That is what a group is about. Pooling your talent/resources/abilities to give a gift to all Fish Extender Participants. Splitting the delivery is a good idea, as it cuts down on leg work that everyone must do running all over the ship.

We had a group of 12. We each put in the same amount and ordered enough gifts for all the participants and a few extras for the podcast team. I tried to split up the deliveries according to each person's room location so they didn't have to go all over the ship. Each person delivered to about 8 rooms. Easy peasy.

Thanks- that's a great explanation- and sounds like fun.
(I'll go back to waiting mode now.... watching for the FE 101 Primer!)

I think (depending upon agreement and what we order) our group is full!!

Again, depending upon what we order, we might open it again, but I don't know yet!!

Can I join someone's group? I really don't care what group it is, but I had a heck of a time making and delivering all of my FE's

If we all chip in, we can hire someone to come on the cruise, stay in a Cat 12 (or 11 with discount and a ship-board credit) and have them do nothing but hand out FE gifts for all of us, so we can enjoy the cruise!!

Anyone game!

If we have 200 rooms and each room pays $8.00 we can pay for the hired help!

200 x $8.00 = $1600.00

:woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:

Or we can take all our stuff there and go "trick or treating" to that room when we have time!

No way!!! I told that idea to AskTracy as I passed her in the hallway after spending an hour delivering FE gifts. Someone has had too much wine and been spreading my idea around. :rotfl2:

I think an international (EU even) group would be great! Too bad I'm domestic!

I know some groups are forming now, but there isn't a rush. There is still 18 months (from tomorrow) before we sail.

A group should 'close' once it is full. In other words, it should be based on number of people in a group, not over a certain time period.

It is my opinion that any more than a dozen participants may get to be too many. You should find the number of people that you feel works best for you. There were a couple of groups of two or three on PCC 1.0, and they worked smashingly.

Thanks Todd, I was getting a bit panicky - all these groups and I thought I may 'miss the boat' as it were :rotfl:

Hopefully some more foreigners will sign up........

Bargain - I'm in

Actually if someone wants to pay for my room I could almost give up a day delivering - hmmmmm

If you're in a group unless you walk round all the decks you wouldn't see all the rooms - this is not a bad thing though as there were LOTS :faint: - good exercise though :thumbsup2

No way that i'm going to do this by myself.

I was hoping to do an international group, anyone wanna come in? If not I hope it won't be too late to join a group? How far in advance did the group 'close'? I don't wanna leave it too late :confused3
This sounds great.
If there are this time more international travelers (otherwise it's a group of 2)....

http://i516.photobucket.com/albums/u327/scarlett873/rickloridoor.jpg

Thanks Brandie! I hope you don't mind, I saved a copy for us!

Do you think if I offer Lori a bribe, she would make me a name magnet?

I mean, she's already got the template for it for herself.
I would need Door Magnet 101 classes in order to make them. I'm pretty clueless.

I would be happy to share any of mine with you! Although I think from looking at some of the door pictures I "NEED" to shop around for some more!:rotfl2:

And as far as delivery goes, we took one deck at a time and delivered on our way to dinner, or the pool, or bingo, etc. so it wasn't really that bad to deliver to every cabin that had signed up!

Okay - I've been bad. I totally have been bypassing most of the boards due to being busy.

Who's all in my Disneyland Group? PM me so I can make an official list. Otherwise I've got over 15 or more pages of FE thread to catch up on....

:scared1::scared1::scared1:

Okay - I'm editing to say I'm not as bad as I thought, but still bad.

I've only got two other sets of folks committed to our group, Klam Chowder and Disney Enabler/Merry Mouseketeer.

There has to be more West Coasters or simply just Disneyland lovers out there to represent!!!

Oh I am so confused...

Sorry...

I read some of these pages...but not all...(sorry for that, too)

Please explain Fish Extenders? And Groups?

Seems like a group forms itself and then delivers gifts to the other people in their group? Individually? Or does one "group" deliver gifts to everyone on the cruise and just do it as a group?

What sort of things do we put in a gift? Can anyone lead a group? Can I join a group? Can I join more than one group?

Sorry...I have never been on a Disney cruise...so I am clueless!!!! I feel like I am drinking from a fire hydrant with all of the information out there. I think I need to buy a cruise book.

How are groups being set up? by area?

A group can be set up however it wants to be.

There is a group being set up by Canadians. I would imagine the group's gift would have a Canadian theme/flare to it.

Same thing with the Non-North American group. :goodvibes

Nancy is spearheading a Disneyland Fan group.

Jen and Shelly each are leading groups of random DIS'ers.

So basically, whatever you want.

I know there are some people that have expressed interest in having a group or joining a group. Maybe I'll start a group FE thread? If nothing else it might be easier for people that want to get in on a group to find....:scratchin

Possibly. However, it would really only matter to the group who was in it, right?

A group can be set up however it wants to be.

There is a group being set up by Canadians. I would imagine the group's gift would have a Canadian theme/flare to it.

Same thing with the Non-North American group. :goodvibes

Nancy is spearheading a Disneyland Fan group.

Jen and Shelly each are leading groups of random DIS'ers.

So basically, whatever you want.

I know there are some people that have expressed interest in having a group or joining a group. Maybe I'll start a group FE thread? If nothing else it might be easier for people that want to get in on a group to find....:scratchin

DH and I are in New England so if anyone is doing that area or just wants to add us to their group Jen....Shelly ;)

Groups get together and pool resources to make and distribute gifts to the entire FE Gift participant list. Being a group means you can split all the tasks. You can split up playing "deliveryman", too - which is the biggest time saver!

The Fish Extender
What is a Fish Extender? Where did it come from? What does it mean to me? What if I am terrified of fishes? All these questions and more answered in this episode of SOAP. :happytv:

Background
A fish extender is a “secret Santa” of sorts. The idea is that a group of DISers exchange gifts during a cruise. The first Fish Extender Exchange is said to have been started during a Panama Canal repositioning cruise. It is called a “Fish Extender” because outside of every stateroom there is a fish mounted on the wall. It was put there by DCL as a way to deliver notes without entering your room. Now DISers use it to hang their Fish Extenders. The actual extender is like increasing the size of your mailbox, if you will.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j24/jeanigor/MyFish.jpg

The idea behind fish extenders is: Share some magic with your fellow DISers. Also known as, its better to give that to receive.

Tell Me More
Fish Extenders have all sorts of looks to them, depending on the cruisers tastes, size of family, specific event, and character.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j24/jeanigor/100_0406.jpg
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j24/jeanigor/DSC00004-1.jpg
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j24/jeanigor/0810100001.jpg
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j24/jeanigor/0808022.jpg
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j24/jeanigor/tigger.jpg

Important Details
Requirements for your Fish Extender are:
•you are able to hang it from the Fish in the hallway (size requirements and zip ties later)
•it has a pocket or pouch to hold the gifts you will receive
That’s it. Breathe. Relax.

Where Do I Get a Fish Extender?
Some folks make their own Fish Extenders.
Some buy Fish Extenders from places like e-bay.
Others find creative things to use as Fish Extenders.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j24/jeanigor/4467_174524620315_638730315_6795262.jpg

Here are some instructions for sewing your own 'traditional' Fish Extender: Sew it yourself Fish Extender (http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=18177280&postcount=27).
Here are some instructions for people that don't/can't sew so well: No-sew Fish Extender (http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=30302583&postcount=609)

Specifications
The wall that the fish extender is hung on is roughly 8” wide. If you make your extender much wider, it will stick out into the hallway and/or hit your stateroom door.
The fish to hang your extender from is about 5’3” off the floor. When deciding upon a length for your extender, be sure you keep in mind that you will hang it from the fish, which will add overall length to your extender.

What’s With This Zip Tie Business
A zip tie (or cable tie) is a handy piece of equipment to secure your fish extender. We don’t want any fish extender nappings. Let’s face it, even on a Disney Cruise; there are people out there that have deviousness running in their veins. The zip tie helps to deter this. This is an explanation from a fellow DISer:
“If you look at the ribbon on any fish extender (that is what you place over the fish) that is how the "extender" hangs on the fish. It is very easy to just remove the extender by just un-hooking it from the fish. So, you take your zip tie and cinch it around both of the ribbons that are hanging from the fish on both sides... and you cinch the zip tie so that the two ribbons squeeze around the fish making it impossible to remove the extender.”
“The zip-tie goes around the ribbon or string that attaches to the fish... and you place it just under the fish... it actually scoots itself up to the fish as you tighten it... the trick is to leave it NOT so tight so that you can get your scissors or nail clippers thru it when you are ready to take it down.”

Think about it like a Club except instead of securing your cars steering wheel, it holds the strap your fish extender hangs from securely to the fish.

The Magic of Fish Extender Gifts
So what do people put in the Fish Extenders? How often do you deliver gifts? What about kids?
People give all sorts of stuff. Here are some pics of Fish Extender bootie.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j24/jeanigor/10-30-2007-174.jpg http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j24/jeanigor/IMG_0444.jpg
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j24/jeanigor/053008_0310.jpg

Gifts can be regional in theme.
Gifts can be Disney related.
Gifts can be event specific.
Gifts can represent you.
Gifts can be almost anything.

