View Full Version : Is a D90 to much for a Newbie in DSLR world?

I've been wanting to get into the DSLR world after seeing some of the pics on this board. I am fully aware that the camera doesn't make a picture, it's the person holding the camera but I'd really like to improve my dark/night shots and my sons will be really into sports in the next year.
I won't be able to buy a camera till next year probably but I have a bridge camera now that I've really been enjoying lately. From what I'm hearing about the Nikon D90 it sounds like a really nice body but is it too much for a new guy or should I go for it if I'll keep it for years to come?
Take it slow or go for the gusto?

The D90 is a wonderful camera and it has me wanting to upgrade to it for a while now... I have a D60 currently... The D90 is an upper level beginner's camera that is easy to learn on, but can also be used by experts... You can go from Auto mode all the way to fully manual, and everything in between... It is a great size as well... I would say go for it... You can't go wrong with that one... :thumbsup2

This should give you plenty of time to "prepare", and that's half the battle. Learn as much as you can in the interim and you should be in a good position to jump right in and start shooting by the time you get it. Good luck.

i'm guessing your bridge camera has auto and manual setting ( ie av, tv) so start using the manual now if you don't and you'll be all set for the dslr...but don't expect it to be your last upgrade, more of the beginning of a long long line of upgrades:rotfl:;)

Thanks guys. I've really had my heart set on it and was hoping it wouldn't be too much. Like I said, unless I come across an amazing deal, it's going to be a while before I pick it up. Who knows, by then there might be something 10x better for the same price! Till then, I am patiently waiting.:thumbsup2

I think you'll be fine, especially if you have a bridge camera right now. The D90 is a joy to use! :cloud9:
Keep watching the sales and the release dates for the new Nikon bodies and I hope you can grab a good deal! :thumbsup2

i don't know how nikon does it but canon seems to offer rebates just before they put out a new release...or buy an older model or sometimes you can get a refurb/recertified from adorama with a 1yr warranty ( only way i was able to upgrade to a canon 40d was to sell my stuff and get a refurb, so far so good)

Yes -- as stated above, the D90 is essentially a high-end entry-level camera (seems contradictory but really isn't), and it would be an excellent first DSLR.

It's funny you say that. For someone who thought $400 was alot for a camera (my current P80) I would think that $1500 for a body and a couple lenses would be top-of-the-line but I've looked around and have seen camera's for $24,000. I think I'll be fine with my high end entry level for a while :rotfl:
Side note: with family and friends all using camera's that slip into their pockets, they all poke fun of the size of my bridge. I can't wait to hear what they say when I pull out my first tele lense:lmao:
