I posted this information on another thread, but thought it would be useful as it's own thread.

None of us anticipates needing veterinary care for our fur-babies while we are vacationing at FtW. But....it can happen. Therefore, I am glad to share this information just in case my fellow Fort Fiends are in need of vet care while at the Fort.

I have used this vet, and found them to be extremely good...

Sand Lake Animal Clinic
8932 S. Apopka-Vineland Rd
Tel no: 407-876-4461
This is about 8 miles from FtW.

I have not used this (thank goodness) but they are recommended by Sand Lake Animal Clinic.....
24 hour emergency vet care:
Veterinary Emergency Clinic of Central Florida
2080 Principal Row Orlando, FL 32837
(407) 438-4449
This is about 23 miles from of FtW.

I suggest that you keep this info handy & print out maps from FtW to these locations. Hopefully, you won't need it, but in an emergency it's a good idea to have this information at hand.

Thanks for sharing this!

I think it's wise to get info like this well in advance of actually needing it. Not much is worse than having an emergency situation in an unfamiliar town.

Debbie, this is great - thanks! I always try to have that info. with us when we're at FW, but I also hate to just randomly pick a vet out of the phonebook. Great to have other people's experiences. I'll add these to my vacation notebook! :thumbsup2

Just in case you want another vet reference...

My doggie goes to a vet in Orlando called Kindred. It's about a 1/2 mile north of the Florida Mall. And very reasonably priced for a visit. I think it's about 35-45$ to see the vet, and of course plus any lab fees. It's a family practice and I've been happy with them since taking my doggie there in 2006.

Although this is further from FtW, it's still nice to have alternatives. Thanks for sharing.

Tim....thanks for adding this to your website.

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 to both of you!

I would highly recommend the Sand Lake Animal Clinic. This is the clinic that Fort Wilderness Kennels told us to use. It is completely state of the art. The operative area reminds you of a traditional hospital surgicial unit, complete with ultrasound equipment. To make a long story short, our vet at home told us our cocker spaniel had gallstones and she became very ill while we were staying at The Fort. It wasn't gallstones, but a fatal liver disears. The vet and staff are the most compassionate people that I have ever met. We had to have our 2 1/2 year old cocker euthanized and they didn't even require payment at the time. They told us to take care of our daughter and pay them when we returned to pick up her ashes. I live in Maryland, and I can tell you this would never have happened at home. When we arrived home, a sympathy card that was signed by everyone on staff was waiting for us. No one ever wants to be in this situation, but it is good to know that such a fantastic clinic is near.

I don't want to depress anyone with my story, just want to let you know how great we were treated.

On a lighter note. One of the campers in our loop found out about my daughter and told us her neighbor had a puppy. Well, we went home with Tinkerbell. She now joints on our yearly trips to Fort Wilderness.

Also, Disney gave us each, 4 in our party, 2 day passes at no charge because of the time lost with Prancer being sick. I know it doesn't cost them to do this, but it's the thought that makes a difference. Everyone was so nice at Disney.

Here's a vote for South Orlando Animal Hospital about fifteen minutes from Disney. Phone 407-855-1297. We are from Pennsylvania and, naturally, knew nothing about Florida vets near Disney. We were at the fort several years ago with our dog and needed immediate vet care at about 7:00 am. We called the Disney kennel, and a woman there gave us a name. Called-the vet office would not take us, but they gave us the name of the South Orlando Animal Hospital. They were great. Now, luckily, we had all of our dog's records with us, so the doctor could immediately take our dog into surgery. Reasonably priced, very caring, and professional. The doctor even called us and then our vet when we got home to see how our dog was doing.

A few years ago, my dog was diagnosed with a tumor just before we were to leave for the Fort. She was put on meds to shrink the tumor. I did my vet research then (2002) as a precaution if I should have to take my dog somewhere while in FLA. This was the same Emergency Clinic everyone referred me to back then. Thank goodness, I didn't have to use an emergency center. It's good to know they are still being referred and recommended.

Here's another vet about the same distance away:

Celebration Veterinary Hospital
www.celebrationvet.com
49 Blake Blvd
Kissimmee, FL 34747-5415
(407) 566-8292

That is where I take my kitties. They're open Monday through Saturday.

I have used the emergency clinic too. They are very good.

We have used Sand Lake once and while the Vets were good they IMHO want to do additional treatments with the associated expense including surgery and from my impression they are very proud of their surgery facilities so I guess they are trying to pay for that and make a buck from it. Good for a one visit and for an initial problem, but not for long term care of your four legged family members IMHO.
