We are learning sign language!

Our daughter can't talk. The school is working with augmentative communication but about a month ago i bought a sign language dictionary. The whole family is learning to sign. Kelsey can't sign yet but the family is enjoying learning a new way to communicate. My 3 yr old< ryan loves to sign mommy. I believe kelsey is understanding our signing more than she can use the movements herself.
The kids favorite sign is disney of course.

Congratulations on learning a new language.
Children normally understand a lot more (and a lot faster) than they can use what they understand to communicate, whether with words or with signs. So I'm sure you are right about Kelsey's understanding.

It's wonderful that the whole family is learing to sign, it will make such a difference to your daughter's enjoyment and inclusion in family life.

I'm just curious as to what the sign is for 'Disney'. We are from the UK, I am partially deaf, but in the last couple of years we too have been learing basic sign (BSL) as a family, just to help communications a little, and I'm sure the kids (and me too!) would love to know what the sigh is for our favourite place! :D

Mazzy, the sign for disney in BSL is clench both fists, put them on either side of youre head(like mickey mouse ears!)

In ASL (hmm, I hope I can describe this well enough), the sign for Disney is like the sign for 'candy.' Make a D (that's an ASL d - you do it by pointing your index finger straight up and touching the tips of your other fingers to your thumb - see how it forms a 'd'?). Now put the thumb of the D where your dimple would be and wiggle your hand.

Did that make any sense at all? I also tried to describe the sign for Epcot elsewhere, but I'm not sure it worked.

Amphigory I have seen the interpreters use this sign but placed at the temple area not the dimple. Makes more sense since Disney was a male.
I have also seen the d on the back of the hand plus the sign for world used by Orlando deaf people.
And I have seen kids just use the flattened "O" at the side of the head as in Mickey Mouse.

That's wonderful that your daughter is learning ASL. My son was non-verbal up until about 3 1/2 and we we doing a lot of signing. It was amazing how quickly he caught on.
