Just curious to know if anyone is planning on running the Philly Distance Run? My sister and I are planning on doing this. I believe it's Sept 20th!

Hi Suzanne,

The Sept. event is the Philly Distance Run. It is a half. I did it last year and had a good time.
Just wanted to distinguish as it's different from the half that is run in conjunction with the Philadelphia Marathon, which is in November. The courses are similar, if not the same, but the events are conducted by different organizations.

DH and I are propably running this one. We did it last year and had a great time-- nice, flat course, usually good weather in Philia that time of year. The race was well run with pretty scenery along boathouse row. The entertainment was a bit sparse but ok. The Philadelphia Marathon Half has a similar couse but more hills through Fairmount Park-- it was also really cold last year-- water stations were all ice.

I'm thinking about signing up for this as well. One of the papers I picked up at the Broad St Run last weekend had a $10 off code for registration that's good until 6/15. I can post here when I get home if anyone needs it.

I'm in for the PDR as well. I haven't registered yet, but got a coupon at the Broad St. Run last weekend so will probably sign up soon.

This was my first half last year, and it is a really great race!

I ran it last year.. the Philadelphia Distance Run and enjoyed it. It remains my PR (1:50:08). If I have an opportunity to run it again this year, I will.

I also ran the Philadelphia Marathon (4:18) and enjoyed it, but as Jen said, it was C-O-L-D last year!

Good Luck!

Thank you for the correction. Is there a way to chance the thread title?

You can change the title by selecting Edit on the original post and then clicking 'go advanced'. It's been a while, but I think that is the way to do it.

I plan on signing up for the distance run. I was going to sign up for the philly half in November too, but I convinced a friend to do the Rothman 8k. I'll probably sign up after my next paycheck.

I expect to be running again for the 3rd year in a row. I really like the course. And I agree with Jen that the weather seems to be nicer in Sept than in November for the marathon. However, we had great weather the last 2 years of the PDR. There is always the risk of a 90-degree indian summer day. Oh yeah...for having a big sponsor like ING I thought the t-shirts and medals for the PDR this year were weak. The Broad St Run had way better stuff for less $$.

I'll be there. I plan on running with my TnT mentor. I'll be doing about 8 miles this week and 10 next week then taking it somewhat easy with another 6. I'll try to see you there! You guys will have to stick around and cheer me on since you will probably finish hours before me!

I am still planning to run this one. It will probably not be a PR this year, but I will use it as a precursor to another half I am running in Connecticut (Ridgefield Half) on October 4 and the Marine Corps Marathon in late October.

Maybe we can meet pre-race by Rocky like we did last year?

Does anyone have a goal for this one? I want to finish it under 2hrs 30 mins.

09-03-2009, 12:14 PM
This is a training run for me, so I just hope to matain a pace that will allow me finish successfully at Marine Corps. That means a pace under 14:00 min/mile will make me happy.

lourodrigis
09-03-2009, 03:56 PM
I guess Goal #1 would be to beat last year's PDR time of 1:43:35 and Goal #2 would be to set a 1/2 marathon PR of 1:42:20. All depends on the weather which was beautiful (cool and dry) last year. If we catch an indian summer day then this will just be a training run for NYC marathon.

mla1977

I just want to finish. It is really a training run for me, but if I could do better than I did for the Princess half I would be really happy.

I'm still hoping to do this race! My Achilles is much better, but I'm not sure if a half marathon in two weeks is a very good idea. I'm going to go out for a 3-4 miler tomorrow and I'm keeping an eye on things.

If I don't run I will probably volunteer, and would love to be included in any WiSH events that get put together. This is a great race and I would love to be part of no matter what.

After the RnR last week I no longer need to finish under 90 in this one to hit that goal. I have no real goal other than to stay injury free but if I am still on pace to do sub 90 at about mile 9 I will probably push.

