Has anyone been on the Germany trip over Christmas holiday?

Is anyone GOING on the December 20 - 28 trip to Germany this year?

Anything anyone can tell me wonderful about that trip?

Hello! We are going on the Christmas Markets trip to Germany--my understanding is that this is the first year a xmas trip has been offered, apparently based upon requests to include the famous Christmas Markets. I have a call in to ABD to let me know about the details--there will be changes to the schedule due to the holidays and weather--they have promised to let me know when they know. I'll post what I learn. Meanwhile...if anyone else has any inside scoop please share! (We have a DD who will be 9 and a DS who will have just turned 16).:santa:

I was under the impression that information on holiday tours aren't available until about a few months before the trip. But maybe this year will be a little different ...

Either way, when the cast members at AbD know, they'll probably call each person that is booked on those tours. Right?

JUST got off the phone with the booking agent... the itinerary should be firmed up over the next couple weeks. Right now, VERY tentatively, they have this...

2 nights in Heidelberg
1 night in Trendleberg
2 ngiths in Rothenburg and
3 nights in Munich

Not stopping at Steiff factory (it is closed all that week). They aren't sure what they are replacing it with.

Added... Nuremberg Christmas Market.

Now, to start pulling together boots and sweaters which I haven't needed in a while.

thanks Figmentfan! Sounds like the number of nights per town is the same--with the elimination of the stuffed bear factory and the addition of the xmas market. We did the xmas London/Paris in 2008 and were very pleased with the way Disney worked with the holidays (including a great full day/evening at Disneyland Paris on xmas day), so have no doubt the German itinerary will be just as magical. Are you going, and if so any kids?

figmentfan2009

Number of nights in each place changes... it was 2, 2 2 and 2, now it is 2, 1,2,3

Yes, we booked today, we have a 17 and a 15 going as well as dh and I.

They said that they are still working on what to replace the bear factory with so I don't think that is what Nuremburg is doing...

My kids are thrilled to death that they may actually get to not only see Germany but Germany in the snow... DS is totally into history and particularly the medieval period so it is going to be a particularly magic holiday season for us this year.:santa:

Haven't taken the tour but having lived in germany for 3 years in my younger years (Mannheim) I will tell you that christmas is one of my favorite memories. The christmas markets are beautiful and having spent a lot of time in heidelberg you'll have a wonderful time.

Have fun!

Thanks for the correction--we re-went through the ABD website to get the current trip details to compare, and do note the extra night in Munich (and one less night at the castle). We've already booked a pre and post night, so this gives us yet more time in Munich--and more likely now a day train trip to Salzberg! I've decided to stop comparing the trips--the Chirstmas trip will be decidedly different, and it is all good! I checked a Germany guidebook and it sounds like the Nuremburg Christmas Market is quite the experience--guess city goes all out and it is quite well known.

Yeah, given the change in weather conditions, there are things that are going to likely have to change...

This is the website I found yesterday for the Christmas Market...
they go all out.

Thanks FigmentFan2009! From maps etc I'm guessing we'll be at the Christmas Market on Dec 23, which may be the final day for that market--it may go to the 24th (some of the markets apparently close on the 23rd). Hey--aren't you about to go on the China trip? We did that last June--it was indeed the trip of a lifetime, and we even ventured out on our own in Bejing using the subway (although I'd recommend taxi--very very inexpensive). If Daisy is one of the guides, tell her hello from Ashley from California (our soon to be 9 yr old, who just adored Daisy). We had Dusty and Daisy--great guides.

We lived about 45 minutes from Nurnberg four years ago. You will love the market- all of Germany is beautiful during Christmas, and the market and old square is magical- especially if there is snow. I want to go back again:)

I also lived in Mannheim when I was younger! We were there in 89-92. I agree...the Christmas markets are great and Heidelberg has a wonderful one. Be sure to drink plenty of gluhwein!

For those who have lived in Germany...it looks like ABD will have us staying in Munich for the final three nights of the trip, which will include Christmas Day and Dec 26 (from the guidebooks it looks like everything is shut down for both days). Do the trains run on limited schedules during those two days?

FigmentFan2009: the ABD rep said that as of this week, there are 10 kids on the trip (wide range of ages), which is pretty good 6 months out.

figmentfan2009
07-21-2009, 04:09 PM
at least one of the 'kids' is 15, the other will be a week away from the great 18th birthday. Both are actually looking forward to ice skating in Heidelberg if we have the time!

