I'm diabetic so I never have dessert, especially at a restaurant. A salad, of course, would be much better for me. Has anyone ever heard of being allowed to get an appetizer (or just a small salad) instead of the dessert? It's probably a big no-no but you never know until you ask, right?

Even the non-diabetics out here would like to know the answer to this! I usually like to forego restaurant desserts for a Mickey bar or a frozen banana at the parks while watching the fireworks!

If you are on one of the dining plans, this is not allowed.

I wonder if you brought a note from your doctor stating your medical condition if they would make an exception for you? You might also check on the DisAbilities board.

Those are both good ideas, I'll check them out. Trust me, I would love to try some of those wonderful desserts. With all the walking and a little extra insulin, it wouldn't kill me but I just can't start it. I'm at 5 shots a day, I just can't eat it - but we can wrap it up for my husband's midnight snack!

The answer is NO.Even with a Dr's note and a medical condition, Substitutions on the dining plan are not permitted. For diabetics, TS restaurants offer sugar free desserts or fresh fruit

Nope! They'll come up with a diabetic friendly dessert option for you. If you have any kind of special dietary needs, you notify Special Diets ahead of time. Chefs (at least at the Disney owned restaurants) will work their magic and provide something diabetic friendly.

Even for medical reasons, trading desserts for appetizers on the dining plan is not allowed. But they will provide you with fruit or a sugar-free or substitute dessert. You just can't trade it for an appetizer.

From personal experience I can tell you no. My mom is a very brittle diabetic (on pills, plus two kinds of insulin four times a day). We've done the DDP and DxDDP with her. In every single restuarant she was offered fresh fruit and a sugar free option for dessert. On the basic DDP we did ask and was always told no, that they had options for diabetic desserts. We eat at alot of TS restaurants and every one told her no.

Thanks for the replys! I guess the answer is a resounding NO - which is what I thought it would be. Some WDW location serve a sugarfree cheesecake and it is very good. Like a said before my dessert will not go to waste. I don't know why restaurants think that fruit is a suitable substitute for diabetics - fruits are carbohydrates. I can have 2-3 carb servings per meal or 30-45 grams of carb. A medium banana is 2 carb servings or 30 grams. For me, I'm not going to use 2/3 of my carbs on a banana. Sorry for the carb lesson - it's my life.

I have a diabetic friend who has the same issues with the fruits and carbs. I don't know why all diabetics don't see it that way, maybe they aren't all as brittle. Anyway, she has asked for the cheese sampler for dessert before. I just don't remember if it was on a dining plan or not. That would certainly be worth a request.
