The Tokyo Trip Report starts here (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2440546)!

************************************************** ****
Greetings, and welcome to the pre-trip report and trip report for the Lurkyloos’ Christmas Trip to Walt Disney World, including a stay at Bay Lake Tower and more stalking of hapless photographers The Roots, who, by agreeing to shoot our wedding, unwittingly signed themselves up to be featured in and take pictures for every future Lurkyloo trip report, in perpetuity.

* Who is in your party? Lurkyloo & Mr. Lurkyloo

* When are you traveling: The second week in December, probably, unless something changes... which it very well might...

* Where are you staying: BoardWalk Inn, Beach Club Villas and Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort (a.k.a. BLT – it’s not just a sandwich anymore!)

* What Dining Reservations you have made: NONE because Disney reinstated the stoopid 90-day window for ADRs ...and stopped calling them “ADRs”...

* Any special plans, events, etc. that you have planned: Among the plans that we have planned are

At BLT: Taking a bubble bath with the bathroom shutters open so I can see through the bedroom to our view of Bay Lake (hopefully they have one-way glass on those exterior windows, or some parasailing honeymooners are gonna get an eyeful!)

At BCV: Stalking the Roots on their Disney Christmas vacation

At BoardWalk Inn: Stridently requesting a remodeled room (http://allears.net/acc/bwi75.jpg) so I don’t have to endure the hideous comforters (http://allears.net/acc/bwi33.jpg) of the old decor

At BoardWalk Bakery: Eating of peanut butter chocolate cake slices

Also: CHRISTMAS!!!! And possibly Mickey’s Very Merry Not-So-Scary Christmas Party... maybe.... if I can get past paying an extra $110 for a fireworks show, cookies, and watery hot chocolate

If you are bored and can’t wait until December, here are links to our past trip reports and various other online time-wasters...

I am so glad you are going to WDW in December and that you have decided to write a pre-trip report!:banana: As your last trip report was coming to an end I started to worry that I would have to start working again instead of reading your trip reports. I will sleep much better tonight. :cloud9:

Yeah another trip report. I must say in the past I have sort of been a Lurkyloo stalker, always reading your reports, but never posting. You have been such an inspriration when I was planning my own wedding. I didn't have a Disney wedding, instead a Plantation wedding in Louisiana, but your ideas still came in handy. And I must say at work your a hit too. I am a nurse on the night shift, and the dis keeps me awake. Everyone on my shift follows Lurkyloo around. And the Roots, I was not able to fly them the Louisiana for my wedding. (I wonder what that would cost!!) but I did have a friend use her fancy photoshop skills and try to make my pictures look like theirs.

So I, plutofreak, do somely swear to post replies to Lurkyloo's awesome trip reports, and not act like a stalker.

OMG OMG OMG---you're going AGAIN!? In December?!?! :woohoo:

You probably don't remember, but a while back (in either your PTR, your last TR...or somethin'), I tried to convince you to go in December because A. I hear it's so puuuurdy and B. we're going in December!!!

We'll be there Dec. 12-18, staying at the Boardwalk Villas, maybe we'll see you there! :santa:

Can I put in a few requests right now?

1. Can you wear the hat again? I know it's not nearly as hot as it is in May, but the hat is awesome.

2. If we happen to see you in the World Showcase, can you make Patrick to a little diddy in front of one of the countries (you know, like he did in his video)?? I cried watching it. Hilarious and inspirational all rolled into one.

AND---if you feel so inclined, I have a very sad, lonely December PTR here! (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2153842) ;)

I recently came across a campaign for a mineral water here in Germany which is sold in blue bottles - and I am sure whoever invented this has seen your wedding pictures. Have a look: http://www.christinen.de/ :goodvibes

My daughter told me that she shared some of your exploits at her middle school lunch table recently after she read about the 'stalking' of Lori's wedding. Whohoo! Welcome out of lurkdom! A Louisiana plantation wedding sounds gorrrrrrgeous - do you have pix we can see? popcorn:: Also, I feel very secure knowing that the Roots and I have an entire shift of night nurses following us around. :cloud9:

Yay, another PreTR! Dec is my fav time to go. :goodvibes

I have been trying to figure out how I can get back there this Dec. We been the last two, but that darn wedding used up most of our vacation time and Idon'twannawaituntilnextdecember!!!

OMG OMG OMG---you're going AGAIN!? In December?!?! You probably don't remember, but a while back (in either your PTR, your last TR...or somethin'), I tried to convince you to go in December because A. I hear it's so puuuurdy and B. we're going in December!!!

I totally have your back. And if you go for another degree, I guess I'll just have to keep going to WDW! :teeth:

Well, now that y'all have a second "home" down there and everything... what could be bad? ;)

I recently came across a campaign for a mineral water here in Germany which is sold in blue bottles - and I am sure whoever invented this has seen your wedding pictures.

That is uncanny! What a great idea for a campaign - now if only they'd pay me to advertise their water. I got plenty of practice (http://s157.photobucket.com/albums/t63/lurkyloo/Decade%20o%20D%20Jensey/?action=view&current=164.jpg) back in May...

I'm herreeeeee

Hi! Yes! As long as I can rent points, I can keep myself from buying... :cutie:

Although I have to agree with a poster on your other TR and say that I would happily follow along on a TR entitled 'Lurkyloo and the great Grocery Shopping Caper' at this point.

And as I told them - don't tempt me! :lmao: I loooove rambling on and on about inconsequential stuff that happens to me every day....

My daughter told me that she shared some of your exploits at her middle school lunch table recently after she read about the 'stalking' of Lori's wedding. She finds you quite hilarious and has decided she will document her summer break in a similar way for our family's amusement. See? You're even inspiring young writers to get creative!

That is SO cute! It's good practice, and she will have already written her "What I Did Over the Summer" report!

I can't wait til Christmas with the Lurkyloo's!!!!

I'm still not quite sure how it happened. It was either the fact that I said it REALLY fast or that I used the phrase "The Roots" :thumbsup2

Can't wait to read the next trip report. We'll be at WDW celebrating our 25th anniversary the week before you. Oh man, and to think we could have stalked all of YOU!!! OK - sounds good to me! Thanks for the reminder on the brownies. I'm going to need to do a Bake Day soon and knock out all the fab recipes posted in my trippie. Congrats on your 25th anniversary!!! :goodvibes

Don't you guys remember Lurkyloo's wish? You can find it in her Planning Journal. I'm sure that it doesn't take too much convincing for her.

Glad to see you are checking out the new hotel. I was going to try and stay there, but we are going to stay at the boardwalk Dec 22 & 23. How long are you staying for? When we go I have to check out the bakery since it will be oh so close.

Its always a nice way to end a trip when you know you are going back. Heck I've got 3 trips in the process of being planned. Plus I need to go back for the giant oreo, I have to say it was one of the best things to eat. I got it dipped in dark chocolate and covered in crushed oreos. My husband is going to freak when I force him to go to DTD and get my weight in giant oreos.

Any time in Dec. is special! I make a trip during the month every year; the holidays wouldn't feel right without it. :goodvibes

* What Dining Reservations you have made: NONE because Disney reinstated the stoopid 90-day window for ADRs ...and stopped calling them “ADRs”...
This perplexes me. They seem to be calling them "reservations" these days, right? But they're not actual reservations! They had it right in the first place with "Priority Seating."

Looking forward to this one! popcorn::

OOH a Lurkyloo report! Love it! Can't wait to read more...we will also be there the week between Christmas and New Years - should be a blast!

I also wanted to let you know that after reading your GORGEOUS wedding report, I bought the Passporter wedding planner and have planned out my Escape wedding in my head....even though I have neither a fiance or even a boyfriend at this point. :lmao: I know, I'm sick, I just hope he (whoever he is!) is OK with an Escape wedding! ;)

Signing up for this, once again. Can't wait to follow along on your Christmas adventures.

Hiya! Welcome aboard! :sail:

That's a great time of year to go and I definitely think you should do MVMCP just so I can read about it... and don't forget the fake snow!

Oh, good point - I do love me some fake snow! And that reminds me - they do fake snow in Celebration too!

:lmao: Ah, another giant Oreo fan.... Has he even tried one? Maybe he'd be a convert too! Our trip dates are in flux cuz we're on the wait list, but we have to get the H outta Dodge before DVC's high season starts cuz we can't afford it!

Woohoo for another Lurkyloo trip!

Also, starting in August, I'll be an attractions CP at the World - if I load you onto a ride, I might be a little starstruck!

If you physically load me onto a ride, you might throw your back out! :rotfl: How exciting - are you going to be on the CP? Everyone I know who's done it has such fond memories... :goodvibes

YAY! Now it's not so bad that your TR is ending!! I am just missing you by a month. We are staying at the BLT January 8-15th. I started my PTR too AND already referenced you in it.

At least I get to see pics and hear about BLT before I go!!

Hey cool! I'm gonna go check it out! :thumbsup2

Ooooooh! I just can't wait to follow along!!!
We'll be at the world before and after our DCL wedding the first and second weeks of Dec!!

Congratulations! You guys are going to have SO much fun! :cloud9:

Yet another Lurkyloo lurker flushed from cover here! I'm going to follow along as well! I definitely think that there should be an entry fee for following along your reports.

I love this idea of an entry fee... and it being cake. GREAT picture! :)

Can I just sit and cry? I wanna' go to WDW for Christmas! And how the heck did you get Patrick to say "yup" to going again? I REALLY want to know 'cause DH seems like he's just done....phooey. I can't even convince him to go to DL!!

Hmm... did you try making all the plans yourself and then just telling him really fast when he was sleepy or distracted? What if you lured him there with a trail of really good looking figurines and toys? :rotfl:

Yay for another trip in the works! Love your hotel choices.

I'm really excited to finally stay at the BoardWalk, and I went from thinking BLT looked like an IKEA showroom to  when we saw the model rooms in person.

I am tagging along for another PTR! I think you are going during the best time. The crowds are not as bad and you get to enjoy all of the wonderful Christmas decor!

Sounds fabulous! :hyper:

Those are my dates too. I think I'm insane.

I believe AllEars.net's Anita Answer refers to that period as "Crazy-Go-Nuts Crowded".... oh wait, no, I'm thinking of StrongBad (http://hrwiki.org/index.php/Strong_Bad)...

