Hi everyone! I've been around the boards for a little while, but since we're doing our planning session tomorrow, I figured I should get around to a PJ!
I'm Nicole and my fiances name is Evan. We met over 7 years ago in high school and started dating soon after. Evan is actually a couple years younger than I am, so when I went off to college (Ball State) he ended up going to an academy on that campus, then on to Purdue. Flash forward a few years later and I live in Williamsburg, VA as a tailor (I think you can guess for what company) and Evan is currently in the Navy, doing school in Charleston. The military thing has made planning this wedding pretty difficult, but we're hoping it'll work out!
He proposed to me last December (with some mischief from my friends). They got me to go to an evening performance (18th century ball) with them one weekend. Unknown to me Evan had driven up from Charleston, they had gotten him a full 18th century silk suit from work, and he was waiting to surprise me at the end of the show. When they invited him in, it took me a few seconds to recognize him! Well, it went off beautifully and my friends were smiling about it for days. Turns out half of where I work knew about it before I did!
As for the wedding, since I'm a theatrical design person, it's going to be a 1930s style gala. I'm sure I'll have a lot more details soon, but for now I can say I'm not only building two gowns for me, but Evan's morning suit as well. My two bridesmaids are seamstresses as well, so they're making their own gowns. I think part of the reason we're doing a Disney wedding is so I don't try to do everything myself! I'm already making the invitations and favors on top of the sewing projects (I did give in and purchase the top hats though).
We'll be meeting with our wedding planner (Ken) tomorrow, so I'll be trying to add lots more after that!

Well, Monday was great, if not a little overwhelming! I just flew home this afternoon, so I don't have time to go through it all right now (but soon!). So, here's my inspiration board I put together. We're using a lot of silver, navy, aqua blues, and some copper. For decorations think orchids, mercury glass, and palms.

I suppose this is the point where I'd put up pictures of my gown, but seeing as 10 yards of silk doesn't look like much, that's going to have to wait a couple months! Hopefully I'll get my sketches uploaded soon though. In the mean time, I can put up pictures of the top hats and the fascinator I just got this week (squeal!).

While on the subject of accessories, my bouquet is going to be the vintage layed-out style with cala lilies and orchids. I'm going to go on the hunt for a vintage brooch to pin to the wrapped stems soon. Adding that to the list along with hair combs for the BMs, a silver purse, and something for my hair at the reception. Why is it that the guys get off so easy with all this? I picked Evan up some cufflinks last week and all he needs now is a tie-tack. Eh, but I'd miss the feathers if I was a guy.

I actually had time off last night, so I got some sketches done and uploaded! These are the two gowns I'm in the process of building:
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii272/ColeVintage/Costumes/DSC02342.jpg
It's going to be out of an off-white silk charmeuse, and possibly a silk velvet for the jacket.
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii272/ColeVintage/Costumes/DSC02346.jpg
This is for the reception and I managed to find a real silk lamé in silver (not the scary spandex kind). I'm going to have a shoulder wrap piece with long strands of beading (inspired by Ginger Rogers).
Now I just have to make sure I don't eat so much at the reception that I bust out of the gown!

My MOH just moved back to VA, well it's almost been a year :sad1:, but she's going to William and Mary for Grad School. I love Williamsburg. I always say that whereas most kids had annual passes to Disney etc., I had one to Colonial Williamsburg, still have mine from when I was 5 lol.

