:confused3Does anyone know how many quarters and pennies fit in the M&M tubes? I'm starting to hunt for the pre-1982 pennies and wasn't sure how many I need per tube.

I love carrying the quarters and pennies in the M&M container. It keeps them all in one place. But ... I don't know how many will fit especially since there are 2 sizes of tubes. Why not measure a stack (2 quarters and a penny) and then the tube? A little math won't hurt you. Promise ;).

I beg to differ with you! :rotfl:

I actually was just thinking about this myself yesterday before work! My question for you all (and I am sorry for asking on your thread chabs!) can you buy a pressed penny book at WDW? And if not, where do people get them? We decided we will let the kids do some this year but I don't want them lying around their rooms. I want them to have somewhere to put them.

In the smaller M&M tubes I was able to fit about a roll and a half of the pennies and and a roll and a half of quarters in another.

As far as the pressed pennies books go, I saw them at the shops throughout our trip almost 3 weeks ago. Have fun!

Why pre-1982 pennies?

M&M tubes? Do M&M's come in tubes? DS is nuts for squashed pennies, so I need to check into this!

BTW, where can I find out where to find machines at DW?

Thanks for the inspiring suggestion!

Why pre-1982 pennies?

I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I can answer this question. :rotfl: DS is dedicated penny squasher!

Some time in 1982, the composition of the penny changed so that it is now no longer primarily copper. If you squash a newer penny in the machines, you'll find that it's mostly zinc with a copper coating, so you get a multi-colored, streaked penny as a result. Before 1982, pennies were close to 100% copper.

Strange knowledge to have. :)

Mini M&Ms come in a tube that is perfect for keeping a stack of the quarter/penny trio.

Google is your friend ... "pressed pennies list wdw" brings up this:

Thanks! I tried pennycollector.com, but that site simply said that there are too many too list and the list changes too frequently. I'm happy to have a list as a starting point!

You can probably press a Canadian penny but since you are paying for the pressing with the quarters I would say US quarters only. I don't know anywhere at WDW that takes Canadian currency.

you can always ask for a list at any guest relations. I do this on every trip, because they do change so often I find. :thumbsup2

Did you try Walgreens, Rite Aid or CVS? I haven't really looked for them yet, but sometimes the drugstores carry different/wider variety of candy than you can typically find at Target/Walmart type stores. The other place that I was thinking about checking is Party City-sometimes the party stores carry little things like that.

The smaller M&M tubes hold $12 in quarters, I do believe. They work very well to hold quarters for laundry.

I have seen them at dollar general, wal-greens, wal-mart, Kmart, rite aid and food lion. Most had just the smaller ones but dollar general had both sizes.

We got the larger size at Toys R Us and the regular size at Wal Mart or the gas station.

We can't wait to add to our collection. We started collecting last time and didn't really have a plan- which would explain why we have 3 of the SAME stitch. This time, we have a better idea.

Anyone know if they have a pressed quarter book? We have the pressed penny one, just nowhere to put the quarters.

We got a book back in 2006 in our resort gift shop. It is pretty small 4X6 and folds out and has clear slots for 36 pennies and 6 quarters. It is blue and has Mickey/Minnie picture on it.

I am so glad to learn about the 1982 pennies! :banana:I couldn't figure out why some of our look better than others. I will have my Dad (he works at a bank) on the lookout for us some before our trip in December (my DH loves to find us a penny from everywhere we go).

I got them at CVS but when I was at Bed, Bath, and Beyond last week, they had a big MM with a ton of the large ones. The only reason I would have gotten them there over CVS is because they had a bigger variety of colors. They were right by the checkouts...for both stores.

Be careful with your tubes at WDW! My daughter was getting hers pressed at the gift shop where the fairy's are at MK. I grabbed the penny press book to buy, took it to the counter to pay...DD comes up behind me and I ask her where her tube is. She runs back to the machine and it is already gone!!!! The store checked their lost and found, then I called the WDW lost and found and no one turned it in. Someone grabbed it in probably 30 seconds. I was devestated because it was very early and we'd filled the tube to the top before we left that day! :( But we had some very very magical experiences that day which TOTALLY made up for it. :)

The easiest way I can explain it, is that you put a penny and 2 quarters in a machine, select a design and then turn the crank. The penny is flattened out and whatever design you selected is on your flattened penny. You can also do quarters too I guess (haven't ever seen quarters - didn't know they existed till I read it here!) There are pressed penny machines everywhere - my kids like to get them at our local zoo!
A pp gave a link to the list I plan to use for my kids to figure out what pennies they want.
HTH!

The book I got for DS (through ebay for Christmas last year) was a 4 parks 1 world and held pennies and quarters.

There are also entire books on collecting the pressed pennies. DS likes to collect them, but we saw several groups of men who were walking around with the latest lists and books discussing their strategy and being upset at the addition of the quarters!

Thanks for posting google info on the pressed pennies locations. I never knew you could get a list at Guest Services - that'll be my first stop on my next trip. :cool1:

Also you might want to check out the DISigns boards. The ladies over there make adorable covers for the tubes.

Just a heads up if you're traveling by air: went to the World with my grandkids in December and premade up the M&M tubes with their quarters and pennies. Packed the tubes in my carry-on since I new they'd want to start their penny search as soon as we hit the parks. Once my bag went through x-ray, security asked if they could look through my bag. I said sure wondering what the heck they thought they had found. Naturally it was the pressed penny tubes that looked like two long tubes of metal to the screener. After opening one up and listening to my explanation the guy said "pressed penny tubes, huh? You learn something new every day. Have a nice trip!" :rotfl:

Funny that everyone is saying pre-1982 pennies. My DDs only want bright shiny pennies for pressing and we haven't had any problems in the past.
Just my two cents!!

I heard to use pre 1982 before we ever started doing them so that's what I have always used. According to other people, there is zinc (I think! ;)) in the pennies after 1982 that can sometimes leave a streak in them when they are squashed! Never actually seen it, but that is what I have read.