This perplexes me. They seem to be calling them "reservations" these days, right? But they're not actual reservations! They had it right in the first place with "Priority Seating."

Hiya, lurky! :rotfl: I hear ya - Disneyland still calls them Priority Seatings, what's with WDW? They just hadda go and make it all complicated cuz they're bigger...

I'm all for another Lurkyloo ptr/tr, even if they all seem to make me crave cake and/or cupcakes

Yes, I'm beginning to worry about that - maybe this PTR should feature a "Veggie of the Day" picture or something to encourage healthy eating... :confused3

...Nah!!! :rotfl2:

I also wanted to let you know that after reading your GORGEOUS wedding report, I bought the Passporter wedding planner and have planned out my Escape wedding in my head....even though I have neither a fiance or even a boyfriend at this point. I know, I'm sick, I just hope he (whoever he is!) is OK with an Escape wedding!

Good for you! I don't think you're sick - I think a lot of us start planning early, and it sure makes the process go smoother when the time comes. I think the trick is to, you know, be flexible on the details, cuz things change. Oh, and at least TRY to tailor it to the fella you end up with, since it's his wedding too.... :lmao:

Oh I understand needing to get out. I love that it switches over like the 24th. Hence why we are going on the 22nd. I'm a little jealous about you getting to stay so long, but we are finally planning a long trip in 2010. Then I will have a giant oreo for everyday. My DH isn't into chocolate too much plus why would I want him to like it...then I will have to *SHARE* I don't like that idea.

I totally have your back. And if you go for another degree, I guess I'll just have to keep going to WDW! :teeth:

Planning on 2 more after this one, once I recover from nursing school, so you'll have LOTS of trips in the future!

So I was thinking... the last PTR had cake o' the day. Why should we limit ourselves to one delicious genre of desserts? Why exclude icre cream, or (one of my personal favorites) cookies? Or your PB marshmallow bars? I think we need a dessert of the day now.

Your subscribers would be dropping like flies! I love a good veggie as much as the next person, but come on...cake is the best thing ever invented.

Nearly every time I read through one of your pre-tr's or tr's, I end up baking something, so my boyfriend will be glad to know that you have started a new one since he reaps the benefits of your cake obsession more then anyone else.

I see that you had to use your woman-wiles to get your DH to go to WDW again and ATG complained, too.

We need to start a club called the "Wives of DL who have husbands who don't go so often or otherwise don't like to meet internet people while at DL."

I think you will have a great time.

Just go knowing, it will be crowded, and don't let yourself get overwhelmed. We knew we may, or may not get to do everything, but we used fastpass, and just enjoy being there during that time. We ended up getting to do everything, somethings only once, but that was okay.

We went to DHS on New Years eve, they had a big firework show. A lot of people stayed after midnight, but there were a lot leaving too. Disney was very organized, with everything, and when it was time to leave, we had no problems. I'm sure being at the Magic Kingdom, or Epcot, now that may be a whole different story...lol

That cake is gorgeous! How did it taste? Your daughter is too cute by the way. :cutie:

I'll add to the cakes on here! I made this for my boyfriend 2 years ago for his birthday (which is in less then 2 weeks!) I had never worked with fondant before and that stuff is NOT fun to work with, so that is why the sides look like sand dunes, rather then a cake. It took me hours upon hours to make since I made everything from scratch (minus the fondant, I just colored it) He loved it though, bumpy sides and all.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3520/3295248707_b77a10bfbe.jpg

(you can see a larger, more detailed picture of my sand dune/Zelda cake here (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3520/3295248707_b77a10bfbe_b.jpg))

Inside was chocolate cake with buttercream frosting, which tasted almost exactly like Oreos :thumbsup2

I think you have the right idea - if I just prepared myself for the crowds, maybe I'd be OK.

That is all you have to do. We just keep reminding ourselves, and each other, we are going to have fun, no matter what, no matter how bad the crowds were, if we get to do everything, great! if not, that is okay too. We just wanted to experience NYE.

I have never seen wait times so high, but we used fastpass and took advantage of taking it all in. That was my first trip down there, in the month of December, so I really enjoyed getting to see all the decorations, and the Osbourne Lights.

We are passholders, and are very lucky to get to go about 3-4 times a year, and getting to do so, if I didn't get to ride a certain ride, or only got to ride it once, then I just didn't let it bother me, I knew I would be back.

I actually missed being down there, this past NYE. My friends agreed, so we are making our plans to return this year. :)

Mind if I ditto that?! I take the same approach; I really do try to minimize waits through good touring plans, only because of the 7yo in tow, but if it's busy, it's busy. We just roll with it and escape to a resort when it stops being fun. :thumbsup2

Looks very similar to the Cheesecake Factory's Chocolate Tuxedo Cream Cheesecake. I've never had it since I am a Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Cheesecake gal through and through, but it does look yummy!

>drool< Love it!