Thank you for all the compliments and good words!
Spacerangerqueen: I hope your MOH likes it up here! It's really a great place to live (except for all the storms this week).
I finally have enough time today to go through our planning session we had last week. Since Evan is in the navy, getting time off for trips just doesn't happen, so my mother and I went down. We met with our planner, Ken, at 9 and started covering all the logistics. Table layouts, time schedules, transportation needs, music, and a long check-list he had. It's amazing how many things you have to decide before you even touch the floral and decorations!
We're using SBP, which is a fairly simple setup of chairs. Thankfully we get to use the new plastic ones (I think they said they have 58 or so) which look like wood folding chairs. We're keeping the ceremony basic, so no table for candles or sand. I was also glad to find out they have a table set up with a water dispenser for the guests! We've also got a string trio somewhere off to the side, depending on the angle and brightness of the sun.
The reception is the complicated part! Ariels has three areas, one of which is used as the dance floor. We decided to use the back lower area for pre-reception and buffet, and the upper for the main tables.
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii272/ColeVintage/DSC02356.jpg
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii272/ColeVintage/ZR6R3249-1.jpg
We've still got the string trio for the pre-reception, but after that we're going to an ipod set up. I've got hours of 1930s music downloaded, so I might as well use it!
Our transportation is going to be the Rolls Royce. Since the ceremony and reception are so close we aren't doing anything between for the guests and our wedding party wanted to walk and "show off". So Evan and I are getting in the car, driving down the Boardwalk and taking pictures down there. We'll get picked up in front of that hotel and taken around to the Beach Club so I can get changed. After making that drive last week, the bridal party walking might get back before we do!
Next will be the fun stuff: decor and food!

Our florist came at about 1, and that's when we got to the really fun stuff! The colors I'm focusing on are silver, navy, mint, and a misty blue-green. Walking around Francs I fell in love with the silver pebble charger, so we started there. We're using navy bengaline tablecloths in the reception area, and silver on the pre-reception tables and highboys. Our centerpiece ideas are small lamps in the pre-reception area (like an old nightclub), palms with peacock feathers with mercury glass for the guests tables, and frosted glass candle containers with orchids on our table. We're using palms and orchids in the ceremony as well. I've got a bit of an addiction to orchids, so it's a good thing they fit in well!
I don't want to fill up a whole page putting up inspiration photos, so if anyone is interested they're up on a blog (http://vintageweddingbliss.blogspot.com).
Our cake design is still up in the air. The baker had to finish a 7' tall cake for a wedding on Saturday, so he was too busy to get a lot of ideas drawn out. If anyone has pictures of that cake, it'd be impressive just to see! He said he was on a ladder most of the day. So, with a few new ideas (my favorite is going to be kept a secret, because it's just that amazing!), I sat down with a sketchbook and came up with a new design. I just have to colorize it, then we'll see if it's feasible. My first idea was apparently a "fake" cake done for a show and isn't really physically possible! However, the inside was easy. After stuffing ourselves on cake, we approved Evan's pick of almond cake and amaretto mousse, then made the center layer with tropical mousse for some variety. All of it was really very good, but I'm just not excited by chocolate wedding cakes since I can that from regular restaurants around here. Once you see the rest of our menu, you'll see that "normal" just doesn't fit with us!
Our day ended with a tasting session in the afternoon. I remind you that it was just my mother and I (they had apparently emailed us to "narrow down" the list, but we were on a cruise...oops!). After our appetizers of flat breads from Jiko's (I'm still amazed they could do those in a regular oven!), they brought out this:
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii272/ColeVintage/DSC02339.jpg
Beef w/ potato wedges, Chicken w/ Anandapur sauce, Spice-encrusted cornish game hen, jasmine rice & stir-fry vegetables, Miso Salmon, Maize encrusted halibut, and Tandoori chicken. Obviously, we aren't having that much at the wedding! We choose the beef, a poultry, and a fish. The rice and (now) steamed vegetables will be sides. It was an easy choice, but everything was still amazing! I'm still drooling thinking about it a week later.
Once I get the cake design and an image of our "logo" in to Ken, it's all on them, which is a great feeling!

Just wanted to say how excited I am today! Evan just found out his prototype schedule for Naval school and it all works out. He'll actually have almost all December off, so we don't have to worry about rescheduling the wedding! (and I get to see him for two weeks in June!)

Your ideas are gorgeous! I had a "turn-of-the-century" theme and it was fun to see all the ways I could incorporate a historical period. Of course, I'm not nearly as creative or talented! My DH and his groomsmen even wore the same morning coat you have in one of the pics on your blog. I thought they looked so distinguished!! I can't wait to see what you come up with!

