It really seems like a cool thing. I just don't think that I could give up on an actual book myself either. I think it would feel odd looking at a screen that has what I want to read on it instead of a book. Just my opinion. Though I also didn't want a cell phone and now I do not know what I would do without it so.

Me too. I love my actual books and what would I do with all my bookshelves? My cousin has a Kindle and loves it, but I don't know, does everything have to be electronic? And what happens when you get to the last 5 pages of a thriller and the battery dies? You gotta wait for it to re-charge to find out who done it?
And I'm still resisting the cell phone. I do have a cheap Tracfon that I carry but hardly ever turn on.

Oh, I want one too! The gadget lover in me is jealous beyond words! The practical side of me says it's a lot of money to pay to read books, most of which I would have to buy before I can read them. As a big library user, this would be a lot more money out the door. Still, I will keep dreaming!

ok ok...I am using a big font:rolleyes1
Seriously....
I have had a Sony Reader for a couple of years and loved it. It was well used.
Since my eye surgery.....I dont have the ability to see as much contrast as I used to and the gey background was too close to the letter shade for me to be able to use it. The Sony Reader also only has three font sizes. The kindle has 6 with the largest font being equal to a 20 pt font on your computer.
One "plus" I find with the Kindle is that I have run out of places to put books. Our house isnt huge and there are only so many places to store them. I am terrible about going to the library and even worse about returning library books ...so that is out.
While there is a big cash out lay at the beginning with a Kindle...actual books are cheaper in the long run. Brand new hard New York Yimes books are usually $9.99. Classics and older books are usually under 2 bucks.
With a Kindle...you do not need to be near a computer to buy books and have them download. It uses something called Whispernet, which uses the same 3G technology as new cell phones. You do not need to have a cell phone service. The download is included in the price of the book. It takes about 60 seconds to download a full length novel.
I think the best thing about it is that it will be great for traveling. I usually take a couple books to read when I travel and they take up a huge amount of room. They are also heavy. The Kindle holds 1500 books.
You can also subscribe to newspapers and magazines and have them download to your Kindle.
With this thing you can highlight, annotate, make "clippings" and there is an onboard dictionary.
I just cant say enough about it.

I have the Kindle 2, which is the smaller size with the 6 inch screen.
The bigger one , the Kindle DX, wont be released until 6/10. I have ordered one and will make a decision once I get my hands on it.
I was certain the bigger one would be easier to read, but I'm having an easy time with the smaller one and I think it will be easier to carry.

I've read that book! I was interested in it as a historical perspective of the World's Fair, but the serial killer parts just floored me. I couldn't believe what Holmes managed to do over the course of the events unfolded.
Bundy, Gacy, and the like had nothing on that guy. :scared1:

I don't know if I can adjust fonts, the font that I have been using is just fine. I love the background lighting, (great when you are at a child's violin concert and waiting for them to perform). The only downside for traveling w/ it, in my opinion, is that I want to be reading when we are taking off and landing - the nervous parts :lmao: By the time I can turn it back on, I'm asleep.
Have you read Stephen Kings UR, it was written for and only available on the Kindle. It's not bad - a novella, so it's not very long - I think it was $2.95, that was the first one I bought.

Have you checked out audible dot com? They have audiobooks you can download, and have several packages where you can download X number of books per month for a set price. I'm on an old package, but I get two books a month for $15.95, I listen to a lot, since I have to drive a lot for work and I get tired of the radio all the time and there aren't enough podcasts. :rotfl:

Kevin, I'm so glad you like the Kindle!
We've had a Kindle since the Kindle 2's were released. Someone mentioned curling up with the device. I'd definitely say that's possible. Once of the nice things about the design of the Kindle and the look of the screen is that you forget you have an electronic device in your hand.
The thing I like most is the ability to download samples of the books I want to buy.
Kevin, I hope you'll post a review of the Kindle DX when you get it. I'll consider purchasing one, especially if there's a subsidized version available. I wish you all would do an occasional technology podcast. :thumbsup2

The Kindle would be great to have especially for book club. Not all books are "keepers" and if they were on the reader I wouldn't have to feel guilt about trading them. I know that when trading, books go to good homes, but getting rid of ANY book is very difficult for me!
(BTW, last month was The Art of Driving in the Rain, it was really good!

Hmmm, I'll check that book out. I have the Kindle 1, and I like that I can delete the book after I read it. It stays in my "library" on Amazon so I can always retrieve it. I can also download documents from the computer, though I haven't done it yet.

We love our Kindle. I bought the Kindle 2 and had it delivered the day it was released.
My wife's the real bookworm (she's always reading 7 different books at the same time - literally), and she's really enjoying it.
The greatest positive comment came on the Friday after she received it. She found herself *twice* reaching towards the upper right hand corner to 'turn the page'. She was that engrossed in the book, that the device seemed exactly like a book to her!

I LOVE my Kindle 2! I just got it last week and I'm flying through the books! It took me a couple hours of reading to reach that "unaware" state that you get when reading a book. Once you've used it you just keep on moving through the pages, just like a regular book!
One wonderful thing that I've noticed since using it is that my carpal tunnel hasn't kicked in even once! My right thumb and index finger start aching and falling asleep after holding a book open, especially if it's a big one. Don't miss that at all! Also, it's nice to be able to kick the font size up when my eyes get tired.
It's great to be able to just download a book, whenever I want it, instead of dragging myself and the family into the book store. (cheaper too!)

Actually you can read right through take off. The way the Kindle works is that it splashes the screen with the new print and then turns off. This is one of the major advantages of an eInk display over an LCD. As long as you turn the radio off so it isn't looking to connect to the EVDO network it only turns on when changing the pages.

Obviously you haven't been on the flights I have with the nazi flight attendents. DOES IT HAVE AN ON/OFF SWITCH - THEN TURN IT OFF!!!! and they don't believe it's off unless the screen is black :lmao:

Yeah, flight attendants aren't always up on technology and it might be a bit frustrating to try to explain to them how it works. I remember how long it took them to grasp the idea that there is a plane mode on most smartphones.
I would put it away and let them go sit down for take off and then just take it back out. You know it is off so it won't do any damage. Of course no electronics really will but that is a subject for a different thread.

Try using someones computer in the states, or a library.
So once I have bought it and had it shipped to a US address, I purchase books through the device so it shouldn't matter where I am at or from after that? I wonder if it would decline my Canadian credit card :scratchin

Get yourself a US based proxy. You won't be able to use the whispernet but you can load the books through your PC. The TOR network allows you to specify your exit point geographically. I will warn you it requires putting on your propeller hat to configure but it will take care of your non-US IP.

I would get a Kindle, but I have always wanted to have a large bookshelf when I got older. I remember walking into my professor's office one day and seeing his massive library that needed to have it's own Dewey Decimal System. I have ALWAYS wanted that. I'm kind of like Belle from Beauty and the Beast. I think the Kindle would hinder me from reaching that. I know, I'm old fashioned.

I have the 2nd gen ipod touch. (About $300.00). It is just like an iphone w/out the phone. I downloaded the "Kindle" application for free. I connect with my wireless internet connection, and I am able to get Kindle books. The best part? It has a back light! I was reading it in a dark theatre the other day. I really am happy with it. It doesn't have all the features of a Kindle (I don't think it reads to you), however I like the light up option. Besides, the ipod touch is awesome for so many other reasons!
... I have to add that if you ever have a problem with your Kindle, Amazon.com customer service is awesome. Mine just died about 9 months after I got it (Kindle1), and resigned myself to the fact that I would just have to buy another one, since now I can not live without it. I decided to try calling Amazon Kindle CS to see if they had any tips before I bought a new one, and they sent me a replacement, free of charge, no questions asked!!!! it arrived in like 2 days!!! I was very impressed- it seems that they can see how long you have had it through the activation info, so they knew I was still within my 1 year warranty. Now I love my kindle even more!

I got my Kindle last November and LOVE it! I have always been a book junkie, and packing for beach or leisure vacations always involved several books taking up valuable suitcase space. My boyfriend is so frustrated over the shelves filled with books that I can't part with...
The beauty of the Kindle is that my library can grow and grow, but the physical space in my already cramped basement library does not get more crowded. My inner 2 year old LOVES the immediate gratification of "I want it now" and 60 seconds later, I am reading!
For example, a few weeks ago I was listening to the podcast from the podcast cruise, and before the end of the podcast, I had downloaded "Creating Magic", the book discussed, for my Kindle.
Visually, the text on the page feels very much like a book; it's kind of hard to describe, but it's not like reading on a computer screen...it feels more like paper to look at. It's very comfortable, and I love that I can move around to any position I would normally read in and there's no change in the visibility of the text.
As far as the battery goes, as long as the wireless is turned off, it will last for several days, unless you are doing a really long marathon weekend or something. I was sick a few weeks ago and curled up and read for about 10 hours a day, 3 days in a row, and by the third day, I needed to charge the Kindle. Usually though, I go a week or two between charges. When the wireless is on, even if you're not actively using it, the battery goes a lot faster.
I've even taken it to the beach (in a ziplock just in case) and was surprised how well I could read in the sunlight.
LOVE LOVE LOVE the Kindle. Could live without it...but don't want to! One word of warning: it's very easy to impulse buy and spend more than you planned to...Electronic books ARE cheaper, but when you buy way more of them because you don't have to worry about carrying them to your car, or fitting them on your shelves...well, let's just say the vacation fund could be at risk!!!

Wow! That would be amazing for me! Sometimes my eyes can get a little tired from reading (mainly academic books, but sometimes normal fiction) or the sentence structure is a little odd so I don't understand what it's saying (yay being dyslexic!). Great customer service too. I was Kindle pre-Oprah, before Kindle was cool. I just posted to Facebook that I'm very pleased. Amazon is sending me a replacement Kindle (first generation - as that is what I have). Mine is about 10 months old and it's developed a crack on the back cover near the on/off and wireless buttons. Since it's never been dropped or anything, I think it must be a stress fracture or a week place in the plastic. I wasn't sure what they'd do, since it's technically still working, but they are sending me a replacement this week.

I am usually a murder mystery, suspense, psychological thriller type person. But I ended up buying Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris. I guess it is technically a mystery series. I bought the book Sunday morning, started Sunday afternoon and finished it yesterday afternoon. So it was a good read!

I like the same sort of books too. Glad you were able to pick a good first one to enjoy on your Kindle. I'm waiting to see what happens with the new Kindle that is supposed to come out- the third one, I think. Unless it is out already, but I didn't think so. After that, then maybe it would be a good birthday or Christmas present. :)

Amazon had to include the ability for a publisher to disable the text to speech function. Random House is the only publisher who has started using the "kill bit" but keep that in mind if you need the function.
There are some blind-advocacy groups who are exploring if this is something that violates the ADA. I don't know if it does or doesn't but I don't want to see (no pun intended) anyone get the device for that function only to find their favorite books don't have that feature.

You can change the font.
There are 6 font size settings.
The largest setting is approximately equal to a 20 point font in Word.
Hope that helps.

But, she has talked about getting a "regular" kindle as well.

Pros
- holds 1500 books
- can subscribe to newspapers and magazines and have then delivered
wirelessly
- more like reading a "real" book than the iPhone app (which I also have)
- portability. Awesome for travel.
- downlaods book in 60 seconds without a computer
- saves the space of 1500 books
- "greener" that 1500 books
- Books can be shared betwen Kindle and iPhone.
- Font size....any book can be a large print book
- Remembers your place in the book you are reading, even if you jump to
another book.
- Book prices. Most hard cover books are $9.99 instead of $25.00
- Charge lasts quite a while. You can make it last longer if you turn wifi off.
- Isnt back lit, making it easier on your eys.
- Lighter than a hard cover book
- Amazon keeps your purchases on file making them avaioable to you even if
you delete title from your Kindle
Cons
- Pricey
- Uses this weird "location" thing instead of page numbers
I have the Kindle iPhone app and while it's great when you are stuck in line or waiting in the Drs office....who can actually sit down to read on a cell phone?
The back light will eventually cause eye strain and you will kill your battery flipping pages.
That's it. I cant really think of anything negative about the Kindle.

This thread having sparked my interest, I went to Amazon to read some of the reviews. One person said that he loves it but some of the books he has bought have been "pulled" and he was not able to download them again even though he paid for them. This part bothers me some.
Although 1500 books is alot and the third one will hold twice as much, I guess I probably wouldn't need to delete any books for a very very long time. Or maybe there is a way to save deleted books on your pc, just in case. And there is also the point that most books I never re-read anyway. But still... :confused3 Any thoughts about this? :)

I bet you could download them to your PC so then you don't have to worry about the book being "pulled". Hadn't heard of that but honestly I've had my Kindle less than a week.
Two pro's (someone asked for pro's and con's) that I am enjoying are rather silly but here they are:
*When I'm curling or straightening my hair I don't have to find something to hold the book open and then stop to flip the page and then reestablish my book holder (can't imagine why Kevin didn't mention this is his pro's :confused3)
*It is easy to sit or lay in any position and continue to read you don't have to worry about which side of the book you are reading from and readjusting it, etc.

