I am so not a hat person, but since our next trip will be at the end of July I think I need one. Baseball hats really don't look good on me, so I was thinking of a visor. Anyone have any cute hat ideas?

I had to laugh at your post because I am sooo not a hat person either.
I look like such a nerd when I have a hat on. I know it's not a fashion show but I still don't want to look like an idiot.
Last year, I purchased a parsol from the China pavilion in Epcot. I loved it!
I also have thin hair so I have to be careful. Even if I were to wear a hat, I get such horrible 'hat head' and would be so embarassed if I had to take it off for a sit down meal. Oh woas me!

I, too, am not a hat person or a sunglass wearing person for that matter. But I quickly became one on our first trip to WDW...
I bought a cute visor hat from Animal Kingdom and still use it to this day when I go walking. That and my shades I don't leave without. It makes a world of difference wearing at least something to cover your heat, eyes and face, along with sunblock.

My mom is not a hat person either. Last weekend she found a visor make specifically for women by Adidas. I think we found it at Academy, but I'm sure any sports store would have them.

Does the visor go all the way around her head? I saw VEra Bradley visors that don't wrap around, they just stop above the ears. Do you think that style is too old lady-ish though?

LOL about hat head! I think that's what concerns me! I have bangs and the though of how they'd look after being squished into a hat all day scares me!! I like the parasol idea, but then it's one more thing to carry around - or is it compact to fit into a bag?

I agree - I always wear sunglasses, but that doesn't seem to be enough to keep the sun out - definately need something on the head!

I use a foam visor you can see here: http://www.miraclelacevisor.com/. I purchased them in lots of colors several years ago when Disney was putting them on clearance for really cheap at the water parks! Lately, I've just seen them at Disney at AK and the patriotic stores at MK & Epcot (in red/white/blue patterns). They're great because they don't squeeze your head and give a headache like the visors with bands that go behind your ears. I have really short hair and just put the stretchy band sort of under my hear, so it disappears in back. I also have really short bangs in front, and the visor goes under and pushes them up. If they end up sticking straight up when I remove the visor, I just wet a bit and sort of squish them back down - but that's the beauty of a short haircut for me!

My DD started out with this hat http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v600/cablekatie/Disney%20Vacation/IMGP6188-1-2-1.jpg
It's raffia-like and doesn't handle getting wet.
She bought this one in AK. It's rain-resistant, and UPF-coated

I had laugh because of all of the replies saying "I'm not a hat person"!! I think we should all form a club! I go for the visor. But, if you have thin or fine hair, also consider putting a non-oily sunscreen on any part in your hair! My poor scalp has been burned a few times! With all the humidity in Orlando, I just wash my hair, put it in that pony tail and stick the visor on! I digress, but aren't we all just amazed at the women who have perfect hair and make-up in 98 degrees and humidity? They must use a ton of hair spray to keep that (which I personally just can't do). My daughter calls it "helmut head"....LOL....long reply...but visor (w/sunscreen) always looks pretty cool!

OK, I am sooooo not a hat person either,
I actually think that ladies golf type visors are pretty cute.
I get heaches from the hard ones that sit above your ears, so these are a lot more comfortable to me.
Example below :)

Hats are awesome....folks just need to find the *right* hat.
Whatever hat you get, just make sure it actually gives your head (not just your face) sun protection and is breathable.
I like the hats from Sunday Afternoon (http://www.amazon.com/Sunday-Afternoons-Adventure-Sun-Adults/dp/B000JUDPVC/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top) with the veil to protect your neck. They make different styles, though. I also like hiking hats because they have great sun protection plus UPF protection.
I plan to pick up this one (http://www.amazon.com/Womens-Sun-Hats-Resort-Hat/dp/B000JWLP4O/ref=pd_sbs_a_3).
We are picking up this one (http://www.rei.com/product/781064) for DD...

I'm interested in this thread because I really feel it's important to wear a hat to prevent sun stroke. I'm shocked at how many people use visors. Those don't protect the head in any way.
I've used baseball style hats for our last few trips but I'd like something more stylish and that looks better on me plus I'd like something not as tight to the head so I can wear some kind of hair clip if I want (I've lot LOTS of hair; very thick and long). I'm hoping to see other options. I like the looks of that one with the animal print scarf around it. Boy do I wish I could try it on. I need something I can walk into a store and find so I can see how it actually looks on me (it's amazing how things can look so good in a picture and then look so wrong when tried on).
I'm really looking forward to seeing what other people use.

