Congrats, Maura, for placing in your first-ever tri!

I've been plugging away. Trying to be more consistent with my weekday runs since the DL Half is less than 10 weeks away. We'll be visiting my husband's family next week, though, so I need to figure out how to sneak out for my weekday runs as well as where to go to get in my 9- and 7-mile long runs. Should be interesting.

Hi Goofs!

Started July with a nice easy 10 miles. Doing the 2 long runs a week is definately making them easier and easier. Of course it helped that it was about 5 degrees cooler this morning.

Kim - I find that visiting my inlaws makes my long runs easier to get in. I love the excuse to get away and collect my thoughts. I love my in laws, but the running is a nice way to get a few minutes to myself. Good luck!

Lisa - I hope life is treating you well and that you are all getting adjusted to the new schedule. I can't imagine what that must be like. I wonder if it is better or worse that it is happening in summer? I miss seeing your post every morning.

Take care all!

If it wasn't up, I was going to go with "Goofs bring the HEAT in July!".

Got in 6.7 miles in 63 minutes...pretty nice pace, and we talked and laughed the whole way.

Have a great day Goofs, nice to see you back Lisa!

I have an hour run, followed by an hour swim...followed by a round of golf.

Also, I need a ruling from the judges:

How much of the time in the round should count for minutes for the team? I will be walking the course, carrying the clubs...surely SOME of the time should count?

Have a goofy day!

Morning Goofs. HAPPY 4th OF JULY!!!!

I am working on updating my spreadsheet totals and will get that posted ASAP. Although that may be tomorrow...:lmao: I hope everyone can forgive me for my lateness and lack of posting.

Cecilia: It is better that this change comes in the summer as the kids are home and I am not having to worry about school transport for now. It is worse that it is in the summer as beach days are limited and I am missing out on a lot of practices and such. So this is a 50/50 split right now. It will get harder in the fall/winter months with school starting and bad weather to follow. Right now, I am not happy with my decision and I am hoping that will change.

Mike: Love the thread name, we can use that for August. As for us here in Maine, it has been cool and rainy for the entire month of June so turning up some heat would be good. June was the 5th month with the most rain ever in our history with over 8.5 inches of rain. :sad2: Needless to say this has been a long month for everyone.

Everyone else, :grouphug: and

I have been working out and trying to stay on track. Most of my workouts have been lunch time walks or lifting at home. I am happy to get in what I can. Most of my days are getting up a little early, either lifting or doing a walk tape with the rain keeping me inside, working all day and flying from work to a kidlet practice or game. Dinner is later than I would like and then it just starts all over again. I am not liking the job, not liking the hours, not liking the drive and not liking well pretty much anything in general. I am going to try and stick it out for the summer and then I may switch back if there is a position open (they filled mine already) or I will have to go to another company to work. At least I have options. It would be great to win the lottery, quit my job and start my own gym...

Take care everyone and I hope you enjoy your 4th. It is raining here (no shock lately) so our fun is limited to indoors...again...

Hello Goofs,

I am still hanging out here in Michigan. I am still trying to get as much exercise in when I can, when I am not working. I will keep the spreadsheet updated but not posting on the thread much, but will try to do better as time allows.

Hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th, the weather here in MI has been bad all week, hard to believe it is July. At least we saw the sun today and the temps were in the 70s.

See ya for now, Lynn

Long time, no replies, but I have kept up the daily running. We just got back from Chicago-land earlier tonight, so I'll try to update the spreadsheet tonight; otherwise, it won't be until tomorrow.

Hi everyone, I hope you had a fun and safe 4th. We had a good time.

My day started with a local annual 5K. This was my first time running this race. I was looking forward to it as it is the 5th of 6 races needed to complete the circuit of our running club. I was also hoping to beat my 5K PR of 25:57 set in May. This was a much flatter course and most of it on dirt. My goal was to go sub 25:00.

It was a very cool, overcast morning and 186 people lined up at the start. I gave the imaginary evil eye to my arch-nemesis who lined up right in front of me at the starting line.

When the race started, he bolted out ahead at a pace I knew I couldn't contend with. Shortly after, I lost sight of him. I just don't seem to stand much of a chance against him at the short distances so I turned my energy to just trying to set a new PR. So...

The Good
I started sprinting when I saw the finish line and ended up finishing 24:22! In addition to beating my 5K PR, I also beat my overall PR pace of 8:10 from a 2-miler in December. At 7:52, this was the first time I've gone below the 8:00 pace which felt amazing.

The Bad
Even though I just had the best race of my life, I still finished 5th and last in my age group (35-39).

The Ugly
I passed a lady with about 400m left and then started my sprinting with around 100m to go. As I got close, I heard footsteps behind me but I just couldn't run any faster. She passed me and beat me by one second. Arrrrrrrrgh. This is the second time this has happened to me, the last time being my only DLF. I really need to work on my sprints!

The Uglier
I checked out the results and found my arch-nemesis finished just 10 seconds ahead of me. I swear he does this just to get at me. This is the fourth consecutive race we've finished within a minute of each other and he has taken three of them. Oh, well. At least he gives me something to laugh at and to work toward. If he ever knew how badly I wanted to beat him...first, he'd recommend I get help as he still has no idea I even exist...but then he'd probably work even harder and I'd never beat him so I'd better keep this on the down-low.

Well, I pulled another stupid stunt this week: I rearranged my long runs because of next weeks triathlon (I am running for a relay team.) Problem is that I didn't take out any of my shorter runs to account for the difference in miles. On top of that, I ran pretty darn fast (for me) at the Peachtree Road Race on Saturday. So my 16 miler on Sunday got pretty painful by mile 10. Usually when I stop running, the pain stops too. Not this time. My legs were still quivering so hard that an hour later in church, I couldn't stand up without help.

hopefully with some rest and a lighter schedule this week, I will be recovered before next weeks tri. My team wants to win the relay division! (so why did they ask me to run? I am an over 40 woman which puts us in the Master's Coed division)

The Uglier
I checked out the results and found my arch-nemesis finished just 10 seconds ahead of me.

I love to hear the tales of you and your arch nemesis! Its like a comic book story. Just remember that the good guy wins in the end! Way to go on your PR.

Hi Goofs! I kept wondering why you guys weren't updating until I realized, DUH! It's a new month!

So anyways,

Last week I was dealing with shin splints so I decided to do the next week or so on the eliptical and the bike in additional to getting to my TKD class tomorrow. I did 5 miles on the eliptical yesterday. The first 30 minutes was one of the pre-planned workouts and the second 30 (on a full body machine) was a cardio workout following the machine's guidelines. Tonight will be another 30-40 minutes on the eliptical and then a pilates class. I've never taken the pilates class at my current gym, so hopefully I enjoy it.

Steve I love hearing the stories about you and your arch nemesis. I say kick it up to a point where you are regularly finishing ahead of him and he will take notice!

Lisa Good luck with the job! I went through a really tough period about a year ago where I'm at. There started to be rumblings about additional management positions opening up so I stuck it out and got the promotion finally. I love my new job (and really should get off the boards and get back to work)!

Mike - what exactly is spousing? I don't think I have ever heard that verb. LOL.

I have to say I am having trouble remembering what DH looks like. Between work and tri training, we never see him. He sneaks in at odd times and eats all the food in the house. He has left no time for spousing. I think I am gonna tell him about this after the triathlon on Sunday.

As for me, I am still trying to recover from Sunday's long run. I got up early, got all dressed to run but I haven't gotten my butt out the door. I just sit here and watch the temperature rise....sigh.

Whew, there the first post is updated with team totals and totals for the month of June. I am now realizing that I have not been moving much as I only had 1 post for July...:rolleyes1 Time to get moving again!!

Joanne, OF COURSE YOU CAN COME BACK SILLY!!! We take any and all former Goofs back into our circle :grouphug: Welcome back!!

Cecilia, how do you do it? I know you all ask me that question but, hello, tri training, trip to Europe, kids in sports, life in general. You are completely amazing!! PS I am trying to get DD14 to friend you so she and your DD can start talking!!

Liz and Patrick,

Mike, Spousing, you crack me up! :lmao: Hmmm, maybe I should introduce DH to that word, spousing. Almost makes it sound sporty...

Everyone else! :yay: well okay I haven't been moving that much so :flower3:

As for me, work is taking it's toll on my working out. The endless rain here is also starting to wear me down. June was the 5th most rainy month in our history and July is following in its footsteps. Yesterday was a record low for the state at 58 degrees. I know you think you would take that over heat but, trust me, my house smells like a sponge and it is cold in here! I need to turn over a new leaf, before the leaves turn, which could be any day at this rate!!

So, I pulled out my strict clean eating plan and I am making a new comitment to myself, not any race and not anyone, just me this time. I hope you all will hold me to it. By the end of July, I will be back on my normal running schedule. Promise. :upsidedow

Have a great Wednesday everyone!!

I guess I'm injured Goofs. :headache: I went to orthopedic today. They did x-rays on my shin and it showed no fracture, but he feels I have medial tibial stress syndrome??? He said this was a precursor to a stress fracture. I was given a steroid shot, anti inflammatory drugs and was told to ice three times a day and buy a compression sleeve for my calf. I can't run for a week and then I have to start back slowly. Starting at 50%, then the next week increasing. If I experience any pain I'm to call him and he is going to do a MRI. He wanted to give me a steroid pack, but I had a bad experience with that before when I got poison ivy - didn't sleep for like a month and my blood pressure was sky high forever... I was kinda thinking about signing up for a half this fall to try to give me some motivation, but now maybe not. :rolleyes1

And Cecilia, you rock! :thumbsup2

Hey everybody!