Actually, those are very good points! :thumbsup2 I don't read while I'm curling my hair though- that is what the podcast is for! :rotfl: But sometimes I like to eat while reading and it is hard to hold a book and a sandwhich at the same time. And I hate flipping sides in bed to read the other side of a book because my arm is tired of holding the book open!
Another bonus just occured to me. You could even read in line at Disneyland (and/or World). ;) If they offered Disney books and guidebooks that would be awesome! :thumbsup2

It will depend on the type of file the library allows you to download. Kindle does not read every type of file.
There is not a "backlight" available. The technology Kindle uses is opague and doesnt allow light to shine through.
You would need to use a book light or some other source of light in order to read in a dark setting.
Hope that helps.

If you get a DX it will support PDFs natively. The Kindle 2 will support MOBI, PRC, and TXT. A little wander through Google Land will get to to some open source converters.
You can't send them to your Kindle through the web interface yourself, you will have to use USB. If you want to download form a library you will have to save the file on your PC, do the conversion if necessary, and then tranfer it to the Kindle yourself.

Because you can carry one slim device with you and not multiple large books and papers and magazines that are hard to fit in your carry on! My office mate has one and it looks great - just like reading from paper. I want one too. My birthday is in two weeks also..... here's hoping...

The kindle is definitely a luxury item. However, for someone with a visual impairment, they're a godsend. You can blow the text up, or in many cases have the text read aloud to you. It's certainly not the same as a professional performance (a la audible or a book on cd), but it can be the difference between getting to read something or not. Let me give you an example. DW would like to read the new Abigail and John biography. She picked it up in B&N to look at it. The print is too small for her. She was really disappointed. A large print book will cost $30+ if available, and often books on CD are unavailable, terrifically expensive, or months later in coming out. On the Kindle, she can get it for $15 and enlarge the text to suit her.
My wife is lucky enough to be able to get books on tape from the state library for the blind (for free), and our public library in town, although suffering from budget cuts is a delight to work with to try and find large print versions of books for her. But nothing beats the experience of being able to pick up a book, just like other people do, and to commence reading.
And sometimes she shares it with me. :) That's the best of all! Does everyone need one or want one? Nah. We love ours, though. Other people are going to have different priorities. (We don't have an iphone! <gasp>)

Kevin--
I heard on the Podcast you were reading "Devil in the White City".
GREAT read. I keep recommending this to just about anyone I know that reads novels. It's such a great historical reference and a pivotal time in our (American) history. I'm not a fan of true crime but the way the author weaves the stories of the crimes and the World's Fair is awesome.

I had heard raves about this book and the subject fascintaed me.
I loved the Fair history...enough that I read an excerpt on the show.
The crime part...not so much.
When the author would switch from the Fair to Holmes, I found myself waiting to get back.

The first thing you notice is that entire Kindle 2 is the same size as the Kindle DX screen. This is much bigger.
Instead of buttons on both sides....DX has buttons down the right side only.

Ok, Kevin...you've had the DX for 24 hours now, and the verdict is....???
The Kindle DX is a very cool piece of gadgetry.
The entire Kindle 2 is the same size as the screen on the DX. That should give you some idea how much bigger it is.
I have some opinions....and they are just that....opinions.
The pros:
- The DX is much BIGGER
- It only has buttons down the right side (instead of both sides like the K2)
- Having the larger screen allows for more words on a page, much like a
regular book.
- You can store 3000 books as opposed to 1500.
- I imagine the larger size would be great for newspapers and magazines.
The cons:
- The DX is much BIGGER
- It's not as convenient "size wise" as the K2
- The screen rotates so that it can be read in portrait mode or landscape
mode. This would be a pro except for the fact that I read in bed alot.
Unless you keep the DX straight up and down, the screen rotates with the
slightest angle. I can lay on my side and read the K2. I cant do that with
the DX unless I read in landscape mode which means the buttons are
across the top or the bottom.
- I read in a lot of dark places. I read in bed. I read while John is watching
TV. You get the idea. Because of this....I use a book light frequently. I
found a really bright light for approximately $13 at Books A Million. It has no
name on it. The page on the DX is too long for the booklight to work
effectively. It works fine on the K2 screen and illuminates the entire page.
This is not the case with the DX. I find myslef squinting or worse
yet....moving the light around.
- The size of the DX makes it cumbersome to hold unless you are sitting in a
chair or in the car. If you enjoy reading in any other position, it's hard to
find a comfortable way to hold the DX...and I have big hands.
As you can see....the cons have nothing to do with the way the DX works or doesnt work. All of the cons have to do with my comfort. I'm just having a hard time getting a feel for it. This is not something that happened with the K2. I fell in love with that out of the box.
I guess my thought is that I dont see a benefit for me as far as the DX is concerned. I dont read pdf files. I dont read technical jourmals etc. I read pretty much for enjoyment.
With all that being said...I can imagine taking my Kindle 2 anywhere and everywhere. I imagine coming up with reasons to leave the DX home. I think that it's something that would eventually get pushed aside and ignored.
This is just way too pricey a toy to be ignored.
For me....the Kindle 2 is a far more successful purchase. I'm pretty sure the DX is being returned.
Hope that helps

