I just hit hubby up last night to try to get hime to agree to go. We would be there from Jan 4-9. I always get my way when it comes to Disney. We were just there Dec 08 but had to cut it short due to a death in the family. My kids will be almost 5 and 9. They have been three times but we aret rying to fit in a lot while they are little.

We live in south Louisiana so aren't worried baout the weather. We know we can manage. We would drive and bring layers. We have heard cold and nice so you never know. I guess we are still talking about it but I have started planning!!!:rotfl:

I didn't see another January 2010 post....this is the winner!

We were last at WDW in November 2008. This trip is January 30-February 6. We can't wait!

We have gone to WDW in Jan the past two years now...hopefully 2010 will be no exception! We go MLK week.

The weather is all over the place. You'll swim one day, freeze your butt off the next. At least that's been the case these past two January's. The crowds are low(ish). The tour groups are the only thing that annoy me, but they aren't too bad!

We will also be headed back in January 2010 to celebrate my daughter's 4th birthday. We've gone in February before, but never January. We will likely go down the weekend after MLK day, hoping to avoid any crowds with the holiday or the marathon. We'll stay at the AKL, since I've always wanted to do that. I wish Disney would release the rates earlier! I'm an advance planner and hate having to wait, lol.

You will love AKL! We stayed there on our last trip and it was awesome!

I'm an advance planner too (already picked our restaurants!) but the new rates will be here before we know it. Not that I want to wish my summer away but I'm so ready for WDW!

I am just starting to work on DH but it won't take much. I ama planner too and it will kill me to have to wait ut we wil hve to wait to make sure DH gets the vacation anyway.

We will drive this time and it will greatly help with being able to prepare for the weather changes. i think this trip we will skip the dining plan. We have done it twice befoe but my kids are at the age where they didn't want to sit for that long. We will do a few sit down meals and one character meal. That will be about it. I don't want to have to fight to get them to sit still when they just want to ride rides. We are pulling myoldest out of school the week everyone else goes back after Christmas Jan 4-Jan 9 is when we will be there.

We are opting out of the dining plan this time too. It's just DH & I and I did price it out both ways. We'll come out ahead not having the plan. We normally just do a piece of fruit for breakfast and don't do big lunches either. We do love our sit-down dinners though :cutie:

I'm anxious to find out more about January weather!

I'm going Jan 17-22

First January trip
First DVC renting trip
First solo trip

:scared1:

I am not worried about the weather in Florida... I am worried about the weather here. Normally it's just cold and rainy but the last year winter 08/09 we were killed with snow. Hopefully it's hold true that crazy snow only happens about once every 20 or so years.

Where are you staying with your DVC rental? We stayed at AKV last year and it was awesome!

You can ask Mr. Snowman to come toward the northeast. I'd be so thankful to see snow after the last few years of ice!

That's where I am staying, AKV! I will definitely ask him to visit you instead, it hardly really snows here so we're not used to it and neither is DOT so the city is in shut down if it's more then 4-5 inches :headache:

It was fun when I was a kid, now I just dislike it.

We are looking at going to Disney in Jan 2010. We will be taking our son who will be in third grade out for a week. We have two choices. The week of Jan 4-9 and him missing the first week after Christmas break but it is the week of the marathon. We can also go the week of MLK and he would miss 4 days instead of 5. This maybe much better for DH's vacation.

Just wandering what would be easier

alecam
05-05-2009, 03:59 PM
From what I understand, the week of the marathon has a bit less of an effect than MLK weekend. I have changed my week three times due to all of these choices. After checking all other threads, I decided to go with 9-16 and take my chances with the marathon.

We cannot decide when we are going. It looks like the week of Jan 4th may be out of the question but not sure yet. We may have to suck it up and go MLK because thaty would give us two more days!

If we decide on that we would arrive Jan 17 and start int he parks 1/18 and then leave on 1/23 in the evening.

We are hoping to go around Jan 23-30th. It will be my parents first trip in 22 years so we are excited. Still trying to figure out where to stay, though. And yes, I am also a planner and can't wait for August when the 2010 package rates come out. Here's hoping for some good deals!:thumbsup2

When is the marathon in 2010? I just booked our January resort this morning for the 23rd-30th at Wilderness Lodge. Please tell me the marathon isn't then.

I'm really excited for our trip though! We've been quite a few times as AP holders, but I've never even seen the wilderness lodge and while we're usually frugal, we're going all out for the kids on this trip with BBB, Castle dinner, meal plan with 7 character meals, etc. I'm just really really hoping that the crowds are low.

If things go well, I plan on going to every park in one day on my first day. But we'll see.

No, it's much earlier in the month, 7-10 I believe.

Ok, good! I'm really looking forward to low crowds and a pleasant trip in January!
We're going this summer too, but fully expecting crowds, heat and rain, so we'll just plan on spending a lot of time at the pool. :cool2:

The Pirates League - a new Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique- type experience to open at Pirates of the Caribbean
Apr 21, 2009

A new "Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique" type experience is headed to the Pirates of the Caribbean gift shop area aimed at providing boys with an alternative to the mainly girl-orientated Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. The new "Pirates League" will be built in the section of the Pirates of the Caribbean gift shop that closed some years ago. The experience is less hair and makeup, and more about costume and accessories, including some pirate and swordsmanship training. The experience is set to open around June/July 2009. More details should surface in the next few weeks including costs and a more precise opening date.

I found this on ********************

Calling all scoundrels, rogues and ne’er-do-wells – Captain Jack and the crew of the Black Pearl want you.

Each guest checking in at the plunder-filled pirate’s lair gets an official pirate name. Then it’s off to Muster Station for applications of beards and eye patches, scarves and scars, earrings and gold teeth – all done with the savvy skill of a veteran pirate who shares his own tales of sea-sailing adventures.

After the new buccaneers recite a sacred pirate oath, they are officially part of Captain Jack’s motley crew, leaving their old identities behind. Past a hidden portal and into the treasure room, the shipmates have their “pirate portrait” taken before being turned loose on an unsuspecting Adventureland – and no doubt feeling right at home at the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction.

Guests can choose from three daily pirate packages:

First Mate Package: Includes bandana; choice of facial effects; scars; tattoos; fake teeth; earring and eye patch; sword and sheath; pirate coin necklace;
one 5x7-inch photo; and personalized pirate oath -- $49.95 plus tax.
Empress Package: Includes bandana; shimmering makeup; face gem; tattoos; nail polish; earring and eye patch; sword and sheath; pirate coin necklace;
one 5x7-inch photo; and personalized pirate oath -- $49.95 plus tax.
Captains Package: Includes choice of costume/outfit from selection; choice of facial effects; scars; tattoos; fake teeth; earring and eye patch; sword and sheath; pirate coin necklace; three 5x7-inch photos; and personalized pirate oath -- $124.95 plus tax.
Newly donned swashbucklers can test their pirate prowess on the streets of Adventureland where they search for clues and discover treasures. And for mateys who need a little more training, learn the secrets for survival by the captain himself during “Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Tutorial.”

I think it sounds great :woohoo:

My DS's are 7 and 9.
As far as our accomodations, I know we will be offsite because that is what we prefer. Having done both, we feel that our money is better spent on a condo or townhouse. Right now I have four or five "possibilities". Most of them 3 bedroom townhouses or condos for around $450-$500 for the week. I am waiting to book my airfare first before I book our condo. With SW not offering our dates until the end of June, I think it will be at least until then before I book "shelter".

This past January was my first time staying at WDW for a week and we stayed on property at the ASMU. I think that when my boys get older staying off property will be something we look into but for now we like staying on property. It just seems as if it is easier with the boys being young. No loading up the car to go the park and if one gets cranky or needs to go back to the room, the other one can stay at the park with a parent.

I definitely agree!! As you can see by my trip list below, onsite was awesome when they were younger. I took my oldest when he was 8-months old and would have been horrified if we were not onsite. Now that they are older, though, they can hang for the whole day, and I need them to have their own rooms at night or else :faint: !!

Hello everyone!

