I arrived at the Disneyland Resort in California on Sunday morning, ready to spend 7 nights here. I checked into the Grand Californian Hotel, but my room wasn’t ready yet (it was ready at 3pm). The GCH is beautiful, and I’m glad I added on points here. The construction of the new wing is coming along.

I spent the morning wandering around. I went to Disneyland and picked up my annual pass. I took the train around Disneyland Park and rode the monorail. I didn’t do any attractions today – I just explored Disneyland Park and Disney’s California Adventure, Downtown Disney and the hotels.

The best thing about DLR is that everywhere I want to go is just a short walk away. I don’t need to wait for a bus or a boat. I walk out of one door of the GCH and I’m in DTD; I walk out another and I’m in DCA.

I had lunch at Wine Country Trattoria with some folks from MousePlanet and DISBoards.

I walked over to the model rooms for Disney’s Villas at the Grand California. It was nice to see them in person. The rooms look great!

Tonight, I’m having dinner at the Napa Rose – the best restaurant on property.

Tomorrow, I’m going to hit Disneyland!

I didn’t take too many pictures today, but I’ll post the few that I did take.

Keep it coming Mike!!! I have only been to Disnyland once when I was in the Marines out there but wondering what the appeal to DL is over WDW? I could see if I lived on the West Coast area or maybe spending a few days there... I'm excited to see Mike's report because I'm sure his report will get me to take a trip out there...would be cool to go and bring the kids to MCRD in a few years if we get out there I guess!

Make sure you see Fantasmic while you are there. It is so much better at DL than WDW. Is the Aladdin show still running in Cal Adv? I love that show.

What are they putting in where Libby Lu used to be? I see it is barricaded for construction in your photo.

Thanks Mike for sharing... can't wait for the rest throughout your stay. I too hope your wife is doing better. And oh yeah, have to disagree with you though on your original post... you said you didn't do any attractions today, yet you rode the train and the monorail... both are attractions. ;) Can't wait though til you give us your opinions on the real attractions, and the various photos you'll post. Wish I were there right now myself. Have FUN!!

Sadly, Fantasmic is not scheduled for this week, so I'll miss it. That's one of the disadvantages of not visiting DLR during the summer or other peak period.

The Aladdin musical is still running in DCA.

For the dinner at Napa Rose, I asked to sit at the Chef's table so I kept busy watching them prepare all the meals. Wow, is all I can say. Several of the chefs spoke to me during brief breaks in preparing the food.

I had the asparagus-encrusted Halibut as the main course. It was delicious.

Since DL is open until midnight, I'll be heading over there to catch the fireworks.

Club Libby Lu's space is being remodeled into "Disney365" which will provide makeovers to preteens. Instead of princesses like Bibbidi-Bobbidi Boutique, it will be Hannah Montana, and the like.

I caught the "Remember...Dreams Come True" fireworks last night. I've never seen it before. It was interesting how they incorporated music and spoken words from many attractions and some interesting affects I've not seen at WDW. Definitely worth it.

I was standing in front of Sleeping Beauty's Castle at 8:39 pm PT when I felt the 4.7 earthquake that hit. The whole ground wobbled like a big truck was driving over a bridge you are standing on. I've not felt one since I moved away from California, so it brought back memories! Oh well, I guess I'm back home.

I'm headed out this morning to hit Nemo's subs, the Matterhorn, Indiana Jones and Space Mountain!

I guess I shouldn't forget to take my camera with me...

WOW DVC Mike !!! 4.7 quake would be more than enough to rattle my nerves :scared1:

I'm guessing your take may have been more like 'oh that little thing' ?

Enjoying your TR as always & photos - great view from your room :thumbsup2

Looking forward to future updates, hopefully any further thrills/chills/excitement during your trip will be provided strictly by Disney & not Mother Earth !! :goodvibes

Hope your wife is feeling better too :-)

That really is an amazing fireworks show. The best one ever, IMO. I'm sad that it will be replaced this summer since I can't see it live again before it's gone, but I have it on video, and the individual soundtrack released on the 50th anniversary CD helps bring back the fun memories. Glad you got to experience it Mike.