There were 7 empty rooms before we booked (now there are a max of 5).

I'm hoping they have something wonderful booked for our time in Munich. I didn't get many details, only that the bear factory is closed the whole week.

Just moving this up, as we are getting closer to December. No word re the final schedule, although I heard a few weeks ago that there were only a couple of rooms left. Who all is going?

Well, Don't know about anyone else, but we are still going... still looking avidly forward to it... still haven't heard ANYTHING about the itinerary.

BUT!!!

I keep hoping to hear... and I keep hoping that someone will start talking about it soon! I'm getting to the "I'm excited" point again.

I bought a nifty little common German phrases book from AAA for $5, to brush up on my very minimalist German (from my high school days xx years ago!)--and I'm starting to focus on Germany travel books to get ideas for free time. I feel the excitement building! I spoke with a couple who live in Munich and they said it is 50/50 there will be snow on the ground at Christmas--and that the Christmas markets are sights to behold. (Also sounds like the train to Salzburg is pretty easy, so we are likely to be doing that at some point during our Munich stay--we are adding on two days at the end via ABD, so we'll get to know that city pretty well). I saw other comments about the Germany trip that suggested it was more adult than child oriented, which was surprising--we wanted to do this trip while our youngest was still "young enough" to be thrilled with the fairy tale aspects (she's 9). It'll be a great trip, I am sure--for the young and old at heart!

To those of you who are going -- have a great time! I am soooo jealous. I think the Germany trip looks like the most "magical" of the Adventures. Anyone can take you rafting the grand canyon, but nobody does castles and fairytales like Disney!!

I have to find a phrase book and I'm REALLY hoping that real german is a lot like the amish version of german!

I am hoping a lot to be able to walk the Philosopher's trail and get some pictures and enjoy the peace!

Have been to Germany many times (married a good German boy) - but have not been with ABD. All I remember about our trip at Christmas was it was VERY cold and rainy, so pack accordingly. I never expected the markets to be outside - LOL I mean, really, it was cold AND raining. Way too cold for this Georgia girl. :) But it was a lot of fun and our kids loved it!! Have a great trip!! We are headed to South Africa next week with ABD - a little warmer:)

Gloves, layers of clothing and lots of hand warmers are on the list--we are in a heat wave here in San Diego, so the thought of a cold and rainy or snowy Christmas sounds good to me! (Enjoy South Africa--we had hoped to do that this Christmas, but due to costs we scaled back a bit and are going with the Germany trip.) Hey Figmentfan--where and what is the Philosopher's Trail? Ober und aus.

Hey Figmentfan and others going to Germany at xmas: the details are now in place and an ABD rep will be calling this week--I called today and got some of the details (guides are--as of now--Stephanie, from Berlin area, and Jennelle--probably misspelled that; she's been a Disney guide for a few years). The trip sounds great--and is just about full.

Oh... EEEEEPPPP!

I may have to call them tomorrow afternoon if they don't call by then... just so I can be home when we get the details (as opposed to being at work when they call).

Thanks for the heads up!

I figured the trip would be nearly a sellout, but I was also hoping that the 'coach' wouldn't be too too crowded...

A few things I picked up in the call from yesterday: our group will tour with its own Night Watchman--guess there are normally hundreds that follow one NW. Bit of Disney magic (and pull!) there! No bear factory or bike ride due to holidays and weather, but there is an addition of a circus performance, and a few additional meals--and the Xmas Market in Numberg (from the books I've read, that is the most famous of the Xmas Markets). We'll head to Munich on Christmas Day, and we'll have three nights at the hotel there (from the guidebooks, the hotel in Munich is top notch, centrally located with excellent service, pool, sauna etc etc). The ABD rep had been on the Germany trip before, and raved about the additions to the holiday trip--and the guides, of course!

Sounds charming, and I knew nothing of these Christmas markets until I saw a brochure earlier this week from another travel company promoting their tours. I didn't see anything about this on the Adventures By Disney web site either. Going away during the Christma holidays might be a really good way to enjoy what is often a high-pressure holiday for families at home.