I'm back home after my week away at my Mom's and in Camden, Maine. Weather was cool and rainy most of the time. We did some hiking in Camden Hills State Park, which was nice, albeit mucky. And the beautiful views of Penobscot Bay were entirely shrouded in fog and mist. Oddly enough, it didn't bother me at all that I couldn't see anything.

Anyway, took the rest of the week off and have many chores to do. One of which--I will do tomorrow since it will be exactly six months away--is to sign up for the Disney marathon. I have finally committed to do it. My plan for the remainder of the summer is to train for the RFTT 10 k (building back up a base to run 3x/week), and then the marathon plan which I have picked uses your most recent 10 k time to base your training on.

Of course, in true vacation form, I have done nothing over the last two weeks, other than 2 days of hiking. And I know that watching the TDF doesn't count!

Shan Sorry to hear about your injury...hope you heal soon and don't get too discouraged.

Everyone else...will catch up later and keep up the good training.

Maura

Shan!

Bummer about the shin. Glad you had it checked out though. As for training, why not look into a few 5K and 10k runs to keep yourself motivated. You wanted to work on speed anyway so just start slow, keep the mileage low and work on getting a solid base before you start adding miles.

The fall is littered with tons of little 5K and 10K races that would provide plenty of motivation without forcing a training plan that is going to risk another injury.

Add work out time with some cross training until you are ready to tackle another half.

Hang in there.

question, lately, after a run, I am craving salt like you wouldn't believe! I am trying very very hard to stay away from chips...any suggestions on a salty snack that has at least a little nutritional value?

thanks!

Cruella de mom
07-10-2009, 09:20 AM
Angie - I eat baked potatoes when I am craving salt. I add some cheddar cheese and some fat free sour cream and more salt than typical. If my kids ar home, I make myself potato skins and let them eat the inner part of the potato. (I bake them, so they are mostly healthy)

Another salt craving helper is V8 juice. It doesn't cure the crunchy craving but it definately helps the salt. I usually eat cucumber or celery slices with it so that I feel like I am crunching something. Or if you are just snacking, put some salt on cucmber slices or tomato slices.

If it's lunch time, try a can of soup to help with the salt issue. Most of them are loaded with salt. Again, it doesn't cure the munchy part but add a few carrot sticks and it will usually cure the craving.

If you need something to store in a drawer at work try salted peanuts or beef jerky. DH measures out peanuts in snack bags so that he doesn't eat too many at a time and beef jerky comes in small serving packages.

hope this helps.

Good Morning Everyone!
I just read that I got the okay to come back (yeah!)
I will be MIA for two weeks- off to the Cape! Hopefully the weather will turn around a little.
I'll post and update when I return.

Shan- sorry about your injury. I still have mine after a YEAR and I cannot do any long distance. I still signed up for the MCM- if I have to walk part of it so be it. My medal will still say 'finisher' on it. I say - sign up for the race. I find it gives me that extra motivation to get out the door. Extra points if you run for a charity!

Lisa- sorry about the new hours at work. I am in fear every day that I am going to get laid off. I really like were I am and I am truelly blessed to have an amazing bunch of smart and supportive group to work with. Not always crazy about the patients:) DH has me extra worried as well. Not a good time for him to be working for the DOD.

In addition- I have signed up to run the Boston Half Marathon in October. Since I will never BQ it is the next best thing! I am running for the Dana-Faber if anyone has extra $ to spare. Unfortunately it is two weeks before MCM but I'll count it as a training run!

Have fun everyone and I'll return in two weeks!

???? Where is everyone????

Mike how was it today?

As for me, I ran the relay for my BIL at the Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon. I forgot to turn off my garmin but I think I finished in 57:21 or there abouts. It was a tough course and it was raining so I was pleased with my effort.

I did realize that I should have trained for racing a 10k. I was unsure of how hard I could push myself and not bonk before the end. So I am running hard but feeling very strong and feeling like I could maintain that pace for quite a while but I don't KNOW if I can push harder and its a race so I want to push. That should keep my 6 mile runs more interesting (and faster) for a while!

Ok Goofs - REPORT!

Tonight was a proof of concept run. 15.05 miles around the neighborhood. Or, put another way, 30 laps around the neighborhood. Again and again and again, I went past my house. I was never more than a couple minutes from a place where I could quit, but I wanted to prove that I could endure a boredom that you won't find on a treadmill or a normal road run.

I ran my shift for my running club's Relay for Life team last night. I was scheduled to run a 1.5 hour shift but my wife took the last half hour. I ran 7 miles in that hour. It was a very humbling experience to run that track circling all the cancer survivors and candles in memory of those who lost their battle.