Ahh the memories! I can handle an earthquake so much better than a tornado. Living here in the midwest now, I still freak out about tornados...but earthquakes, ahh Southern California. My local friends say I'm strange, but growing up in So Cal, they were just such a part of life!

It brings tears to my eyes seeing all the pics, I want to go back sooo bad! After 10+ trips to WDW, I had my first trip to DL in January of this year - and I absolutely LOVED IT! Loved it so much I bought an annual pass!

Everything is so similar to WDW yet different. It's on a smaller scale than WDW. There's beautiful landscaping, the walkways twist and turn and you can get lost (sounds funny, I know, but you can!) I loved the differences in the rides that are the same as WDW, and I liked all the rides they have that are different than WDW.

Seeing the light above the fire house in Walt's apartment brought tears to my eyes. There's a definite feeling being in DL that you don't get in WDW.

I liked the close proximity of everything, and being able to walk everywhere. It was a great surprise, as I was expecting a little more of a walk. I liked that my feet weren't tired every night like in WDW. And I also loved the fireworks! I thought they were better than any show at Magic Kingdom. I'm sorry you missed Fantasmic. It was great being so close to the show, sitting on the river. And the boat - oh my gosh! Since you own there now I'm sure you'll see it soon. I didn't get to see the parades when I was there. They were working on Main Street (that's why we got to see Fantasmic and Fireworks each night).

Storybookland was my top favorite ride. I also liked Indiana Jones. Space Mountain about gave me a migraine, lol! And DCA had some great tours of how they make sourdough bread and corn tortillas. They also have a building you can walk through that shows how they came up with the ideas for some of the rides like Toy Story Mania, and they also show the new rides and water shows they're developing for future years. It was very interesting!

Have a terrific time! I can't wait to hear more about your trip and your opinions (and pictures) of everything!

I walked over to Disneyland Park early this morning and was lucky to get right up to the rope at the end of Main Street. When the rope dropped, I headed straight for the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage. I was the 4th person in line and got right on the first sub.

I haven’t been on this since I was on the old submarine voyage when I was a kid. All I can say is “great job!” The imagineers took the technology they developed for the Seas with Nemo at Epcot, combined it with the submarine ride and added a great story. It really beats the clamshell ride at Epcot. Highly recommended.

I then headed straight to the Matterhorn, and since there was only a 5 min wait, I rode it twice (once on each side). I then went to Space Mountain and rode it after a short wait.

I headed over to the Indiana Jones Adventure, but it was still closed since the earthquake last night. So I headed over and rode Big Thunder Mountain followed by Splash Mountain.

I walked around a bit until my lunch reservation at Blue Bayou. I got seated at a table right against the water, so it was relaxing watching the boats drift by and listening to the banjo music. I had the Monte Cristo sandwich, which was not spectacular but fine. I’m glad I had priority seating as they were booked up the entire day.

I then grabbed a Fastpass for Indiana Jones, since it had re-opened, and listened to some different wisecracks and jokes on the Jungle Cruise before buying a Dole Whip and sitting in front of Sleeping Beauty’s castle.

I then did Indy and finally walked back to the room since the crowds were picking up.

All in all, a very nice day so far! The weather is great too.

Enough of me blathering, I’ll post some pictures…

Thanks for the great TR! Makes me excited for our trip on 6/10. Keep an eye out for the kitty that lives at Whitewater Snacks. She is a cutie! I wish you had live streaming video, we could hear the people screaming on the TOT with the view that you have . . . :lmao:

Oh, I hear screaming from my balcony. I can't tell if it's from Grizzly River Run or the ToT.

Love the pictures!! I have a special spot in my heart for DL. It was the first park I went to in 1974, first park we took our kids to, and our DD got engaged in front of the castle last December. :goodvibes

We toured the VGC when we were there in December and it was about all I could do to sell some of our current points to add on there!! It is gorgeous inside! :lovestruc

Thanks for the great TR!

