Cindy D. they looked like they liked it but.....it was hard forcing the kids to take pictures *everyday* with the characters. But I'd have to do it again if and when we sail....because we can relive the trip over and over again thru the pictures.

You know what's funny? When Disney (or many companies for that matter) advertises they always have these perfect looking people and their perfect looking children and it actually makes you not want to go to the place, but then you see a picture like that and there are normal people and normal kids and it just makes you want to jump right in the picture! Why don't they realize that? Anyone else feel this way?

tiggerwannabe
04-03-2006, 07:46 AM
I joined a thread of who was cruising with us last year...

and learned by talking to them that we were all "normal" people.

I've always been comfortable at Disney and the cruise lines ~ime~ is no different.

It's fun though to try to spot members of the family in other people's photos. A while ago, my wife spotted us in someone else's photo that they posted on the boards here.

Thank you...That did turn out nice, didn't it?

I only stopped in for a barrett...

My friends had their hair done...the one on the right pops in here from time to time, I could ask her to answer that question. That barrett btw, after tip to the hairdresser for putting it in for me it, made mine a $50 visit.

DVCJen, If I recall correctly the updo was only $35.00 + tip, I had no idea that the clips I bought would be so expensive....$35 for 1 and $40 for the other for DD. Okay now that I've complained I have to tell you that I LOVE that clip. It was an easy 45 bucks for the fabulous memory I have of having my hair done up like a princess. The hair style was so nice that I just took out all the pins and then had this really bouncy do the 2nd day.

hmmm.... now to go find a picture of the day to add to keep the magic alive....

I have seen others mention these before, and they are called "Lifestyle Portraits." Unfortunately, I don't know whether you have to actually schedule the time with the photographer or not. But, since may of the ones I have seen the family seems to be dressed alike, I would guess that you can schedule a specific time.

No, actually it's taken at Serenity Bay at Castaway Cay. It was one of those times where, when I climbed into the hammock and gazed out at the water, there was just something about the geometric pattern of the ropes that drew my eyes to the end of the hammock and to the horizon...and I thought "That would be a great picture!"

And I was right...even if I do say so myself. One of the best pictures I've ever taken.

On our last cruise the ships photographers had the white background for the lifestyle photographs set up in the Atrium a couple of nights when they were doing pictures. They did them on the more casual nights on the longer cruise - I don't know about the 3 and 4 night cruises.

My girlfriend had literally tons of pictures taken on our 7 day cruise...

TALK to the photographers! They'll tell you where, when, who and how for all the setups they do. We visited them the first night and she got the details and mapped out for her. Here are only a few samples of what they did for her and her family...awesome aren't they?

Here is the free birthday cake we received at dessert time on the Wonder in 2004. It's more like a jello mold with a thin layer of yellow cake. It didn't taste too good, but the white chocolate ship was pretty cool and hey it's "free!"

HI Tiggerwannabe and Grimgrinnin!!!

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply! We headed down to Florida from Illinois...between packing and travelling, I am out of the loop!!! I wish I could post a couple of shots I took of my two DS's standing in the portholes...and their reflections. Alas...totally clueless.

Anyway, the Ducky talks and auction was truly special!!! They have been doing more of the live auctions though. We became friends with Jason and Laura...email Laura regularly! Anyway it is a great program. The special story for us on the pic is that in college I auditioned for Snow White at WDW...I was too tan and that was WAY before the variety of princesses in the parks. So SW has always been very special to me. Well, my husband and I had our first date on a little riverboat cruise and then WON our honeymoon...on Holland America. We were young and BROKE...and fell in love with cruising!! Our first DCL cruise was 9-1-01 and it was truly remarkable. Due to a home we were building in Illinois, our 3 kids and I lived in our condo in central Florida while my husband returned to Peoria Sept. 9, 2001 due to work and the build. Of course the drama of 9-11 really hit us all hard. It made that week and Disney even more priceless. So when he went ahead and bid...and won...I couldn't believe it. To us, it has so many touchstones in our life. Sorry if it bored you...but thanks for reading. Next time we will have to attend an auction together!