This will be my dd8's first trip to Disney World. My dh, ds and I went went ds was 3. He is now 13. We will be going the week of January 23 - 30, 2010.

I know nothing about booking rooms or anything. I want the trip to memorable but not expensive.

My ds and dd aren't into too much Disney. My dd likes Hannah Montana and HSM, but is not obessed like some little girls. ;) Ds likes Spiderman but isn't as crazy about him as he was when he was younger. He is more about the Playstation 3.

Any advice you guys have I would greatly appreciate it.

Welcome!!

Are you looking for onsite or off. Now that my kids are older, offsite is the way to go for us, because it is much cheaper and my boys are old enough where we no longer need "rests" like they needed when younger. There are a ton of offsite communities that are relatively inexpensive, but you would need a car to get to and from WDW. However, onsite is so much more convenient as far as location, transportation, etc. I have a DS9 who is very into our X-Box and hates to be outside, and a DS7 who enjoys outdoors/sports and hates to be inside. They are very different as I'm sure yours are. I will be more than happy to help you with your plans, reservations if you wish.

The value resorts are great. I think the best one is Pop Century. It is newer than the others and it has a nice theme to it. Really all of them do. If you wanted to stay in a moderate resort Port Orleans French Quarter is really nice. They have a great pool for the kids.

Hi everyone!

I'm joining in! We are going in January for the second year in a row!

This time a few things will be different!

First, it's a suprise for our kids! We're either goingto tell them on christmas or right before we leave!

Second, we are taking my sister, her DH and their 3 kids with us!! We tried to take them this past January but due to some problems on their end they had to cancel!

Third, it will be our very first trip as DVC owners!! DH and I took the DVC plunge after we toured during the trip we took in March for our 10th anniversary! It was a very nice anniversary present!!

We are super excited and I really hope we can keep it a secret! DD is normally my right hand man when it comes to planning so it's hard not to say things!! Not to mention I'm affraid my sisters kids will spill the beans! They've never been and are VERY excited, especially after having to cancel last year!! Also, my 13 year old niece will be spending the majority of her summer here with us so I have to make sure she doesn't slip!!

I can't wait to make reservation!!! I can do it on 6/9 I believe. We won't be staying at our home resort, AKV, because we need a Grand Villa and the Grand Villas at AKV are way too many points! I'm praying to be able to get a grand villa at OKW!

Right now I'm hoping for January 9th - 16th but am trying to be flexible in case we can't get a GV reservation at OKW for that week!

Anyway, thanks so much! Can't wait to get to know you all!

We stayed in the Family Suites last January and loved them. It was perfect for the group we had. Great to have two bathrooms and a kitchen area without the big price tag! :thumbsup2

This time we are going to try the CBR. Originally we were going to take the motorhome and stay at Fort Wilderness but once I saw pictures of the pirate rooms I changed our reservations. It will be a surprise for the boys (if I can keep the secret)!

My DD will be four on Christmas eve, so our January trip is kind of to celebrate that and then also our 15th wedding anniversery this august. Our trip doesn't really coincide with the things we are celebrating but Jan sounded like a much better time to go...lower crowds, cooler weather, we do construction in WI so work is slower.

Anyhoo, our girls will both be 4 :cheer2: princess: princess: Two princesses!

How exciting for you guys!! I would plan to be there for atleast 4-5 days if was you. Also make sure you have atleast an idea of what you want to do and in what order. Buy a planning book....my fave right now is The Complete Walt Disney World 2009. It will give you a lot of inside info, as will these boards. If the kids aren't super Disnified yet, get them watching some of the movies. DS13 will probably get into the prirate movies, HSM, and maybe even Nemo or Lion King, depending on his personality. DD8 is still young enough to enjoy just about anything. I particularly enjoy the princess stuff with my DD4. Let them in on the planning as it will help get them excited! Try to get in a few dining experiences...maybe they would prefer the Spirit of Aloha as opposed to the Chef Mickey's?

Oh, I hope you have a wonderful time!

Pencil us in for the week of 9-16th!!! My dear in-laws are treating us to a vacation for our 15th wedding anniversery! How cool are they?!?!?