Welcome to Southern California. So glad the weather has been wonderful for you. Will you still be here on Saturday night? If you like swing/jive music, take some time to listen to the band and watch the dancers in Disneyland. That's where you'll find us:)

Have you given any thought about the special present you are bringing home to your wife?

Enjoying your trip report (as usual):goodvibes. I love the Blue Bayou and the tables by the water, sorry that your Monti Cristo was just OK - that's what I've ordered both times I've been to Blue Bayou. I actually think that Pirates in DL is a better ride since they have that whole firefly/man rockin on the porch in the beginning - I can hear the crickets now. Have a wonderful vacation in sunny CA.

Sounds like a great day at Disneyland! Just to clarify, the technology for Nemo was developed for Disneyland's Submarine ride first. It was adapted for the Seas at Epcot afterwards. The Seas opened first because it was a simpler ride than the subs. Same with Midway Mania. It was developed for Paradise Pier and then added to the Studios.

Is splash or big thunder any differn't from the one's at WDW? I really enjoyed the pictures. Hope your having fun.

Both are somewhat different than at WDW.

Splash: At DL is single row seating, vs. rows double seating. At DL the logs accomodate up to 7 in a single row, at WDW it's 4 rows of 2. The interiors at DL are darker, whereas when they built WDW's version they added more lighting and defined the story a little bit more. DL's is in Critter Country, WDW's is in Frontierland. DL's colors are a bit more cartoony, WDW's are a bit more subdued to try and fit in with the southwestern aspect of Frontierland. When designing it for DL, it was inhabited by all but 2 or 3 of the original characters from the old "America Sings" (attraction designed to replace COP when it moved east from DL to WDW). When they built the WDW version, they had to recreate the critters that inhabit the attraction, and consequently didn't build quite as many. (And then the one they built for Japan is different still, being more cartoony, and with it's own restaurant nearby). Splash was DL's 4th mountain and WDW's 3rd in their respective mountain ranges.

Big Thunder: At DL both the placement of the attraction and the orientation of the tracks is opposite to WDW as related to the Rivers of America. As such, it does not go out over the River at DL like it does at WDW. The acreage of the actual attraction is less at DL too, given the more compact nature of the park vs. the MK. At the MK the train runs along through the water logged town, but not so at DL. The town at the end of the attraction at DL is the original Rainbow Ridge town that was found in the old Mine Train through Rainbow Caverns ride that predated BTMRR that Walt loved so much. At DL you can walk around BTMRR and leave Frontierland and go through the pass into Fantasyland - at WDW, it's at the end of the path there in Frontierland, the outer edge of the land, if you will. The queues are also different. At WDW you go up into the structure to go down to the loading platform and enter the bat caves straightaway from inside the queue building. At DL you go down from the main entrance, wrap around the building and then climb up into the station platform loading area before then entering the mountain and the bat cave. Subtle differences, but differences just the same. Both mountains are based on real parts of the country (at least in design qualities and the overall look of the attractions, not based on actual mountains or anything like that) - but they are not from the same places. WDW's is based on Monument Valley in UT, and DL's is based on the more intimate Bryce Canyon. BTMRR was originally designed to be a part of the Western River Expedition expansion of Frontierland at WDW but was shelved there - so it was actually approved and built for DL and opened 2 years earlier than the one that was ultimately approved for WDW. Big Thunder was DL's 3rd mountain, and WDW's 2nd in their respective mountain ranges.

Is splash or big thunder any differn't from the one's at WDW? I really enjoyed the pictures. Hope your having fun.

Big Thunder is the reverse of WDW's version, but very similar. Splash is a bit different, with smaller logs where the seats are in a single line. It also moves quicker through the scenes and doesn't tell a story as well as the WDW version. However, it's the original Splash, so it is our favorite.

I had dinner at Ralph Brennan's Jazz Cafe in DTD. It was OK; just OK. The Pasta Jambalaya was good, but not fantastic.

I asked for an outside table on the patio, so I got a nice view of DTD and all the people walking by. That made it worth it to me.