Take care, and Pixie Dust wishes!!!! :tink:

It's so awesome that you won that painting!

To have such beautiful memories attached to such a beautiful painting deserves a win like that.

Grim and I were front and center and I really took notice of that painting in particular. I posted it again for anybody who would like to see which one Tiffany is talking about.

I always look at the glass as half full but know it could spill over at any time...

I've studied and practiced photography since I was in high school, it's my passion not my trade...

I take pics for my friends. I've done portraits and weddings and band shots as favors.

I love to practice, esp while on vacation...the camera I use now is fairly new and I'm still getting the hang of it. I have a Minolta slr that I love but realize that digital is the way to go. By this Christmas I intend to get a better camera and pass the one I have now to my daughter. She's graduating high school this year and wants to study photography in college.

Hi Tigg!

How wonderful to be able to enjoy the photography!!! I have a Digital Nikon...my old SLR lenses worked for the digital. I want to be able to take more action shots...all three kids are golfers, basketball players, track, diving, volleyball...etc., etc.! Our DD has to give up a few sports next year thanks to high school! So far all three are fairly blessed in their abilities and I like being able to take shots of them. The lighting in the gyms has not been condusive to taking good shots as they run the court. Any ideas???

My goal is to take a class or two...in between athletic events! HAHA!!! Actually, my DH volunteer coached the 8th grade girls for the last two and has been asked to do the 6th grade boys...as well as possibly take on the freshmen high school girls. He is a dentist by trade...but loves working with the kids. I got to coach our cheerleaders. Life is one event after the next.

Sorry to ramble! Any pointers would be greatly helpful!
Thanks.
By the way, I'm Tif!

Sports can be tricky...

~I do more stills than action shots~

How hi a speed does your camera cover? The higher the speed the better stop action you'll get. Canadian Cruiser has given me a few pointers and is very good with a digital.

Any ideas people?

My advice is the closer the better...once you've got the speed to actually capture the action focus on zooming in on the action. Most people have a tendancy to take pics from too far away.

~It's very nice to meet you Tif :) ~

Hey Tif:

One other thing to think about when doing action shots with a digital SLR is to be sure that your memory card is a high speed card. It has nothing to do with the actual shot itself, but it will allow you to take consecutive shots quicker. The faster a photograph can be written to the card, the faster you get on to the next shot.

Hope that helps! Enjoy!

:groom: Thanks! Oh, I would probably mess things up a whole lot more with a professional SLR digicam! My Canon S40 has lots of manual settings, most of which I've forgotten how to use. I read the manual once when I got it back in 2002, but I honestly can't remember a lot of the features. It's been a fun camera that's handy to use, and I've been pretty happy with it over the years.

I guess you could call it the Filipino version of a fried wonton ? It's a thin-eggroll type of pastry (?) with meat in it....Much better than any taquito or wonton I've ever tasted. I lived out in CA for a few years and a few of my friends were Filipino and their moms used to make this for parties.....It was over twenty years since I've had Lumpia.....
You must try it if you go to Nassau!

I was surprised by every one, had to quickly grab my camera-which I did carry to the dining room with me, jic- and grab some shots while the show was going on. Not too many of those pictures came out cause I simply wasn't prepared.

The flag parade and the character breakfast and mickey the sorcerer visiting at every meal...next cruise I'll at least be ready & have a better idea of where to position myself before the shows begin.

Yeah, it's handy to have a small tripod to take those low light shots. I always bring my camera and camcorder around since it's hard to explain to the folks at home about the great "Chip n' Dale" show you saw during dinner. They always seem to get the wrong idea for some reason. :guilty: ;)

I think I stood in the exact same spot you did for that photo, but I had my tripod with me.

I've seen people use monopods before, but I think they're limited in what they can do. Sometimes I'll use my tripod in a monopod kind of way without extending the legs out. You may as well just get a tripod since you can do so much more with one I think. The monopod certainly will stabilize the camera, but for longer exposures, I don't think it can take the place of a tripod.