I highly recommend a Tilly hat! They're kind of pricy, but they come in different styles. See here: www.tilley.com. My husband and I both got them before our last trip to WDW, and loved them. They come in wide brims and protect face and neck from sun. They are collapsible, can get soaked with no problem and are warranteed even from loss. Find a store that you can try them on for the best fit and style. Thy also have a wind strap that tucks inside the hat that you can use when needed so you don't lose it on a ride.

ok, if it is old lady-ish...then i, at 39 (seriously, i am 39....not the "39 and holding" thing....) am an old lady. can't stand the strap of a regular visor going the entire way around my head. i am also a card carrying member of the "can't stand wearing a hat" club.
have been thru 3 very nice WDW visors over the years. stay away from the white one...shows the sweat stains too much around the band (eewww!) they whip off and on real quick like without totally messing up my hair too. (as i take that puppy off as soon as i go inside any portion of an attraction and whip it back on as soon as i go back out in the sun. i just feel like i have a better field of vision without it on. ok, i know i am strange.)
have forgotten my sacred visor at the resort before and always end up with a headache that day from the sun beating down on my eyes/face. even with sunglasses, the rays are strong there and the rays that creep in the top of my sunglasses onto my eyes/face always give me killer headache.
ROCK THE VISOR!

I wear a visor that I bought at the park. The front is rafia and the head band park is black and says Walt Disney World in small letters. It didn't give me a headache at all. I need a visor to help keep the sun off my face. I can't stand a full head hat 'cause it makes me too hot when the heat can't escape from the top of my head.

I agree that visors are terrible if you are interested in protecting your head from the sun. They only shade your face, you'll sweat simply because the top of your head is baking in direct sunlight.
+1 for Tilleys.
There are many brands that make great hats...Outdoor Research, Columbia, Patagonia, The North Face, REI (only available in REI stores), even Nike has decent baseball cap styles.
If you go to camping/fishing/sporting goods stores, you should find a wide variety of quality hats (and visors if you're so inclined) to try on. Whatever you choose, I still recommend you pick one up that has UV protection and breathable fabrics/vents. That way you not only protect your entire head, but you get good air flow, too.
A quality hat is a worthy investment.

We just got my dh a Tilley hat (a great guy on eBay has their classic hat for $60 with free shipping - super deal!) and I got a couple of Wallaroo Casual Traveler hats.
I have baby fine, thinnish hair AND bangs - and I would never go w/o a good hat with at least a 4" brim. I had a sun cancer removed from my face when I was only 30 yo - no way am I going to jeapordize my life to melanoma - I wear a hat.
Wore my new Wallaroo today to ds8's ball game and it did a SUPERB job. It's really cute with the brim turned up (some pictures show it with the brim down and it looks awful), and they offer several reversable styles with a cute hawaiian print on the inside and a plain color on the outside. They come in loads of colors and sell in the $30-40 range. Wallaroo makes a lot of different style sun hats, the CT just really fits my personality.
I bought the pale blue at a luggage store here in town for $36 and ordered the plain white from the same eBay store that sold us dh's Tilley hat for just $30 with free shipping.

My brother is undergoing his second surgery for skin cancer on the top of his head. :scared1: I and DH are, ahem, maniacal about these things.
My DH wears what we call an "australian" in my family - the canvas fedora with a mesh roof. And I wear either my "ugly" hat (a crushable omni-shade Columbia boonie) or my "old lady gardner hat" (a paper-straw hat with a HUUUGGGGEEE brim).
Yes, a bit hotter and sometimes unwieldy, but we both think of my brother and don't complain.

I usually weat a baseball style cap made out of breathable material. Yesterday, though, I bought a hat from a Columbia Outlet Stor that I really like. It is a bucket style hat that will cover my ears and somewhat shield my face. And it looks fairly cute.

A baseball hat tends to work well because if you put your hair up, there is less chance of you losing it on a ride :)
But I usually put it in my shirt anyway

'This is exactly what I was thinking. Doesnt a hat make you feel even hotter?
I have a great visor that I absolutely love. The best thing about it is that the band is held together with Velcro - that means that I can unhook the band and loop it through the strap of my purse, fanny pack, or backpack really easily when I'm not wearing it.
It looks like it's made out of a straw-type material, but it's really some type of fabric. Has a nice big brim to shield my face. You can also loosen or tighten the band as needed (I hate those visors that aren't adjustable - some are very tight - I must have a big head!). Cost around $25 at a local Washington State store called Fred Meyer, and came in several colors.

A hat is not meant to cool you down. A hat is meant to protect your head and face from the sun. Burned parts and headaches and sunstroke and skin cancer happen when you don't cover your head.
Believe me, when you see your face with a dime-sized hole in it during a Moh's surgery, you will not be happy that you "were too hot to wear a hat". 12 yrs on, I've had no more cancers. The plastic surgeon did a fabu job and you can't tell that I ever had that much skin missing from my cheek. But I still have to answer loads of questions every time I fill in a life insurance form, and I still have to go in once a year for an all-over body check.
All b/c I didn't wear enough sunscreen and a hat.

I wear bandanas and scarves. My hair is very thin and I burn easily on my scalp, so I NEED to have it covered during the sunny parts of the day. (Although after 5pm or so, I'm usually okay to go uncovered.)
All the summer scarves work great tied around your head like a very wide headband that protects your head. Let's see if I can find some pictures of what I'm talking about.....

And when wearing a nice scarf as your head covering, you can easily go into a restaurant for dinner without having horrible hat hair...

I find that a tight fitted hat makes me hot unless I have my hair off my neck (I have long thick hair). A looser hat made with a breathable material designed for air flow will help keep me cooler because it keeps the sun off my head which is something that heats me up.
