I hope I'm putting this in the correct place!
I am a teacher and a parent, so I definitely know hands on activities are awesome!
A couple of weeks ago, I bought some cheap canvas (roughly 9x12 I think for $3.47 for 3 at Walmart) plus some cheap acrylics. I've been using these to let my DD5 paint artwork for her bedroom.
I attended a workshop about using art in the middle school classroom last Monday and Tuesday. We made books (which I so totally think I could do with my students!). We also made paper, using painting techniques to do them. (This might also work for some people who want to jazz up their scrapbooking paper...)
First technique: Bubble painting. Shallow dish (such as an old cool whip container) + a generous amount of acrylic paint + generous amount of dish soap + a little water. Mix well. Stick a straw in it and blow until there are bubbles rising over the edge of the container. Pull out the straw, then put your paper flat ontop of the bubbles. Repeat until the paper is covered in the manner you choose. We did this with different colors, and I let my DD do this on canvas. It turned out beautifully.
Second technique: Water color splats. (Okay...I don't really know what to call this, and the lady didn't give us a name for it.) Get a generous drop of water color paint on the brush, place the drop on paper (or canvas or whatever...). Without touching the paint or the paper, hold a straw over it and blow. It will mostly run out from the drop in little tendrils. I just did this with my DD, and some of them look like fireworks. Of course, she had fun with this.
I can take and post pictures, if anyone is interested. I was wondering if anyone else had any good ideas for crafts to do with young kids, especially painting techniques (but anything I can do with my 5 year old is awesome.)
