I need the help of all of you experienced runners and walkers!

I'm supposed to run a half marathon on Sunday. My training hasn't been great, due to a WDW trip and also some IT band/knee pain. I've had IT band/knee issues before, so I do have a set of exercises that I do to help it. I've been doing them faithfully and it's getting better, but I don't know if it will be enough for a half marathon by Sunday.

I'm trying to decide if I should attempt the race. On one hand, if my knee really starts to hurt, I don't know if I'll be able to finish the race. On the other hand, I won't know for sure unless I give it a try. :confused3

I guess I'm having such a hard time with this because I hate to sign up for something and then not follow through with it. However, I don't want to make a stupid decision and make my knee worse.

So, what would you do?

TIA! :goodvibes

I am no expert and I didn't stay in a Holiday Inn last night, so take this with shaker of salt...

I would attempt it, but only if I had completed 80% of my training and wasn't now, nor had I experienced problems with the IT in the last week. And even then, I would walk at the first sign of problems and drop out if necessary. Afterall, DLF>DNF>>DNS

I don't like to choose either. I had shoulder surgery last fall and was unable to participate in a race I had paid for and couldn't particpate in any races for several months. It was tough decision, but I decided it was just temporary and there would be more races if I only took care of myself. So there you have it, I am just about zero help! Good luck! :tinker:

Julie, I don't think you would even be asking if you didn't think it probably wasn't a good idea. You will probably injury yourself worse if you try to run a half marathon when you already have a knee and ITBand injury. Walking the race is an option but I don't know how you feel about that.

I did damage to my Achillies tendon that is probably never going to heal completely by racing hurt.

Hi Julie,
My 2 cents are that you probably should not risk it for 1 race and maybe compromise yourself for a very long time or forever and never be able to do another race- I would wait it out.

I am not someone who like to wait either- no pain ,no gain just isn't true anymore.

Good to see you on here again,
Linda

Thanks for the help, everyone!

I'm leaning toward either walking the whole thing or just cheering people on.

My neighbor is running it and it's her first half marathon. I was the one who encouraged her to do it, so I really wanted to be able to run it with her. At least I can cheer her on when she nears the finish line. If she has a good experience, maybe I can even talk her into the Disney marathon at some point down the road. :cool1:
