Went to the vet yesterday with Max for his regular check up- and it turns out my baby might have a seizure disorder. He's been 'biting at the air' lately when nothing is there. At first, I thought it was just an oddity of behavior. The doctor disagrees and thinks that there might be something else wrong. I know it may sound crazy to some - but Max is like my child. The thought of something like this happening to him is killing me. They ran a series of tests yesterday that I should get back today. If those are inconclusive, we'll have to do some other testing.
So, please think good thoughts for Max.
Thanks,
Pete

Pete I feel your pain, I just had to put one of my dogs down the day before vacation last week and I am just sick over it. However I do have some good news. My other dog has a seizure disorder and he has been fine for 11 years. I too thought he was having trouble with his hip due to the way he was behaving and it turns out he was having a seizure. He has been on meds for 11 years and occasionally has a rare seizure the med doesnt control but otherwise is just fine. Hang in there our furbabies are part of the family too! Max will do fine. Sending good thoughts and prayers your way.

Pete,
Our fur-baby, Buddy, died two years ago at a good old age. But he developed a seizure disorder when he was about 18 months old. He would know one was coming on and would get very clingy to us. He couldn't walk with most and would lie there trembling. It is very emotional to see it at first, but after a while you get used to it. We had him on seizure meds twice a day which seemed to lesson not the frequency, but the severity. Sometimes he got an odd odor with them as well. After a minute or two, he would come out of it and go get a drink of water and be all better.
Buddy never "bit at the air" so I don't know about that. I have seen dogs do things like that on Animal Planet show "It's me or the Dog." The trainer on there stated that things like that are sometimes a mental disorder and sometimes just the dog being bored that needs some stimluation - just telling you that for what it's worth. . .
Good luck to you and your baby - I totally understand. Baby and Buddy were our lives for 15 years (Pomeranians). . . After they passed we waited and grieved for over a year and then bought Dobie this past summer. He is not a replacement but another child to us all the same.

Modern Vet medicine is wonderful and if Max is ill, I am sure your vet will be able to provide you with the just the right fix so that he is feeling well again. I will be thinking and praying for him

Hey Pete,
I am sorry you are upset about Max, but I have good feelings he will be OK. My friend's dog is a beagle and he has a seizure disorder as well and he has lived for a few years with it already. I do not think it is strange at all that you think of him as your son.
My dog Trevor, who is a Golden Retriever, just turned 11 last month. He IS my brother. He has recently had a slew of medical problems... he has lymes disease, he gets these lipomas all the time that he has to have surgically removed, he had a cancerous melonoma on his paw he had to have removed twice... then just this February he slipped in the snow and tore his ACL in his hind knee and he had to have emergency surgery to repair it and have a titanium plate put in his bone. It took 8 weeks to heal but he is in good spirits now. Max knows you love him and as long as he knows your there for him he will do well.
Much love
This is Trevor 4-5 years ago, he is a happy boy.

Pete, I think very few people who are dog lovers think of their dogs as anything less than their "babies". They mean the world to us don't they. I had a cockapoo several years back that had a seizure disorder/epilepsy. His seizures were well controlled with meds. We would always stick the pill in a bit of peanut butter and he loved getting his "treats" everyday. Little did he know how helpful those treats were for his well-being. He lived a very full and happy life.
I send my best thoughts out to you, Max and Walter!

Pete ~ I completely understand. As you see from my siggy my babies aren't just fur-babies. Molly, my brittany, had a seizure disorder for 9 years and it didn't shorten her life or take away from her enjoyment of life.
The vet's put her on phenobarbitol (sp?) and it made her sleepy in the beginning. Eventually her system got used to it and I started slowly reducing the amount. She never had seizures again and was very active.
Sending prayers and pixies for a healthy Max.

Much love and positive thoughts to Max and to you. Years ago I had a dog with seizure disorder. The only time she had seizures was when she had something amiss. I knew then to look for a tick, fleas, urinary tract infection, something wrong. If she wasn't in perfect homeostasis, she had seizures. As long as she was perfectly healthy, the seizures were kept in check. Her problem was very, very mild.
I will wish for you both that Max's problem is non existant, but if it can't be that, may it be as managable as my Chelsea's was. Much love to you both.