I'm not used to running non-stop as I usually run 4 minutes/walk 1. Whenever I felt like stopping, I kept thinking of what these people had gone through and how minute my pain actually was.

I'm glad I'm participating again as it had been a few years since I was on the team my company used to participate in.

I'm unfortunately paying for it this morning as I haven't been this sore in a long time! I passed on a 7.2-mile race I was supposed to do this morning. An interesting thing I noticed is, even though I pushed myself during those 7 miles last night, I ended up running a much slower pace than I usually do when I take my walk breaks. I'll have to remember that when I'm tempted to skip them during normal races.

We will be around this week and then we are heading to Los Angeles for a week to visit family. I'm running a 5K while down there and then the San Francisco Half-Marathon on the way home.

Hi Goofs! Back to work today (can't you tell? ;) ) and also to the gym. Got in some weights and a quick bike warmup. I am starting a new training plan this week, and want my XT days to focus more on upper body weight training and abs. We'll see how it goes--I think I need a new exercise set.

On the spur of the moment (and the prodding of a friend), I did the Muddy Buddy race yesterday. Was rather interesting and fun. I wrote up a report on the race thread if you're interested. How often do you get to crawl through a mud pit when you race?

Cecilia Thanks for "holding down the fort" on this thread--it is quiet, but I will do my best to pick it up!

Mike How was the scotch? and what brand--single malt or blended? Oh, and way to hang tough on your workout.

Angie Hope your loss of nail didn't hurt!

Steve Great job on the relay--and I have heard other people say the same thing about pace with a run/walk. I am afraid if I stop running I won't want to start again!

SAHDad Wow--that is a true challenge. Sounds like a good mental exercise--maybe we should incorporate brain training along with body training for our races?

Hooray for Steve and Maura signing up for the Mickey! The Goofs will be well represented! I'm having loads of self-doubt about the Mickey since I had a particularly slow, painful run last night. But the "good"(?) news is that I woke up with a cold this morning, so I can chalk up my poor performance to the fact that I was coming down with something. Maura - congrats on the Muddy Buddy. I'm supposed to do one next spring.

Steve - YAY for signing up! SW has the fares open for my outbound flight but not the return. Still way high right now, too.

HELLO to everyone!!

I slacked off training for a bit and it's been hard to get back into the full swing. Plus with the Tour on that consumes my eves. So next week going to try something new. I'll get up when Patrick does at 5am (hour ealier than my alarm) and do my weight/core work then to free up run/bike/swim time in the eve. See how that works.

Have a great day!!

Ok, is there a way to back up into June's sheet or should I just lump those into July?

Found out the Cold Stone is a 12 mile rt from the house. I see an ice cream bike ride in my near future. :upsidedow

Didn't get out last night due to unexpected issues. Hoping to get in a short run tonight. Fridays are always down days as I do grocery shopping after dinner and putting together menu.

Our nearest Cold Stone is ~200 miles away. I think you can crawl to your Cold Stone faster than I can drive to mine Liz! We are going out of town tomorrow and will be surrounded by them so hopefully I don't overindulge before my half next weekend. After the race though...coffee with Heath bar and caramel here I come!

Airfare is still well over $500 per person (x3) for the WDW Marathon so I'll hold off until I see the desirable flights starting to get booked up. Even driving 5+ hours to the nearest large airport would still only save about $100 per person. :scared1:

The spreadsheet is updated. I don't think I'll be adding many miles the next week as we will be visiting family.

Have a great week everyone!

Good morning Goofs!!!

Coldstone. I think the last time I had an ice cream from there was when I went to OK the last time. Here we have Giffords. It is a local company and well worth the trip!!

Steve, have a nice time visiting family.

Liz, missing you....

Everyone else, okay so I know I am not around much anymore but where the heck is everyone?????? :magnify:

As for me, my training this week has been consistent...finally...and the scale showed it immediately. Do you think my body is sending numeric codes to me??? :scared: So I found a little motivation anyway. Beach body here I come. Not that we have any beach weather here...can't seem to break 68 degrees and then there is that rain issue again. DD14 has a softball tourney this weekend so rain is guaranteed like 70% chance of it...:sad2: So another fun weekend in store. DS7 also has a baseball tourney this weekend which means we go in different directions. They both have to be on their respective fields at 7:45 a.m. tomorrow morning. DS is in town, DD is 1 hour away. Fun times. So today is watch the last day of soccer camp for DS, groceries, cutting up and preparing food for the weekend cooler detail, and finish up the laundry. The cleaning lady came yesterday so I don't have a ton to do. Which is nice. For a change. :goodvibes

Have a super weekend everyone!!

TGIF, everyone!

