In our "talk with the Capt." Captian Henry mentioned that Capt. Hahns was no longer with the cruise line. Does anyone know why?

That's sad news. We met him on one of our cruises and he is a very nice man.
He'll be missed.

Is there any confirmation/statement on this?
Well, I haven't seen anything "official" but Capt. Henry definitely did state that Capt. Hans is no longer with DCL. The question put to him was very specific - the guy has cruised last year, had Capt. Hans, and asked, "is Capt. Hans still with Disney?" This was on the June 8th cruise at the Capt.'s question/answer session.

I'd be interested to hear confirmation or what happened. We cruised with Capt. Hans in January and I thought he had just come back after some extended time off.

When we attended our talk last fall, he seemed like such a "Disney kinda guy," and spoke very personally about why he liked the company and the cruise line.
He was pretty tall. Maybe he's moved to the NBA? ;)

Capt. Hans Mateboer was the Master of the Disney Magic on our 3/23/02 cruise. He explained how he was recruited by Disney representatives from his previous position as a Captain for Holland America. He seemed delighted to be part of Disney Cruise Line. According to my kids (ages 10 and 12), one of the real highlights of the kids' programs was when Capt. Hans met with the age 10-12 Oceaneers Lab kids, and answered their questions.
According to an old September 1996 news item at http://www.marinelink.com/sep96/mr09206.html , Capt. Hans Mateboer was the former master of Holland America’s Ryndam, Rotterdam, Statendam and Maasdam.

Maybe HAL wooed him back to them.
Was he the captain on the fire cruise? Do you think it had something to do with that?

I think he was the Captain on the "fire" or whatever Disney wants to call the "small incidient" cruise. Like the fire, we'll probably never know why he left.

Yes, Capt. Hans was the captain when the stack on the Disney Magic caught on fire in March 2003.
I agree that we'll never know if the fire and Capt. Hans' reported departure from DCL are in any way related.

It will be a shame if Captain Hans is gone. We met him a few times over the course of our many Disney cruises, and he was always a delightful person. Of course, we've also had the pleasure of meeting Captains John, Tom, and Henry (as well as Staff Captain Thord) and have been very impressed by them too...Disney has a real knack for hiring good captains.

I am not sure about this annoucement. I just spoke to a Cast member at reservations. I inquired as to who is scheduled to be Master of the ship this fall. Captain Hans is still scheduled as Master of the ship into the Fall.

Yipee! I hope that is true. I was hoping he would be the Capt. when we sail in Sept/Oct. We have met him before and look forward to meeting him again.

Robin, is the CM at reservations someone you know well personally? I only ask because I've found that often some people at reservations seem to know less than CC members and other DISers. Could it be possible she was looking at a schedule that had not been updated to reflect the change?

She wasn't answering from the top of her head. She was accessing from the internal computer system. She gave me each Captain's schedule until 2003.

That's GREAT news! I hope he is still with them. I was worried that perhaps she was accessing a not-yet-updated database, as can happen with computers. But it sounds like a reliable source.
