View Full Version : Any Fellow Wii Fit Users?

I just started using the Wii Fit this week and was wondering if anyone else is using it. I've already found my favorite games (skiing rocks!) and most hated ones (come on, they throw cleats and PANDAS at you in soccer?!). I also bought the Fitness Coach game, but so far I haven't tried that one because I've been loving the Fit one. I lost almost 30 lbs. through diet changes (cutting out desserts and snacks), so I'm hoping this will help me shed the last 20. I'm too lazy to go to the health club and I get bored with DVD routines, so now I have no more excuses.

I love the Wii Fit too, my favorite is the Advanced Step...my not so favorite are most of the balance ones, I'm not so coordinated. I use it to help out when I can't get my walks in.

WTG on your loss so far, keep going with what you're doing and you'll get those last ones off.:cool1:

It's great to see another Wii Fit user. It killed my last excuse for not getting more active ("But I don't have time to drive to the gym and the class times are not convenient!"). I'm a bumbler at the Step so far, but I have the skiing down pretty good. It's funny...we were on a Segway tour in Nassau last week, and when we stood still for photos, mine would always go to the left. the guide said that was because my center of balance was off. Sure enough, the exact same thing showed up on the Wii so now I am trying to work on that.

I have one too. I like the strength training an dmost of the aerobic ones. My girls chose at least one activity that I have to do before I can finish. Usually it's the candle one (you'll get it after you've been using it for a while), super easy...when they aren't pestering me :) The running one isn't too bad neither is the advanced step (on your own) as I usually get on my eliptical at that point or watch tv.

BTW, i too am not a fan of the soccer one. The ski jump rocks though!

The advance step just gets a little tougher and faster then you can also open up a free step, put it on a regular tv channel and step while you watch, it's cool too. I don't like the soccer one either. I have a lot of work to do on my balance though too.

Aha, I finally figured out the step...I was doing it wrong. Now I LOVE that one! It gave me a great workout this morning, and I unlocked the penguin balance game so I messed around with that one too. My center of balance is actually getting better since I started. Now I hope the pound loss follows.

I love my Wii Fit. I have had it since January. The step is my favorite, I sometimes use the Free Step at night when I am watching a TV show. I also like the yoga. It raises your heart rate and makes you feel good.

I also like the fact that it gives you a score for what you do. This always makes me want to do better than I did the last time.

I don't like the penguin or soccer game, and the snowboarding is my favorite balance game. My husband always laughs at me when I hula hoop, but it sure is a good workout.

Last time I put in a goal, I put in +5 instead of -5, so now when I lose some weight, it always tells me I am going to have to work harder to reach my goal. :rotfl: :rotfl2: Oops....

Another Wiifit user here. Although I stopped using it about 7 months ago. I was concerned about the electricity going through my body (for the weighing/body fat part). So I don't attribute my 20 pound weight loss over the last year to the Wii fit per se.

But I like it as one more way to keep active in the house. I also think the regular Wii sports games (tennis, bowling, boxing) are good workouts.

If someone said they had x budget and could only afford a gym membership or a Wii and Wiifit, I'd say buy the gym membership. But as one more piece of your weight loss regime, the Wiifit doesn't hurt.

I love the Penguin game, hate the soccer, like the yoga. I read somewhere they are going to add some new stuff... what was it...? Anyone know?

AND - does anyone know if you can play the tennis and other sports games over the internet connection with other Wii friends?

Although I'm a fairly new user, I can feel that the workout kicks my butt so I have no doubt I will lose some weight. It depends which games you use, of course, but if you're doing the aeorbics you work up a heck of a sweat.

The rhythmic boxing is fun!! I've advanced to the 6 minute one and it's hard. I'm huffing and puffing afterwards, but I know I'm doing some good with it!

Wii Fit is fun, and there's enough variety, in my opinion, that I'm not getting bored. We got ours in November and I've faithfully been doing it about 5 days a week. It has really increased my stamina...I find I'm not as tired as I was during my workouts.