Did a warm-up on the bike and some Abs & Arms today. Need to find a XT workout that will incorporate good upper body workout with abs. I was doing so much cardio before that I feel like somewhat of a slacker when I don't do it now. Oh well, I'll find what works for me.

Found out that I'll get a medal for Muddy Buddy--yeah, more race bling! Never to proud to aks them to mail it to me. Seems like most races don't bother unless you ask.

Hope everyone has a good weekend. My first "long" run in a while--I think 5 miles! (Yeah, it's puny, but to quote Bobo the Bear from Muppets in Outer Space--"Baby steps, sir, baby steps"!)

hi Goofs!

Not much training to report this week. Unless packing for 5 people is considered cross training. I know I have run up and down the stairs a few hundred times anyway.

I am signing off as we are just about ready to go. Our Mediterranean Cruise is waiting! My mother in law was shocked to hear that I was planning to run on our cruise. She has no clue.

Train hard this week as its a mid season taper week for me :) My partner and I are using the week to heal up and regain some energy so that we can start some very serious training when i get back. Great, she'll be rested and ready to go and I will be jet lagged and dragging. And she will NOT feel sorry for me either! Story of my life.

Hi goofs!

I've had a very productive week in terms of training. 60 minutes on the eliptical followed by 30 minutes on the bike on Sunday. I did a 40 minute wog on Monday followed by pilates. Tuesday was off since I went to see Grease. Wednesday was 30 minutes on the eliptical follow by some weight training. Yesterday was supposed to be a 45 minute wog, but my ipod with the nike+ was dead so I did 15 minutes on the the eliptical followed by 40 minutes on the bike.

Some form of cross training today and tomorrow is a 5 mile wog!

I signed up for Team in Training this week too! I'll be joining them for the WDW marathon (transferring my registration to them). I'm definitely more scared about the fundraising than I am about the training. I need to have another week like this one in training to keep me on track though!

Cecelia - have fun on the cruise!

Congrats on taking the plunge with Team in Training, Megan! I just registered to be a Mentor for the WDW Marathon and am waiting to hear back as to whether I've been accepted. PM me if you'd like to chat about the fundraising. I know it can be scary, but you can do it. Also, feel free to read my TNT web page (link in my siggie below). Maybe some of the things I tried will spark some ideas for you. I hope to meet up with you at the pasta and/or post-race TNT party!

Now for the important stuff: how was Grease???

Cecilia, enjoy the cruise! I'm Lime Green with envy!

Liz, you'll need a bumper sticker that says "Will bike for ice cream." Love me some Cold Stone!

AFM, still fighting a cold so I blew off running yesterday. I met up with the local running store for a group run (and free beer afterward!) on Wednesday night, but ended up walking -- slowly -- with one of my old TNT buddies who hadn't been training in a while, so not my greatest effort to date. Long run (9 miles) on tap for tomorrow and still trying to decide if I should squeeze in a quick 2 miles tonight.

Final thought: I'm really enjoying the New Balance "love/hate" ad campaign. This month's Runner's World ad had my favorite punch line so far: "Total Fit will make you realize RUNNING is your one true love. Even if QUITTING is really good in bed." :lmao:

Hey Goofs! Hope everyone is doing well. :grouphug:

I haven't been out running yet since my steroid shot in the shin. It still feels sore so I have started riding my new bike instead. I'm guessing on my miles and time for the spreadsheet. If I wear my Garmin riding my bike I guess it would still work? Next time I go out I'll give that a try so I can put down more accurate info. I didn't do any like hardcore bike riding cause I got myself one of those cool retro cruiser bikes. I even got a basket for the front. It is so cute! I can now ride with my girls. Still anything is better than nothing, right?

I'm gonna have a very hard time getting back out there. Several obstacles have discouraged me, but I'm still feeling very upset about my pace. It seems like everyone around me running is all about the time. DH's running friends (especially at work) are so all consumed about their pace and what your pace is it has taken the joy out of it for me really. Peachtree was a prime example. I'm tired of feeling like the ole' lady. Really, I'm not fast, but then again I don't think I'm that slow that I should be made to feel this way. Like I'm not a runner or something because of my pace... Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Thank goodness for WISH, definitely a more encouraging atmosphere!

I'm also dealing with a recent event that has had a HUGE impact on me personally. I'll be dealing with this for a couple months. It has kinda taken over my life in a very negative way. So any pixie dust that can be thrown my way would be greatly appreciated. I can use all the pixie dust Pixie Hollow has to offer! ;) I'm just really ready to have a boring life again, ya know?

Enjoy your runs Super Goofs and your weekend! :goodvibes

pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust:

As long as you are out there training, you are a runner!

(I'm pretty sure I have told this next story before - I've helped spread it around over the years)

Supposedly, after one of the larger marathons, an intrepid reporter had the idea of interviewing both the winner and the last person to cross the finish line at the same time. The interview starts out by saying that the winner managed to cross the finish line in two hours and seven minutes, and the last place finisher took over seven hours to accomplish the same feat.

