Last week while in Long Beach, CA I toured the Queen Mary. Upon returning home I showed DD4 a picture of her. She jumped for joy and said, "It's Mickey's Boat"! I hadn't thought about it, but the two ships do look very similar. I guess that's why I like the Magic- she reminds me of the great old ships of the 30's/40's.

I think that was Disney's intentions. In the book "The Making of the Magic" it describes how they tried several designs from very futuristic to the really bizarre. They thought the classic look from the 30/40's worked best for what they were trying to get across.
I'd say they did a fab job!!!

what do you mean the great ships of the 30's and 40's?.
i sailed on the Queen Mary in 1963 when i was 7 years old...
from New york to Southhampton England...
and what a ship she was.....
and boy what a great time i had....
there were about 3 children on board but my sister and i were the only ones in first class...
and that was when there were locked gates between the classes....only first class was allowed to roam the entire ship (though none of the adults ever bothered....the stewards would unlock the gates for me in my explorations)....
and my sister and i had a stateroom that seemed as big as a football field....certainly bigger than the living room of my house today..
and we had our own butler who 'drew our baths' every day...
and was at our beck and call....
boy...those were the days....
and by the way, cunard is building a QMII...her inaugural voyage is some time in 2003.....and supposedly those of us who sailed her predecessor will be on board that maiden voyage....
i'll be there assuming i survive this cruise....i'm not sure i can sail anymore with my motion sickness problem...
this is the first time i'm trying since my trans-atlantic voyages in 1963....

I've lived in So. CA all my life so the QM has almost always been a part of the "landscape". So, the similarity between the DCL ships and the QM was the first thing I noticed. I was really thrilled because I always wished we could sail the QM. How cool that they are going to create a "sequel"!!!
A little known or often forgotten bit of trivia is that Disney owned and operated the QM for several years, in its Long Beach port. Disney pitched a great idea for a theme park that would incorporate the whole waterfront area near the QM but the city of Long Beach voted it down. It is likely that these plans were what eventually became Tokoyo Disney Sea. :)

You're right, the QM was in service for 4 decades. Even into the 60's she was well maintained, and continued to provide fine service.