Delivering your gifts can be a daunting task. The other people that signed up for the Fish Extender exchange will be all over the ship. Walking the ship isn’t too very tough. Walking the ship, carrying your gifts, trying to find specific staterooms—that’s a different story.

Gifts are delivered throughout the day and night, totally dependent upon your schedule. It did seem that there were a lot of deliveries on the first full day aboard the ship.

Some instances a gift is given to each individual. Sometimes it is given to the entire the cabin. Quite often children get special gifts just for them. If your cabin has a roommate situation, where you both are participating in the Fish Extender Exchange, but do not reside together in real life, please state that when you sign up. Each person would then be listed and each person would receive gifts of their own.

Some important things to remember about gifts:
•Some people have food allergies. (i.e. cinnamon, peanuts, coconut, etc.). If you do, please mention that when you sign up for the Fish Extender list.
•Be aware of how much space will be needed to transport your gifts to the ship (and then home again). I ended up shipping a box (15”x15”x15”) full of FE Stuff home.

Groups
Does the thought of purchasing, assembling, transporting and delivering a massive amount of Fish Extender gifts worry or frighten you? Joining a group may be just the solution to your concerns.

A Fish Extender Group is a group of DISers that pool their resources (money, time, creativity) toward a fish extender gift.

Groups do not need any formal association. They can be random DISers that want to join a group. They can be people from a certain state or country. They can be from a demographic (Redheads, Firemen, Teachers, etc.)

One person should act as a group leader, collecting and distributing input from the rest of the group. It is a good idea to e-mail everyone in the group about the group’s gift.

Once a group’s gift is decided upon, the total cost (don’t forget shipping) is divided between the members of the group.
Onboard, it would be easiest to divide up the total number of staterooms participating in the fish extender exchange between members of the group. For example, if there were 180 staterooms participating, and 12 members in your group, each person would deliver 15 gifts.

Miscelaneous
Signing up for the Fish Extender on your cruise should be relatively easy. Whomever is going to head up the task should be able to keep track of the changes throughout the thread and keep record of them, updating the list as necessary.
From time to time, peoples cabin number changes. If this happens to you, please post a note on the thread so the list can be updated. One of the first few posts of the thread should contain the list of participants, their cabin number, number of adults, number (and age) of children, allergies, and special notes.

If for some reason you cabin number changes close to the sail date, or you upgrade your cabin at the port, that information needs to be shared with the rest of the Fish Extender group. The easiest way to do this is to have an update list posted. Someone who signed up for the Fish Extender Exchange should volunteer to do this.
Now here are a few tips:
1) If you can ship your gifts ahead of time, do it - saves so much room in your luggage. Make sure you allow enough time for your package to arrive prior to the start of the cruise. You don't want to get to the ship and discover that your package did not make it to meet you.
2) Be sure you have room in your luggage for the goodies you will receive. I thought I would have so much room in my suitcase since I had given away the goodies I brought; however, I had just as much to take home!
3) If you are talented and can make your gifts - they are so appreciated. All gifts are awesome, and homemade ones are like icing on the cake! ((or the meringue on the pie!!)
4) Deliver your gifts a floor at a time - maybe one floor a day.
5) Plan your delivery - either map them or organize by number.
6) Trip personalized gifts are awesome - some of the coolest gifts were items that were personalized with our cruise dates or motto (pens, notepads, etc)
7) Fasten your Fish Extender to the fish with a zip tie - there was a report of a near Fish Extender napping on our cruise thread - I think personalizing the Fish Extender helps, too.
8) Make delivering the gifts a family affair. At one point I could hear a cute family whispering outside my door as they had the kids put the goodies in the Fish Extender.

Remember, when you do a Fish Extender you will be the envy of many on the ship! I was stopped a couple of times asking how we got one of those and how could they participate! Of course, those folks have now been informed of the Disboards!

Tell Me More
Fish Extenders have all sorts of looks to them, depending on the cruisers tastes, size of family, specific event, and character.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j24/jeanigor/100_0406.jpg
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j24/jeanigor/DSC00004-1.jpg

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j24/jeanigor/0808022.jpg
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j24/jeanigor/tigger.jpg

Thanks for the great post! Even as an experienced Dis' Cruiser, I didn't know about the zip ties. This would be great information to share on a constant running post. ;)

Unfortunately, I am not going on a Disney cruise anytime soon, but I know I will one day. There is no doubt in my mind. I have seen the FE mentioned many times and always wondered.... What a wonderful idea!!! Just goes to show why I love Disney and how wonderful Disney fans are. I can't wait to participate in this one day.