I am in coral 1 so if I do slow up a little I will be passed like a broken down car. :lmao:

K80K
09-12-2009, 03:57 PM
I am in corral 17. Need to try my best to stay at a conservative pace so that I can get a 20 miler in the week after. Tried for it today but I think I left too much on the VB course to get it done.

lourodrigis

My corral number is 3 and RACE NUMBER is: 3594.

I think Howard posted this earlier but I'm thinking that WISHers could meet up near the Rocky statue before the race. I'll probably sit on the Art Museum steps right by the statue when I get there. I usually try to park on the street before the race so I will be there real early.

Frank - I have eaten at the Spagetti Warehouse numerous times over the last 15 years and I feel I need to give you a heads up. The last few times I ate there the experiences have been horrible. In fact, the last time I ate there there was a plastic bag at the bottom of my salad. I can honestly say I will never eat there again and felt the need to forewarn you if you are not from the area.

Kira- Did you decide to do this one with the Achilles issues and all?

Lou- Thanks for the heads up. We used to have a Spaghetti Warehouse here and while there was the occasional bad meal most were pretty good, as good as Americanized Italian can be at least.

I will attempt to get over to the stairs to meet everyone who I didn't in Nashville. Hopefully you guys will have WISH stuff on. I will have my RnR VA Beach shirt on until closer to the start.

Hey everyone! Sorry I've been AWOL lately.

Sadly, I made the decision not to run this race this year. My achilles is much, much better, and I have started to train again, but I think I would be tempting fate to do 13.1 miles right now. I am focused on staying healthy so I can earn my Mickey medal in January, and I think running a half this weekend is not a good idea.

I am thinking about coming down to cheer all you WiSHers on (although I may wander down a bit later than the 7am start)!! Once I figure it out I'll let you know.

HAVE A GREAT RACE EVERYONE!!!!

Sorry I missed you guys before the race. Had I checked in her the last few days, I would have seen this taking place.

I hope everyone had a great run. I beat my goal of 2:30 by coming in at 2:20! Does anyone know how many runners there were? It said there were 12,247 finishers?? I thought there were over 18,000.

Hello all. I just got home from the run. Sorry I missed the WISH meet. I got there a little later than usual so I just went to find some water, drop the gear, do some stretching, and do a little warm up jogging. I have to say the start was a bit more chaotic than most of the RnR races. I'm sure the fenced off finish area was part of it. I also think they over allocated the first and second corrals. The barrier had to be removed to get everyone in there.

After the first half mile though everyone filtered out and it was running as usual. I decided not to go for a PR but wanted to try and beat 90 again. The course was really fast and I am sure I left some time on it.

In the end I finished in 1:29:26 which is my second fastest and I am happy with it. The next long race is my first marathon, can't wait.

It was nice to see some of you this morning. Huge thanks to Cam and Howard for the loaner sweatshirt prerace  I hope everyone had a god day.

Butch did pretty well coming in at 2:02 (although he really wanted to break the 2 hour mark I'm still pretty proud of him)

I ran a PR with 2:38-- not as fast as most of you, but a good showing for me. We enjoyed the race and even hit the PF Changs lettuce wraps for a snack post race. We tried to wait around at the end but didn't have much luck finding people.

Congrats to everyone- look forward to seeing you again soon.

Jen - Congrats to you and Butch. Way to go on the PR! I hit the PF Chang booth too. That was a nice touch. I actually enjoyed the free MGD 64 beer too! The beer was okay but any free beer at the end of a race will attract me like a magnet.

I managed to PR the race (1:37:24). I really felt good today. I think the cool/dry temps had a lot to do with the PR.

Congrats to all the WISHers!

Great job everyone! Great efforts produced great results today.

Here is the scoop on my efforts today:

Miles: 13.24
Time: 2:03:28 (Garmin) 2:03:25 Chip
Pace: 9:19
Splits: 8:55, 8:38, 8:59, 9:23, 9:10, 9:26, 9:21, 9:56, 9:34, 9:39, 10:14, and 9:26.

I ran pretty well and was ahead of my 2:00 pace band by a minutes or more until mile 11. That is when time drew even, then surpassed me. I did stop to get a couple hugs (Cam and her partner from her law firm), and stopped at all but two water stops. I didn't carry liquids this time.