Cast will be Me (32) DH (33) DD (4) for the whole week and
MIL and FIL for 3-4 days of the trip!

We have yet to determine where to stay and what all to do. I am the only disney nut and only one that's ever been to WDW, so I am the official planner for this vacation.

So far, all I have done is determine dates and make a vacation planning questionnaire for everyone going. Once I figure out everyone's interests I can figure the rest out.

I'm thinking that the 2010 edition will come out at the end of this year but maybe I should get the 2009 one too! I find it's informative, easy to read, and has such beautiful pictures. My kids love looking at the pictures.

I just bought The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2009 and I really don't like it. It's hard to read and does not seem organized.

MLK Day is the 18th so maybe the 19th and 20th will be a little heavier with people making a long weekend out of it but in general as long as you go before Presidents Day in February, you should be good.

Maybe someone else that has been for MLK Day can offer some input.

Hey guys
We're trying to plan a trip sometime in January, but both me and my boyfriend go back to college on the 17th.
So we are really available from the 2nd until the 16th.
Should we do the 3rd to the 10th or the 9th to the 16th? Or some combination in mid-week?
I know the marathon is the 7-10th but I've heard that the crowds are not too bad. And crowd levels are supposed to be low after the 2nd.

What to do... what to do...
Any advice on the matter?

I think you will be okay with either of these weeks. On the third/fourth there may be some people looking to extend their holiday week by a few days, but that should be about it. Other than that, you should be fine.

It's hard to predict the weather in January and February. I was there for almost two weeks this year. Jan 31st to February 12th. The first week we froze, the second week we were in shorts. :lmao: Either way it's still fun!! I would suggest packing a jacket or hoodie in case it's cold and shorts in case it's hot. Most of the time it's nice weather in the 60's or 70's.

Hey we're going at the same time! DH & I will be there from January 29 - February 6. We've never been during this time of year either, we usually go in the fall. With the economy, we needed a little more time to save money so we pushed it back. Where are you staying?

I did a couple searches on weather for January and February weather in Florida and it looks like it can be anything. We plan to pack a little of each type of clothing and if need be, do :laundy: once while we're there.

Weather at WDW in the winter months can be a bit fickle! It maybe 75-80 one day and 45-50 the next. Even if it's 80 during the day it gets chilly at night and early morning. Being able to dress in layers in very important!

We were in WDW Jan 3rd - 11th of this year and for the most part the weather was great! 70's and sunny with a bit of breeze. One day a storm blew in and it POURED for about an hour and got windy. It was absolutely freezing!! We had to leave Epcot and go back to the room and change into the warmest clothing we had to make it to through until the evenings dinner and Illuminations!

But, it's like that even the beginning of March! We were in WDW the beginning of March 08 and the first few days it was freezing cold!! It was 42 degrees at one point!! It was warmer back in NY!!

No matter what you'll have a great time!! Happy planning!

Right now we are booked at BWV - Preferred View, with a wait list for BWV - Standard view. I don't want to use that many DVC points! :giggle

I think we will do the Dining plan, but not sure yet.

This will be our 3rd trip during that time of year. We have both a birthday and an anniversary to celebrate that month, so we love to get down there for them! The weather is amazing in January...but very hard to pack for!

We are booked at the Treetop Villas as of right now, however i'm about 98% sure that will change as i'm not happy with the idea of having to walk so far to use the resort amenities. I'm trying to reserve at the AKV but none are available yet, worst case scenario (which suits me fine to) will be two rooms at AKL again. :woohoo:

Last Jan. we would have loved to stay in the pirate room....But with 5 of us it was a no go. We are pretty much stuck with Port Orleans/since there is no way we can flip a bill for anything over mod. Anyone hear anything??

We will either be there Dec 12 - 19 or Jan 2 - 9. We are waiting to find out if my husband will be able to do a special project in place of exams. If he can do a special project we will stick with December. If not, we will have to move our trip to January. I wonder how the crowds will be that week in January and what the average wait times are.

