View Full Version : Use all your points each use-year?

I am curious if, on average, people use all their points exactly, always go over and have to borrow, or end up with points left over at the end of their use-year that end up dying. This year I will be stuck with a handful of points I can't do anything with.

Even with banking, points carry over and you can be stuck if not careful or just lucky!

Just wondering if others are in the same boat.

Thanks.... Paul

I usually bank points every year, then plan a big trip with friends to use them up. I've never lost any points.

We're always borrowing so getting stuck with points is not an issue with us.:)

I usually use my points for the current year or bank. I have never lost any points. But I voted borrow, because last year we took a 9 day trip in a GV and I had to borrow:cool1:

We usually use all of ours. There have been years where we have banked and borrowed to do big trips in one year. I am actually renting some of our 2009 points out because we received hotel stays as incentives for buying into VGC, so we have 3 weeks of stays we can use this year and next year.

I lost a few points one year. I had added on and they wouldn't let me bank, now they do. I donated a stay to a charity, but there were still about 3 points that I lost. Now, before we add on late in the UY, I always ask if we can bank the points.

We're always borrowing, that why we had added on, we needed more points!

Well one year I banked 2 points, and another 7, but generally I find myself borrowing (especially for the AKV stays), or transferring in rented points from another DVCer.

Even after addonitis a few times, we're still borrowing all of the time.... But we have awsome vacations!

I'm in the middle - sometimes bank, sometimes borrow but lately mostly borrow. Depends on the plan for the year. Last year I banked but then decided to take a trip to DL so I had to borrow. I've already used all 2009, borrowed 25 2010.

Well, at least that was how it was our past 2 trips to WDW and staying in our villa. However, that will no longer be a problem! We got more points! :cool1:

We lost less than 20 points one year but it was only because we thought they were banked and they were not.

I would never dream of letting even a sinlge point die though knowingly. Never ever. They are much too valuable and that is just a total waste. If I can't use them and my family couldn't use them I would either try to rent whatever was left or even just give them to someone who could use them.

Agreed. The option I need is also not there. Inevitably one year I use less than my year allotment and the next year I use more. In 2010 I am going to intentionally try to save around 150 of my points for 2011 so I can have more options for my 20th anniversary.

No good option for me either. Some years I bank, some years I borrow.
It averages out to using all my points, no more, no less, so that's what I voted.

I picked the first option - it was the closest fit.

I don't "always" borrow (which was the wording, I think) but I usually do. I have banked my AKV points because there are less of them and I want to maximize them every 3rd year. I've never let a point expire without using it (we don't have that many to begin with :goodvibes)!

This is us too. I voted "use all the points every year" because we either make a reservation or bank the points. We don't lose them....so far!

We too are similar in that most times we use what we have, but there have been times when we have used less and times that we need to borrow. This year we may bank up to 31 pts. However, we still are not within the 7 month window for one of our trips and plan to try and stay somewhere else and thus will use more points.

After two add ons and 500 points I still borrow to the max. Another add on?

I bank every year too! It's just that I still didn't use all my 2007 points, which were banked. After using and selling banked 2007 points, I still have a few left over that are dying shortly in my 2008 UY. I am way behind and have no time for another trip.

My motto..... "work gets in the way of life!"

Guess I need to take a bigger room next time just to burn points!

We typically take 3 vacations a year. We could probably squeeze out 3 Disney vacations with the number of points we have each year but for us that is too much of the same. What happens (very often) is that one year we will take only one DisVac and then the next we load up. In the last 12 months we have been to Disney only one time. In the next 12 months we will be at WDW 3 times and HHI 1 time.

This is close to what we do, too. We do 3 trips per year but in years where we bring relatives with us I may end up borrowing. Sometimes I end up borrowing and banking in the same year.

We also bank every year, then borrow if we take any short-notice trips in the last 4 months. It's a good way to ensure that you don't lose points.

Yeah the only downside that I can tell is that it is slightly harder to read your point page on the DVC site.

DH and I were always running a deficit- borrowing for future trips. So we added another 130 points last year. However, we still are borrowing. So we decided that after our trip in Jan 2010 we are not going back to WDW until 2011- to allow our points to reset. We have been going multiple times a year so it seems like a stretch to wait over a year for another trip.:lmao:

I lost 5 points the first year till I completely understood the whole banking etc. thing. Since then, I'm always at a deficit borrowing from the next year. I wish I could add on but I don't want to pay additional maint. so I keep resisting the constant urge to add on!

We are usually the opposite. Almost every year it seems we have banked points from the previous year that are in a must-use situation. When we signed up they gave us an extra year's points. I think they thought we would never be able to burn an additional 300 points in less than 6 months. They underestimated us apparently but since then we almost always have a surplus. This suits me fine. I like knowing I can go on a spontaneous vacation (if I can get a room).