Of course this thread is completely dangerous for my cake obsession! Oh well...I am gonna dive right in. Here's my cake contribution for the day. We just held my DD's 6th Birthday with a Garden Tea Party theme and this was her cake

That cake is fabulous, fondant or no, and your daughter is adorable! :goodvibes

Oh, and BTW - Did I miss the back story on the three resorts in one trip decision? Was this intentional or are you still deciding? All great choices, *especially* BLT!!!:goodvibes

Hmmm... back story... prolly shoulda posted that! The reason is A) I love resort-hopping and B) We're on the DVC Wait List at Beach Club for some of the dates we wanted, so I made a backup regular ressie at BoardWalk Inn. But I've always wanted to stay there, so I'm kinda hoping the wait list doesn't come through (if it does come through we should prolly take it cuz it would cost us so much less...)

ooooo it's so Superman and Clark Kent. Love it!!

I didn't post my entry cake. Here you go.

Great cake! I think you should get that one for your DH's birthday! :rotfl:

I'll add to the cakes on here! I made this for my boyfriend 2 years ago for his birthday (which is in less then 2 weeks!) I had never worked with fondant before and that stuff is NOT fun to work with, so that is why the sides look like sand dunes, rather then a cake. It took me hours upon hours to make since I made everything from scratch (minus the fondant, I just colored it) He loved it though, bumpy sides and all.
Inside was chocolate cake with buttercream frosting, which tasted almost exactly like Oreos :thumbsup2

Wow - I think that looks great! And it sounds like it taste even better (anything that tastes like Oreos is A-1 in my book!)

That is all you have to do. We just keep reminding ourselves, and each other, we are going to have fun, no matter what, no matter how bad the crowds were, if we get to do everything, great! if not, that is okay too. We just wanted to experience NYE.

I like your attitude! :thumbsup2 I need to try to be like that. I can get kinda worked up over crowds. I think the secret must be those annual passes you have...

I am sooooooooo NOT surprised that you already have a trip planned. You are a trip machine. There is only one down side to reading your PTR....it is going to slow me down from starting and updating my TR!

I think the Osbourne lights are just plain crowded and there is no way to avoid it. People start lining up before it gets dark. I think once you get used to the number of people surrounding you it becomes less annoying and you don't feel so space deprived.

I would recommend the Candlelight processional dinner package. You still have to line up, but if you line up early you can get decent seats at the front left of the theatre (at least thats how we were seated a few years ago). I love the CP because I love hearing the Christmas story in its non politically correct format.

Forget it with the Osborn lights - just enjoy the crowded-ness! It's really not bad, because you're not trying to do more than look at things. I strongly recommend getting in the middle of NY Street a little early so you can be part of the flipping of the switch. Grab a cup of cocoa, people watch and enjoy! Once the initial "show" is over, hang tight and let folks move around until it thins out some, then stroll around to see things up close. We go every year and this approach hasn't let us down yet! :thumbsup2

As for the CP, I haven't sat down to watch it in ages, so I'm no expert on how to navigate that. (Years ago, we arrived 10 minutes early and just sat down in a bleacher. Things have changed. ;) ) But I will say this: if you don't want to deal with standing in line, you can watch the whole thing by standing behind the amphitheater. The sound's just as good.

The only tip that I can offer is one that has already been offered previously---and that is to book the CP lunch/dinner package if possible AND if possible, go to either the 6:00(ish) or 8:00(ish) show.

This year, we wanted to "Eat/Drink Around the World" on our night at Epcot, which means I can't really book the dining package. If we decide we reeeeally want to see the CP, we'll just line up like 90 minutes in advance and hope for a seat somewhere. If not, from what I understand you can still hear and sort of see what is going on, so that wouldn't be too horrible.

It seems like there are so many fantastic things that happen at night during Christmas (Osborne Lights, MVMCP, Candlelight Processional, Tree Lightings) and for us, it's going to be hard fitting them all in. :sad2:

What days are you guys planning to be there anyway? You said second week of December, but didn't give us dates. How are we supposed to adequately stalk the official stalker of all stalkers (you) while at WDW if we don't even know your dates??? These things take planning you know!!!! :scared:

My best tip is that they close the front parts of HS at the regular time but don't shoo people out of the Osborne lights for a while after the park is closed. We were there just before closing and it was a madhouse (although a zany and fun madhouse). We were staying for an after hours event so after the park was officially closed we cruised back over there while we were waiting for the beginning of our party, and there was a greatly reduced crowd enjoying the spectacle. A CM told us that they tended to keep the lights open a little longer than the park, so I don't think it just had to do with our event.

This is definitely the BEST tip. I believe they keep the Osborne Lights open for an hour after park closing. The difference is seriously like night and day! I nearly had a panic attack trying to walk down the street earlier in the night but after park close there was enough time to stop, turn, look around and take it all in! :thumbsup2

They started booking Candlelight Processionals last year on June 23rd. Not sure what, if anything, that means for this year.

annnewjerz
06-19-2009, 08:06 PM
In the past, the CP was booked mid/late June but the general concensus on the Restaurants board is that the CP will be booked at 90 days just like all other normal ADRs now.

The 6:00 and the 8:00(ish) shows are supposed to be better yes, because of darkness. I asked opinions on another board and it seemed that people said the earliest show was just fine if that's all you could do---but that the darkness really made it more special because of the lighting and the "candles" that the choir holds? Not sure about that last part.