I got a rendering of a cake design idea done this weekend. The first picture I sent him (of what I [I]thought[I] was a real cake) goes against physics, so after a quick 30-second discussion I had with the baker as he walked through the office, I put together some new ideas. I have no clue if it's feasible either, but we'll see what they can do!

Well, I have officially started on the invitations and Evan's suit. I cut out his muslin (cheap mock-up) last night and got our logo done on Sunday. We're using the image on the paper cones for rose petals. A slightly different version will be on our invitations as well. And, yes, that is the lighthouse at Yacht Club (my own little "hidden mickey" thing). I'm still trying to decide if those are the colors I want to use for the invites. Figuring out what font to use, let alone what color to do it in is much harder than anticipated!

Pinkcow: that wedding is by far my favorite wedding ever! I have soooo many pictures of it on my computer. They used to have a website up, but it's since disappeared. I got my BEO and budget yesterday (floral came a week or so ago), and it's lower than we expected! We cut a few small things from the floral, like using all highboy tables for the pre-reception rather than small tables with five chairs each, and cut the idea of a few extra palm trees. Even with that complicated menu, it's still less than $100 a person! Here's a few images that Laura, our floral planner, sent me for the reception:
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii272/ColeVintage/4393050CL.jpg
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii272/ColeVintage/BG-1519LGD_DT.jpg
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii272/ColeVintage/BG1760_DT.jpg
The first big one is going to be on the guests tables (15" high) with palms and feathers. The small votives surround it. The other fun shape is going to be with a few others in a mixture on the bridal party table surrounded by copper orchids.
I still have to talk to Ken about the cake design (I didn't think it'd be physically possible, but one can try!). I also got a great deal done on my gown last weekend, planned on finishing it this weekend, but ended up with a horrible insect bite on my hand and I'm not allowed to use it!
We're also debating about switching the string trio to a jazz trio. Most of the songs we really want played wouldn't work without a woodwind. Anyone else use them? We still can't decided on which instruments. Evan wants a bass, but that's about as far as we got.

Woo hoo! I got a mock-up done of the invitations today! I'm still waiting on the ribbon to go around the pocketfold, but that should come in soon. Granted, there's still a lot of printing to be done before I even need it. Everything else is coming along, but slowly. My wedding gown is almost finished (hook & eye, then hem), but I can't do much more until those darn shoes get here. I'm struggling my way through Evan's suit, but only seeing him every 1 or 2 months makes things much slower! If the fitting next weekend goes well I should be ready for the last fitting in November...eep. The BMs are coming over tomorrow to start draping their gowns as well. The ball is finally rolling, it's just more of a boulder than ball!

My shoes arrived today!! Since I'm making just about everything, having something arrive already completed is quite a novelty! It also means I can finish my gown this weekend since I'll be able to mark out hem length. Evan's trousers are almost done, and so are the invitations, so I should have a good amount checked off soon. Anyway, here they are! I got them from a vintage reproduction shoe site. They ended up a shade darker than the gown, but the same tone and oh so comfortable!

So I've recently found myself with a lot more sewing time, although most of it is filled sewing for other people. However, I have managed to finish the gown (exempting some pressing). The jacket is on it's way as well, just no sleeves in it yet. If I didn't have a workshop this weekend, it'd be done by Sunday. It's at the point where I just want it to be done and over with, so I figured a little incentive gown try-on would help. The jacket is out of silk velvet, which is one of the worst fabrics to work with EVER. But, without further ado, here are some really terrible shots of the gown!