The Fish Extender sign up for PCC 1.0 was started less than 9 months prior. People continued to sign up until the week beforehand.

Do you think we are jumping on it too fast? :confused3

It will be over a year from now that we will really know how many gifts we need, right? :confused3

I think right now is a good time to get to know each other, and maybe start thinking about your Fish Extender & ideas for a gift.

I will admit that I am a bit of a procrastinator. I didn't finish my Fish Extender until the night before I flew down to Florida. It was sitting on my kitchen counter for the few hours I slept that night, drying. It was the last thing I packed into my suitcase.

We won't know the exact number of staterooms that sign up for it until much closer to the cruise. Setting a sign up deadline can be controversial. On one hand, you need to know how many gifts to prepare and bring. Yet on the other, you would like everyone to have a chance to participate.

For the exact number of rooms compared to the actual number of gift we brought, I would have to defer to our group leader.

We had 80 rooms sign up for 1.0. We added enough for the podcast crew and about 10 extra.:teacher:

I was the one who originally asked agoofymon about a Canadian group!! So far we are 4, we will see who else is interested and decide on a suitable gift!! Of course we do have a lot of time to figure that out!!!

Hi there. Is the Canadian Group all filled up??? I will have to talk to my husband about the FE thing yet but a group sounds like the way to go from what I have been reading. Would there be room for 2 more. Don't know much about it. We have never even been on a cruise before. But the whole idea sure does sound like fun :)

What do people prefer for F.E. gifts?

Something consumable that won't need to be packed and brought home?

Or a "souvenir" that will need suitcase space and will need to be packed away or displayed or dusted once you get home?

Great timing!! I was just going to post some pics of the Fish Extender Gifts we received during PCC 1.0.

And there was so much stuff I had to move into the media room. It outgrew the photography studio/spare bath very quickly....

(Sorry if you gave candy...it may have been consumed by DP or myself prior to taking the pics...)

Back to my question - let's here from more people.

Consumables or packables?

That's OK, I am glad it is in use! I just spent 5 minutes looking at the photo trying to find my gift before I read this. I found that amusing. Oh by the by Todd, even though I already knew all about FE's I throughly enjoyed reading your primer, and will probably read it again! (I reread very few things, so it has to be uber awesome!)

I had some post-it notepads made up with "First Podcast Cruise" on the lime green pads... and made individual covers for them.

Hi everyone. This is my first cruise, so I'm new to all of this. I like the idea of the fish extender and I think I would like to be in on it. My DD and DGD will be with me, so I think I will get them to help out on it. Keep us Posted.

So I had a thought.. you know how Kevin has been taunting us non cruisers with the extra gift baskets... What if we made like 3 extra Fish extender packs up and pulled names of 3 non cruisers who had signed up before hand and we mailed them a Fish Extender package from CC or port when we got back?!? Would everyone be willing to make a few extras for our DIS friends who cannot be with us?

I think that's a great idea.

•In the top right there is a box (most likely its lavender colored) click on the underlined words Private Messages.

•Over on the left hand side of the screen there is a list of choices. Click on Send New Message

•In the box labeled Recipients, type the board name of whomever you want to send your message to. Currently you may send your message to up to 5 people at once. I believe the system will automatically narrow down your recipient the more you type.

•Type your message and subject, hit submit. And violà, you're done.:):)

I bought a green Christmas Print for the extender, then bought some Disney licensed material for the pockets, with Mickey and the gang...lots of red. I'm going to use a bright yellow binding to hold it all together. Then, I bought some sew on Disney patches that I'm going to decorate it with. I figure that I can use it for more that just the cruise...during Christmas, I can hang it and put Christmas Cards in it.

Cool...can't wait to see it

If I were to make another FE, my DP would strangle me. It was a serious point of contention in the crafting half of the dining room. Perhaps the Disney Store Christmas Card holder would work. Or I can re-use the one from 1.0.....or maybe ....... :scratchin:scratchin:scratchin:scratchin

Or maybe, if you can convince Daddy to get me my sewing machine I would make you one.... with sparkly fabric.... and an embroidered tiara on top......

We're almost finished with ours. DH and I had a lot of fun designing it, and Todd, your primer was a great help! Now, to figure out a creative idea to use to hang it from the fish? :scratchin How thick is the area between the wall and the fish? Does the rope/string we use have to be thin? This will be our first cruise, so I have absolutely no experience with this. :confused3

Think of an outdoor clothes line. Nothing thicker than that.

Hi all. I posted awhile back about needing a group to join for my hubby and myself. I asked about the Canadian group but have not heard anything . Is there any openings in any other groups?:)