This one is there under the 2009 dates... or maybe holiday trips. DH keeps finding it.
They emailed me the updated itinerary.
I'm surprised/impressed we still get to do archery.
I'm WAY looking forward to the circus and our own personal night watchman. I'm wondering if maybe they are slower this time of year and it was easy to get an extra watchman willing to work during the holiday season to make a bit of extra money.

Just curious - what's a night watchman? This trip sounds like a lot of fun - and like one poster noted, maybe a good way to do something special for the holidays which doesn't put stress on family members in the ordinary way. How lovely to have Disney take care of it all for you!

If you look under About Us... look under holiday departures and THAT is where you can find the trip. It actually just links to the 2010 itinerary but that is where you can see the dates.

AND, today marks 90 days.

Nightwatchman tour

by Walhei

English guided tour throu Rothenburg every day at 8pm between easter and x-mas. In the years before the dawn of the 20th century, the night watchman was one of many citizens of Rothenburg responsible for the safety of the inhabitants of this walled, fortified city. Even though the citizens who slept soundly at night in their beds trusted him to keep the streets inside the high stone walls safe, his status was less than honorable. His pay was low and his job was a dishonorable one. Only the gravedigger and the executioner were lower. His job was dangerous, because he had to guard the city at night like a policeman.

http://www.tripwolf.com/en/guide/show/378132/Germany/Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber/Nightwatchman-tour

Don't know if this is the actual tour, but it looks like a good explanation of what I think they are talking about.

We just returned from the trip. It was fun but with some drawbacks. Accommodations in Trendelburg were problematic at best. That was clearly the low point and with the trip cut to one night there and one more night in Munich, that change is a very big positive. Christmas day in Rothenburg will be fun. Jennae should be one of your guides and she is great. You should have two days of four hour bus rides, be patient. Dress warmly, Neuschwanstein will be cold, but should be very beautiful.

A valuable tip, in Rothenburg, the Kathe Wohlfahrt stores are everywhere (many are not label as such). If you have purchased and shipping from one of their stores and are buying and shipping from another of their stores, show the cashier your prior shipping receipt BEFORE SHE RINGS UP ANOTHER RECEIPT. They will combine the shipping and save you duplicate charges.

With the exception of three or four rooms in the main building, the rooms and bathrooms were very small. No phone, no internet and nothing to do in the town. The cellphone coverage was good. The winter should be okay, but in the summer I would worry about being too hot.

We did The Germany trip in summer 08. Our entire group stayed in the main building. I didn't know there were other buildings. Our rooms were huge. Our kids room was bigger than most NYC apartments. It was cool enough in the summer with the windows open (no AC there or in Rothenberg). There is nothing to do there at all except for all the activites Disney provides. It's the kind of place to hang out and drink wine. The kids played soccer and cards. It was a few hours when we arrived and a few hours the next afternoon. It felt like a nice slow down in the middle of an otherwise packed itinerary.

I agree--and we are nearing the 60 day mark. The guides now have a break (for this trip) between now and the Christmas trip, so with that bit of a rest up and the excitment of the holiday season, I imagine everyone will be really pumped up for this particular Adventure. It should be a wonderful experience! (When I asked a month or two ago it was nearly full--anyone call lately for the number of people going/break down of the ages of the kids?)

This location was a favorite of mine. We did this trip in October last year and the fall leaves and countryside were spectacular in Trendelburg. We were the only group there-22 of us and we were all in the main building-I was not aware there was other buildings to stay in. My Mom and I shared a room that was just huge. It must have been 20 feet wide and thirty or more feet long. I think it was the best room in the castle and was up one flight of stairs. No elevator in the castle and my Mom is 80 years young so the guides knew she needed a room with not too many stairs. It was very quiet and serene-just what I wanted on vacation. The hotel in Munich was too elite and big city for me but it did have the best breakfast of all locations. I much preferred the country setting over the big city. I guess it is all in what you are used to-I am a country girl. All 4 hotels are a little different on this trip to give you an overview of the area. Take time and enjoy what each has to offer. You will love this adventure.

From the beginning of Advent, booths and stalls are set up on the market-places in all cities where you can buy everything you need for Christmas: decorations for the tree and candles, crib figures and gingerbread (which is mainly baked and consumed at Christmas), Christmas trees, and presents for Christmas Eve. Walking through such a market really is an exceptional experience. Children enjoy this most of all. The smell of fir resin and roasted almonds intermingle. Then there are all the lights from the stalls and the little stoves where sausages are fried and chestnuts roasted. Songs and the sounds of music fill the air. The most famous Christkindlmarkt takes place in Nuremberg and attracts lots of visitors every year.