Considering the light weight and small size of most tripods, I don't think you'd be gaining much by going the monopod route. It's more of a pain to set up a tripod, but for the extra minute of work, you can get some shots that otherwise would be difficult to achieve.

I have a Canon Rebel XT digital slr that I love. I let a friend borrow it to take pics of her daughter at a cheerleading competition (her pics came out horrible...all blurry!), and ever since I can't take good action shots. I used it all last season during baseball, basketball & football for my kids. I need to figure out what is going on before we cruise in 3 weeks. Any suggestion? how do I change the speed?

Also, I never knew memory have speeds? How do I know what speed my memory card is? What speed do I want?

Also, I never knew memory have speeds? How do I know what speed my memory card is? What speed do I want?

A couple of things to look at on the action shots. The Rebel XT should have an option on it for action shots. This should show up on your display as an icon/figure in a running pose. Definitely use this mode for the action shots. Also, as crazy as this sounds, you may just want to look at the camera and be sure that nothing has changed on the settings. If you normally shoot in program mode, be sure it is still in program. I have a habit on my digital point & shoot of hitting one of the knobs and turning it to a mode that turns on the flash all the time.

As far as the memory cards, The standard cards are 4x write speed. The cards can go all the way up to 80x. You can always look for ones that say "High Speed" or "Professional" on them without having to worry about the exact write speed. But, you must understand that you will not find these cards priced for $29.99. They are going to be anywhere from 25-100% higher for the same card size, depending on the actual speed. That is the trade-off for being able to take more pictures in the same amount of time.

Hope this helps!

Who was having fun? A moment after the last photo was taken with my spouse stretching my ears they took me to the infirmary to put ice on my ears! Now I don't need to wear a mickey mouse ear cap to pass for a Mickey fan! LOL! :lmao: Ok... maybe that's NOT the case... and we might just have a little fun as adults on the cruise. Ya kno... we can;t let the little ones have ALL the fun? :thumbsup2

BTW... on another note, I thought I'd add that I've enjoied scrolling backwards through this thread looking at everyone's photo contributions! It makes me feel like I've just been on the Magic again in a little way!

Cheers to all who have contributed something pleasant to this thread as well as any of the DIS forums! :yay:

I have a Canon Rebel XT digital slr that I love. I let a friend borrow it to take pics of her daughter at a cheerleading competition (her pics came out horrible...all blurry!), and ever since I can't take good action shots. I used it all last season during baseball, basketball & football for my kids. I need to figure out what is going on before we cruise in 3 weeks. Any suggestion? how do I change the speed?

Also, I never knew memory have speeds? How do I know what speed my memory card is? What speed do I want?

I have the Digital Rebel XT aswell and love it! About your photos...have you tried resetting the camera to its factory settings? Set the dial to P, then go to the menu and to the 2nd "tool" section. Select "clear settings", and then try "clear all custom functions". That should erase any settings that your friend might have changed. Also, try the sensor cleaning, same menu. If you are not comfortable with doing this (sensor cleaning), ask a good camera store, I'm sure they'll do it for you (for a fee, of course, but it's worth it! You should clean the sensor on a DSLR every now and then!

Hope that helps!

;) There are probably easier ways to get that white frame on, but what I do is run a program called Lumapix Fotofusion which is actually used for making photo collages. It places the white frame and drop shadow on for you. I output it to a file which then I preview in IRFanview, crop the image out of the background, and then resize it for posting.

I think you can make the drop shadows and borders in Photoshop as well, but I haven't figured it out yet. I posted a couple of links to some other programs that do borders a few pages back as well.

Here's one of my pix from the same moment your photo above was taken. It's one of our favorite but mildly somber moments on the sailing as well. As you can see ... my photo is nothing to wite home about as well .. but then again I think it's sort of hard to get a good vantage point for a decent photo unless one climbs the elevator lattice facing the atrium to gain an angle above the crowd.