The reporter than asks the pair for a reaction. The DLFer looks at the winner and says "You were able to finish in two hours?"

And the winner looks at the DLFer and says "You were able to keep running for seven hours?"

The point, of course, is that the course doesn't magically get shorter if you aren't as fast. Often times, its harder to be out there longer - the temperature climbs, stations run low on food and water, the cheering crowds disappear. I have a heck of a lot of respect for the back of the packers.

Good mornin' Goofs!
Busy, busy, busy around here, but I've managed to get my workouts in.

Last Sun. was the first ever (organizers think) 1/10 Ironman. IM/10. It was fun & the t-shirt is cool, which is really why I signed up! .24 mile swim, 11.2 mile bike, 2.62 mile run. I even have a 14.06 sticker for my car now. For some reason my swim was bout 1:30 slower than training & I had to wog most of the run. I have bad hips and when something goes "pow" 1/2 mile in, I have to wog if I'm going to finish (this happens a lot!).

Ran 3 miles yeserday. I'm up for 35 minute swim and 70 minute bike today.
Have a great day!

Thank you Maura and Rich. :goodvibes
Rich, that was a great story. I loved it!

My Peachtree time was 1:09:59 - 4 minutes slower than my 10K PR I ran last October. I have definitely slowed down. I know I'm not fast, but I don't think I should be given the vibe I'm getting. DH's coworkers are so darn competitive. I'm definitely treated like I'm not really a runner because of my pace. He also runs with a running group that are actually very nice, but they do ultras. They are kinda in another world to me.

They posted everyone's Peachtree times in the company newsletter and since DH ran with me his time showed mine. Everyone kept asking him why he ran so slow. I guess the time was next to last. I think he was embarrassed cause he is actually a fast runner, but the whole thing kinda hurt my feelings. I dunno. I am older than most of them. I guess I shouldn't worry about it, but whenever we run a race people are calling or texting to compare their times.

Suzanne, congrats on signing up for the two races! I'm still playing with the idea of running the TOT. We'll probably decide last minute. We're in Atlanta so we can make it a weekend trip. I have heard a rumor that this might be the last year those two races are held, something about being replaced with a single larger event next year. RFTT was actually my first race I ever ran, so I'm kinda sad to see that go. I was really proud of that medal!

After tonight's run, I have declared "hill" to be a 4-letter word. I came home and told DH we needed to move to my friend's town in PA. Her neighborhood is pancake flat, but ours is located in hilly AL and does not make for a nice after-dinner run. Oh well. I got 'er done and updated the spreadsheet so all is not lost.

hey all, just wanted to tell you about my race this weekend...

5 miler, I've done it twice before, so I knew going in it was primarily elite runners. It was. So, since I knew I would be back of pack, and most likely DLF, I just did my best and had fun with it. The pace car caught me around mile 2, so for the rest of the race, I told spectators that it was my support crew! At the end, they were doing the kids fun run, well, all the kids got yellow t-shirts, and I happened to be wearing my WISH shirt, so when the crowds were hollering "go yellow shirt!" I told myself they were all yelling for me! The last two course flaggers both commented that I was almost done, and still smiling, of course I was still smiling, I was going to finish, duh!

so, I had fun, got another race under my belt, finished the six race series I had signed up for, got a race tshirt and a series tech shirt, and even managed to be 4 minutes faster than last year. all good, now if I could just find a job...

hope everything is going well for everyone else!

keep on running! (and walking, and swimming, and biking, and, and, well, you know!)

Hey everyone!!

Shan - :wizard::hug: I totally know what you mean. There is a running club here at work that has team competitions. Scores come from # of events (there is a min), distance then speed individual and gender ratings. Well since I did 2 halfs in 4 weeks in the spring they approached me more than once to join. However the are all about the speed. Yeah, my distances would get them big points but not fast enough for their liking. Here them occasionally stopping by a girl who sits a couple desks from me - she's on the team - and them telling her she HAS to come for speed training 2x/wk because she's too slow. Yeah, I dont' need that.

BTW, Garmin works on bike, just switch mode to bike. They also make a mount for the bike that comes with a velcro wriststrap. Love mine.

Angie - WTG!!!! :cheer2:

Maura - buy the Garmin.

Hope everyone else is doing great!!

AFM: got in 40 mile bike on Sat including two 20mph sustained sprints. Patrick has taken to calling me Cavendish because I just gear up alongside him and keep going. :rotfl:

Have a 10 mile trail run this weekend where I figure I'll be DLF. However it's not an easy course (steep climbs on limestone) so all I can do is my best. Will get in some extra run time this week. Have RnR Chicago next weekend - looking forward to it.