No problem with credit cards or ATMs. It's the same as the US. Be sure to alert your bank to authorize use of your ATM card.

The food, beer, and wine are all spectacular. The best shopping is in Rothenburg, especially Christmas goods.

Well... not quite CD... more like download from Rhapsody and/or iTunes. It is really good and $9 for 16 song album.

Not bad. Opted for Rhapsody because it is MP3 and I can burn it to a CD as a backup...

The music is really pretty... and I can start to get in the mood...

DH has been watching diligently for "the box" which hasn't come yet. It's hard to believe that it is only 45 more days until we fly. I SO wish the kids didn't have midterms right up until the last minute or that either of them could afford to blow off one of the tests.

Been listening to Christmas music and doing some digging on what we can do on our time "off". DD has ordered her Letter Jacket (who knew you could letter in ROTC) and hopes like heck that it gets here in time. I'm not holding out a lot of hope, but she figures it will be warm enough with a sweat shirt under it even for colder times.

I'm starting to try to figure out what to pack... should I plan on really cold or only late fall in PA cold?

Where is everyone else who is going from? We are from central texas.

Can you tell I'm starting to get excited? Even have my countdown on my white board at work.... :santa:

I am watching for the box too! (last year, the box came closer to 30 days out due to the different holiday time itinerary for the Knights and Lights trip, so while I hope it comes any day now, it could be another two weeks). (We also booked via AAA, so I have to rely on my AAA agent to let us know when things arrive--we HAD a great travel rep from AAA, but she retired and the new one just isn't up to the same level; our prior agent was ALMOST as enthusiastic about Disney trips (cruises/parks/ABD) as we are, so it was a lot more fun working with her.) We are from San Diego--so we have to dig deep from winter clothing! (Last year the best thing we did for the cold climate in Paris was bring hand warmers we got from a sports store--tucked them in our gloves). I've been watching the weather for Frankfurt and Munich--so far, the temp highs in the 40s and 50s, lows have dropped below 30--but no snow yet that I can see. Our friends from Germany tell us there should be snow--I hope so, but not so much as to create any problems! (We are also doing a pre-night in Heidleberg and two post nights in Munich--with a tentatively planned side day trip by train to Salzburg, weather permitting).
Looking forward to meeting you all! (Our DS turns 16 in early Dec and our DD turned 9 in August).

Backpack for our Jr Adventurer is the same--which works for her. The adult ones are smaller but seem to have plenty of storage compartments and inside pockets, so it should work pretty well on the plane (and for the bus rides in Germany). I used to pay the guide tips with travelers checks (it was listed as an acceptable method of payment, and less for me to be worried about)--but now the tips suggestions state only cash (Euros or American in this case). Alas--but it'll be easier for the guides!

This week--looks like temps in the 40s (Frankfurt and Munich) with some rain--I hope the rain goes away (cold, I can deal with) and snow in moderation starts soon!

It has been a really really not great couple weeks around our house... but life is starting to get somewhat normal and I'm really starting to get excited and looking forward to the trip.

I'm hoping the detroit airport has improved in 8 years... we have a 5 hour layover. I'm also hoping for no snow in detroit!

I'm thinking that we need to run out and get a spare coat for at least one of the kids. NO, I'm not paranoid.

last of the batteries are charging... we are almost all packed. This weekend is backing up the laptop and cleaning off the external hard drive...

I'm looking forward to the munich glechenspiel!

she doesn't want a winter coat because she doesn't want to look fat... I can't get her to be able to stand ANY winter coat... becuase they all make her (110 pound) body look fat...

I was seriously jealous, because it would never fit *MY* body! It's red & fitted & by XOXO. I can't imagine how a waist like that would make her look fat.

Or just let her suffer.... She'll get to Germany, and end up having to wear so many layers, she'll look like a marshmallow! :rotfl:

We have coat success!

the macy's coat... it met with eye rolls... but burlington had one that was mostly tolerable... and it has a furry hood and is going to be warm enough to keep her pretty comfy even during the night watchman walk...

sigh...