Congratulations on your weight loss! That's so great!! It's so hard to do, I really commend you on your accomplishment!!

I unlocked the boxing but didn't try it yet because I didn't realize I had the required controller. It said to use the numchuck, which DH had stashed away before I even saw it. I'm going to try that tonight.

The trick with the weight loss will be keeping it off now! I'm hoping that when I reach my goal, continued exercise will keep me there (and continued resistance to bringing my favorite snacks into the house). I know my weak points (main one: ice cream) so that is forbidden to come through the door.

Aquagirl, I don't have a link. Any scale that measures your bodyfat has to run electricity through you. I have a Tanita scale and that does it too (if I put it on to measure bodyfat).

I am not saying it's bad for everyone, I was just going through something at the time and wanted to remove anything that might have contributed to it. I'm now back on the Wii fit.

There is lots of documention on "wii-itis" <sp>. I had it. It is the result of repetitive motion, using muscles that hadn't been used in a while. It would be the same as if you started playing tennis or baseball daily. My doctor said he'd seen a lot of it. Now I vary up the games.

Thanks for the link on the EA game!:yay:

I don't think the Wii scale uses the electricity. It seems to do a BMI calculation based on your weight and the other info. you entered (height, age, etc.). That means it's probably not the most accurate measure, but you also don't have to worry about electricity.

I am going to be in Chicago for the weekend, which means I will miss two days on it. I'm really going to miss my workouts (can't believe I'm saying that). I dread how it's probably going to yell at me too...when I gained a couple pounds in a day, it made me enter the reason. Oh well, accountability is good, even if it's just to a video game.

ETA: Here is how it calculates BMI. It's just through info., no electricity:

After reminding you to stand up straight, the game will ask if you're wearing any heavy clothing. Then it will determine where your weight is distributed. More than likely your beef won't be perfectly centered so you will be shown where your center of gravity is by a red dot on the onscreen balance board. You'll need to shift your weight so that the dot is placed right in the middle of the board. This will likely feel awkward, but you don't need to keep that stance for long. The game apparently just wants to demonstrate what terrible posture you have.

After this, Nintendo has enough information to calculate your BMI. We should note that Wii Fit does not determine your weight. It determines your body's bulk in relation to your height and lets you know if you've got too much mass going on. A vertical meter is separated into blue (under weight), yellow (just right), and red (over weight) segments, and an arrow will indicate where you fit in. Then, perhaps comically, the size of your Mii will be adjusted to match your BMI.

Yes, thank you inkkognito, and the other poster, it does appear the Wii does not use the BI (bioelectrical impedance) method to measure body fat, unlike when my Tanita scale measures BF. That's good to know.

However, the Wii fit does measure your weight. How else does it come up with your pounds weighed number? And also, what does it use to determine body bulk so it can figure out the relationship of that to your height?

BTW, I found an interesting case where a European girl (young) was upset because the machine called her overweight. Nintendo had to apologize.

Yep, I saw that when I was researching out it makes its calculations. Geez, if you get offended by a machine calling you "fat," you're sure gonna have some trouble when you grow up and get out in the real world! For me, I like the Wii's abusiveness (making me justify it when I gain etc.) 'cause it keeps me accountable.

Of course, since I'm in Chicago for the weekend, I indulged in two of my old hometown favorites today: authentic Mexican food and something I affectionately call "lard lobster" at a Japanese place. My Wii is gonna have some harsh words for me when I return home on Mon.

What an awesome gift! I use a skin on mine - you can find these online to see what they are. A kind of glove. But you don't have to wait for it, start now. Create your Wii character if you haven't already and start your chart. It will prompt you.

Have you had a Wii before? Not sure if you just got the fit portion or this is your first Wii. Take it easy with the sports. Many of us have gotten "wii-itis" and had to see the doc or chiro from too much tennis or bowling too fast. Warm up, stretch.

Have fun!

There are certain areas: Yoga, strength training, aerobics, and balance. I warm up with the balance games, then go to aerobics, then cool down with yoga. I haven't done anything with the strength training yet. The best sweat builders are the step aerobics and boxing. As you rack up time, you'll gain access to more games and activities. It's a great incentive!

RangerPooh

I start with some yoga stretches followed by strength training. Then I head to Aerobics (step, hula, some boxing, occassionally running, what ever my mood that day), followed by more strength training or balance, ending with yoga or the "candle" balance game ...one of the later ones that you will earn.

I too have a skin on mine but get frustrated with it at times during the step exercises as it doesn't always register my step. However it is a nice grip to have. Mine's green and my DD4 comments about wanting to play with my green exercise toy. I do not have a yoga mat but simply lie on the floor. As it is on our basement I lay on a rug. Not the comfiest thing but it does the job.

Thanks for the tips! I just finished, did it about 30 minutes. But I'm concerned it really was only about a 20 minute workout with all the stopping and starting.

And I never saw boxing? I guess the more I do it, the more games will open up?

Is there any way to get games going for longer periods of time. The jogging one really seemed to make me work, but it was short. Do I have to just keep restarting it?

I'm not good at picking my own workout. I need someone to say "ok, do this, then this, then this for 15 minutes, then this". :rolleyes1I guess there's nothing like that on Wii fit, is there? I'm just having trouble figuring out what I'm supposed to be doing to get results......

thanks again!

marshallandcartersmo - You can open up longer routes the more you play the game. When you see the screen for the foot race you will notice under it a little box that says something like "short" route. If you click right on the control pad (or maybe it is the + button) you can choose a longer route.

Also by doing your BMI and weight each day you can see a chart of how you are progressing. When you set it up the first time it gave you the option of setting a goal. As you work out each day, you can see how you are progressing on the chart. Play around with your options and you may be surprised with what you find.

I just got mine Sat nite. Really used it yesterday and today. My legs are KILLING me!!! I was wobbly last nite. I'm trying to get in shape for our upcoming trip and I need it BADLY! But I love this thing. I HATE excersing, but this seems like more fun. Anyone out there with My Fitness Coach? I know it doesn't use the board, but is it fun? Also wondering about EA's new fitness game coming out later this month, but I would really like something that has to do with the balance board as it tells me if I am doing something right or wrong.

I have My Fitness Coach and have read great things about it, but I've been so stuck on Wii Fit that I haven't tried it yet. I figure if I finally start losing interest, I can pull that out for something fresh.

I've unlocked a few of the longer sessions and they will really give you a good workout. If you do it consistently, you rack up enough time to start unlocking them pretty quickly.

From what I gather, Fitness Coach is not so much "fun" as it is like having a personal trainer in your home. A few years back, I did really well with the Firm DVDs, so I'm seeing this as a higher tech version of that. You can input the type of equipment you have, such as weights, a balance ball, and a stepper, and it will give youa routine based on that so you can incorporate them. I think it tracks your progress too, but it doesn't have games and is more "serious" than Wii Fit.

Another Wii Fit user here! We got ours last Christmas, and I used it a few weeks but now I'm really using it! Since about April 21...

I love the balance games, looks like I'm the only one who likes soccer! :confused3 I got a perfect score on the first level, not yet on the advanced!

Every morning I get up around 6 and do 30 minutes of the aerobic activity. I start with the easier hula hoop, then basic step (my warm up). Then I do the rythmic boxing for ten minutes, then a short run, then advance step. After that I have a few minutes needed to hit my 30 so I do whatever I want - hula hoop, more step, etc.

I also do the body test every day. I like to track my weight, even though some say you shouldn't weigh daily. It helps me to see where I messed up, when my body is messed up (i.e. bloated), etc. It's a really good motivator, for me!

Funny thing is wii calls me Obese, on that scale. I told DH my goal is to be Overweight! Ha ha! I think when it says "that's overweight" I'll be so happy I cry because I'm not Obese! :rotfl2:

Does anyone else have a problem with the steps not registered sometimes on both the basic and advanced step? It drives me CRAZY! It seems to happen most often with the sideways steps. I don't think the Wii scale uses the electricity. It seems to do a BMI calculation based on your weight and the other info. you entered (height, age, etc.). That means it's probably not the most accurate measure, but you also don't have to worry about electricity.