This year has been the trickiest because I was so busy last year it was hard to get away. As a result we had 240 must use by December 1st points and we will have almost as many next year from this year's bank. Oh the horror of multiple Disney trips! ;)

I essentially use all my points each year.

When we first joined DVC we got an extra use year's worth of points. We spent most of those on a splurge week at AKV concierge last year, so now we have 17 extra points left over, which I banked.

In the past, for the time of year we like to visit, we owned enough points (160) for 6 nights in a 1BR savannah view at AKV. Now with the 2010 points re-allocation, we'll be around 2 or so points short each year for the same thing. So once we use up our 17 extra points, we'll probably borrow the 2 or so extra points we need for a while until we do an add-on.

Could not vote. It depends on the contract and the year. Sometimes I am banking, sometimes borrowing and it varies from year to year and contract to contract. I've never lost points and don't expect to except for possibly some stray points at the end of my OKW and BCV terms.

I do rent out the extras, but renters don't usually take up all I have left. Then what?

An example... this year I was left with about 40 points banked form my 2007 UY. I was able to find a renter that wanted most, but not all of them. Now I am stuck with less than 10 points. What can I do with them? I can't transfer as they are banked points. I can't sell them because there's not much you can do with so little... What option is left? Am I missing something?

We bought enough points to be able to stay in a 1BR for 10 nights every other year. On the alternate years, we go on a cruise or vacation somewhere else. I love WDW but I'm not going to use all of my vacation there.

We are fortunate that we have enough points to end up banking every year.

Letting any points die would really push me over the edge. :scared1:

I've never let any of my points go unused. We somehoem manage to use them all every year.

Of course, some contracts have their points banked and others borrowed, to effectively use them all at the right time.

I didn't vote because none of the choices really fits our scenario. We use banking and borrowing both within most use years. I 12 years, I've never had to "lose" points. I am faced with a little bit of a different scenario this time, because next year my 2 banked AKV points will need to be reallocated to a 7 month OKW ressie when I add a night 7 months out. Frankly, if I forget and end up losing those two points, it wont be that big a deal either.

I think they thought we would never be able to burn an additional 300 points in less than 6 months. We are "plagued" by the same type of "problem." ;)

When we bought our first contract (resale) it came with 149 banked points. Five years later, we are still banking every year because of that carryover. Some years more, some years less, depending on our usage. This year, we banked so many points we're going to have to pay attention to our "use or lose" banked points, but we should be fine.

It's a good "problem" to have!

I didn't vote as there wasn't really an option that applied. Sometimes we bank points, sometimes we borrow points. But we haven't lost ANY points yet. (Knock on wood!)

We take 2 trips in one UY, then skip the next UY to vacation in Maui. As a result, we always use banked, current and borrowed points for the WDW UY trips.

In the past we had no banked points, but then we rented out our vacation rental in Maui one time in exchange for DVC points and that plumped up our account. So in 2009, our non WDW UY, we are hoping to stay a few nights at GCV if our WL comes thru.

We hoped to lose 3 points a few years ago only because we were on a WL for a SV at BWV for the first night of our vacation. The rest of the nights were in SV, but the WL never came thru and we stayed in a PV room (upgraded to BW view!) for that first night. If the WL had come thru, we would have ended up with 3 points that would have expired.

---Paul in Southern NJ

Book another vacation. That always cures my leftover point problem.

You could add some 2008 points and rent out just enough to get them used.

You need to make yourself a simple little chart that shows your banked points each year for each contract. The key is to always use AT LEAST that many points out of that contract in the banked year. Then the unused points can be banked, but they will be new points, not banked points. The confusion comes with multiple contracts at different resorts.

This year I had 2 points to bank from my AKV contract. Our contract there is small, so I need to use 3 years worth of points for the ressies we usually want there. I wont be using my 2010 points from AKV, because I'll be banking them into 2011 and borrowing from 2012 to make a ressie for 2011 with those points. That leaves the 2 points from 2009 hanging around in 2010's use year. I will make a 7 month window booking at OKW for 1 night at the end of our March 2010 trip, but I wont book it until the 7 month window. That way I can have the 2 AKV banked points allocated to the ressie at OKW. I wont be able to use those two points to replace a ressie made at the 11 month mark, so I'll just wait for the 7 month window for that last night.

We bought in 2006 after just returning from a summer trip and banked the 2006 points. We use that as our buffer. We own180 points and will be banking 129 this year. We will try to keep a little extra in the bank from year to year in case we need a little more than the 180 for the year.
We have exciting changes in family dynamics as my son is getting married in less than a month. In addition my daughter is two years from attending college. I foresee trips in the future with just me and my wife going mutliple times per year in a studio or everyone going for a short stay in a 2 bdr with everyone. I look forward to both!
