Well, this year's Tony nominations are out.

http://www.playbill.com/news/article/128922.html

Surprised to see that 9 to 5 wasn't nominated for best musical.

Next to Normal looks very intruiging to me.

Just got back from NYC. I travel there twice a year to catch up on theater...and see friends too (well, mainly to see theater, but don't tell my friends...hee hee). Saw seven shows this trip and loved just about everything I saw.

Next to Normal is a powerful and amazing piece of theater. Alice Ripley plays a woman with bi-polar disorder and she gives truly an amazing performance. I've always been a big fan of hers, but this performance is truly a highlight of her career. The show really looks intensely at the impact of mental illness on a family and how one woman tries to cope when all treatments fail her. Wow, I just keep thinking about it. And I can't stop listening to the music. Highly recommend it.

Also saw Billy Elliot which cleaned up with nominations. Overall, it also was fantastic. I found the music to be somewhat unremarkable, but as a show, it is a winner.

Oh yeah, this is a DISboard, not Broadwayboard...you get me talking theater, it's hard for me to stop!

I agree - NEXT TO NORMAL was fantastic. 9 to 5 not so much - I wasn't surprised it got passed over - it really isn't that great.

So who else is excited for the Tony Awards on Sunday?

Dolly Parton, Liza Minelli, and Sir Elton are all scheduled to perform!

Should be a great show!

Who are you rooting for to win?

I'd love to see Miss Dolly win for her score to 9 to 5, but I sure wouldn't begrudge the creators of Next to Normal the win. That's a great score, too!

I'd also love to see Gaving Creel (Hair) and Christopher Sieber (Shrek) take home Tony's for thier work. Especially since they're out gay peformers and they're both pretty hot. ;)

First we had the whole "Mame" incident and now this. We really need to screen people better before we let them post! :snooty:

I find that hard to believe.

What have you heard of Next to Normal?

I'm really liking what I've heard so far. And I LOVE "Superboy and the Invisible Girl"!

I also really like "Shine like the Sun" from Miss Dolly's show.

The next to normal music seems so derivative to me -
somewhere between Rent and Spring Awakening.

What I heard and seen Of 9 to 5
(I love you Dolly! Sorry!)
JUNK.

Okay so who watched?

NPH was AWESOME as host. And his closing number ROCKED! And was that a leather suit? He looked great in it!

I was really glad that the revival of HAIR won, but was pulling for Next to Normal to win Best Musical.

Is Liza becoming a caricature of herself or is she just a trainwreck?

So many shows I want to see now!

Loved it!!

Didn't get to see all of it, but did catch Angela Lansberry winning and NPH at the end. That was hyterical. Also liked the tribute to Jerry Herman. I love the history of it all.

Watched the opening number then taped the rest to watch later today. Was it just me, or was there something wrong with the sound? When Elton first started singing you could barely hear him then it kicked in. Then it seemed like you could hear people waiting in the wings instead of the people on stage! Loved Stockard Channing!:happytv:

Okay, now that I've got a moment, here are my thoughts on the Tony Awards.

New revivals of Guys and Dolls and West Side Story? Really? Again? So soon? There should be a moratorium on reviving these shows along with Gypsy and Grease for at least ten years. There are too many great shows out there to be re-doing these four every two or three years!

The only thing funnier than Bret Michaels getting hit in the head by flying scenery because he was waving to the audience instead of paying attention to where he was supposted to be has got to be NPH saying he'd given new meaning to the term "head banging" :rotfl2:

Rock of Ages looks horrifically bad. My mind boggles that it got a Best Musical nomination and 9 to 5 didn't.

Nothing of what we saw last night of Billy Elliot last night makes me want to see the show. Honestly, I'm sure the kids are great dancers, but he looked like he was having an epileptic seizure to me.:confused3

I'd love to see Next to Normal, Gods of Carnage, Hair, Shrek, 9 to 5, and Waiting for Godot.

NPH was AWESOME as host. His off the cuff comments were hilarious, and his closing number was brilliant!

I agree NPH (love that we initialized him) was fab and yes he soooo rocked that leather suit.

Personally, being a rock chick from the 80s, I am dying to see Rock of Ages. But I lived it, ya know?

Would love to see Guys and Dolls-have never seen it.

Can we please just say enough JERSEY BOYS FOREVER....so over it.

Hey Rob! Between work and taking care of my pregnant DP I have no life. ;) But I am not complaining. The baby is looking great due in 37 days and at our last ultrasound he already weighed 5.5 pounds.

We are both very excited and can't wait to meet him. :yay:

A couple of observations that Rob didn't already make:

1) The Revival for Guys and Dolls looked dreadful. The 1992 Revival w/ Nathan Lane did a much better "Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat".

2) Did Carrie Fisher come to the Tony's straight from rehearsals for Maude! The Musical???:confused3

OMG, I completely agree with you Billy Elliot comment. I like what was going on behind the kid, but he was so har dto watch. I loved the Next to Normal number. I downloaded it off iTunes after the show. It is amazing, but now I have to buy the actual CD so I can get lyrics, lol.
I'm hoping Shrek and 9 to 5 tour so I can see them (and we need a 9 to 5 CD please!!!). I missed the first 40 minutes of the show, so I was slightly depressed. And how in god's name did Rock of Ages get nominated as a best musical? I had my hands over my eyes shaking my head the enitre number. Its only saving grace, IMO, is Amy Spanger who I adore.
