I just got off the phone and they have taken in my mom for open heart surgery. They will repair a leaky valve and may do a coronary by-pass. She should be finished at 8:15 and then will require a long recovery (3 months).

She finished surgery at 9:00 p.m. last night. She is on a ventilator and is doing as well as can be expected.

She was almost bumped at the last minute but the surgeon picked her. Later he said that she might not have lived much longer if he hadn't picked her. Her heart had deteriorated so much since he last saw her (he didn't know this going in to surgery). So, we are very lucky.

She is on the path to recovery. The doctor said she will be slower than most for her heart condition was so terrible. Each day is a struggle for her. But, she has been up for a small walk so things are finally starting to look up.

I'm so glad she is doing well so far. Love and best wishes for your mum and hope she continues to make good progress.

Best wishes for you too, it's such a worry when our loved ones are ill - make sure you look after yourself during this worrying time.

She's on the regular ward but still having great difficulty breathing and wants no visitors. She's also depressed now but the doctors have yet to diagnose it. My sister says she's made a tiny improvement but mom can't see it yet. Thanks to all for your well wishes. Like I've said, we've got a long way to go with her.

I read this with a heavy heart and can I say although she is depressed and recovery may be slow.....she woke up from the surgery. My Mother never recovered, never woke up after this surgery.. so hopefully things will perk up for you Mom and she will continue to do well. Hang in there.

My dad had quad bypass in March and he had to fight the depression. They told us it is just part of the process but to be very mindful of it. He has done really great. Prayers that your mom will recover quicker than they expect and that she will feel as great too! I'm also saying a prayer for your family.
