I thought I was going to get a 50mm for lens #2, but now I'm toying with the idea of getting a lens that's close to a full-frame 50mm equivalent. So I've narrowed this down to 2 lenses: Sigma 30mm f/1.4 or Canon 28mm f/1.8.

Which lens would you choose?

That's a tough one. I personally owned the Sigma and loved it, but the Canon gets good reviews too. The Sigma does have a 2/3 stop advantage over the Canon, so you might take that into consideration depending on your planned use for the lens.

Here's a comparison to help you out: http://www.focalplane.net/canon28sigma30/

Good luck and let us know which way you go!

I don't own a Canon, so I can't comment on the 28mm f/1.8---but I recently got the Sigma 30 after seeing all of the great low-light and shallow DOF photos people had been posting and LOVE it. :lovestruc

I LOVE my sigma 30. I debated it too, but it is on my camera probably 75% of the time. It is a great lens. I can't compare it to the Canon though...haven't used that one.

Well I found a good deal on a like-new Sigma 30mm so I'm gonna give it a shot. Should be here sometime next week.

Can't help with the Canon...but it sounds like you're going the Sigma route. Just got it myself this week, and love it. In the '30mm fan' thread, I've got a bunch of 'real world' daylight shots with it...here are some of my test shots I was doing to test focus, and depth of field at various apertures from wide-open...might interest you!

All shots are only resized, no processing or cropping:

Zackiedog, nice shots. I don' have the Sigma but I do have the Pentax 50mm 1.4. I like how your shots show the impact on DOF. Not just useful for low light.

The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is here. Wow, this lens is well-constructed. It's heavier than the 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 and has a very nice texture on it. I guess that's why it's an EX.

So far the focus is looking sharp as a tack. :thumbsup2

Here's one of my test shots... using the center focal point which is right on the "Lord of the Rings" text.