I'm wanting to say 6pm, but you'll see it posted on the DIS and can ask any cast member. Figure on getting to NY St. around dusk and you'll be set! :thumbsup2

My best tip for the Osborne Lights is to go on an EMH night about an hour before the park closes for the night. We do it every time we go during the Christmas season (we usually go the second week of December) and are usually the only people on the street which is such a weird/awesome feeling. I believe it's every 15 minutes the lights 'dance' to the music (my favorite being to the song 'Sarajevo' it brings tears to my eyes every time!).

CP: It is a really cool thing to see at least once. We did the dinner package twice but opted out last time. We still got great seats, we just arrived about 15-20 minutes before it started. Also, I recommend bringing a sweater or something to sit on as the weather is unpredictable and it can get down in the 40's-50's and the seats are metal :scared: (and uncomfortable).

I HIGHLY recommend taking the time to see the 'Santa's around the World' in Epcot. They are very frequent in the 'performances' and are really neat to watch. Also there's a lighted 'arch' leading into World Showcase that 'dances' to the music as well. I believe the fountain at Epcot dances to Christmas music too.

MVMCP is cool to go to at least once. However, IMHO, going during an EMH at Magic Kingdom is just as good (and much cheaper and much less crowded).

Make sure you check out the goings-on at each of the resorts (and not just the typical decoration things). GF has a band playing Christmas music in their lobby, WL has sleigh rides, AKL has Christmas Ostrich egg paintings, etc. I believe when you check into your resort they'll give you a print out of everything going on at the resort you're staying at.

Ok, that's enough of my opinions :)

Here's my admission fee!

Woohoo! I just finished your other TR and I'm excited to see another one will be coming soon :thumbsup2 I'm actually going again too for Christmas, except I am literally insane and will be there December 18-27 :scared1: It will be crowded as heck but at least it won't be blisteringly hot though (I'm trying to find the positives :upsidedow)

I don't think we'll be able to see MVMCP because December 18 is the last day they do it, but I'm looking forward to all the other stuff. It's kind of stressful having to research all this new stuff (Candle light dinner packages, osbourne lights, etc) but also fun, right? :goodvibes

Glad to be following along. I look forward to reading about all the planning madness :thumbsup2

Well, my mom got the kit (with the spires and castle front) at Wal-Mart. One look at the directions, she decided that someone else had to make it. :rotfl: So some lucky baker got to make it. Sad to say though, it wasn't that good. I know cake is supposed to be moist, but not like a soaked sponge.:confused3

No pics here of any cakes as I'm not near as talented as everyone here but I do have one heck of a recipe for a whipped chocolate icing. Many many years ago my brother's girlfriend made him a cake that was iced with this whipped chocolate icing. It was from a Betty Crocker box mix. Of course, they discontinued it but my Mom is such a wonderful baker (or was) that she was able to duplicate it. We still call the cake Stacy Cake even though that girlfriend didn't last.

2 sm boxes of whipping cream
3 c. powdered sugar
3-6 T. cocoa (I use 3 but it depends on how much chocolate you love)

Chill bowl with whipping cream in it and beater in frig for a few hours. That's a tip from my Mom. Add powdered sugar and whip until thick on medium high. Frost. I make 2 10" cakes and frost between the layers and the remainder of the cake. Store in frig.

You won't believe how good this cake is. It lasts no more than a two days at our home of men/boys. :)

I'm LOVING the new pretrip report. I'm too trying to plan a trip for early December. Its driving me crazy!!!! So much more to figure out than a regular trip. Can't wait to read more and see more of these wonderful cakes!!!! WOW!!!!

This is definitely the BEST tip. I believe they keep the Osborne Lights open for an hour after park closing. The difference is seriously like night and day!

 This sounds SO cool - I can't wait!

Sounds reasonable to me. I'll see if we can't do one of the later times for CP...

But don't depsair they also have the Baba Booey, which is a peanut butter chocolate combo .

:woohoo: YESSS!!!

A friends make the cakes for me. I was happy with both. I have no real talent like that

I am looking for a cross stitch pattern for a cupcake though. I can do that.

Wow - your friend does an amazing job. And hey, I can't even do a cross-stitch pattern.

Okay, someone needs to help me get educated on Sunshine Rewards. I heard "free money" somewhere...?

:rotfl: OK, so Sunshine Rewards (http://www.***************.com/signup.php?r=5299) is a shopping website started by a DISer where you earn money in teeny tiny increments for clicking on links, taking surveys and using SR's link to any website you want to shop on instead of just going through Google or typing it in. When you use SR's link, it gives you a credit of a certain percentage of your purchase, and then it all adds up to real money eventually and you can cash out for Disney gift cards (among other kinds, plus PayPal).

You have to have a LOT of time on your hands to do surveys and offers and stuff, but over time it really adds up. We've earned hundreds of dollars using SR!

I think I have DH convinced to go back to WDW in Oct (well next Oct, but still Oct!!!)

He has been saying all along that we need a new roof, but when I told him it would be 1700 for all 4 of us in a value, he seemed more receptive.

:rotfl2: This cracked me up - new roof, or... WDW! Congrats on getting to go back!

I need to know how to work it! I never qualify for a survey & don't shop at the stores on the site.

Yeah, that's kind of tricky. Some of my fave stores aren't on Sunshine Rewards, so I try really hard to look for items I want at stores that *are* on SR. As for the surveys, there are so many women on SR that it can sometimes be hard to get one if you aren't a guy. But if you know a guy who is willing to fill out the surveys, he can do them for you!