Since I'll probably spend most of Saturday with my family and I fly home on Sunday, that still leaves me 4 more days at DLR. That's plenty of time to just enjoy the parks.

I'm very much enjoying your TR- even though I was just there on Friday! I'm sorry you'll miss Fantasmic. It's normally up and running at this time of year, but it's down I believe due to the new dragon, eels, and croc that are being installed. Fantasmic is already much better at DL- can't wait to see the new creatures for Fantasmic June 12 when it returns!

Your photos are beautiful- and do I love that theme park view at GCH! The other night we were waiting for the tram at the end of the evening, and my DD noticed -for the first time ever- a father and son standing on their GCH balcony, watching the DTD crowds. She was amazed that people could stay there. I guess she never noticed anyone out there before! (She's only stayed at DLH.) What a nice way to unwind and relax at the end of the night- watch the crowds from your balcony, instead of getting herded onto a tram. :rotfl:

You've certainly come at a great weather time! I look forward to tomorrow's TR!

I love your trip report. We just planned a trip there for July--very quick notice for me since I'm used to the 11 months out for my DVC. Anyway, how did you get from the airport to your hotel? That's the last thing I have left to book. It will be my brother, and my two children and me, and I was leaning towards a car service. I really don't want to rent a car since my brother and I don't know the area. I think it might be too stressful to try to drive. Anyway, please let me know what you did for transportation. Thanks!

The Mansion is my all-time favorite attraction, and New Orleans Square my all-time favorite land. Together they make such a great combo! And the facade of this mansion just screams beauty and charm. Walt knew what he was doing when he said they'd keep up the outside and let the ghosts take care of the inside... :) Thanks for this lovely visual.

I went over to Disneyland Park early for the "Magic Morning". Only Fantasyland and Tommorrowland are open, and only a few rides, so
it's not as nice as Extra Magic Hours at WDW. I rode the Matterhorn Bobsleds and Mr Toad's Wild Ride.

When Frontierland opened up, I headed over to the River Belle Terrace and had breakfast. Walt used to eat breakfast here. While the food is nothing special, it has a great view!

Thanks!

When we used to live a couple of miles from DL, we used to use the Airport Bus from the DL Hotel all of the time! I always felt that the fares were pretty reasonable.

I forgot, is it okay to post a link???

Mike, thank you. You brought back some wonderful memories for me. We were there three nights in 05 after our West Coast DCL cruise.

There were plenty of pleasant surprises when compared to WDW. (Weather, proximity of both parks, etc.).

Thank you for taking us along and sharing. You take some wonderful pictures.

I must have missed the part or pre-planning part of your trip - I hope your wife is feeling/doing much better.

Enjoy!!!

Ahh the memories! I can handle an earthquake so much better than a tornado. Living here in the midwest now, I still freak out about tornados...but earthquakes, ahh Southern California. My local friends say I'm strange, but growing up in So Cal, they were just such a part of life!

Midwestern gal here, and I'd much rather face a tornado! Chances are really low that it will touch down anywhere near me. But earthquakes affect so much larger areas!

Great pics, you've got me looking forward to my trip in August. Unfortunately we will only have two nights at CGH and one day in the parks (pre-cruise). The family and I loved DCA the one time we went to DLR in 2001.

Same here! We're going in August and staying at CGH for 4 nights with 3 full days in the parks. I haven't been to DL since early 1988 so I'm looking forward to the many many changes since then. I've been to DL-Paris much more recently though (just last year) and the pictures in this thread remind me much more of Paris than WDW. Paris is also great for being able to walk to everything and I loved that.

That may be true...but it's the watching and waiting that drives us absolutely nuts about the twisters. We've lived in two different midwestern cities and states now, and in both places we've had some serious scares close by - the first town had an experience wih a twsiter pacing directly to our town (sky turned green and everything) but then abruptly turned north just a mile out of town - and went on to destroy a good number of homes and businesses in the neighboring community. Ugh.

