I finally finished editing together a music video of our trip last month. You can take a look at it at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLOJ9HMkgAE

But it led me to a few questions.

Cast members usually wouldn't dance with us (although I only asked two or three). Are there guidelines that restrict them from this?

My daughters wanted to do silly faces with the princesses, but I told them not to. Do the princesses ever ham it up for the camera, or do they stay in regal character?

Disney allows camcording on almost all their attractions, while Universal tries to forbid it on almost all theirs. Anyone know why this is?

Is there a logical reason that you can't camcord in dark shows like Monster's Inc. Laugh Factory? Our daughter was featured on her birthday, but we didn't get video of it. (Flashbulbs I understand, but low lux camcorders don't make sense.)

Have any of the attractions ever tried selling videos of you on the ride? It was a little nerve-wracking carrying the camcorder on the roller coasters.

Thanks!

Love your video that was so cool how you did that!!!!

Haha cute video.

I think the reason why you can't film some of the shows is something do deal with a copyright.

Sooy I don't know any answers to your other questions but I would say my best bet to get cast members to dance with you would be during a parade so they look like they are doing their job. I have also herd that the character attendants will sometimes dance but I can't be sure because I have nevr asked them to.

Hope this helped.

Cast members usually wouldn't dance with us (although I only asked two or three). Are there guidelines that restrict them from this?

not that i'm aware of, although this would constitute show which means you shouldn't be likely to get anyone out of character to do something like this, most notably a TOT or HM CM for example. but on the flip side, i don't think they're obligated to dance for/with guests either.

My daughters wanted to do silly faces with the princesses, but I told them not to. Do the princesses ever ham it up for the camera, or do they stay in regal character?

they have to remain in character, although the walls are flexible to some extent. also, although not princesses, casting has gotten a lot more liberal and irreverent in newer characters such as the ugly stepsisters and the fairies who have a lot more freedom while remaining in character. you might be able to get ariel to make a fish face for example, but it should be hard to get mary poppins to do anything without being chastised for it.

Disney allows camcording on almost all their attractions, while Universal tries to forbid it on almost all theirs. Anyone know why this is?

Disney is actually the lone wolf in this one. Many amusement parks restrict the use of cameras on rides and that's primarily for liability reasons. They don't want (a) you dropping your camera and trying to hold them responsible and/or (b) your camera flying off and hitting someone else.

Is there a logical reason that you can't camcord in dark shows like Monster's Inc. Laugh Factory? Our daughter was featured on her birthday, but we didn't get video of it. (Flashbulbs I understand, but low lux camcorders don't make sense.)

the common factor is often attractions that feature video. sometimes it's a licensing issue (for example, the American Idol Experience), but ultimately it could simply be a matter of control (such as proprietary technology). Unless they've changed it, MI doesn't allow still photography either inside the theater.

Have any of the attractions ever tried selling videos of you on the ride? It was a little nerve-wracking carrying the camcorder on the roller coasters.

Ripe, Ride, Rockit at Universal will video tape riders. I don't believe any attractions do at Disney

I was smiling from ear to ear watching your video!!! :) Fabulous!!! :woohoo:

I want to add something: your video opened my eyes, in a way, about the fact that our WDW holidays are NOT supposed to be about that ADR at LeCellier or scoring a free room upgrade, etc. It's about FUN!!! Why are there not more families like yours....dancing and singing around, obviously having a blast? Why is it that I can easily recall SO MANY people in a bad mood, yelling at overtired children, cursing about wheelchairs, hogging space, cutting in lines and complaining about the weather and on and on and on......???? I don't think I've ever seen a family having as much fun together as you guys!

Thank you sooo much! I now have every intention of dancing down Main Street, U.S.A. in September!!!! :dance3:

I cannot answer your questions, but ... WOW! You've really inspired me! I did our scrapbook for our last trip last year, and, while I do like it, I think that a video would be a much better way to document our upcoming trip. It's something we could truly share with the rest of our family.

Can you tell me what kind of editing software you used? I've worked with Pinnacle, but that's about it. We've "upgraded" to a Mac, but I have no experience with editing on this machine (I still have my Windows computer, though) ...

THAT's how I want MY trip to be!!!!!!!

How did you keep the video camera dry? Wonder if it's worth picking up a Flip for the trip (ours is circa 2000) or would I be disappointed in the quality???

Did your kids get tired of you making them sing the song all over the parks???

AMAZING VIDEO!!

Got me all teary with excitement at my own upcoming trip - I was in two minds about whether to pack the camcorder as I'm coming by myself with my 6 year old son who is a total ham at the best of times, and I didn't know if it might be too much trying to juggle it all but I have SOOOOOOO made up my mind - take the camcorder!