I'm wanting to say 6pm, but you'll see it posted on the DIS and can ask any cast member. Figure on getting to NY St. around dusk and you'll be set! :thumbsup2

Thank you! I'll definitely keep an eye on the DIS.

I do so love to see all these fabulous cakes/cupcakes. I just keep telling myself that they can't taste nearly as good as they look.

Yes, I've tried telling myself "Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels" but it's usually through a mouthful of cake... :lmao:

My best tip for the Osborne Lights is to go on an EMH night about an hour before the park closes for the night. We do it every time we go during the Christmas season (we usually go the second week of December) and are usually the only people on the street which is such a weird/awesome feeling.

Great tip! I'm usually scared of EMH, but I love the idea of breezing in roght before the end of it just to see the lights!

CP: It is a really cool thing to see at least once. We did the dinner package twice but opted out last time. We still got great seats, we just arrived about 15-20 minutes before it started. MVMCP is cool to go to at least once. However, IMHO, going during an EMH at Magic Kingdom is just as good (and much cheaper and much less crowded).

Oh, and PS - LOVE the admission fee. Those peanut butter cups right on the cake sold me!

Exactly! I thought I knew everything about planning a WDW trip, then Christmas threw me a curveball, and now I'm scrambling to figure it all out! You're lucky - after MVMCP ends they do all the same stuff in the MK for FREE (well, OK, not the cookies and hot chocolate, but still...)

Well, my mom got the kit (with the spires and castle front) at Wal-Mart. One look at the directions, she decided that someone else had to make it. So some lucky baker got to make it. Sad to say though, it wasn't that good. I know cake is supposed to be moist, but not like a soaked sponge.

Wow - I've never heard of a cake being TOO moist! That's so funny how your mom bit off more than she could chew, so to speak. :cutie:

I can't tell the ads apart from the actual surveys. And when you don't get accepted for a survey, is it worth it to do the optional one where you are in a drawing for $50K?

I'll keep at it because you can never have too many Disney Dollars. Thanks!

Yeah, Sunshine Rewards can be kinda overwhelming. I don't usually do the optional survey because I'm pretty sure it isn't linked to SR to give you money. However, if you don't get a Greenfield Survey, they now have two other options for surveys you can try - the OTX and Your Two Cents surveys under the "Surveys" drop-down menu.

Mostly, I do the shopping, surveys, and paid clicks. If I'm trying to earn extra $$ to make Super Member, I'll do the Offers, but they are a drag because you have to click so many "No, I'm not interested"s to get to the end of them.

So last night we went to the hipster L.A. wedding of the guy who introduced me and Patrick (his cousin, my prom date - that guy), and I was sure to chronicle the cake(s) for y'all.

First, the wedding cake:

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t63/lurkyloo/photo-33.jpg

It was carrot cake, but I can forgive them for that, because they also had...

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t63/lurkyloo/photo-30.jpg

The chocolate cake was straight-up chocolate, and the other was red velvet and it was amazing! The cupcakes were coconut, chocolate, red velvet, and carrot. We got to take a bunch home at the end of the night because the table full of popsicle-stick girls wasn't partaking... :rotfl:

They also had this cake, which was unfortunately lemon-lavender, but at least it was cute!

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t63/lurkyloo/photo-31.jpg

They had a local restaurant-bakery called Auntie Em's do the catering - if you're ever in Eagle Rock (and I know I'm not) check them out! Here's a link to a gallery of other desserts made by this place: http://www.auntieemskitchen.com/photogallery_01.html

Oh wow - that cake is AMAZING! I love the level of detail. Re: the wedding boards, I'm sorry you felt uncomfortable about chiming in - but like everywhere else on the DIS, the people there are so sweet, they wouldn't have said boo about it!

We're only going for a long weekend since I'm a teacher and can only get away with a couple days that aren't during my built-in vacation time. We're arriving around midnight on December 11 and leaving December 15. We're staying in my parents' timeshare offsite. That was my wedding cake. There is a picture somewhere of me pointing to it and clearly saying to my mother "Look at my cake!!!!" I can't find it though, so instead I'll give you one of me eating it! Sorry it's so huge! I'm having trouble making it smaller! http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn181/karbeene/6-24-2007-35.jpg

That's a good question! I was thinking I'd just wear my fabulous black hat again, but part of me thinks I should retire it to preserve the special-osity of its place in my May trip - is that silly? :lmao:

At the very least, I need something classier than my dorky white hat, though...

So I've been neglecting my pre-trippie because we went on a 4-day vacation to some place other than Disney :scared1: over Fourth of July.

I've seen other people do this, so I'm gonna press my luck and post a link to pictures from our trip. We went to the California's Eastern Sierras (as opposed to the Western Sierras, where I grew up) to explore and get our fix of natural beauty.

We started with a trip to a funky old hot spring/swimming hole outside of Bishop and then went horseback riding in Mammoth. That night we watched fireworks over the upscale mall near our hotel (which only served to remind us how great Disney's fireworks are!)

The next day we went to Devil's Postpile National Monument, an amazing volcanic rock formation, and hiked 3 miles to Rainbow Falls. After lunch we hiked around the top of Mammoth Mountain, and after that we hiked around Hot Creek Hot Springs! I've never done so much hiking in my life, but it was fun. That night we made s'mores at the gas firepit in the swanky mall. It was set to "blast furnace" so they didn't turn out that great.

On Sunday we drove up to Mono Lake and went on a canoe tour. In the afternoon we drove to the amazingly intact ghost town of Bodie and took a living history tour there (kinda cheesy, but Patrick really got into it! His "mine job" was going to be smashing ore with a sledgehammer, and I didn't have to get a job because I was a lady!). He also really loved snapping pictures of the neat old buildings with his new camera. The cool thing about Bodie is that it isn't being fixed up - they are leaving it in a state of "arrested decay," meaning that junk left in the buildings by people when they abandoned the place between the 1880s and the early 1940s is still where they left it!

On Monday, on the way back, we stopped at the Ancient Bristlecone Pine forest to see 4,000- and 5,000-year-old trees, and then our last stop was at the Manzanar Internment Camp, which has a new interpretive center with really moving exhibits about the Japanese internment during WWII. It was soooo sad, and kind of a downer ending to our trip, but we were really glad to see it.

As you know, I am terrible at editing down large numbers of photos, so if you want to see them, I suggest you put the set on Slideshow and turn the speed up to "Warp 9"!

Here's the link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/85907592@N00/sets/72157621181274770/

Also, to continue the theme, here are some pix (one overexposed, one underexposed) of the Chocolate Pile o' Chocolate, or whatever it was called, that we had at the hotel restaurant the last night. It was chocolate mousse sandwiched between layers of chocolate cake, with a slab of homemade rockyroad ice cream and chocolate sauce on top. I thought it would be the usual bland "fudge overload" cake, but the addition of ice cream really made it!

Unfortunately after this year, no Disney in sight.....for now ;)

How is Patrick liking his new camera? Looks like you both really put it to good use on your trip, can't wait to see what you get in December.

So the camera we got is the new Sony HX1. Most of the sites have reviews out now - CNET, DPReview.com, etc. - but I think some of them kinda miss the point that this camera is not for people who want the adjustability and features of DSLR. It's more for the casual photographer who's too lazy to use Photoshop. :rotfl:

So I *almost* had a trip update to post for you guys today. Yesterday Yapta.com alerted me that the flight I'm watching had dropped from nearly $400 to $267. I hightailed it over there, but by the time I loaded Delta's website, the price had gone back up again - in the space of about 3 minutes! :confused3

I follow Rick Seany (the FareCompare.com guy) on Twitter, and he has mentioned that sometimes airlines file a really low fare to hook people but then don't actually offer seats on that route - grrrrr! I wonder if that's what happened.

However, it's prolly just as well that I didn't buy it because we won't know DH's December work situation for weeks, so I may have had to change the tickets eventually anyway. I guess it's not really a deal if you end up paying a $100+ change fee later on! :rotfl:

Well that was pretty sucky. I don't understand airlines. You know, we fly out on Spirit airlines from Atlantic City to MCO. They have these big seats in the front. It isn't first class because Spirit doesn't have that but they are two big seats next to each other. You get a ton of space and all and they are cheaper than the regular seats. We get them every time but I don't get why they are cheaper. Stupid airline.

You are such an awesome writer can't wait to hear about this one which it just so happens to fall during my wedding!! You just might get to crash another one :rotfl2: We are t-minus 5 months - FINALLY!!!

:wave2: Good to see you here - thanks for reading along! But don't tempt me - I will so *totally* crash your wedding! :rotfl:

Your article in the All Ears Newsletter might convince my parents to at least let me look at a DFTW... I will rely next on your TR from the wedding to do the rest.

...now I just need the bf to propose and to agree to it...details, details...

Oh good - I hope it helps! (And don't worry - if the bf doesn't come through, you can always have a quinceañera!)

It's really surprising to me how many misconceptions there are about DFTWs, plus it is my personal mission to help make them affordable by sharing cost-cutting tips. :cutie:

Carrie, great article in All Ears this week!!!

Hey, thanks! :goodvibes

I have to mention the AllEars.net article too-great job!! :thumbsup2

Sorry about the missed fare--hopefully something else will come your way after you know the deal with work schedules!

Thanks! Yeah, I'm holding out hope that the start-shopping-four-months-before rule still holds true.

Did anyone who ordered a cake get an e-mail confirmation?

Or I was thinking of going at the front desk a few days before to make sure it's written down.

I don't think they give out confirmations of the cake. If you order it from Private Dining, the front desk might have a record of it, but if it's at a restaurant, you need to double check at the podium to be sure they know they'll be delivering it to your table.

Where can I see this article???

I think it'll be in their article archive eventually (http://allears.net/ae/archives.htm) but if Ann hasn't already hooked you up, PM me your email and I'll forward it!

That was a great article! It was funny because at first I didn't realize it was written by you and then I read the little biography at the end, and was thinking, "hmmm, Carrie and Patrick I know those names, LURKYLOO!!" I'm still fairly new but I'm catching on!:lmao:

:lmao: That's cute! I'm so glad you liked it even before you knew I'd written it. ("Geez, that was a craptacular article about Disney wedd-- oh wait, Lurkyloo wrote it?! Well then I LOVE it!!!")

They told me to call private dining from our room to tell them we were ready for the cake.

It hasn't appeared on my ccard. Do they only charge it upon delivery?

I hope this isn't veering too far off topic, but I had a "cake situation" arise this weekend. Of course the 1st place I thought to come for advise was to Lurkyloo and all the cake-lovin' readers on this thread.:goodvibes

Here's the deal. I hosted my parents' 40th Wedding Anniversary Party yesterday. Of course the very 1st thing I planned months ago was The Cake.

Here's a pic that I emailed the baker. The only change was that my cake was to be 3 layers, not 4.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z18/cdotla/untitled.jpg

Here's what I got:

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z18/cdotla/40thAnniversary002.jpg

Here's a photo of the cake side by side with the email I sent the baker, just to prove I wasn't dreaming:

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z18/cdotla/40thAnniversary001.jpg

Is the color of the roses and accents on my cake the dusty rose/brownish hues in the photo? NO!

Are the layers hat-box square shaped? NO!

Is the brown scalloped piping around the 2nd layer similar? NOT AT ALL!

Is the top layer done in dainty, minimalist fashion? NO!

Overall, the cake I wanted was fresh, modern and elegant. The cake I got was rounded, lopsided (I don't think the pictures show this unfortunately) and messy. Check out the brown satin ribbon piping on the second layer. Yuck!

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z18/cdotla/40thAnniversary005.jpg

And worst of all - the color was sooo NOT what I wanted. I wanted dusty, muted rose/brownish color. The kicker is, that is even what the baker herself wrote on the order form which was taped to the cake box when I picked it up.

Instead, the color on my cake was what I feel is standard-issue, grocery store bakery Pink. Certainly not the gourmet bakery dusty rose color in the photo.

Obviously I ran with the cake I had for the Party and made the best of it. However, I am debating whether to raise this with the baker on Monday.

What do you think??? Am I overreacting?

I paid $294 for the cake if that matters.

Look forward to any thoughts/opinions.

And I apologize Carrie if this has gone too far off topic, even on your Cake friendly PTR!:goodvibes

Hope you start firming up your plans. I have to say I was so thrilled when I got our flights. Granted I'm spending way more time with my family than Disney(can be good, can be bad). I can't believe its almost 5 months away.

cdotla - I would definitely call and complain! That cake is nothing like the picture you sent (BTW that cake was so beatutiful!) and they will think that they did excatly what you asked for unless you tell them otherwise. For the amount of money you paid they should have gotten it right and if they couldn't, they should have told you.

Yes - I believe it will be on your hotel bill just like room service would be. When you order a cake at a restaurant, they don't charge you til you get to the restaurant. :thumbsup2

I agree with what everyone else has said. A) You should send those pix to Cakewrecks.com, and B) Definitely call to complain. Donald'sGirl already summed it up perfectly - they definitely should have told you if they couldn't make it look like the picture. How do they think that cake looks like the picture? And for that much money?!

You can lay out your arguments just as you have here - I think you're spot on! ;)

P.S. (Because I realized I needed to know this as I replied to smhogar) - how did the cake taste? :)

Carrie,

Here is my entrance fee.
This cake was from my MD Wedding Celebration.

Sharon, that cake is amazing! It is SO cute! I love all the little animal couples, and the colors are fantastic. How did it taste? What flavors did you get?

Oh my :rotfl: You should send that in to Cake Wrecks!

Hi Carrie! I hate the airline games. They should turn it in to a reality show. "Which contestant can find and book the best price without crashing her computer or losing her mind and avoid a 4 hr layover in SLC or DEN?" Good luck with that.

We'll be at DL sometime between Aug 23 and 27. I'm not sure which day, we just planned a quick trip down there to see some family.

cdotla, I really think you should complain - they should at least refund half of that cake disaster.:headache:

Unfortunately, I cannot take credit for this creation. I was looking at winter themed wedding cakes online and stumbled my way to this one. While I am not quite the avid NBC fan, I must say this cake is pretty stinkin' cool! :3dglasses

For what it's worth, I do enjoy the HMH overlay at DL each year, though!

Well Carrie:

I had a lovely bottle of wine that I bought on the way home from Niagara Falls a few weeks ago. This was during a "crash" visit to a winery in the Finger Lakes. We tasted nothing. Just picked out 6 bottles to get the 10% discount and left. It was one of those, "This looks good, and yeah...let's get this.....)

So there's this bottle, sitting in my frig, perfectly adorned with a mickey ears bottle stopper. The wine was called Carrie, but before I had the sense to get my camera so I could post a pic here, my DH consumed the rest! How dare he?

How are things going with flight shopping?

The entrace fee cakes are so cute.......look the AK wedding cake & the NBC cake.

$200 for two tickets from California?! Holy crap, that's AMAZING. To think that I thought our $130 round trip tickets from NJ were good. :guilty:

Yes, perhaps I should have elaborated more - I can't take credit for such a great deal because I used miles. Well, the fares were only $230 + tax each for a non-stop flight (let's see... that was $269 with tax), which is pretty dang good compared to the almost $400/ticket we paid last time. But I used miles to pay for all of mine and take $100 off Patrick's, so that's how we ended up spending less than $200. :thumbsup2