Quakes can be severe and widespread definitely, no underestimation of that on my part - but I think it's really all in what you grow up with. I rocked and rolled through so many over the years - slept right through a couple of really big ones too. Many times were my parents having to repair walls, and other damage from different ones. One time in high school (my school was on a hill in the midst of numerous surrounding hills) we watched the rolling of the hills as it came through and around the area, kind of like waves picking up boogie boarders at the beach. Sure they can be wicked dangerous, but they can be fun too! ;)

As an adult I remember being in one of the office buildings in Santa Ana near the John Wayne Airport and my boss (who had just transferred out from Michigan the year prior) was all excited when one came shaking the building. The rest of us were actually quite blase about it - but he was so giddy about his first earthquake...kind of like a kid in the candy store! Conversely, last year when that little tiny earthquake hit here in the midwest, my wife and I both woke up that morning knowing exactly what it was - smiling, remembering our years out west.

Then you come along and share your trip with us!! :wizard: You are letting me know just how much I am missing!!

Disneyland will probably be seeing an influx of visitors after your trip report Mike. It's that GOOD! I've never been, always thought WDW was the best, but now I think I need to pay a visit to relatives in California. That's my cover anyhow. Friends of ours are going in two weeks. Now I'm SUPER jealous.

Mickey's Fun Wheel is not your average ferris wheel. You slide in, out and around this ferris wheel, which is kind of scary at first.

I took advantage of the “sneak peek” at DCA. I went to the GCH entrance to DCA and was part of a small group (7 people) who were taken by a CM to ride Soarin’ over California at 9:15 AM. The CM said he thought this program would be replaced in the coming months by a hard ticketed event available only to those who book a package through Disney.

After the ride, I joined everyone else who was let in at 9:30 AM. When the rope dropped, I headed over to Toy Story Midway Mania, which I did three times. The CM on the Sneak Peek told me about some of the Easter eggs on TSM, and my score was doubled when I took advantage of them.

I then went and did the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, followed by It’s Tough to be a Bug and the Monster’s Inc. I thought that was a nice dark ride.

I had lunch with another DVC member (and forum member) at Storyteller’s Café at the GCH.

I then did Grizzly River Run twice and Muppet*Vision 3D before leaving to go visit my parents.

I had a quick dinner at In ‘N Out Burger, since they don’t have those in NC!

I took a lot less pictures today (I was having too much fun!)

Oh What great pictures.
I was there on Sunday, in the park, and I didn't feel a thing. I had to get out of line at Pirates when they shut it down. Didn't know why at the time. So we went on got on the Mark Twain, when they said it would be delayed. So I asked the CM and he said Earth Quake...I can't believe I didn't feel either one of them and I was in the park at both times. I guess I was walking and didn't feel anything. I was just outside of small world when it happened on Tuesday. Wow to think our party of people didn't feel any of them. We do live in Northern California, and so I have felt them, but didn't feel any of these.
I kept looking closely at your pictures, thinking I would see myself or DSIL in any of your pictures... But didn't..
You are a great photographer. That is what I do for a living, so when I go on vacations, I only take a point and shoot... I am on vacation. I lug around heavy camera's sometimes 6 days a week, so I bring the small stuff when on vacation, but your pictures are very good.
Thanks for sharing them. Isn't Disneyland just the very best place in the world. I do love WDW too, but since I grew up on DL, it is my favorite.

I'm up and ready to hit Disneyland Park followed by DCA, when I check my Blackberry and find out there's a couple of conference calls at work I must make even though I'm on vacation. :sad2: Guess I'll have to re-adjust my schedule.

I'm going to hit one of the three Aladdin shows at DCA today, as that would finish off my must-do list that I put together for this trip.

I expect today will be the last day with the light crowds, as I'd expect some people will be here on Friday for an extended Memorial Day weekend.

I'll probably do a short morning in the parks on Friday, and then return in the evening to watch the fireworks. I won't be in the parks at all on Saturday, as I'll be spending the day with my parents down at the beach.