Oooo we had one of those on our last trip and it was sooooo nice :lovestruc Our room was over the Sunset Savannah directly above the check in counter. We would open our door and that cool wooden bridge was right there :thumbsup2 Wonderful location. I will hope that you get it. We had animals all the time except one afternoon in our 8 day stay. My DH surprised me with a "post-cruise" quick WDW trip. We were just there this past January and he said, "Not for FIVE more years!" - but he's proven how much he loves me :lovestruc.

We will be at WDW 1/10-1/13 - haven't made resort ressies yet...leaning toward WL or the Poly. It will be me, DH, DS (9), and DD (6).

OMFG!!! Last time I was in WDW I was 8 years old, which was 20 years ago. My longtime girlfriend and her 7y/o daughter have never been.
We are headed to Orlando for Jan 7th(from over 5000km away) for 2 weeks most of the trip we are just off site at the Radisson Buena Vista, but for the last 2 days we are splurging and getting a room at the Yacht Club!! I can't believe I am spending $1k on 2 nights hotel.
Being from the far north in Canada we aren't too worried about the weather, more so about park hours, closed attractions.

I am so excited! I just booked 7 nights at the Poly Concierge for the end of January!!! My husband agreed we could go if the 4/3 deal came out so I've been hoping and praying. We are going from Jan 25th to Feb 1st. Ahhhhh!!! I didn't think we would get to go to Disney this year as my husband is a med student and never gets time off. But he gets a week in January.

I called dining though, and the first day we can make dining reservations is Oct 27th! This is the day that it opens up to 180 days. If we were going down one day earlier we'd be able to get our reservations before everyone is calling all at once. I'm nervous.

Yay on your first Marathon! I just did my first Half Marathon last month and it was awesome (Virginia Beach Rock and Roll Half). From all the stalking I have done here, it seems that crowds are a bit higher than average January crowds during that weekend but not bad at all since January crowds are pretty low to begin with.

Last WDW trip we did was last April, right at the beginning of Spring Break season, so it was crowded but not as bad as it can be and not as low as it could be, so we are looking forward to this LONG trip and smaller crowds :) (oh, and the fact that it will be the first tiime my DS5 and I have seen my husband since Easter since he's been in Iraq since then!)

Thanks! No we won't fly anymore (DH got panic attack last year and has dug his heels in). We're fortunate enough to have a family home in Marion Co., Fla. We take the auto train on Jan. 1st then we just drive to our house. That way we were able to avoid some of the busy weekends. We usually bring our kids, grandkids, parents, etc... But this year our daughter is having a baby in Feb. so they couldn't come. We had already paid off their part of the trip, so we got selfish and transfered it to ourselves!!!:rotfl2: I am SO EXCITED!!!!

Hi January people! Anybody find a good deal on a car rental for their January trip? Prices are still looking high.

I got a great deal last year. Mini van for $199 a week. The lady at the Thrifty counter couldn't believe it when we showed up to pick up the car. From emails, it looks like I booked it on 1-4, so I guess I'll start checking the first of the year. If I find something good, I'll post it here.

I guess I'll just have to be patient and wait for January car deals. It's a little unnerving how how the prices are right now, though.

I already posted but wanted to make a change. We are now staying AKV 1/10-1/14 and then CSR 1/14-1/17 instead of Pop for second part of our trip. Got the 40% off for Disney Visa and only have to pay $20 more to stay at Moderate rather than value.:cool1:

Hi January people! Anybody find a good deal on a car rental for their January trip? Prices are still looking high.

I went with Hotwire today. For my 1 week rental, I got a midsize from Alamo for $179 total. I can live with that. My previous best was a compact for $235.

We just booked our trip two weeks ago and I'm still on cloud 9!

We are going from Jan 16 - Jan 23rd. We just moved to SC from PA, so this will be our first time driving instead of flying. I love not having to worry about packing stuff in suitcases following all the airline restrictions. ;)

We are staying at the WL. It will be our 3rd time at The Lodge.