The GREATEST souvenier you could have - long after the t-shirts have fallen apart in the wash and the stuffed toys have been packed away, you'll have the best memories ever.

We'll be dancing up Main Street!

Thanks for sharing, you've made my day.

PS: What a fun family!

Beautiful Video! I wish I could help with your questions...
Now, I am trying to figure out what we should do to document our family trip next week so I can put together something similar as you did!
Did you set up many of the takes?
I mean with you all singing "Life is a Highway" around all the parks and such... You did great planning or it just worked out! My DS- 8 also asked to watch your video again!
Thx for sharing...
Oh! & if you could also share your editing software and how you put this together...

Wow! Thanks for all the responses. It was a nice surprise this morning. I'll have to share these comments with my wife and kids when I get home.

First, thanks for answering all my questions. I've enjoyed all the comments except this one:

Hey, did you know that Off Kilter at the Canada pavilion is doing, Life Is A Highway, now? I kept expecting to see them in your video! :)

AARRGGHH!! We loved Off Kilter, but didn't see them on this trip. Wish we had. You're right it would have fit in perfectly. (We video-ed a little of us dancing in front of the band in Morocco, but that part of the tape went bad...maybe punishment from God for dancing with my seven year-old girl in front of a belly dancer.)

We were hoping this song might be playing at Lights, Motors, Action; but no such luck.

Anyway, a lot of you asked questions about the video. I'll try to organize my thoughts and post later today between patients.

Thanks again.

BUT...to answer one of your questions...my BIL shot video of the entire Turtle Talk with Crush show and it turned out great and no one said anything to him about it (he was front row center, so I'm sure they saw him)...although I got scolded for taking a flash photo of my DD BEFORE the show began! ;)

But it led me to a few questions.

Cast members usually wouldn't dance with us (although I only asked two or three). Are there guidelines that restrict them from this?
No ... but remember that CMs aren't there just for your enjoyment :goodvibes, they're actually WORKING. So their first duty is to their jobs. And it's hard to keep an eye on crowds or sell merchandise or control a parade route or manage a character if they're dancing with a guest. Also ... you're a perfect stranger, you want them to dance and then you're going to video tape it. Think about that. Those CMs have no idea what you're going to DO with that video. You could be making them look stupid, or putting captions underneath that are sarcastic or otherwise "un-Disney." You oculd be putting their faces on naked bodies and posting it on YouTube. They don't know. In this day and age, you can't be too careful. And ... well ... some of them maybe just can't dance!

My daughters wanted to do silly faces with the princesses, but I told them not to. Do the princesses ever ham it up for the camera, or do they stay in regal character?
The princesses will NOT do "silly faces" or ham it up. Not only is it out of character and inappropriate, but it can actually get them reprimanded. Again ... no one knows where those photos are going to end up. Disney is very very proprietary when it comes to its characters.

Disney allows camcording on almost all their attractions, while Universal tries to forbid it on almost all theirs. Anyone know why this is?
Just personal preference, probably.

Is there a logical reason that you can't camcord in dark shows like Monster's Inc. Laugh Factory? Our daughter was featured on her birthday, but we didn't get video of it. (Flashbulbs I understand, but low lux camcorders don't make sense.)
Many MANY guests abused this priviledge when camcorders became popular. Bright camcorder lights were everywhere. It's easier to simply say, "no video recording" than to say "no video recording unless your video camera doesn't have any lights that will bother anyone else." ;)

Have any of the attractions ever tried selling videos of you on the ride? It was a little nerve-wracking carrying the camcorder on the roller coasters.
I'm surprised they let you. On some of the coasters, that could be a huge hazard to other guests, should you lose your grip! :scared1:

Thanks again. This is the first time I've made a video on my own, so there was somewhat of a learning curve. I'll try to answer some of your questions and sum up some of my thoughts about camcording in the parks.

EQUIPMENT
I used a Sony Mini-DV tape camcorder for the dry stuff. I may upgrade to a hard drive camcorder. But nowadays, the internet is where video is heading, so I think your flip camera will do great. If you think you may want to show it on a large TV, though, you'll probably want a higher quality camera.

The wet and underwater video was shot on an Olympus Stylus 1030 SW. (SW as in short for "swim".) It's a great underwater camera we got last year. At the time, it was the only waterproof digital compact around. There are more out now if you Google "waterproof camera".

PREPARATION
We came up with the idea to do a music video just a couple of hours before we were heading to the airport. (We were tired of videotaping stuff, and then never watching it, and were considering not bringing the camcorder.) I quickly downloaded the song and tried to get it memorized on the flight out, making mental notes about what video would go with different parts of the music.