Morning Goofs!

Glad to see everyone is on chatting it up and supporting each other. You all rock!!

Shan, hang in. I am in a similar situation. Starting over, thinking I should be faster, struggling to "keep up" but in the end, what matters is that we are out there and not sitting on the couch thinking about it. I feel pressured for time running in the morning feeling that I need to be done by X time and continually checking my Garmin knowing it is not fast enough and I will have to cut it short. I love my Garmin and I always felt I could not live without it. But I am. And I am happier for it. Try running without it on a route that you know the distance. Use your watch, iPod clock, phone or whatever to keep track of your start and finish time. It will make you happier I promise. Pace is relevant.

Angie, nice job on the 5 miler. I am sure you were smiling at the end. You finished!!

Everyone else, :grouphug:

As for me, you can see from my post that I am struggling with a lot of things right now. Getting out, working through my pace challenges, soreness from not running, and then there is our endless rain. I need to run to relieve stress but it has been causing me more stress and I need to let that go. This is for me, not time, not pace, not anything else. Easier to say than to feel. My competitive side rules my world. This too shall pass I am sure.

Today is a short day for me, working until 9, then the real work begins, laundry, cleaning, groceries, food prep, etcetera. Hopefully it will be nice enough for a nonpressured run this afternoon, or a bike, whatever feels right!!

Have a great week Goofs and keep on moving for your personal best whatever that may be....:yay:

Lisa You hang in there! I hear you about the "competitive" part. I am the same way. I feel like I need to a) improve on every race, every time and b) do well in my age group. Even with training, I feel somewhat let down if I struggle with a workout.

That's why I've made a bargain with myself--run the shorter runs during the week on the treadmill, where I can set the paces, but for the long run on the weekend-NO watch--just run the miles, feel comfortable doing them and let it be. This worked well for me when I trained for the Donald.

(Of course, I am throwing that out the window-at least temporarily--for my current training!)

Liz Glad you are okay after your incident the other day.

Early work day for me today (I'm in between meetings) so plan to go to gym after work and.....swim! I've decided that now that I am not training, swimming may end up being a very useful cross training. I will just swim and not count laps or pace or anything.

Pixie dust for a potential injury, please. My knee felt a little iffy after Monday night's run, but during and after last night's run, it just plain hurt. I had some swelling on and around the kneecap (mostly inside -- medial?) and whenever I straightened my leg, the knee would lock up. I'm leaving today to take the kids to the beach. Kinda a last minute trip before school starts back up. I'm hoping I can forget about some of my worries and let some of this tension go. I have physically made myself sick with some personal issues I'm having to deal with right now. I'm kinda in a nightmare situation right now. Is it bad of me to be looking forward to 2010? Our dog of 15 years is also about to pass away. DH is staying home and is taking her to the vet on Tuesday. I'm afraid they are going to stay it is time. Very sad, we got her when we got married. I have told the kids she might not make it thru the week and they need to be loving on her this morning. Anyway, I'll be back in a week, hopefully refreshed and ready to go. I hope everyone's injuries get better! I think taking off has done my shin good. I could probably slowly get back out there, but I think I'll stick to my bike and do some walking while at the beach. Quick question for the Goofs...do any of you use the Galloway method, and if so, what R/W interval do you use and why? Also, do you only use R/W for long runs or for all your runs?

With my already bad knees and ankles, I'm trying to come up with a plan that will make me less prone to injury...the Galloway plan sounds like a good compromise, but the recommended R/W intervals seem so short...not necessarily a bad thing, but without having tried it, I'm having difficulty imagining how you can get into any sort of groove that way.

Joanne, sorry you had to hear it that way, we were all told in a group, but had been hearing the rumors so we knew it was coming...good luck in finding something fast, I'm still looking...

Hi all! Did my 6 miles today so check that box.

Shannon I don't do Galloway, but I know others do--try the monthly thread.

Sounds like another productively Goofy Sunday. Hope everyone is getting some rest, too.

Hello Goofs!!

WTG for everyone getting out regardless of distance or time.
PD for anyone injured.

Joanne - nice way to find out about your job. :sad2:
Shan -
Mike - nice time for there. It is hilly!

Didn't do much Sat (well at least not exercise wise - lots of housework). Yesterday however I rode 3.5 miles to gym, 45 min weight/core, 2 miles on stationary bike during carido bursts (2 min cardio inbetween each core exercise), 10 min stretching, 8 laps in the pool, 10 min hot tub then 3.5 mile ride home. First time I've done that (ride to/from gym) but enjoyed it. Think it'll become part of weekend routine.

Today will either be down time or pool time. Will see how I'm doing when leave work.

Have a great day!!

Hello Goofs!

Good job on all the running, biking and swimming everyone! I've been slacking - still keeping the daily running going, but I've slacked on a couple of my long runs. It has me a little worried, since my next race in in less than 2 weeks, but maybe I've already checked into taper mode.