Everything else just makes so much sense to me the way you set it up! Where are you guys sitting tho'? I've seen the sweetheart table in between those black squares looking over the dance floor, so that's where we're planning on having ours. :) Our P.S. isn't until New Year's Eve tho', so we'll see if any of this changes! ;)

Thanks for the kind words on the gown! I got the jacket done yesterday, so next time I trap a friend in my house I'll make them take decent pictures of it all. I gave in and made death's head buttons for it (18th century thread wrapped buttons- definitely my favorite thing from that time period). Evan's suit is next on the list then on to silver lame! Now if they'd just send updated BEOs......
WDWBride: we're actually not using a sweetheart table. Our bridal party is only four people and we don't get to see them much so we're sitting together at the top left table. We've also since made a couple changes like moving the guestbook/place card table next to the seated tables to make a wall between them and the walkway, and we made all the small tables highboys for pre-reception (chairs cost so much and just aren't worth it!). If you're around on the 29th stop by and take a look or wave! Who knows what it will look like by that point!

Now that I won't be clothing-less at our ceremony, I suppose I should go make sure Evan at least has trousers....

In our pre-reception area we're planning on 4 high boy tables with silver bengaline tablecloths. I really wanted something "night club" for the tables, but I couldn't find any lamps that I liked and the other tables have tons of votives on them, so that was out. I happened across these looking up "1930" on etsy and they're just perfect! I have a few more on order so I have a couple back ups for breaks and a mixture of shapes and colors. They're just glass insulators that they used to use on top of power lines. Cheap and plentiful in all sorts of styles and colors- and the little fake candle votives fit perfectly!! One less thing I have to make. Now onto finishing the beading on that silver lame gown.....

Oh! And we finally got orders from the Navy this week, so we know Evan has almost all of December off!!! I'll actually have a groom! We don't know the exact date he reports to his ship, but it won't be until after New Years!

This weekend is apparently "frantically finish all lists possible" weekend. So, I ordered 6 vintage umbrellas to rent for the ceremony. I was only planning on five, but you get an extra fee if you're under $100 and I was at $90. Hmm, $40 fee or $10 umbrella?? I'm really excited about these! Just perfect for Boardwalk shots. I'm getting them from Bella Umbrella- mailed down to the hotel (thankfully a bit early just in case of holiday backup) and I just need to find a UPS store after....

Next DIY done! This was by far the easiest of the projects. I made a fur muff for each of the bridesmaids, rather than have them carry a bouquet. We'll pin a small spray of orchids on the front for the ceremony. They're just so cute, I'm thinking I'm going to make myself one later as well!

Just stopped by your PJ, everything looks amazing so far. The invitations look fantastic, did you print them yourself after designing them? The dress is jawdropping! I'm a huge fan of the vintage styled theme and am trying to incorporate small elements into my wedding...you've been doing an amazing job! :thumbsup2

Thank you everyone!! I finally made it back tonight (missed the connecting flight and had to wait 5 hours....). Everything was amazing and I can't wait to start a trip report! The Roots have a few preview shots up here (http://rootphotography.blogspot.com/) and hopefully I'll get back on here tomorrow to talk all about it after some much needed sleep!

Me too! I'm 19, and in a box at home I have 12 annual passes just sitting there plus mine from this year! :)
That has to be one of the coolest jobs ever! I would loveee to work for Colonial Williamsburg, but guess I'll just work for Disney instead!
I adore your proposal, that's wonderful! I happened to be there this winter (new year's) and there was a family with a younger guy and a girl. the girl and the guy were going on a carriage ride and the family was taking a million pictures. When they pulled away, the father of the girl was like "Good grief, you'd think she would notice that we're taking so many pictures" and Someone spoke up and asked why there were taking so many photos and the father spoke up and said "Because he's proposing to her while on that ride". Seriously. that's amazing.

It is a fun job! Although, you do get some really odd moments (and awkward ones too). When you're in costume, people tend to forget that you're a real person and the whole personal boundary gets lost. But the amount that I've learned and have been able to teach to others makes it all worthwhile! And the clothes, the clothes make it worthwhile too, but that doesn't sound as good.....

Just a tip, we had them mailed to our hotel, which worked out well even in the holiday season. Let the company know that situation and you might be able to get them to mail it a bit early so there's no issue. Oh, and beware the vintage mechanisms to lock the things open, it bit a big chunk out of my finger.....