CAUTION: If you want make a video for YouTube, BE FOREWARNED: Many songs are now being muted by YouTube because of a fallout with Warner Music Group (WMG) who wants more money from YouTube. Thankfully, my song wasn't affected, but I didn't even know there was an issue until I got back. (Google "YouTube WMG" for more info.) Make sure your song isn't owned by Warner.

DANCING WITH THE KIDS
Most of the questions were about the taping itself. I'll try to get back to that after I finish up my work day. (Gotta go. I get more icy stares being the boss than I ever got being an employee!)

Absolutely loved it. So cute. I am really impressed the boys went along with it. Your family must get along well. I can't wait to show my kids, although I know they will then want one and I am not sure I can get my DH to dance or sing anywhere. There will be families dancing and singing all over disney now! Can't wait to hear all the details of what you used to put it all together. I may have to invest in a better camera and some software!

Great video! It has inspired us for our next trip.

To help answer your question, the best place to get cast members to dance with you is at the extra hours dance parties. We have video our our kids dancing with Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Pluto, Goofy and other Disney playhouse characters at the Disney Playhouse block party at Hollywood Studios. They do it every night they are for EMH and alot of people don't know it's there. We also have video of them dancing with the support staff that comes with the characters. Since they are there to dance, they dance.

Magic Kingdom sometimes has block parties with Lilo and Stitch and other characters and I have seen cast members dancing there as well.

Hope that helps.

The Hollywood Studios party is an absolute must for us one every trip. They characters do several dances with the kids, including Hokey Pokey, Macarena, electric slide, break dancing. They dance to popular music - Hannah Montana and other Disney stars. When Pluto and Goofy come out, they play "Who let the dogs out."

Pure Disney fun for the kids. Looking forward to our September trip. By the way, from one Big 12 state to another - Go Huskers!

Loved your video you have a beautiful family! my kids love that song and wanted to watch it over and over! Very clever idea! I just wanted to add that we got Tigger Pooh and Eyeore to dance with us in the shop in England at epcot while the "beatles" ( name escapes me right now) were playing outside, one of the hightlights of our last trip.

This was absolutely precious! I watched it first and then called my 8 year old son in to watch it with me again. He loved it!:yay: He laughed all the way through it. We leave next weekend and I believe you have influenced our trip! I'm sure I'll be seeing "copies" of your video during our trip from my son.:dance3:

You guys are a lovely family. Thanks for sharing yourselves with us DISers and our families!

I got a question after my entire family watched your video a half a dozen times ... do you mind if anyone copies your idea for their own trip?!

My DH is playing with the idea of 2 songs ..the National Lampoon theme (Holiday road) and Life is a highway :rotfl2:

Just want to make sure you don't mind if anyone else attempts the same kind of thing using your idea

I'm going to show it to my DH (AKA our video expert) and tell him that when we get back in Dec I want one of those! LOL! I guess we'll have to decide on a song and start preparing! :)

Absolutely not! I'm still a little surprised by the response here. It's been fun to read the comments to the kids. Hopefully, we can start a new tradition of dancing videos.

However, YOU ATE YOUR SON'S MICKEY EAR!!! What kind of parent are you??? :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

We watched the video again last night, and when we got to that scene, my kids turned to my wife and said, "What kind of parent are you??" It's their new catch phrase.

Again, I'll try to get some of the production questions in a bit. It's going to be 102 in Tulsa today, and I want to get the yard done while it's still a balmy 93.

Everyone needs a video like this, so when you tell people you going back to Disney World and they say, "AGAIN, why do you guys always go to Disney!" You could pull this video out and play it. The video sums up why we return to Disney.

Add another few fans from our house! Great video!! So much fun!

I have to say that one of my favorite things was the fact that in almost every shot where you're dancing in the streets not a single person in the background is looking at you as if it's out of the ordinary. Just goes to prove that having fun like you guys are is "normal" Disney behavior!

:dance3:

I toatally agree!! I usually don't watch peoples youtube videos, but after reading about it in another post it got me curious. I am the photo/video person for our group, and I have to say I would NEVER have thought that up. It was awesome!!!

That was AWESOME. I am truly impressed.

Now I have to find a camcorder. For some reason I can't get the movies from my camcorder to my computer. It's a Panasonic and you have to use their software...for which the driver doesn't work with Vista. I can pull part of each video off, but not all of it. Perfect reason to get a new camcorder.

LOVE the underwater footage too.

Thanks so much for this. I'm dying to show it to my kids, but I would inevitably hear "I want to go to Disney!" and they don't know we're going in September. So I'll save it for after the trip.

Bookmarking the video and this thread now!

My family and I absolutely loved your video!! I have seen a number of other great video's done similar to this but yours is by far the best I've seen. You have set the bar and it is my goal now to see if I can do one like this on one of our future trips and only hope I can at least get it in the ball park of yours.

Which video editing software do you use? I have used Pinnacle Studio v11 for several years and been very happy with it. There were a couple of things you did that I'm not sure Pinnacle Studio can do. I either need to look into new software or do some studying on Pinnacle.

Thanks!

That is FABULOUS!!! I saw it on Facebook, and had to find out who you were! You really need to write a trip report!!! I think it would be fun to read!

My daughter, Lydia, made me play your video about 5 times!!! She loved it too!

Wow. Thanks again for all the responses and links. I'll start with hands-down my favorite quote:

Made it back to watch it, and just have to say, you ROCK! (and your DH is kinda hot! ;) )

Given my obvious middle age, I assume your heat index is on a curve. If I am actually hot, I'm not exactly "egg on a frying pan" hot; I'm more like "heating pad to your sore back" hot.

Here's where I left off.

Okay, continuing on.

"HOW DID YOU PICK THE SONG?"
My wife nixed "Highway to Hell".

DANCING WITH THE KIDS
The only real "work" in the parks was the lip syncing and the dancing. Everything else was just standard camcording and photos of a family allegedly having fun. We really only worked on the video for maybe fifteen minutes a day, sometimes less. The rest of the day was chasing fastpasses and taking naps while riding "The Land".

As a few of you noticed, no one ever seemed to mind that we were dancing. We looked pretty strange a few times, for instance at the Nemo sign where our girls are dancing. There was a line of parents taking pictures of their kids, each making them stand still and smile. When I put my girls up there, I yelled, "GO NUTS! GO! GO! DANCE HARDER! TEN MORE SECONDS!! FIVE MORE SECONDS!! YEAHH!!" We got a few polite looks of confusion. I flashed back a polite look of it-would-take-too-long-to-explain-this and walked on.

We had almost no organization to the dancing itself. I think it would probably look less real if we actually knew how to dance. If we saw an interesting backdrop, I'd send everyone over to dance. Within a day, the kids were telling ME where they needed to dance. Each of their suggestions was met with a swift swat to the bottom, and a stern warning to never upstage my creative genius. (A little parenting tip I picked up from Joe Jackson.)

There were a few times when the kids were a little too grumpy, and we skipped some of the ideas we had. The Flaming Family Pyramid of Doom simply wasn't to be.

LIP SYNCING
We did it all without an iPod or any other musical cue. We just started singing and hoped we got the tempo right, and it usually matched when I was editing. There's one clip where I very subtly slowed my daughter down to 90%. I wish I could do that in real life.

I DON'T DO MATCHING T-SHIRTS
Some of the biggest smiles on our little ones were induced with a promise of a giant popsicle afterward. Bribery is mandatory, especially for teenagers. As for our thirteen year-old, we knew he wouldn't be thrilled with dancing, so we tried to incorporate his personality into the project. When my wife came up with the "I Don't do Matching T Shirts", he was intrigued. When he found out he would get to choke his little brother, he was all in.

He also got to do a lot of the taping and, therefore, bossing around the younger kids. We actually filmed a scene of him holding a sign that said, "My parents are making me do this". I ended up leaving it out. He was having so much fun in the rest of the video, it didn't seem to make sense. (Staying aloof and disaffected can wear a thirteen year-old out. He's promised next time to stay in character all week long.)

I'll post again soon with a few thoughts about organizing all the video and editing it, if you're interested.

Again, thank you all for your kind comments. It helps me remind my wife that she didn't do too bad.

No real photography background, other than taking tons of pictures and hoping 2-5% turn out. In fairness, I did help out with some music video projects back in medical school. But it was mostly in the writing and holding the camcorder. This is the first time I've edited. I'll try to post a little about iMovie and editing soon.

Just another message of "KUDOS to the Wolf's!" Waaay cool. Even the 13 year old was cool, especially when he was strangling his little brother. And Zoe is too cute for words, much less video tape!

So, if you don't mind, tell me about iMovie. We've had our Mac for over a year now, and I haven't done much photo editing on it (although iPhoto is great!), let alone think about video editing. I do have some experience on the Windows front with Pinnacle. Did you find iMovie user intuitive/easy to use, or did it take a bit to figure it out?