Nice review Kevin. I am not a Kindle user but do follow a lot of the technology podcasts and news since I am in technology. The contention out there is that the main reason for the DX will be for newspapers and textbooks. Amazon hasn't really stated this definitively but it does make sense.
The ability to natively support PDFs is pointed at as a way to allow professors to get notes and presentations onto the device easier. The NY times has tossed around the idea of a subsidized reader that can be included with subscriptions and there have been magazine publishers that have mentioned that as a future model.
The Kindle seems to be acting as a proof of concept device for Amazon. I don't believe Amazon is interested in selling the Kindle as a hardware device as much as selling the ebooks that go onto it. I find it interesting that instead of waiting for someone else to make a good ebook device they stepped up and did it.
I know this isn't a review but might give you pause to consider that the DX is not really meant to be an alternative to the K2 as much as a different product that has been put out in anticipation of a change in the way information such as text books, newspapers, and magazines is distributed.

I LOVE my Kindle!!
Love it,
Love it,
Love it!!
I got the Kindle 2 as a belated Christmas gift, and I couldn't be happier with it!
I resisted getting one for a long time - DH kept trying to buy me one, but I insisted that I would miss 'Real' books too much. In addition, I had just recently (finally!) begun utilizing my library, since the money I was spending on books was getting astronomical. So, it seemed silly to start 'buying' books once again.
I actually found a happy medium. I do a few rewards programs, so when I acquire enough to cash out, I always get Amazon gift certificates. I also get them from family and friends for holidays, birthdays, etc. This way, I never feel like I'm shelling out a lot of money. I also still use the library. I trade off. I'll read a kindle book, then I'll read a library book. This way, I'm getting the best of both worlds!
Also, books have always been my 'feel-good' item, if you know what I mean. When I'm down or depressed, I don't go buy myself a new wardrobe or a big box of candy - I buy books - LOTS of books! lol So, there are still times when that mood will strike me. For example, some of you may know that I lost my Grandma three weeks ago. Needless to say, I was very sad and depressed. So, off I went to Barnes & Noble to buy a whole bag of books! Yes, I've read them and am ready to pass them on already, but so what - they filled a need! :)
So, I love my Kindle, but I still love 'real' books, too!! For traveling, there is NOTHING better than a Kindle. I love sitting in the airport, not needing to hold anything more than my little Kindle. I can also fit it in my handbag, so I'm always taking it out while waiting in Doctor's offices, etc. I wouldn't trade it for anything!!

Kevin, it totally helps! Thanks so much for taking the time to type all of that out. It reinforces what I have been thinking...that while the larger screen size of the DX is nice, the reduced portability factor is an issue.

Well, I thought I wanted a Kindle too, but then I noticed that Amazon was talking about downloading books to the Kindle IPHONE app. I went to the app store, and sure enough, there was a FREE kindle book reader for my beloved IPhone. I downloaded it as fast as was possible, and I have to tell you - it is Wonderful. I works like perfection, is very easy to use, and the best of all (did I mention this part), it was FREE. Fonts are adjustable. The purchase system works flawlessly. It has booksmarks, and of course easy swipe page turning. And all those 5.00 books that normally cost $20.00 plus. Love it.

So, can those who own the kindle confirm that there is no annual / monthly fee.
I was in Borders last weekend and a gentleman was discussing the Sony Reader w/ an employee and asking about the kindle. The Borders employee told the customer that the Kindle charged an annual fee whereas the Sony reader didn't.
I don't think he bought the Sony but I thought that was interesting.
I'm going to keep w/ the kindle app on my iPhone for now, I'm trying to keep myself of a money diet. Maybe if I get a good bonus next quarter, I'll get one, but for now the iPhone app is good enough and just the right price.

First....let me state that I do not own Amazon stock or make a commsion on selling Kindles.
I have owned both the Sony Reader and the Kindle.
I loved my Sony Reader. It was well traveled and well taken care of.
With the Sony Reader, you must purchase your books through the Sony Reader E book website. There is no monthly fee involved. You buy the device and you buy the books.
The biggest "complaint" with the Sony Reader is that you must be able to hook to a computer to buy books. It is the only way to get books to the device.
I would have stayed with my Sony Reader had I not had eye problems. The reader (at least the version I owned) had a grayish background and darker, but still grayish font. I just couldnt read it. Also...it had three font sizes.
Now to the Kindle....
I was intrigued by the Kindle because I had read that there are 6 font sizes available. I got to see one up close and there are 6 font sizes. The largest font is equal to a 20pt font in Word.
Also...the background (or page so to speak) is a much whiter than the Sony Reader. With the increased contrast and bigger font, I am able to read much better.
The Kindle does not have to be hooked to a computer to download books. It uses something called Whispernet technology. It's my understanding that it runs like a cell phone service, but THERE IS NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE OR SPECIAL FEES INVOLVED. You pay for the device and you pay for books.
With the Kindle, you can subscribe to magazines, newspapers, blogs etc. There is a subscrition fee and the periodical is downloaed to your Kindle at the stated time. No additional fees at all.
With a Kindle you can get a rudimentary internet connection that works best with text only sites. You can read pdf files. There is an onboard dictionary (not on the Reader) With a Kindle you have access to Amazon.com. Most folks feel that this has a much larger book selection that the Sony Reader site. I myself, never had a problem with the Sony site. I always found what I wanted to read.
Some folks complain that all books are not available on e-readers yet. Please dont hold me to these details, but it's my understand that books published between 1922 and 2001 or 2002 may not be available in the Kindle or Sony format. This has something to do with the publishing rights.
Books published prior to 1922 are now in public domain. Digital publishing righst were not negotiated prior to 2001 or 2002. This means that many, many books are not yet "digitalized".
If I am wrong regarding the dates....please dont email me or PM me. I'm just explaining what I know.
Finally....in my experience.....both e-readers perform the same function. Each has it's own bells and whistles. Both are great devices for reasons I've explained earlier. If you do some research....I'm sure you'll find out which (or neither) is right for you.
As for the iPhone App......I think it's great for reading in line at the bank or while picking kids up forrom school but I cant picture sitting in my comfy chair for a couple of hours of reading on my phone.
One of the cool things that Kindle does is remember where you left off...or the last page you read. The other thing is does is sync all of your Kindles, so if you have a Kindle 2 and an iPhone app.....Kindle puts the same info into both devices.
I had read a few pages of the book I'm currently reading on my iPhone Kindle. When I went back to my regular sized Kindle it let me know that I had read further then the last page read and wanted to know if I wanted to jump ahead to where I left off when reading on my iPhone. Pretty cool.
Again....I'm not selling either device....just offering my help.
There are no additional fees for either device other than what you purchase or those associated with that to which you have subscribed.

Thanks for the quick answer, I just thought that wasn't very ethical of the salesperson at Borders, but since I wasn't sure, I didn't say anything. And she may have just not known, but I would hate for this gentleman to not get what he wanted based on what the salesperson told him. I work in consulting and it KILLS me when the sales people tell our clients all the wonderful stuff our software will do and then we have to come back and tell them it doesn't EXACTLY do that. So I have to admit to a bit of prejudice against sales people.
That is a pretty cool feature that it can tell you where you left off on your other device. Now if they had my favorite TVGuide available I'd be buying it tomorrow :rotfl:

Just got mine today! And like Kevin, I fell in love with it right out of the box! Having so much fun with it and it is super easy to use.
That being said, my husband came home from work (not knowing that my Kindle had just arrived--I had been waiting anxiously all week) and said that he heard on the news while driving home that the Kindle is back-ordered 4-6 weeks. :scared1:
He was trying to break it to me gently, since I had been attacking the mail carrier every day! He was relieved to see that mine had just arrived and that we wouldn't be getting sued but the USPS. :lmao:
However, for those wanting one, move quickly.

Kevin, I just heard Steve Gibson on Security now talking about the Kindle DX and he mentioned that you can turn off the auto rotate feature. I noticed you had mentioned you had some issues with that.
I don't own one personally but the gist of the reviews I have heard have been to stick with the K2 unless you are doing a lot of work with technical manuals, newspapers, or text books.

I just noticed that Amazon has dropped the price of the Kindle 2 down to $299. i wish they would have done that a month ago when I bought mine.