I am an avid photographer too...I see a picture in almost everything! I use a Canon Rebel XT and absolutely love it, however, I am looking into a smaller camera. I will still use the Rebel, but I would like something to carry around in my purse for everyday shooting or for when we go on vacation. It does get tiresome lugging the Rebel around and I am worried it will get stolen or damaged on the beach. Canon just came out with a new powershot. I think it's the SD630. It's a tiny little camera, still 6megapixels though, and I think I am going to get it for myself :thumbsup2

captaincrash
04-29-2006, 01:11 AM
The SD630 is brand new and here's a link to a DP review page (not a review).... http://www.dpreview.com/news/0602/06022109canonsd600.asp#specs or http://www.dpreview.com/news/0602/06022109canonsd600.asp#specs

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0602/canon/canon_ixus65_frontback-001.jpg

And it looks formidible... 6MP, 2.5" LCD screen, ISO 80~800, 30FPS VGA, a 9 point AiAF and a 4x optical zoom. The price seems cheap too at $400-350. With a spec sheet and price like that the unsuspecting might not ever consider a DSLR!?? I have a SD400 which is similar with 5mp, ISO 50-400 and a 2" LCD (currently $199-299). You can' beat these pocket digicams for convenience - but in practice I carry my 10D and Lowpro AW75 everywhere 97% of the time. I usually carry 3 lenses plus a flash half the time. And in practice the most use the SD400 gets is as a substitute for a camcorder! Yeah - we actually view MPEG video more than our miniDV video footage!

And at $50-100 of difference I would spring for the SD630 if I were in the market for a pocket camera. However, I might encourage you to save your cash for a HD video camera. The SD630 and the SD400 are not very compelling substitutes for your Rebel or any DSLR. And the SD cameras are not going to have any advantage (except size and convenience) over the DSLR. Speed, power (usable ISO 1600), image purity, RAW and reaction time are always going to be considerably better with the DSLR... and after carrying the SD400 around I sort of reverted into only using the DSLR. I used to have a rebel until - as you feared... I got it wet walking through the surf on a cruise while carrying two toddlers in my arms. I had to replace the shutter to get it working again - then I sold it to be free of legacy issues (I disclosed the shutter replacement and failure issues in the listing ~ it still got good money - mayb e because of my feedback or the extensive description and multitude of photos I posted). Then I decided that I had spent a huge sum on digicam equipment and went to a used 10D on ebay for a scant $100 more than what I sold the rebel for. Yeah... the 10D is just like a D-rebel in a black magnesium body - but I did it because the 10D debuted for $2200 and I could get it for $600! So that was MY WAY of sidestepping the depreciating residual values. Oddly enough I got 75% of the cost of my D-rebel (since I kept the kit lense) and got the 10D for 72% off!

My 10D is such a dream to handle in rendering images. I have a tough time stepping down to a pocket camera. Plus - the pocket SD gets beat to #@*! So I recommend that if you get one to immediately get an LCD screen protector for it. And if you can resist - save your dollars for a HD video camera for when they drop under $1000. They seem to get about $1500 and shoot 70 minutes on a miniDV tape. THAT is something to justify your HDTV - since the HDTV programming is so marginal IMHO.

Aside from that - - may I enquire which lenses you have for the rebel? It might not be a bad idea to add a couple of sharp lenses to your kit instead of an SD630 - as the KIT lense is sort of OK - and there are a few mucky lenses out there - it could be you don't have the sharpest lenses on your DSLR - and a sharp lense can make your images POP - plus the "rig" will handle a little better with a focal range you enjoy.

Sorry to be deflecting your thinking a little - it's just my 20-20 rear view mirror thinking. You kno... if I could do it again - then I'd be one step closer to the HD camcorder ---- and one step closer to a HD DVD player which was just released last month! I saw one the other day and Best Buy and it's only $499... and the movies are about $25-30 each. Gotta have THAT! :thumbsup2

Oh yeah... half my Disney cruise images were shot with the still alive D-rebel ... and the 2nd half were shot with the back up SD400 after the D-rebel died from surf exposure. There's another reason to have a backup. If you still need a backup - why not a $50 G-1? http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canong1/ http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canong1/Images/frontview-001.jpg I bought my 1st G1 for aboiut $750 5 years ago ... and I paid $400 for a 1G micordrive. These things depreciate so quickly - it makes me think twice about buying high tech when it's brand new... excpet for HD DVD players and HD camcorders. Those things I covet (in a nice way, of course!). Oh yeah... upsode of a D-rebel and a G1 are that they share the same batteries and memory - and the rebel is at the bottom rung of resale cost so they can be had for next to nothing. It does half VGA at 30FPS and shoots 3MP with the same external flash as the D-rebel! It is about 4x as bulky but it is smaller than a d-rebel and probably able to be 1/5th the size of the DSLR kit. Or at least it is 1/5th my DSLR KIT.

Oh yeah... 2% of the time I carry the SD400 and 1% of the time I carry the G1. And I am almost as happy to use the G1 because it takes slightly nicer images than the SD... it's the larger sensor - and the fact the specs are not ov erly ambitious compared to the the SD. Those super slim SD digicams come with tiny 1/2.5" sensors and more pixels while the G1 has the larger 1/1.8" sensor with fewer pixels. It makes for larger sensor sites and cleaner images.... DIGIC 2 can only correct so much. My G1 images ocassionally POP while the SD400 images NEVER pop. But the SD fits in my pocket but the G1 requires a compact camera bag oer the shoulder. But the G1 can use many of the same accessories as the 10D (except lenses). Nuf said, eh?

Sorry for the tangental posting - I had to toss in my 2 bits in reply on the SD630.

Cheers!

I used a Canon S40 4 megapixel camera that I bought in 2002 for all those pictures. It's been a good, compact camera for travel.

I just bought the SD550 and am LOVING it! Good luck, I am sure you'll take outstanding pictures, no matter which camera you choose. Your pictures are awesome!

Well - not really intending to upstage Tiggerking....

but why wait until November 25th? We have a bit of unreserved cabin space on our October 28th 2006 Halloween sailing to the Eastern Carribean! Why not book on our sailing... you'd have a freash set of images to renew your postings to this wonderful thread. I kno... it's a cheesey excuse - but why not, eh?

OK... now I've exposed myself to someone sailing sooner to extend another invitation... but can anyone else offer the wild additional antics of a DIS Halloween party on their sailing? Or how about a semi-private DIS trick or treat run from DIS cabin to cabin around the ship.... or DIS "my signature" 2nd annual, totally unauthorized "DIS Mickey Ice Cream Bar Speed Eating Contest" ... complete with gold seal embossed award certificates signed by the Captain of the Magic and possibly a Disney Character or two? Oh yeah!!!... and our DIS meet is also working up custom shirts (I already ordered 2 custom sweat shirts and a couple of semi-custom T-shirts for the kids). And we have a few other DIS things cooking... with varying degrees of potential like the 1st unauthorizeed DIS Toga party, or the 1st unauthorized and unlikely Combination DIS Halloween Costume Contest and Conga Line Dance through the the ship.. stem to stern?!

OK... maybe we will have a DIS costume party but we have not not fully finalized that with a volunteer coordinator - nor has the proposal for a conga line of costumed DIS folks been approved. But if it has not been DISapproved then it might still happen!

So..... Canadiancruiser2, why not come out an' sail with us for Halloween???

this is my Gson on pirate night. He looked so cute, he received lots of WOW"s.

We were all dressed up & they came to the dinning rooms to take pictures. There was to be a good one of me & hubby pretending he was chocking me :rotfl2: . Well it got lost, the first 30 pictures taken some how got deleted. Five of them were ours. :sad2:. Even the photo taker was up set, he wanted to see hubby chocking me.