Your photos talked me into it. I'll be there after work with the wife and kids. Going to do DCA, hit Orange Stinger(my 3 year old can now ride and loves it), Toy Story, Soaring (FP when we first get there), maybe Monsters Inc. and Bugs Land. I went over to Disneyland Park this morning, and had a nice breakfast at the Carnation Cafe. Yesterday I had breakfast at the River Belle Terrace. RBT is CS while CC is TS. The food was better at CC than RBT, but the view was better at RBT. I sat right at the railing at Carnation Cafe, so I got to watch the stream of people moving up Main Street.

I must say this is a fantastic time to visit Disneyland, as there really haven't been any crowds on weekdays. Most of the FastPass rides have the FastPass line shutdown, as there really isn't a need. Most rides have a 5-10 minute wait, except for the Finding Nemo Submarine ride and Toy Story Midway Mania. Combined with the perfect weather, and this has turned out to be a fantastic trip.

I purchased a Disneyland Annual Pass, and I must say they are much better than the WDW APs. These are plastic and have your picture on it, along with a barcode. The AP is scanned at the gate, without having to deal with using your thumb.

I'm planning on hitting the Aladdin show at the Hyperion Theater today, as well as having a late lunch at the Taste Pilot's Grill.

Yep, DL is definitely more compact because it's smaller in size but more packed with attractions.

MK was designed with the luxury of space, so pathways are wider and attractions are more spread out.

I actually like how DL is compact, because it makes traversing the park much easier for my feet!

Just FYI--there is a rumor that Alladin may be going away in the future and replaced with a Toy Story show. So glad you got to see it while you can. And, a CM told us yesterday that the Genie character only has about five scripted lines. All the rest is ad libbed (for those that haven't seen it--the Genie makes the show IMHO).

Mike I know what you mean! As a kid going to Disneyland was always an exciting thing, especially as we drove down the 5 and the excitement level just exploded once you were able to see the Matterhorn from the freeway, still several exits from the park. As an adult it still gives a little burst of excitement when I'm out there and drive by on one of the nearby roads or freeways and see it - even when I'm not going to the park. There's just something about a snow-capped mountain rising out of a concrete jungle! :) As an adult when DW and I lived in the OC just minutes from the park, I got to see it daily in my commute to/from work and it always brought a smile to my face. Add to all of that the fact that it was the first ever iron tubular coaster, the very first in the Disney mountain range, and the fact that it is unique, there is no other Matterhorn Bobsleds in the Disney universe and you have very one special attraction. And then when you get to see Tinker Bell fly from the top of the mountain down over the castle to start the fireworks...just magical.

It's just too bad, IMO, that they shuttered the Skyway back in the mid-90's...that was always such a treat to ride through the middle of the mountain. And I used to love watching the climbers in the summertime as they worked their way up the mountain to the top...it was even more fun when Mickey Mouse would get out there and climb the mountain! And of course, there's the iconic announcement after the splashdown ending "Remain seated please; permanecer sentados por favor" that made its' way into the REMEMBER...DREAMS COME TRUE fireworks show.

OH NO!! I'm glad I've seen it, but the grandkids missed it last time. Although, I bet Toy Story will be good too...

It is not for me either.... been on it twice, the swinging seats and the ones that don't swing but are up higher... NO THANKS

After reading this thread I actually had a dream about being on this ride last night! I'm hoping my imagination is much worse than the reality of it.

Hi Mike. Great report. I've been sharing your report with my 6 year old who has never been to DL. Ever since she's seen your pictures shes been "working" on Daddy to take us to DL. Last night at dinner we were all talking about DL and she says "Can we stay where that man on the computer is?" My DH says "who is she talking about?" and I say DVC Mike. Thanks for the great pictures and now because of them we will be heading to DL sometime in 2010.

A BIG THANK YOU DVC MIKE
I always look forward and enjoy your TR
This report has actually made me interested in trying to work out a visit to DL
I have a friend who said that after WDW I wouldn't like it at all but this TR is definitely changing my mind...

Mike for a first time visit how long of a stay would you suggest and when would be the best time to visit? We are flexible with time and all kids are grown so DH and I usually visit the WDW twice a year.