Sending you good wishes. It sounds like there are some treatments out there that might work for your baby. My son has epilepsy & his seizures are currently totally under control from the meds he taking. Now he is on 3 meds & it is like a cocktail that has to be changed & refined from time to time. In then beginning you may have to tell the vet how things are going.
I do know how you feel about your animals. When my cat died last year I cried so hard for many, many days. still miss her too.

Pete my little guy had a seizure 4 months ago......and then nothing, whew. but then sunday nite at 3am had another and at 2 pm monday had another. it broke my heart to hold him till he came out of it. we called the vet and they put him on phenobarbitol. he had a small seizure that evening and since he will shake his head and as you say, make odd motions with his mouth. the drug, which is a sedative, raises the seizure threshold but takes a week or so to become 100% affective and has side affects of its own. i will let you know if he returns to normal once his metabolism adjusts to the meds. good luck to both of us and max and jasper.

It's not silly at all to consider a pet as such a close and important part of your family. Pets have such a great impact on someone's life and there are so many benefits for having furry family members.
You and Max are in my prayers! My yorkshire terrier had epilepsy and lived with it till he was 16 years old. He was on phenobarbital and the meds controlled the seizures pretty well.

Hiya Pete,
Like everyone else said, I do not think you are crazy. In fact, I know exactly how you feel. I have two teacup cats (miniature breed) and one of them had a very scary incident about three weeks ago. I was a reck, but all is going well.
I also have a beagle with thyroid disease and a nervous condition. We cannot bring her to the vet without her going into a seizure and then having to go into the pet hospital to bring her out of it. This includes when she needs her nails cut (she won't let us do them). So, our vet actually comes out into the car and does them there so she doesn't have to go through all of that. She is also on thyroid medication twice a day.
Pets are just like people. They are our children. Many hugs and pixie dust to you and Max. Please keep us updated.

Max is my favorite podcast mascot, so add my prayers to the puppy pile.
It is very heartening to hear all of the reports of seizures being controled with meds, so stay positive Pete!
And timmac, sorry to hear about your cat.
They say that animals don't live as long as humans do, because it doesn't take them as long to deserve to go to heaven. They perfect that unconditional love thing a whole lot faster than we do.
Most nights I sleep in the bed with our two labs and my husband ends up on the couch, because he doesn't get there early enough to get a good spot...so I have no comment on how crazy it is to think of your pets as children.

Pete,
I am sorry to hear you received such distressing news...especially before the podcast cruise. I hope the vet is able to help control Max's seizures so you are able to leave town without Max's health weighing on your mind and heart.
Best wishes to you and Max!

So sorry to hear about Max. He is so cute (thanks Corey for the pic) and I think we all love it when we hear him "tap-dancing" during the shows. I hope everything turns out okay for you all. It must be so difficult getting this news right before the cruise. Hang in there. We are all thinking of you.

Hoping for the best for you. I know exactly what you mean as we had a dog that was our kid also (we have not kids). They are a huge part of your life.

Thanks,
Pete
I understand exactly what your feeling. Not crazy at all. I'll add Max with Nala (my cat) when I hope for her (and his) better health. Nala recently had a cancerous lump removed from her gum line. It was diagnosed as an osteosarcoma. Well ... the lump is growing again. It has already cost me a podcast cruise but ... the choice was easy.

My dog has idiopathic epilepsy (that just means they dont know what causes it) and it starts sometime in the first year or two of life....
I was a WRECK when I found out ....
That was (are you ready....) 12 years ago :) He is still alive and doing GREAT. He has seizures once in a while, but my vet said that its actually not uncommon in certain breeds, and even his own dog had it and lived to be 18 or something crazy! :)
Believe me, you will get "used" to the seizures, if that is what it is, and its like old hat to us. My dog has never had to go on medicine and he can go a couple of years even without one....
Good luck to you, but just know that even if it is this, its hopefully not that bad! :)

If you need a second opinion, take Max to Affiliated Veternary Specialists, on 17/92 in Maitland. They have board certified Nerologists there & they are wonderful. If your vet is willing, ask him to refer Max there. 407-644-1287

 it's soooo hard when our babies get sick, isn't it?! it's not even like you can reason with them or rationalize what's going on to them. It's soooo hard to watch them go through medical stuff!

Sending good thoughts and prayers your way for you and Max Pete, so sorry to hear it. I COMPLETELY understand about a dog being like your child, that's how ours is to us. We had a Golden with a seizure disorder and luckily they have great medications out there that work wonders, just like with humans and epilepsy they have great drugs for dogs that help too. Keep us updated!
