with how he is doing. He was up and walking around yesterday. I just hope today is as good, he tends to start going downhill on the 2nd day, but as of last night ran a slight fever. I think it will be ok. I am going into work for a few hrs and then up there all day today.
Thanks for all the prayers and good wishes.

Thanks everybody, Rich seems to be doing OK. He is having the epidural taken out tomorrow and is very nervous about that. I guess that when they see if the kidney is working, not sure yet.
He thanks everyone for their well wishes. He might get out of the Hospital on Tues, I'm nervous about that. I will keep everyone posted.

Keeping my fingers crossed that Richie gets to come home tomorrow, Lorna! I'm also praying that you "hold up", too. He may be the one that had the surgery, but you're going to be the caregiver & that can be very draining - both physically & emotionally.

Thanks again everyone. He probably won't come home till Wed. or Thurs.
Got the cat and epidural out today. Walking ok. His leverls are a little high, but Dr. says he should be OK.
To top it all off our dog died today, It was his and Matt's dog and Matt got really upset this morning when we thought the dog was sick, he thought it would be very bad for Rich. I didn't think it would be upstetting to me, because I always said I wanted to get rid of him, because he ruined my house. But I know Rich loved him. I was the one to find him on the floor, and it freaked me out.
But I am sitting here crying and can't stop myself, what an emotional week. What a week for this to happen, my nerves are raw, and when I see my son crying like a baby I fall to pieces. Rich is OK with it, he is sad but he knew he was old. Matt still feels that he will be upset when he gets home because the dog always comforts him when he has had surgery. I think he will be ok.
I know this will all pass and things will be fine, because people have it so much worse than us, but right now I guess I am feeling sorry for myself.
I am sorry to rant on and on, I think I am going to bed, and thank god tomorrow is another day. and I am so lucky to have that day.

Aw, Lorna. You've had so much on your plate & now this. I'm so sorry. It's a good thing to cry & you deserve to more than anyone else I can think of right now. The first thing I am doing when I don't have to drive back and forth to the hospital is drink a bottle of wine. For someone who didn't drink a lot I am thinking and doing it a lot more, must be the influence of the DisBoards feinds!!!! But I like the influence!
I have told him about everyone's good wishes and he thanks everyone. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have so many great friends. We are very lucky to have some really great friends and family. We are also lucky to have meet some many on these boards, what a great support system you all are. I can't wait for October to meet some more of you that we haven't meet. I am ready to PARTY!!!!!!!!!!!!

:wizard:Here's hoping you get some good news and Richie comes home today. Although..you'll have your work cut out for you, at least you won't be going back and fourth to the hospital....and I'm sure he'll feel so much better being back in his own home.

He is home and doing good. I just came back from Publix damm there is nothing that he can eat. When you ask for help with diet they send in someone for 10 minuets and expect you to change your diet, that you have been on for 30 years in in minuets. I have asked and asked for someone to give us guidance and never get anywhere. Now he has to watch sodium and potasium closer than ever, also sugar and everything else. I am frustrated but this to shall pass. At least he is doing OK this seems to be the best recovery yet. The care at Moffit was great, the nurses were wonderful. I think that is why he is doing so well. If all goes well we will be camoing on labor day yeaaaaaa.

I am trying to. When we came home yesterday I fell into a deep sleep, first one in weeks. But the phone rang, it was my boss asking me to tell him how to find something, end of sleep.
I also have to go into work on Sat., because I am so far behind, but come Sunday I'm a vegie, do nothing but wash. Maybe I'll go camping in my yard, no phones, if Richie can get up the steps we might just do that and leave the cell phone on silent.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Richie is doing great. 2 weeks yesterday and as of Wed. he has been driving, running around and doing things and feels wonderful. I can't believe how well he is doing, he lost 20lbs also. We are going to the FT. next weekend, had to cancel my reservations for Aug 20th. because we are having company, so I made them for next weekend. Also made reservations for Sept last weekend @ $47 a night.
Anyone going to be there next weekend?

Thanks Deb, I am so glad I never expected him to do so well. When he had the hernia surgery in Jan, it took weeks. I think it was the Hospital Moffiit was wonderful, I guess they have to be, but if they thought that a problem was happening they head it off at the pass.
I never thought we would be camping this soon, why don't you come vist us?