This was the temp plate that was used in the dinning rooms. Cause my pictures were deleted they said I could get any picture I had to be put into this temp plate. They did offer to retake the pictures, clothes were already packed. Feel free to use temp plate if you like, just crop out my Gson. Pm me & I'll send you a larger version of temp plate

Hey that's a neat template and great photo of your GS!

dreamcometrue - the Canon Rebel is very nice I hear, but I agree that it's a bit big to lug around. I think the reason that I have so many photos to choose from is that I am able to wear my camera in a bag on my belt. It's easy to pop out, take a snap, and go back in. My SIL has the SD550 or 500 (?), and those are nice compact cameras, but I think they lack a bit in manual settings so you might be sacrificing a bit for the smaller size.

The Canon S series like the S80 is a bit larger than the SD series, and they've packed quite a bit into it feature wise. But like Captain Crash mentioned, the larger cameras usually will beat out the smaller ones in terms of photo quality.

I try to take a moment to compose the picture that I want and frame it in my display before taking it. Sometimes it just takes a few seconds to adjust where you shoot that can make a big difference. The other half of the time, it's snap snap snap and pray. :teeth:

TiggerKing and captaincrash- boy those are tempting offers! I'm gonna have to think real hard about taking some more time off work to join you lucky ducks! :thumbsup2:

Thanks LCTsMom! I'm sure the SD550 will be a great camera for you. It's so small and sleek that it'll be handy to carry around to take some excellent shots! Post some up if you get a chance.

After that you browse for your picture. hit submit
It will say image succelly uploaded or that effect
highlight I think the third link down [img (ect, ect)
I then go to edit & click copy
Open the thread you want open & paste link were you want it. it should end also with ]
you will see a long link click preview post
your image should be there if it is click submit reply

This is what I do, I know there are others ways. Some people click on the little yellow icon that looks like a mountain. Hope this helps.

I was thinking the same thing, lbgraves!!! I'm a scrapbooker, and I prefer to have pictures without the borders for my album pages. I also like to put some in picture frames around the house...and I definitely prefer the 6x8 size for both situations. Plus...the 8x10s are so expensive!!! I bought a few 8x10s last summer, but many more 6x8s. If they don't take any 6x8s, what good is the 6x8 package?

I wish they could make reprints of what you really want...size, with or without border. If they are going to throw away the original anyway, why wouldn't they want to sell you the print sizes you really want and still make money from you!!??!! Know what I mean?

All the pic's from CC don't have a border but have a little signature in the top right corner that says Castaway Cay 2006.
Non of my pic's from CC had characters. They were candids of the kids at the beach. So maybe the pic's are framed if there is a character in it.
Otherwise is was a thin white border with the little tag in the corner..

But where can I find 6x8 frames?

But where can I find 6x8 frames?
I got some at WalMart. You could also probably find them somewhere like Michael's or another craft store that sells frames, they usually have several aisles of them. :wizard:

Almost every picture except the formals - the ones with set backgrounds - have digital frames now. Almost all of the photos, except candids, are now in 8x10 size. Candids would mean those taken around the pools, at Castaway Cay on the beach, around the ship randomly. I only bought two 6x8. I bought 10 8x10s and we certainly did not stand in every line, nor did we do every picture that was available.

All pirate night photos and all restaurant photos have digital frames too.

I also do not like it.

They even put a digital little imprint into the lifestyle photos now too. I don't have a scanner or I would show this to you all.

I also dislike the boarders they put on photos. I suspect it's to prevent people from making copies of the photos, to push the Disney brand a bit more and an attempt to make the photos "special" to warrent the high cost. It's a shame when a really good photo gets ruined by this garbage.

They try to put these stuff on photos at the mall for Santa photos. I ask that it be removed before purchasing it. I wonder if the folks at shutters would be willing to reprint photos without the borders. If enough people complain, it will change.

I have scanned in the photos and removed the borders when I wanted a picture for scrapbooking. The borders are kind of neat at times, but I wish there was a choice. That will help me keep my photo bill down on the next cruises though!
