I know this is such a simple thing but it can make your head feel so much better. After you or your child gets their hair braided make sure that you apply sun screen in between the rows. And be careful not to miss any rows (I did that once and had 3 red rows scattered on my head. hehe.) Anyways, leaving the braides in can always lead to a little bid of itching even when you wash them regularly (I just took mine out a week ago because the itching was driving me nuts), if you are also sun-burned the peeling scalp isn't too pleasant either. Just trying to save some people out there from going through what I went through the first time I got mine braided.

The spray on sunscreen works great for the head. I used it for my daughter when her hair was braided.
When you leave your braids in for an extended time, you need to get a special leave-in conditioner for them. Go to the Ethnic beauty supply section, and look for a product that specifies braids. There are lots of different brands...Pink, Just for Me, etc. I like the sprays so you can just spray down the lines.

Bring Q-tips and use them to apply sunscreen between your braids...we found it worked great and saved my DD from sunburn on her scalp!

How do you wash your hair with braids in them?
Do they loosen up?
Any other advice?

When they do them down there they are really really tight. And believe me, i'm an adult and it hurt me. The little girls around me had tears in there eyes because it hurt so bad but they didn't want them to stop. When you shower they don't come out at all. My hair is really really short and they still did mine. Just dab shampooo on the braids and then rinse it out. Its really easy to take care of them.

It really must depend on the person doing them because mine did not hurt at all and my 2 1/2 year old had it done and she would have been screaming bloody murder if they were hurting her in the least.