Thanks for your Help :flower3:

Mike,

Thanks for the TR. I really appreciate your taking time to take and post your pics. They are great! I go to DL 3 or 4 times a year and love it. I am going to WDW in a couple of weeks. This will be my third trip to Orlando. I like the wide choice of dining and resort options in FL, but I still find myself preferring DL. I know that most of this is just because of growing up here and all of the memories that I have that are associated with DL, but one difference that I have noticed between DL and WDW is the quality of the CMs. Is it just me or does customer service seem better at DL to you?

At a bare minimum, I would take three full days to experience the best of the Disneyland Resort. My trip was six full days, and I had plenty of time to experience attractions multiple times, have longer relaxing meals without worrying about wasting time, and generally having a very relaxing trip. When I come back in 2011, it will be for at least 5 nights.

Wow, what a difference in crowds today! People are taking an extended Memorial Day weekend, and it shows. Where the wait times for the rides was 5-15 minutes Monday through Thursday, they are much, much longer today! I can't imagine how busy the parks will be Saturday through Monday. Lucky for me, since this is my last day in the parks.

While on the DLR and GCV thread, does anyone actually know how close to selling out GCV really is?

My BWV resale went to Disney for ROFR 5/12 and have heard nothing. When I do, and hopefully pass, I want to add on 50 points at GCV for a every 3 year type trip.

What are the chances that it will be sold out, before I can add on?

Mike it's been wonderful "tagging along" with you this week! Enjoy your last evening there at DL, and your day tomorrow at the beach and with your folks. Safe travel home! Can't wait til your next TR the next time you're down in WDW, which I'm sure won't be too long. I hope that your wife has gotten the extra rest and relaxation needed while you've been gone.

You've inspired me...I leave for WDW next Friday morning with my sons for a father/son extended weekend getaway for our first time at Star Wars Weekends. Perhaps I'll follow your lead and do a live-type TR too. I'm not sure my camera is as good as yours is, but I might just have to give it a go.

Wow, those are some wonderful pictures you have taken! And I'm glad you're having a lovely time.

You mentioned the crowds for the weekend...last year was the same...the crowds came before the holiday weekend...and as far as we could tell, they all traveled home on the holiday Monday, b/c that's when our trip started and it was pretty quiet! Hoping for the same this year (starting trip Monday as well).

I left Disneyland Park and headed over to grab a Peet's Coffee near the GCH.

Can't find a peet's location close to the resorts. Where'd you go?

I love your trip report. We just planned a trip there for July--very quick notice for me since I'm used to the 11 months out for my DVC. Anyway, how did you get from the airport to your hotel? That's the last thing I have left to book. It will be my brother, and my two children and me, and I was leaning towards a car service. I really don't want to rent a car since my brother and I don't know the area. I think it might be too stressful to try to drive. Anyway, please let me know what you did for transportation. Thanks!

Come on over to the DL forums for more info. Briefly though, if coming from LAX or SNA, you can use SuperShuttle or Grayline's Disneyland Express. If coming from the others, Grayline's bus doesn't go there, but you can still use SuperShuttle. There are also car services and cabs but I haven't used those.

Yes, GCH has free WiFi access and free Wired access. Both are available in guest rooms.

For clarification, I was told that while they will have free wifi in all rooms, right now it's NOT in *all* rooms. But they do have ethernet cables in all rooms, in case wifi isn't enabled in your particular room yet.

Nescafe Gourmet Coffee? I don't think so...

FWIW, that particular cart made a spectacular coffee drink for me (thanks to my friend for "introducing" that cart to me!). Quite good.

And if you had Storyteller's coffee, that's Nescafe too. ;)

The Hagan Dazs ice cream shop in DTD (opposite the GCH entrance to DTD) opens at 8am and has an expresso machine. They serve Peet's coffee, lattes, etc.

If I leave before 8am I just pickup a latte at the GCH lounge.

Thank you so much for this report!

My DH surprised me a few weeks ago with a trip to "Laguna... I have a meeting there, I want you to go with me."

