I'm positive it's margarine. That's what my Mom ( age 86!) used to call it anyway :goodvibes

I inherited many of grandmother's recipes, she just passed away at 99 in April, and it is margerine. Must come from the depression era. It's a term used for oils. Years ago, I won scrabble and $100 bc no one believed when I said it was a word, so I bet 'em and won!

My grandmother always called margarine "oleo" and all her recipes are written that way - it's faster to write than margarine. ;) I can remember seeing packaging wtih oleomargarine on it. I believe that it's just an abbreviation of sorts for the full name.