Thanks!

so coool. good job:thumbsup2

Awesome thread! I love editing videos! I've been wanting to do a video were we (and anyone who wants to join in) dance and sing to Walkin' Right Down the Middle of Main Street USA from the Disneyland Fun Sing Along video in Main Street USA. Now that would be epic! Unfortunately, no one in the family wants to do it with me. :rotfl:

...blasting through the door at Test Track
...the T-Shirt

He also got to do a lot of the taping and, therefore, bossing around the younger kids. We actually filmed a scene of him holding a sign that said, "My parents are making me do this". I ended up leaving it out. He was having so much fun in the rest of the video, it didn't seem to make sense. (Staying aloof and disaffected can wear a thirteen year-old out. He's promised next time to stay in character all week long.)

Haha - that reminds me of the Royal Carribean commercials with the girl the family is videoing and she suddenly smiles and is having a good time till she see's them looking at her :)

I still want to show my family this - not sure if I could get them to do it, but I'm going to ask - I must say this was so awesome (yep had to say it again :) )

One question...why the Oprah shot??? Aspiring to be discovered??? hmmmm?

Ha! Just had to jump in on this one. Not exactly. I make fun of my wife's Opraphilia. When my wife is sick, the kids ask her if they can turn on Oprah for her. There's a couple of friends of mine with similar stories here in Oprahoma, so when we were standing by the statue, it just seemed appropriate to start dancing.

You have to remember, this was supposed to be a little video to share with our friends and family until I posted it here.

NOW HAVING SAID THAT: OPRAH, IF YOU'RE OUT THERE, I HAVE NOTHING BUT ABSOLUTE RESPECT FOR YOU AND ALL OPRAHLINGS THROUGHOUT THE PLANET! (She's very powerful, you know.)

Wow! Nice job on the video - my son and I have watched it about three times and we see new things we love every time. This last time was everyone doing "The Sprinkler" in one scene - my son is 7, and that's his favorite move.

I have a couple of technical questions though. I love to do projects like that for my family - ball season highlights, end of school year, vacations, etc. - so I just bought a Mac a couple of months ago. I love it. And I love how easy iMovie is to learn.

I noticed on YouTube that you used a camcorder with the mini DV tape. I'm assuming you have a firewire port on your Mac? If not, did you use a conversion software? I have years of mini DV footage I can't use unless I somehow convert. For everything recently, I've used the Flip. It works fine, but doesn't have zoom quality like my mini DV camcorder.

Sorry to get so detailed, but your work is incredible, and I'd love to be able to try some projects like that myself!!

Again - GREAT JOB!!!

YEP I'm another one that's watched it over & over & shared it! AWESOME! I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to be able to do something like that - not necessarily the dancing @ WDW but the incredible video editing stuff ...I'd LOVE to know if there's a userfriendly version for PC - but I'm afraid not...and when I see that this was done by an incredibly smart person (doc) then I give up all hope...LOL and YEP! YOu could make a killing if you could do that for people @ WDW - if they could pick their song & you out it all together with thier footage (even without singing) it could be HUGE. Go ahead see how many disers would buy you could probably quit your day job...LOL

Hope to see you on the news in the next week or so - it won't be long til they pick it up as the latest viral on youtube....just remember the disers that linked it for you when you make you millions! :lmao:

From what I have seen from Wolfes fantastic video Ulead would be able to do everything involved and create all the effects you need. :thumbsup2

I showed this to my family last night. My DH was like - yeah let's do one or a few, lol and my DS11 too!

DD17 is less than thrilled, but DH said we'll figure out a way to make her - LOL!

So we are going to try a few and maybe not necessarily lip sync them all - do more silly dancing in them. He definately wants to do Twist and Shout by the Beatles (from Ferris Buelher's day off).

So now we are thinking of some ideas.

I'd love to see a bunch of new video montages - I can't believe DH is wanting to do this. He was so impressed at how much fun you looked like you were having!

Thanks!

First of all, fantastically wonderfully great!

Second of all, will you come over to my house and show me how to work iMovie? I can't seem to figure it out nearly that well! I'm in Owasso, just come up the road.

You truly captured the Magic of Disney and what it means to so many families! And even though I may not be able to replicate it, in my mind and heart I can now totally envision my family in that video!

Thank You So Much!:flower3:

Wow. Thanks again for all the responses and links. I'll start with hands-down my favorite quote:

Given my obvious middle age, I assume your heat index is on a curve. If I am actually hot, I'm not exactly "egg on a frying pan" hot; I'm more like "heating pad to your sore back" hot.

Here's where I left off.

OK - so I'm a total dork...lol...thought I was talking to your wife! ;~) I stand by my statement though...you're a good lookin' guy...probably to vibe that you put out having so much fun! Yeah...that's it... ;) ...off to crawl in a hole now...:upsidedow