But I have a sneaking suspicion that he has added a secret first trip to DL up his sleeve. And since he's the show-up-and-get-it-done type person, and I'm the Let's-plan-for-three-years type person--- I have been secretly making touring plans -- Just in case.;)

We are WDW vets- never use a map- ever-- but the thought of showing up to DL for a first trip with nothing scares the heck out of me.

So i've been tagging along- and have to tell you that you've given me great visuals- so I'm feeling tons better about my "Is it a trip to the Land or not" trip to "Laguna".:goodvibes

Thanks again! Great pictures!!

I’ve very much enjoyed my trip to the Disneyland Resort in California. I think every fan of Walt Disney World who hasn’t made it out here should go at least once. Besides the rides at DLR that don’t exist at WDW, and the differences in other rides, it’s just a different experience. I really enjoyed how everything is clustered together, and how I can exit one way out of the GCH and be right in DCA, and exit another and be right in DTD. Disneyland Park is just steps away as well. Disneyland Park is not as large as the MK at WDW, but offers more attractions and is more intimate.

I can’t wait until my next visit out west when I get to stay at the Villas at the Grand Californian. While my GCH room was nice, I’d much prefer a 1-BR villa.

Tonight is my final dinner at the Napa Rose, after which I’ll pack. I’ll be at the airport tomorrow for the flight home.

Did you get a chance to look at the model villas of the VGC near the DL hotel? Amazing. BWV owner as well but the 1 bedroom is much nicer. Larger kitchen with Island, very large dining table to seat 6, bigger living room, the pull out xtra bed (for MIL) and two bathrooms, all in a 1 bedroom.

The DVC CM seem to say that all DVC units at VGC have a park view, either of the pier area or Grizzley Mountain. I seem to think there was a 3 bedroom that faced the front. We shall see.

Thank you so much Mike for all the great pictures and posts. I don't know if this is proper or not to ask so forgive me if it isn't but how many points do you have? That is a lot of vacations. We just bought 460 @ VGC and are wondering if that is enough to go twice a year. We have never done WDW and know that our points will go further there so maybe we will split the trips.:confused3 Thanks again for the great posts.

Hi Mike I just loved :love:your report especially since we are going next summer to dl. I do have a question for you...you went to northport beach is it close to dl?? My daughter wants to surf while we are in California if you have any suggestions which beach is better this would be great!!

We were going to go to Huntington Beach..Pics look outstanding, but instead decided to fly into San Diego for the first couple days of our trip, do Coronado Island Beach and LaJolla Shores Beach..We'll then head to DL!!!

Can't wait..first trip to California!

If I were going in and out of LAX, I'd go to Huntington Beach!! Looks awesome! Read outstanding reviews of Laguna Beach as well!

Enjoy!:goodvibes:goodvibes:goodvibes

Newport or Huntington Beach are probably the closest beaches to DLR.

Most beaches in SoCal have surfers. Since I don't surf, however, I can't say which is best.

Coupla comments:

the ferris wheels' stationery compartment isn't very scary. I couldn't handle the Skyway and I won't even try the swinging ferris wheel cages. You go really high, but it's not bad.

I love sitting out on my balcony, overlooking either DTD or DCA in the afternoon, watching the action. (we stayed at the Disneyland Hotel last summer, much to my disappointment - don't get me wrong - the Disney theming is excellent at the DH, but I prefer the GCH). Going on Grizzly River Rapids, then going up to your room to change out of wet clothes: aaahhhhhh....

It can get hot in the summer (even freak heatwaves in the Spring) but the low humidity makes it so much more bearable.

I miss Country Bear and Carousel of Progress and the Peoplemovers!

Question: when we looked into adding points at VGC, we were told the minimum was 100 or over, can't remember. Can you really add as few as 50?

Thanks for convincing DISers that Disneyland has a lot to offer. We're small, but we're original!

It was originally that you would have to purchase 100 points or more...but then, like BLT, they changed course, and went back to the old way of 25 points for cash, a minimum of 50 if you finance.

You can add as little as 25 points if paying in full, or 50 when financing.

In my boredom tonight, I was looking over Mike's DL trip report. Just looking at the transformation in that year is really cool. Thanks again Mike!