Overall I am really happy with my effort and the results given my lack of training and health history since March 6.

I didn't partake of any of the post race beer, or lettuce wraps supplied by PF Changs. I just wanted to get out of there and home to the shower and some football.

I have another half marathon coming up in just two weeks up in Ridgefield, Connecticut.

Have a great night and a great week ahead.

Sorry I missed the WISH meet. We underestimated the walk from our hotel to the start and ended up getting the short end of the port-a-potty line stick. Turns out ours was only feeding 2 port-a-pottys and we ended up ditching the line and just going to the start so that we could hit some on the course. Lucked out to be standing right in front of Jen in the corrals so we got to chit chat some while we waited for the start.

I set out with the goal of practicing my MCM race day strategy...2:1 for 13:30 miles. Worked out great! Crossed the finish line at 2:59:11 which is a 13:40, but my watch had me going 13.4 at 13:21. That 13:21 is the number that means the most to me. The trick would be not to stray from the tangents so much on marathon morning. :)

The course was beautiful. Could have used more bands out there, but after VB I was used to there being a lot more. The medal is adorable and I can't wait to get my Beach to Bell.

Lou: Awesome time, I'm impressed. :worship: I hope your shoulder is doing ok after all of that hard running.

Cam: If you get time to post it, I'd love to see the pre-race picture.

Katie: I'm glad to hear your race strategy worked out well. I wound up running 13.41 according to my Garmin, so I know what you mean about adding extra steps. Of course my Garmin got a bit confused a some points, so who knows...

I feel surprisingly good this morning and did not even have trouble going down the steps which shows only how flat the course was I think, not any real fitness gains on my part. NOw for some serious Goofy training...

We had a great race! Pre-race, we met up with our WISH friends. So glad to see Jen was wearing her lime RaceReady shirt--we were feeling mighty conspicuous! It was great to see everyone.

We moved to the front of our corral with Meghan. Even though we predicted a 3:00 finish, we were in corral 18, the last corral. Standing by the portapottys for an extra half-hour made me have to go (the power of suggestion!) so I stepped out of line to go. Of course, while in there, I heard the announcer yell, "Are you ready?! Get set..." and I wasn't ready. When I got out, Noah had moved back to meet me. We were now at the end of the last corral-not where we wanted to be! But it was a glorious morning, although a bit chilly. Here I am at the start:
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh165/msmightyduck/IMG_0588.jpg

At mile 1, my friend from work (the one who convinced me to try a half-marathon in Disney in the first place!) and her mom were there cheering us on:
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh165/msmightyduck/IMG_0595.jpg

We ran around City Hall:
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh165/msmightyduck/IMG_0598.jpg

Not long after this was taken, we spotted the police vehicle 200 feet behind us taking down the road closures: sweepers! We sprinted ahead a bit and never saw them again.

Noah found this flag and said something about military training and not letting a flag fall and forging ahead into battle:
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh165/msmightyduck/IMG_0649.jpg

We had negative splits the last five or six miles, I think. Here I am realizing I'm about to beat my Disney half:

Clock minus :30, making my finish 3:11:58. Woohoo! Noah was :59 because he stopped to take my photo.

Victory!

Thanks David. My half PR is 1:28:39 which I set waaaay back on September 6 at the Rock and Roll Virginia Beach. It took me quite a few tries. I missed it last year by 23 seconds last October and was quite annoyed. Keep trying, when you finally do it you feel great :thumbsup2.

I would love a BQ but it will probably be a couple of years. I'm doing my first full in October in Niagara Falls and while it should be cool and the course flat I have no idea what I will finish in, but I doubt it will be the 3:10 I need for Boston.

Did you see that in the newsletter from last night that they are rebranding this race? Next year it becomes the IGN Rock 'n' Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon. So we ran the last Philadelphia Distance Run.

Also they ahve it set up so that you can watch yourself cross the finish line: http://philadelphia.competitor.com/features/finishlinereplay/
