Scabiosa-Also called Pincushion Flower. Once very popular that are making a huge comeback. These are delicate little flowers on long stems. They come in many shades of violet, from a light pink to a deep purple plus a white.

Pincushion Flowers are loved by Bee's and Butterflies. They grow about 24-36 inches tall and will flower the whole season. They like ordinary , well drained soil, a little on the chalky side.

These are such jaunty little additions to the garden! I have many of them mixed into beds. I have kept my eye out for other varieties of pincushion plants - but always just run across the two that I have. I hope their popularity does increase - and more varieties become commonly available as a result.

I adore these fun flowers. Thank heavens they have a nice common name. Scabiosa sounds like some horrid skin disease :)

I buy them, I kill them. I buy them, I kill them.

I love them. Keep trying. I love them. Keep trying.

Gina my guess why they keep dieing has something to do with the soil.

Plant reference says: well drained soil. Maybe the soil is heavy. Add a little sand so it drains and mulch the plant with grass clippings in the summer I think it likes cool feet.

I think you're right about the cool feet, Mamu. I keep planting it in full sun (that's what the little tag thingy says) but it scorches. I've recently moved some perennials to a part shade, part sun setting to see if they perform better than they had in full sun. So far the results are good. This may also be one that needs a little tenderness.