Thank you for confirming that, I thought that an equation was used to calculate BMI. Even if electricity was used, I didn't think that 4 AA batteries would provide that much :lmao:.

I have this problem and it annoys me sooooo much!!! I usually have the problem with the sideway step too.

I have been trying to do at least 30 minutes of cardio on the wii fit. My usual routine is advanced step (5 min), super hula hoop (6 min), expert boxing (10 min), 2x reg. hula hoop (70 sec. each), and advanced step (5 min). It adds up to 34 minutes. I love the hula hoop, but the 6 minutes is sometimes painful . After the cardio I can do the fun stuff like balance games and yoga.

inkkognito
05-12-2009, 10:53 PM
My routine is usually to start off with the advanced snow skiing for a few rounds, then do a couple of rounds of the balance game where you have to tip the balls into the holes. Then it's a few rounds of advanced step and boxing or jogging for cardio, followed by basic step to start my cool down. Then I end with a few yoga poses. I really need to do some of the strength training, but I've gotten myself in a comfortable rut.

That used to happen to me, but I think I've got the hang of it now. My biggest pet peeve, and it usually happens during boxing, is that the wii losses its connection with the balance board and I have to turn it off and on again. Then of course my boxing is all messed up! :headache:

Very cool site!

How long are y'all finding that your batteries last? I've noticed that the hand-held controllers are "missing" my movements sometimes, and I'm wondering if that means the batteries are getting low. The board seems less sensitive too, especially on the snow skiing. Will it give any onscreen battery warning, or do they just go out?

That used to happen to me, but I think I've got the hang of it now. My biggest pet peeve, and it usually happens during boxing, is that the wii losses its connection with the balance board and I have to turn it off and on again. Then of course my boxing is all messed up! :headache:

Has that happened to anyone else? I have never seen that.

Thanks for the website...I've got to get ds to get the Wii hooked back up. We took it to WDW for him and he hasn't gotten it set back up.

Hast that happened to anyone else? I have never seen that.

I haven't had mine lose the connection from the board. I also haven't had an issue with the batteries, ds usually keeps those changed.

The Sports Active Personal Trainer is out this Tuesday. It's 59.99. I see that both Toys R Us and Best Buy are giving away a $10 gift card with it. I suspect that's because Wii would not let anyone sell at a lower price.

It includes a leg strap and resistance band. The leg strap is pictured around one leg, velco'd, holding the end to what may be the numchuk.

Wonder if this will sell out or if I can wait to hear reviews?

I have been using the wii Active for 10 days now and I am just crazy about it. It is like having a personal trainer in your living room each time. I like the way if focuses on different areas and mixes up the activities. I am doing the 30 day challenge and really like that it gives you a rest day for every two of exercise. I like this better than wii fit because it moves quickly into different exercises. I also like it better than Jillian's workout because it seems more personal to me.

Hi everyone! I just found you all and I'm a bit late to the party, but I just wanted to add my experiences to the mix too. I LOVE the wii fit, have had it now since July 3 and with that plus the alli program, I've lost 14 pounds! I bought the wii sports active yesterday and DD tried it out last night. She's super athletic works out constantly and she loved it. It gave her a great workout. I tried it this morning after my wii fit session and I love it too! I adore the dancing and sports (not doing the 30 day challenge yet as I have to go out of town in a week to a conference). My husband thinks I'm foolish for loving a "video game" and he's very skeptical. Oh well, who cares! I also heard they're coming out with wii fit plus that will have more games and will take your info over from the original wii fit. Can't wait! Hope everyone is still having fun wii-ing and getting in shape!

Hi. I got the Wii and Wii Fit for DW last week and we are both having some fun albeit with soreness. :)

We mainly got the Wii for Wii Fit so not into any games right now with the exception of Wii Sports that came with it and Wii Play for a 2nd wiimote.

DW loves it and it is plenty right now for both of us. Hopefully we get a few months out of it before it bores us. We will definately upgrade to the Fit Plus when it comes out. The Wii Active will be something for later if we can maintain a workout routine and get in a bit better shape. Right now it wouldn't be worth it.

Definately having fun with this! :thumbsup2

I love my Wii Fit! It's great on those nights you are caught between being a couch potato and going to the gym. There are some nights I feel like being active, but don't want to go out of the house. The Wii Fit is perfect for those nights. It is a good workout and fun too! I love the rhythm boxing.:cool1:

I have Wii sports and other types of games and am thinking about buying Wii fit. Probably next week or so. I was one of those questioning whether it really works or not because I've seen lots of mixed reviews.

It's like anything else, it works if you use it. I've lost 18 pounds using it and watching my fat intake. I've backed off of it because I'm back teaching and haven't had the time I did when I first got it, but I definately think it was worth it!

Hey guys! Update with Wii fit - I just bought the Wii fit plus and I love it! It's got some really fun new games and I think the price $19.95 at WalMart is pretty good for some cool new features. The Kung Fu is a riot! I've lost 21 pounds now although I'm not doing it as much as I was in the summer - teaching all day and directing at night is really cutting into my Wii fit time!!! :lmao:

I have a WII Fit as well and love it. I have been banned for several months, but am hoping to be released this week to resume it. I just heard about the upgrade for the Fit and had no idea it was out. I will be off to Walmart tomorrow to check it out. My Dsis has been using a program that features Jillian from biggest loser (I can not remember the name of the game) She says it is intense! I am ccertain I will not be ready for that right off the back, but I am looking forward to the lazy river or whatever it is called. It is the one where you are in a bubble and you have to use your core to move up the river to the rainbow. Now there is a work out. It sure helped my balance and core strength.:thumbsup2

I love WII fit and so does my DD6:yay: my fav is the aerobics and funny enough her's is the yoga. Went to Dr. last week and was told I had bad balance for my age (40's) told him already knew this because my WII fit told me  so guess I better be doing more of the balance part now.

We have had our Wii and Wii Fit Plus for almost 2 weeks. I have been doing an hour everyday and lost 4 lbs the first week. I will check again on Saturday. Hopefully I lost more.

I have never liked exercising, but this is great. Most of the time the hour just flies by!

I found this online, looks helpful! http://www.wiifitroutine.com/

From the link, a shaded gray box will appear in the middle with different scrolling information. When it scrolls "routine generator", a green box will appear. Click on it. On the right side are boxes for you to pick different types of workout you'd like.....and it'll spit out a routine for you. I'll try mine tomorrow! Hoping all the ones that it picks for me are unlocked......

Thanks for this link - what a neat site! I registered and am going to generate a routine and do it tomorrow.:thumbsup2

I just got Wii Fit Plus today. :) I can't wait to try it out! We have the original Wii Fit but some of the features were so annoying (having to go back for every yoga pose, for example). I have heard great things about the Plus version. The Workout Generator website looks useful - thanks!

Just checking in...it's been a while and I recently switched to EA Sports Active, but I am planning to get the $20 Wii Fit Plus add-on. The reviews for it are really good, especially the "flying chicken" game. People seem to love that one! No added step, which I was hoping for, but apparently there is a cool cycling game too. I plan to incorporate it into my "off days" from the EA Sports Active 30-day challenge.

The plus is pretty cool - I was hoping for more step too, but the judo one is okay. I LOVE the cycling and the running. I have one of my cats registered on there and she runs with me - too cute! Hard with all of the Christmas treats around, I'm scared to do the body test lately because of all the goodies I've been devouring! :scared1: I do like the active too, I think it's a much better workout!

thank you so much for posting this! i've been weary of purchasing the new wii fit plus because i was so anxious for wii fit when it first came out, but to be honest, it really just ends up sitting on my shelf because i still prefer the traditional gym workout. however, i'm very terrible about stretching, so i think i'll pick up the new wii fit plus and use this to generate a yoga routine to do a few minutes in the morning.