Shannon - I have done the Galloway method (though normally I don't walk when I am out for a run), but have problems running 5-9 minutes and then a minute or two walking. Tomorrow, I'm going to try 25 minutes running, 5 minutes walking, and see how that goes. I know that I am going to be walking in my next race, so I probably ought to try mixing it in a little bit before race day.

Is there a way to set up my Garmin using the Galloway method? I do my own walk/jog combo but I'd love to have my Garmin beep at me and tell me to get moving!!

Yep. I'd have to either hunt down my manual or play around with it to remember how to do it, but I have done it before, where I set it to beep atfer nine minutes and again one minute later.

Suzanne, do you have a 305? I'm doing this from memory so take it with a grain of salt, but I think you go to Training, then Interval, and from there you choose Time/Rest Time. Within that menu, you can set whatever intervals you like, just don't make the mistake I almost did: the first two digits are for hours! I was going for 3:1 and almost ended up with 30 hours running/1 minute walking.

Hi Goofs!

I am back! whew. The past week was A TON more work than imagined and I wasn't thinking it was going to be easy.

Glad to be home even if we brought back a rip roaring case of the swine flu with us. My dd13 hasn't risen from bed for more than 10 minutes at time since Sunday. I am still hoping that noone else gets it.

The trip was good and bad. A med cruise is not anything like a caribbean cruise. Its all walking & touring. Add in 3 almost 80 year old parents and 5 teen or preteen kids and you can imagine that I didn't relax much. I had two periods where I went more than 24 hours without sleep. Lets just say that I didn't feel much like running.....

Ran today though. It was almost like celebrating it felt so good. I think it was the past three days of forced quaranteen and rest.

Cecilia, have you run the Labor Day 10K Classic? I think we're gonna sign up for it, but it sure seems like a super tough course! I'm wondering if this wouldn't be wise of me... :lmao: Those aren't hills, they are MOUNTAINS!

Shan - I haven't run it, I hear scary things about it. All uphill doesn't sound like a fun race at all. If you decide you want to run it, I will be glad to meet you there and run at your pace. We can take it easy and have fun while your dh kills himself for time. However, with the shin issue, I think you would be better off finding a fun and easy 5k to start off with. I am wondering if your pace issues and your other life issues might be related. You could be dealing with mild depression which can definately affect your running.

As for the pace thing in general. I too have many friends that obsess about their speed. For a long time, I felt like I was less of a runner because I wasn't running 7 or 8 minute miles. I was embarrased to talk about my times to them.
Then I ran Goofy with Team in Training and I stayed with a couple of girls who were injured and struggling to finish their first marathons. I ended up with a pretty lousy finish time, but I had one of the greatest days of my life. I felt like such a winner that day and all the TNT folks treated me like a rockstar.
So I get home and my pace happy friends ask why I had such a "lousy time." They try to console me about my finish time and I realize that they will never get it. Their obsession with time blinds them to the magic of running and the mystery of race day. Yes, I still love it when I have a fast time, but I refuse to let a fast time dictate whether or not I have a good time.
Hang in there. It WILL get better.

Just a quick thought on pace (which occured to me while running yesterday and today) - I obsess over my pace, and my pace only. I don't know enough about other runners to know whether or not they are putting forth their best effort, or if they are treating a race as a training run, or if they are helping pace a friend, or if they are injured, etc. I'll push people to give their all at the finish line, but I try to operate under the presumption that everyone toeing the line on race day, or lacing up for a training run, is doing whatever is appropriate for them at that time.

Some of my "worst" races have been among my fastest times, and some of my "best" races my slowest.

Anyway, it's a pity that some people get so caught in the "I can run X minute miles, why can't you?" I can understand asking a friend "Your time for this race seemed really off. Are you okay?" but I think helping other runners get across the line is a great accomplishment!

(Sorry this was disjointed. I just finished running a couple minutes ago, and wanted to get it down before I forgot about it again.)

Welcome back, Cecilia! Sounds like you were the cruise director--not too relaxing. Glad the running felt good.

All uphill doesn't sound like a fun race at all. Then you probably would never want to run this.....

As for me....went to the pool this afternoon (after my physical and only slightly playing hookie from work). I have to say, swimming ain't half bad when you're not doing it to train for something. I swam a nice slow, easy mile--which is probably more than I swam at any given time while I was tri training. Just goes to show you how much of a mental game this all is.

As for the pace discussion, I know I sometimes kvetch about my own pace--but NEVER anyone elses. I mean, everyone is different...why would I begin to make judgments about anyone else? That said, I am quickly thinking I will drop any notions of pace for my first (and possibly only)marathon. On the other hand, I am sorely tempted toorder a Garmin!
