My grandparents had a Tom and Jerry set similar to the one pictured in Walt's apartment when I was a child.

I think it was a popular drink in the 1950's-1960's and that it definitely WAS alcoholic. I remember it being kind of like spiked eggnog.

I took a quick look online and most of the things I found confirmed that - it being some sort of frothy, spiked, eggnog concoction.

You can find Tom and Jerry sets in antique stores and malls here in the midwest. I've seen them frequently. Unless it was a tradition in your family, most people probably DON'T know what they are for and what it means. (Maybe it was a midwest thing?)

Hmm, it must be a midwest only drink I didn't think it was that strange of a drink. My family is from the Southwest Wisconsin and Southeast Minnesota area. I thought it was pretty popular back maybe 20-40 years ago it is my mother's favorite drink.

By the way it is very good, but pretty fattening. My family normally have it during the Holiday season and I remember it is most popular during new years. I hope I got the ingredients right: rum, brandy, sugar, eggs, we use whole milk, and then heat the whole mess on the stove.

I thought it was possibly a gift from Warner Bros (& wondered why they would have cartoon characters from another company). I'm clueless. I never heard of that drink before.

Here's a pic of the service we saw in Walt's apartment

I wonder which came first... the drink or the cartoon? I mean, did the drink come first and the cartoon characters were named Tom & Jerry as kind of an inside joke for parents? Or the other way around?
