I thought I had read that people buy their ponchos before they get to Disney because they cost much less than they charge in the parks. I thought they had said they purchased them for about a dollar at Walmart and Dollar stores. I went to our Super Walmart today and only found $5 ponchos in the camping area. Our Dollar General had nothing that I could find. I don't frequent that store, so maybe I missed them? Did my memory fail me? Has anyone else found $1 ponchos at Walmart?

I got mine at the Dollar Tree. They have a two pack for one dollar. Not the most durable but for that price you can buy several and throw them away after first use. :)

Got mine at a local, non-chain dollar store. So far it's lasted through 3 trips through Kali River Rapids, 2 days at Sea World, and St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. So I guess I got my money's worth!
The 2 fers at Dollar Tree seem to be very thin, like the plastic used in dry cleaner bags.

Just wanted to add that I know the Disney ones do cost more but they can be exchanged if they get a rip or anything in them with no problems.
We traded DDs one in about 6 times one trip as we had them on and off a bunch and she kept pulling on the buttons and ripping them.

We bought some at walmart at the camping section (they had both the more exp kind and the cheapo ones) and then our dollar tree has them 2/$1.00 in 1 pack so bought a couple pks from there as well. We prob have 8 to 10 ponchos for a 8 day trip!

I bought some yesturday at dollar tree. It was near the umbrellas, which happen to be located at the register- kinda like an impulse item. Thought it was odd, but hey I got em. They are flimsy, but I bought a ton to throw out after each use. You get 2 for a $1- one is clear and one is yellow. Good luck finding them.

Thank you guys/gals for all of your help! I went back to Dollar General and searched harder (and asked for help). I found a bunch for $1.25 each. My DD6 was very confused as to why mom needed 16 ponchos. I told her I just like to have them on hand just in case. The kids don't know about our trip yet! :rotfl2:

I got a bunch from Target in the camping section. They are made by Coleman and were $1.50 each. They are a little more durable than the ones bought from a dollar store, but my boys do destry them eventually.

We found ours at the same place at Dollar Tree. We buy a few packs. If they get soaked, we just toss them at the end of the night.

I bought a 2 pk in the Dollar Tree for our trip in 2007 and they were great. I went back to Dollar Tree and bought another 2 pack for our trip in 2008. We were in ride for KRR and I hear my husband saying "I don't think this poncho is for me." I turn around and it looked like he was wearing the poncho of a 4 yr old. :rotfl2: It was soooo funny. They said they were for adults but they sure didn't fit us. Needless to say we got a little wet on the rapids!
Anyway, you may want to open your ponchos from the dollar store just to be sure they are OK.

And just a note about the Disney ponchos: unless they've changed very recently, the ponchos contain latex, so if someone in your party has an allergy or sensitivity, make sure you avoid them!

I also want to point out that they smell very plasticy chemically, I have asthma, and I had a real hard time with them when we first got them. I thought I was in trouble for a few minutes there! And of vcourse no time to air them out if you buy them when its downpouring!
I got the dollar store ones, they were awful! I put my finger right through it when I put it on,it made a big hole! We ended up trashing them, they were worthless! we ended up going with teh Disney one which, aside from the awful plastic smell, once it wore off they were MUCH better quality and kept us much dryer.
Walgreens had some cute Mickey ones for 4.99 and a variety of colors if you want your fam to match (near the Chick FilA near downtown Disney). I also think its important to get ones that are a different color than everyone else, its really easy to get lost in a sea of same colored ponchos in the rain!

We picked some up yesterday and they are an opaque white color. That is all I saw anywhere that was selling them.
For what its worth, the Disney one is sooo much better than the dollar store or the walmart cheap ones. We bought both before we came and they are soooo flimsy and cheap. I spent $8 for throw away ponchos and got 8 ponchos and the ones from dollar tree are not for pooh size people. If you count looking like a saran wrap human cool, then you are Cool ;)
The disney one was $8, but worth it compared to $1, you get what you pay for. :)

Target has them now in their $1 section at the front of the store. We bought these last year and they ripped almost as soon as we put them on so we ended up buying the Disney ponchos anyway. They also have little first aid kits in their $1 section. I bought 2 of the insect sting kits to put in our backpack that we take into the parks because my husband got stung by something last year at BB.

What's so great about the $1 ponchos is that they fit in your back pocket (no need for a backpack). The other thing is that you don't have to worry about bringing a wet poncho back to your room to dry, refold and bring again. We always have ponchos at the ready, and simply throw them out (recycle them if you wish) when the rain is done!