ADRs are...
Sunday 1/17 - LTT dinner (hooray for the characters!)
Monday 1/18 - Sci Fi for a late lunch
Tuesday 1/19 - Ohana Character Breakfast (our fave) & WCC for dinner
Wednesday 1/20 - Garden Grill for dinner
Thursday 1/21 - LeCellier (only for myself & DH!)
Saturday 1/23 - Cape May Breakfast

I purchased airfare from Detroit to Orlando about a month or so ago. Including taxes and fees we paid $150 per person round trip. Got a great price! We are flying Airtran leaving around 2pm on Saturday, Jan. 9 and return flight leaving around 3pm on Sunday, Jan. 17. Hello Snowbirds! May we join in?
I, my DS13, and DD11 will be at CBR January 15 - 22, booked on the 3/4 promotion.
I got $52 Southwest Getaway fares from DC back in October, woo-hoo!
I haven't been to WDW in January for about 20 years. We'll be there on MLK Birthday, but we plan to spend a couple of days enjoying the resort(s)/pool(?)/DTD, so if that weekend is very busy, we'll bail from the parks. I hope crowds aren't too bad - now that kids are in middle school, I won't take them out of school for more than a day or two, and MLK week is the only week they have 3 days off already. I won't go over Christmas, Easter, or summer. So it looks like MLK week for us from now on!

I've stayed at CSR, but this will be the kids' first time on-site. We've always had a timeshare before.

I'm not doing the basic dining plan, but am considering the QSDP. I know the kids would get a kick out of being able to order their own snacks when hungry and paying with their cards. I've made reservations at Kouzzina (breakfast), LTT (breakfast), Tusker House (breakfast), Le Cellier (dinner), and Les Chefs (mid-afternoon dessert to see Remy). If we go with QSDP, I will cancel Le Cellier, and at least one of the breakfasts.

We don't actually fly home until the 23rd, so I'm trying to decide if I want to add a day at CBR or at a Deluxe for one night (if I get a PIN or a good discount). If we do QSDP, I'll definitely make a separate reservation, because I don't want the DP for that last day. I know we will be ready to stop eating by then!

So many decisions!! In the meantime, I'd better get to packing, because we are going to spend Thanksgiving at Williamsburg.
Happy planning all!

For those of you out of NJ: I don't know if you'd be willing to drive but I got a flight on Continental to go from ABE to MCO in Feb for $140 RT, and Delta is about the same out of this airport which is about 1 hour north of Philly on the Turnpike and 15 minutes east right off route 22 in the Allentown, Bethlehem area. For Continental they call it a flight but it is really just a van ride over to Newark, and Delta connects in Atlanta. I think the long term parking here is pretty reasonable. We also have Allegiant air which is a discount carrier.

Well, I wasn't sure if this trip was going to happen or not - I've hardly thought about it, because of other things going on around here. But my payment was due this week, and I paid it. So trip is paid for, plane tickets bought, ADRs made, I guess that means we are going! Also, they finally released a discount for January, so I reserved our last night at Wilderness Lodge, just to get a taste. All that's left to do is break it to DH that we are going. He was supposed to be at sea in January, now not leaving until late January.

We gave the kids their Christmas surprise this morning, letting them know that we're going to WDW on January 6th. We'll be staying at AKL 1/6 - 1/10, then doing a 4nt cruise 1/10-1/14 (that part's still a surprise for the kids), and spending 1/14 at DTD for my son's birthday before flying home that night.

It'll be me, DH, DS (5 turning 6) and DD 3. It'll be our first family trip to WDW, and our 4th Disney cruise, though the 1st one on the Wonder.

We are arriving at the Beach Club late January 16th - early morning January 24th!!!!!!!!

DH, myself and our 3 kids (16, 14, 11). I am trying to decide what parks what day. Tempted to use Tourguide Mike, which we never do. I think we are going to pay oop for meals - there are alot of places near the Beach Club that are not on the meal plans and we don't like to schedule around sit-down meals.

Have fun everyone!!!!!

We gave the kids their surprise Xmas day- they wanted to pack immediately. We will be staying at the POP 1-17 thru 1-23. We will be celebrating my DD 6th birthday while there, I don't think she has made that connection yet.
I still need to decide if I want to add the DP, and send my room requests. Any suggestions?
